A few weeks ago the family and I went to City Barbeque in Avon. I have to say I was pretty impressed. The smell of the place was great and the menu options were wonderful and they served local beers, I am always impressed when I chain serves local beers. We all ordered something different and decided to sit out on the patio. Despite the fact the patio overlooks Rockville Road, it was great. It was spacious and there was a variety of tables from high tops, low tops and picnic style. The food. It was really good. My youngest ordered the ribs, I got a Carolina bbq sandwich, my eldest daughter the classic bbq sandwich and my husband the No Name brisket sandwich. We all got the baked beans, they are to die for. So sweet and rich. They had a variety of sauces to compliment the meals and we tried them all. I like the mustard bbq the best. Best Q we've had in a while, even better than what we had recently in Austin. The brisket was tender and the group favorite. The smoked turkey was stellar, pulled pork a bit salty but nothing a good sauce can't cover. The chicken exceeded expectation, and ribs not too smoky and delicious. corn bread was just ok, should have gotten the corn pudding. Highly recommend getting the deluxe sampler. Seems fitting to write this review after having gotten my fix just last night from City BBQ and then today for lunch. I love you, pulled pork. I never considered myself that big of a BBQ fan until my mom, husband and I decided to check this place out when my mom came into town. So. Good. Consider me addicted. We started the first few times by getting the sandwiches and sides. My favorite to this day is still the corn pudding. (Although, they just brought sweet potato casserole in as the seasonal side!! Must try!) Wasn't a fan of the beans, but I think they would appeal to some. But one really awesome deal we stumbled upon is their Pig Up N' Go menu that allows you to get large servings for multiple people. I am choosey on giving away five stars, as I consider it means the ulitimate best-it-gets-no-better-than-this. I'm not against that state of thinking for City BBQ. But still, I'm going to hold out on giving them five stars (for now) and let my frequent visitor status speak more starpower. I've had several items from them. My first experience with City BBQ was at a Yelp Event (that I have yet to review...i'll never be elite this way), and was immediately ready for a visit. They served pulled pork and mac& cheese, both of which were scrumptious. I stopped there within a few days after passing by the one in Avon with my sister. This time I tried their chopped brisket and enjoyed life in a cup of their lemonade. It was delightful as well. But one of the things that really made me feel BBQ-special is the fact that they have a serving bar of onions, pickles and heated sauces!!!! Heated sauces??? Where do they do this at ? I loved it. Along with my brisket, I tried their corn pudding which was the perfect rendition of amazing!!! It had a lightly browned crust and was full of sweet corn yumminess. We ate plenty and had plenty of leftovers. When you dine in, you get the unlimited refill treatment, INCLUDING the lemonade. This was music to my soul and I enjoyed ever calorie filled gulp of their soury-sweet liquid lemon love!!!!!! Since then, I've ventured back and forth as a regular between the 10th street location and the one in Avon when I'm with my sister. I have been alone, with my sister, with my sister and my niece, with my neighbors and great friends and perhaps even in my dreams with my shadow. I've dined on their ribs, the baked beans, mac & cheese, peach cobbler (which is enough for many leftovers if you are a party of one like myself), corn pudding, catfish, brisket, pulled pork, Lolo's Pulled Pork sammich and the Mo'Cowbell sandwhich, which is their brisket served cheesesteak style. I will say that is something I won't order again. It wasn't nasty or anything. I just think it was mixing two worlds that don't go together. I'd rather have my brisket on a piece of their good ole Texas Toast or one of those buttery buns they have. I love how if you've never been, they will give you a gracious sampling of the pork and the brisket. That's the way you keep people coming back. I love this place! It's become somewhat of a Saturday tradition to split a platter after leaving the gym. The meats are all smoked and really flavorful. The side dishes are tastier than I expected. The line moves quickly, you get your own drinks, and sauces are served warm! In addition to the fountain sodas and the iced tea, there are bottled craft sodas kept in bottles by the door. Sometimes we split a Cheerwine. I've tried all the meats: turkey breast, sausage, brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. They're