In town on business from Texas and being a true southerner we look for bbq. City Bbq was the closest to my meeting location in Cary so I decided to try it out. Being from Texas we are true connoisseurs of bbq so I'll say I didn't go in with high expectation. To my surprise the brisket was moist and the texture and pull was just right, it was just lacking that good bark and fell short in the smokiness dept. There were lots of choices for sauces but I had to try the brush fire sauce that paid homage to Texas bbq, it had good flavor, almost enough heat, but was a tad too sweet for me. The atmosphere and service were great, so overall I would say this chain restaurant was good and hit the spot. read more

I had high hopes for City BBQ. As per past reviews-I am a traveling entertainer and get to see a fair amount of the country. I also search out good barbecue as a rule. This joint was recommended to me by one of my local crew, but I also checked out other reviews because there are so many barbecue places in the area, I didn't want to miss out on anything special. Now I'm sorry for my choice (No disrespect to the crew member!) So the place was quite busy and that was cool and to be expected-- but the merging of the dine-in and pick up lines created some tension and confusion among some folks, but I was really looking forward to the meat! They don't offer a three meat combo, only a two or a four or five meat combo so I had to cobble together the dish that suits me best. The teenager behind the register didn't seem to know what to do with me and his inability to answer some questions about adding sides left me bemused. To the fare: take a look at the picture. It looks AWESOME but looks can be deceiving. Fries: flavorful but greasy and limp. Cornbread: no flavor and more like sponge cake. Where were the crusty edges? The cornmeal texture? The Vinegar Slaw: slimy and watery. The MEAT! The pulled pork: First big disappointment- it is so pulled it's almost granular in texture. Thus making it dry and unpleasant to eat. The Brisket: second disappointing moment- it was so overdone it was spongy, so beyond tender it was like eating foam, with fat. The Ribs: Three for three, the taste was good but there was no rub to speak of. Also, what made the rib pick less than ideal was the fact that I got this as an extra at $2.25 a bone. They gave me an end piece so it was a full bone and the pointy baby-sized floating rib at the end. So I felt a bit cheated of a full rib (silly First World problem, I know!). The sauce station was at the end of a line, the soda dispenser and cutlery and EVERYTHING was at the end of a line-- hell, the garbage cans where you tossed your trash and separated the plates, the silverware, the trays-- were at the end of a line-- and soon the restaurant layout started to become oppressive. I felt like I was an employee working for City BBQ as well as trying to dine. Anyone feel me here? The ice dispenser was out of ice so I called out "86 ICE!!" to the line cooks, just like in my old waiter days!! Finally the SAUCES! I love multiple sauce options and City BBQ has a station with like 7 different sauces- I should mention all the sauce bottles were sticky and grimy( and I was not about to do side work and clean them all ). It seemed like way too many people pass thru this place to have such a small sauce station like this- again it seemed like someone thought this would cause less work for employees and streamline the experience but it only turned me off. Because we all know it's about the sauces. This Yankee is a big fan of the Carolina vinegar and mustard based sauces. Well they were all uniformly good however the molasses based sauce seemed like it had gone bad and was off. Fizzy to my taste. Soooooo. Swing and a miss, City BBQ! And since there are oh so many other options, I'll be looking forward to being a patron elsewhere, and hopefully not feeling like an employee there too. read more

We were visiting family in Cary and asked what local food we should have before we returned home, and City Barbeque was the general consensus, and we can see why after eating here! Friendly staff, great bbq, reasonable prices! We got one of the platters that included brisket, pulled pork, turkey, and sausage. It was Rib Tuesday ($1 for 1 rib), so we got a couple of ribs as well. If we lived down here, we would be here every Tuesday!! The ribs were amazing!! Melt in your mouth, great smoke! The brisket and pulled pork were also great! The rest of the meats were good, but not great. The turkey was a little dry, but had decent smoky flavor. All the meats stand well on their own, but when combined with the many sauces City Barbeque offered, they really did shine. I prefer the vinegary sauces, and they did not disappoint! As for sides, the beans are some the best I tasted!! Great combination of sweet and savory! The fries are pretty good too, good seasoning on them. My wife was a big fan of the hush puppies. The mac n cheese, cole slaw, and corn casserole dish were good, but not exceptional like the beans. Next time we are back down here, we will definitely visit City Barbeque again! read more