all fantastic. I don't think I can pick a favorite. Side-dish-wise, all are very good. The corn pudding and corn bread are definitely my favorite. I also like the BBQ baked beans, mac and cheese, and seasoned green beans. The portions are HUGE. When we split a platter between the 2 of us we usually have leftovers. So even though the price looks higher, the portions definitely match. Sometimes they have seasonal specialties like smoked hams or chicken. Often there's a "special" side dish in addition to the regular menu items. This place is an Ohio based chain that started in 1999. I've been to most of the BBQ joints in Indianapolis and the others really don't come close to this one in terms of cleanliness, flavor, quality, service, and consistency. Seriously...go to workout at the Avon LA Fitness around 10am. As you're leaving, inhale deeply and let your nose lead you to City Barbeque. This is definitely my favorite place to eat in the Avon/Plainfield area. I've been living out this way since December 2013 and was reluctant to stop since other choices in the area are commercial and don't offer anything out of the norm. Thankfully, I stopped in one afternoon and have now become a regular. With this being my fourth visit in the last month, I'm more than satisfied with the different menu options I've selected. The food I ordered was good but the sheer quantity was ridiculous. The sandwiches are 1/2 lb. I could have gotten something smaller but only if I ordered three! I ordered the sausage sandwich, which comes topped with vinegar slaw, plus fries and their seasonal side, cucumbers and onions. It was hot out, so I started out with the cucumbers and onions -- delicious. Lightly pickled and oh so refreshing. The fries were nothing special; I brought the bulk of them home. The sausage was good but next time, since you order up front, I'll have my fiance order something for me from the kids menu! I had a hard time finding ketchup. It wasn't on the outdoor tables and we had to hunt around for a bottle for my fries. Service was basically non-existent once we got our food from the counter; a waitress came over to put BBQ sauce on our table but didn't offer to refill our drinks or ask if we needed anything. I understand now why there's a sign directing you to ignore the "tip" line on your receipt -- nothing is done whatsoever to earn a tip! (Hopefully that means they pay their employees a decent wage.) This location is a little out of the way and, coupled with the enormous potions, I can't say that I'll make it a point to return. We did get a free rewards card and I turned that over to my fiance since he works in the area. Once nice touch is that they stock local beer (I noticed Sun King) but I didn't check on the prices. I'd been familiar with City Barbecue from my days working in Ohio. So, when I saw the sign go up on Rockville Rd., I was pretty excited. Avon simply has no other BBQ joint. The food here has always been fresh. We've had the turkey, pulled pork, brisket, and sausage. They're all good, but I've been most please with the smoked turkey. You can order each of the meats as a sandwich or without a bun as a platter with w sides. The corn pudding is phenomenal, with the corn bread running a distant second in terms of sides. The baked beans are also very good. I like the fact that they keep their bbq sauces warm on a steam table, and that they have a number of to-go containers available on the counter. Portions here are large. The city sampler is definitely enough for two, but even when we order our own meals, we typically end up taking half of our sides home. My only advice, avoid any 'special' entrees. The last time we were there, they had a spicy chipotle mango pulled pork. I have the feeling that the prior day's pulled pork had been covered with a sickeningly sweet sauce and priced to moved. read more

Having lived in Columbus OH off and on in my life, I've been eating City Barbeque since a couple years after the first one opened. When I moved to Indy I was rather pleased to find that there was one available here as well. I'm a little picky about my barbeque. I like it dry until I put sauce on it, but the meat needs to be tender and juicy on its own with solid flavour that doesn't necessarily require sauce. City BBQ has always hit this right on the nose at every location I've tried. This location is no different. Maybe I'm just biased because I've been eating it for so long, but I will say that for the ohio/indiana area, this is just about as good as accessible BBQ gets. The only downside I've ever found to City Barbeque is that it can be a little noisy in the dining room, and people often seem to be a little lax in controlling the volume and unruliness of their children. That's just something you have to deal with to get the good BBQ I guess. read more

I've been dying to try this place for some time now and was finally able to pop in. It was a lot more casual than what I expected, which was a bonus to me. You walk in and order at a counter and then pick up your food at the end of a separate counter. The pulled pork was deliciously tender and I love the fact that they have their 3 different sauces in warmers by the soda machine. I had the mashed potatoes and a salad as my sides. The salad wasn't really fresh so next time I'll probably skip it and just get the creamy Mac and cheese. I would say it is a great value for the cost and a really relaxed atmosphere. Through some snafu between talking with the manager on the phone to place our order and picking up on thanksgiving a lot of peoples orders (including myself) were lost and no turkeys were available. Having moved from Kansas City, I'm a big fan of BBQ. I was able to finally stop in to try City BBQ today, and I have to say, I was not impressed. The service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. The food came out promptly, as well. However, my Brisket sandwich was dry, bland, and tepid. My fries were also only lukewarm. I did not feel that my meal was made fresh. I would say these guys need to take more time preparing their food, and perhaps that means training their cooks. It didn't really taste like seasoned, slow-cooked BBQ. More just like meat that had been heated. read more

With two hungry men to feed, we head out to City Barbecue to sample the newest BBQ joint on the southwest side of town. I really appreciated that the staff offered us a free taste of their meats before ordering. We ended up ordering their big sampler, which had a 1/2 slab of ribs, 1/4 chicken, and about a 1/2 lb each of pulled pork and brisket. It also came with 2 pieces of cornbread and 2 sides, we chose fries and mac and cheese. Decent brisket and pulled pork, both were tender and tasty with the real smoke flavor. Ribs were just ok, not as moist or meaty as baby backs. The fries were particularly good, clearly fresh-cut and skin-on, these were up there with the fries from Five Guys. I loved mixing their sweet and spicy bbq sauces together for the perfect blend. The pork and brisket didn't need sauce, but the ribs sure did. This was plenty of food for 3 of us, one of whom was a 17 yr old boy who probably ate more than his father and I combined. Prices are reasonable, dining area was noisy but clean, and they have a large patio as well. If looking for a good, casual meal in Avon I'd probably go back. read more

My family and I were in from Oklahoma and were trying to find a place to eat in the downtown area, but it was so packed so we decided to find a place outside of Indianapolis downtown area. Found this place on around me and decided to give it a try. First, they were very friendly and helpful with making food selections. So much delicious food! I got the sausage with corn pudding and baked beans and enjoyed every second of my meal. They have a wide variety of sauces and let you try samples of the meats. The pork and the brisket were both really good. However, the winner here for me was the corn pudding. It was so authentic and delicious and reminded me of my grandma's corn pudding which was always on point. My husband got the sausage with Mac and cheese and our son got Mac and cheese as well. My husband and I tried City BBQ for the first time last night and we were very impressed! The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful, the place was clean and the food was really good. We tried the Deluxe Sampler (I think that's what it was called) and got mac and cheese and green beans as our sides. The chicken was so moist it glistened and tasted great! The ribs weren't "fall off the bone" tender but they tasted pretty good (could have used a little less smoky flavor). The pulled pork and brisket were a little stringy but neither of us mind it that way and again, they both tasted great. The sauces were also very good and it was nice to have pickles and jalapeños with our meal. The green beans were amazing! And, don't get me started on the cornbread! I am a sucker for good cornbread and it is really good here!!! Hubby had a Sun King beer (Lots of Hops) that he thoroughly enjoyed and loved getting a free glass with his purchase (a special they have on Wednesdays) and I had a bottle of cherry cola which is my favorite so we were both pleased with the selection of beverages. Our two main complaints were the mac and cheese had mushy pasta and a very strange taste and the peach cobbler (very kindly given to us on the house when we said it was our first time) tasted as if it was spoiled.