The smoke chicken leg and thigh is what I usually order. It's better if you get 2 sides for the special price. Their smoke chicken is smoked to perfection because it is not dry like other places. The chicken meat falls off the bone. The green beans cooked with bacon is the side item you should try. The corn pudding is the best here and I have never tasted anything like it before. I can never finish my food and there are boxes for you to take food home. The staff and manager is very nice and friendly. The manager checked up on us and asked if we need anything to please don't hesitate to ask. That is very great customer service. Average, not NC BBQ! A friend brought us here while visiting after hearing good reviews about it. It had a good atmosphere and was pretty busy for a weekday lunch time. After speaking to the cashier though, I learned they're not really North Carolina barbecue, but more of regional one from Texas, etc. They gave us samples of the brisket which was pretty juicy but not super flavorful. It's the type you had to add a lot of sauce to for more flavor. I ordered the combo plate with brisket and ribs and they were actually a lot drier than the sample. The ribs were also dry and not very flavorful. The sides were Collard greens, corn pudding and mac & cheese. All were just meh. I'm also more of a sweet sauce fan so didn't like many of them except for the apple one. Besides the service and the Texas toast that were good, everything else was just ok. Not impressed. read more

While visiting Wendell NC, we tried City Barbecue for takeout. This was the first time trying this chain and I have to say, it was really good and the staff was such a pleasure! Highly recommend the brisket sandwich and Mac & Cheese side ... both were simply outstanding! I don't know if I will be back to Wendell anytime soon, but if I were local ... This was not first choice for my first and only (since I was passing through) taste of BBQ in Raleigh, but a sorry experience at a local car dealership kept me too long to make it to any of my top BBQ choices, and this was on the way south, where I was headed. So expectations weren't high, and I was pleased with the food based on that. City BBQ's food was comparable to what I have at home at a local BBQ chain in the Philly area. Food was made with care, and more care than many places I encountered in GA for 4 weeks. The fries were pretty greasy, though, and the brisket was just okay. The mac-n-cheese was above average, and my son was happy with his sampling of everything. All in all a good place to help me refuel, and drive on late into the night, to my destination in southern GA. read more

City BBQ has the best brisket, hands down. I will not accept any rebuttals to this statement! My go-to choice is the brisket sandwich with one or two sides, and I make sure to experiment with the variety of BBQ sauce options! I like mixing two different sauces together and slathering it all over the brisket before consumption. Trust me, it's very filling and so so delicious. I've also tried the ribs and they were amazing, as well. I really like all the different sauces they have and the friendliness of the staff! This was my first time at City BBQ. I downloaded the app and was able to show them the code to use the $5 off for downloading it. However, I was unable to place the order through the app. I ordered a half rack of ribs and the baked beans. I was anticipating a great experience but my ribs were VERY dry. So I have been eating here since they opened. For a long time it has been great. But the last several times their chicken and brisket has been dry and over cooked. Tonight it was all of that and cold. Recognizing the whole COVID fiasco.. it's not an excuse for cold and over cooked food. Terrible would be a compliment. It's a shame that it has gone downhill so bad. Management should eat the food in the evening and taste what they are selling. If your brisket and chicken have been sitting around under the heat lamp and sitting in the warmer.. maybe you should toss it and serve some respectable food that we spend our money on. The newest barbeque contender in the Triangle, look out Backyard BBQ and the Pit! This NC location of a small Ohio barbeque chain just recently opened up and the place is b-u-s-y. Sporting many barbeque styles ranging from St. Louis ribs, Texas brisket to NC barbeque, City Barbeque covers all those types of smoked meats along with traditional Southern sides. Up front, City Barbeque is quick, counter service. We order up the City Sampler with ribs, chicken, pork and brisket along with two sides, corn bread and Texas Toast. It's a lot of food, strong ribs and chicken, the pork and brisket less impressive. But the sides of creamy potato salad and slaw were quite good and fresh. Service is fine for this type of place and the inside was corporate but nicely done. Overall City Barbeque is one of the better barbeque type chain restaurants in the area. It's not NC-style, vinegar-based BBQ, but it's still very delicious. I've eaten here a handful of times with my family and we've gotten a good sampling of their meats and sides. I'll break it down, bullet-point-style: MEATS: -Beef Brisket - The beef brisket is my favorite thing to get at City Barbeque. It's got a smoky crust and the meat is juicy and tender without being overly fatty. If you're only going to get one meat at City Barbeque, make it the beef brisket. You won't regret it. It goes well with the Brush Fire BBQ Sauce. -Ribs - I love the dry rub they use on their ribs - it's bold and smoky with a bit of sweetness. The meat is fall-off-the-bone, but can be just a little dry. However, put some BBQ sauce on it, and you're good to go. It's probably my second favorite meat to get at City Barbeque. -Pulled Pork - While the pork has excellent smoky flavor, the meat tends to be a tad dry. Honestly though, that's just being picky. If you like pulled pork, this one is worth a try. It goes well with the Vinegar BBQ Sauce. A note on the Vinegar BBQ Sauce, though - it's sweeter than your typical NC-style vinegar sauce, so now you've been forewarned. -Chicken Thigh - Juicy and delicious! The meat was fall-off-the-bone, yet so incredibly moist. They do an excellent job with their chicken, that's for sure. SIDES: -Baked Beans - They are a little sweet for my liking, but still very bold flavors and just a classic side to go with any of the above meats. -Cole Slaw - I've only tried the vinegar-based slaw, but I have no complaints about it. You can tell it's home-made, not something you get out of a bag at a grocery store. -Potato Salad - I like City Barbeque's potato salad more than your typical potato salads. I'm not sure I can put my finger on exactly what it is, but I think it has something to do with the amount of acid they put in it. Usually, potato salad is super heavy and mushy, but they add a little more vinegar to cut through the heaviness, and their potatoes still have structural integrity when you bite into it. -Gumbo - It's not what I normally think of when I think gumbo, but it's not bad. It has chicken and sausages in it, so it's a good way of trying those meats without having to get a huge serving of them. -Green Beans - I like that they green beans are not over-cooked and borderline mush. I also like that they use the flat green beans instead of the traditional string beans - probably just because it's different. -Mac N Cheese - I wouldn't bother with their mac n cheese. I wasn't impressed by it - texture or flavor-wise. -French Fries - Their fries can be hit or miss in terms of soggy versus crispy. I personally like my fries with a crisp exterior, but soft interior - which some of the fries were - but some of the fries were just soggy throughout. -Hush Puppies - Pretty standard hush puppies - nothing amazing, but not bad, either. I'll just add that their peach cobbler is on point. If you're in the mood, it's worth a try. The service is hit or miss - some of the people that work there are really nice and helpful, but some appear like they don't really want to be there. It's got a fast casual restaurant feel to it, and the prices reflect that, which I think is fair. The place is clean and the decor is very homey and barbeque-joint-like. Overall, City Barbeque is an excellent option for great food, and I'll definitely be back for some more of that brisket. tl;dr - Get the brisket and ribs + Brush Fire Sauce. Sides are OK. When it comes to BBQ, Mission BBQ is the Gold Standard. I actually have City Barbeque right up there with Mission. The only exception being that Mission BBQ is Veteran owned and they do a lot during the year for Veterans and Active duty as well as First Responders. City BBQ has a fantastic fully involved wet brisket. It is a just have along with the Texas Sausage and pulled pork. A nice selection of BBQ sauces to really satisfy anyone. I never leave City BBQ hungry. I never leave disappointed. Customer Service has always been phenomenal. The staff does a good job of catering to customer needs. They all have great attitudes. Both my wife and son ordered these, but this time they were overcooked so the chicken was dry, and it appeared someone sprinkled raw, dry rub on them after they were cooked. I'm torn on how many stars I should give City Barbeque. On one hand, I enjoyed most of the items we ordered (well, more so the sides). On the other hand, I got a pretty bad stomachache almost immediately after, but I can't really tell if it was from their food or something else. For our party of 7 (four adults and three kids), we ordered the Motherload ($59.99 - enough to feed 6, according to the menu). This included brisket, pulled pork, turkey, 1/2 slab of ribs, 1/2 chicken, 2 sausages, 6 individual sides, cornbread, and Texas toast. For the sides, we went with collard greens, sweet vinegar slaw, two mac and cheeses, hush puppies, and fried okra. The brisket was super fatty but other than that it was good. The pulled pork was extremely dry. Their barbecue sauces only helped this a little bit but it was very hard to eat. The turkey looked like it would be dry but it was surprisingly good. This might have been my favorite meat out of everything. I didn't try the ribs, and the 1/2 chicken was pretty dry as well. The sausages were okay but they were pretty salty and too smokey for my liking. I really enjoyed the sides though, especially the sweet vinegar slaw, and the mac and cheese, which was creamy. I have eaten at City BBQ in Cary four times in two weeks and found the ribs to be the best I've ever had in my life. They were tender and a bit caramelized on the sauce to give it a wonderful flavor. I've also had their BBQ sandwich and it is also incredibly good. I found the staff to always be friendly, even though they are incredibly busy every time I eat there. Everyone has different taste in BBQ, and City isn't Lexington or Eastern style, which is why I love it. It seems to serve Memphis style BBQ and St. Louis style ribs, but that's just my best guess. For the style, City does it better than anywhere else I've ever tried, and I live to eat BBQ. If you enjoy these styles of Q, you should give City a try. read more

I've ordered pickup from here a few times one. Once through their app (you get $5 off your first app order) for curbside pickup which was very easy. They have designated curbside pickup parking spots and the person will open the door and hand you the food. The other time by walking into the restaurant. Both were on time and the food was fresh. I really like their pulled pork sandwich, hush puppies and potato salad. They're extremely generous with their sauces, I would recommend keeping leftover sauces as they make a good meat marinade for later. They've done a good job of developing their app. From what I observed, the inside dining seemed pretty well spaced out. Wow. This is REALLY good BBQ!! Tuesdays is rib day and ribs are 1.25/bone and they are meaty deliciousness! The bark was crusty and very well seasoned. We also got the beef brisket, full cut with bark. That was OUTSTANDING. There are several wet sauces to choose from but the hot is pretty tame. Very impressed with the meat. For sides, we split baked beans which were sweet and full of meat. The corn pudding should be on the dessert menu and is stupidly good. The mac and cheese was creamy but very bland in flavor (sharp cheese, get some and use it!) And the hush puppies were amazing. Very pleased with the meal. The desserts looked good and the entrees were brilliant so we went for it. The peach cobbler was big enough for 3 people but had a lot of breading. The flavor was really good but I like more fruit and less cake. We also got the bananna pudding. Was good but the pudding itself was instant. Oh my goodness, I am in love with City BBQ! This was the first time my boyfriend and I have visited This restaurant and it was amazing! The food was delicious and let me tell you, I could eat like this everyday. They have a large open lay-out on the inside of the restaurant and a beautiful area to eat outdoors. Definitely big enough for large parties. You order at the counter when you first come in. You can actually ask for samples of the sides, the employees recommend you try at least two (super nice!). The employees were awesome, they gave great suggestions and knew so much about every dish. There's a is a drink area (delicious sweet tea) and right next to it, there is a sauce station that offers over 10 homemade bbq sauces We ordered a lot of food and it took less than 5 minutes to receive it all. Great timing y'all! For dinner we got brisket, burnt ends, ribs, and a pulled pork sandwich. The ribs were bite off the bone style & were juicy as can be! My favorites were the Pepsi-honey glazed burnt ends that literally melted in my mouth. I loved the flavor combination. I highly recommend coming to try these. My other favorite dish was the pulled pork sandwich, I am usually not a pulled pork person but this one was amazing. It was topped off with a creamy slaw that I absolutely loved. The brisket and the ribs were also delicious, you can tell they really know what they're doing here. For sides we ended up getting their famous potato salad (happens to be a family recipe that has been passed on for over 100 years), Brunswick stew (super delicious) with big pieces of veggies and brisket, baked beans with brisket in it (omg ), corn pudding, southwest slaw (that is marinated for 18 hours), and delicious cornbread with honey & butter. For dessert we each got banana pudding that was to die for. The banana pudding recipe has been awarded top ten 10 best banana puddings by Martha Stewart. Let me tell you, every bite was full of flavor and every layer got better and better. Do not leave without trying it! Next time I am definitely coming in for some cobbler and bbq chicken! We ate a lot of food today, lol. If you order the mother load ( feeds 6 people), you can get this much food for only $60. It's a great deal for all of this deliciousness. They also have a catering menu which is great because I am definitely looking forward to tailgating this football season with delicious eats. I've lived in North Carolina for over a year now and have only had barbeque once please don't judge me *hides behind desk* I was recommended this place numerous times as a "best place for barbeque" nearby and decided to check it out. My husband has been here for work lunches numerous times and it had some great reviews so I thought I'd try it too! I've been to lots of other, less-authentic barbeque places, but I always appreciate the ability to mix and match sides and meats. You can get things naked, "bunned" or by the pound. They even have online ordering for takeout! They were super friendly and patient with my mouth open "Ummm" trying to decide what to grab for my lunch since there's so many options. I went with the smoked sausage with a side of potato salad and baked beans. My husband had brisket with fries and cornbread! I grabbed some fountain lemonade for myself as well. DAMN was this tasty! I kind of had to laugh when my meal arrived in little components with the sausage looking a little sad and alone in its little cardboard boat, but that's just me being childish. The sausage was savory and perfectly spiced, and they had SO many different types of barbeque sauces I had a lot of fun trying them all. The potato salad was creamy and delicious, I like the type that's almost like mash. While I enjoyed the baked beans, and I'm not sure if this is just a regional thing or whatever, they were SO sweet. Had lunch here - first time in MONTHS that I've eaten out due to COVID. They are serving inside and are very careful about seating, sanitation, and mask protocol. I had the bunless beef brisket with creamy coleslaw and collards. The collards were salty and peppery (black pepper) with a decent amount of pork chunks in them. Quite good! The beef was tender, although brisket does get a little dry. I didn't see if they had a vinegar-based BBQ sauce which would have been the bomb, but the two sauces I was served were great. The creamy coleslaw was as good as I'd hoped. My dining companion had the chicken BBQ and it looked like all white meat. May not have been, but it was heaped in the bun with meat stacked higher than the bun would have been itself. He enjoyed it very much. It was our first time here, and it was mighty good. My family and I really enjoy eating here! It's got great food (get the turkey!!!) and a great atmosphere. Bonus points for having covered outdoor seating that is dog-friendly.
