The beef brisket was good but it was just a touch dry. It's nothing that can't be fixed with a little sauce. I prefer the green chili sauce which is wierd because usually I'm more of a spicy bbq sauce person. I found the peach habanero sauce to be too sweet with not enough heat. There are plenty of other sauces you can try if u dont like one. The pickles are great however I wasn't impressed with my other sides. The collards were a little too salty for me and the mac and cheese was pretty plain and tasteless. If it wasn't for the sides I would have given 4 stars. read more

Stopped by this local establishment Saturday evening while headed back into town. I definitely prefer to give strong positive reviews but as I have stated many times to be true to myself, Yelp and the establishment I am reviewing I must keep it real regardless of experience. I had heard a few pros and cons about City BBQ and decided to stop in at a whim to give it a try. Once we got to the counter to order we were immediately informed they they were out of the BBQ Pulled Pork, Cornbread and Hushpuppies. So basically the first 3 things I ordered were out of stock, how is this possible if you are a tried and established restaurant, it seems to me that you should forecast and not run out of your staples. I finally settled on ordering the Beef Brisket after the suggestion of the counter server with two sides which included coleslaw and potato salad. Zac ordered BBQ with Mac and Cheese and BBQ Bake Beans. My Beef Brisket was extremely salty, dry and downright disappointing. The coleslaw which was mayonnaise base was extremely tasty. The potato salad was a mixture of mayonnaise and mustard base and was tasty as well but not a favorite. Zac's side choices were par in regards to the macaroni and cheese but the BBQ Baked Beans were definitely way to heavy on the BBQ sauce and we ended up having to discard the container after just a few small bites because of the overbearing flavor. We did chose to eat in the restaurant with 30 minutes to closing and even though we were not asked to hurry we felt very rushed because the cleaning girls were working around our table and taking everything up and constantly staring at us probably wondering when we were going to leave so they could clean our table. I personally feel this should never happen if you have paying customers in your dining room especially if it is within 30 minutes or more of closing time. Unfortunately this is one place I would not go back to. The overall taste, quality of food and lack of available items and poor customer service was a real turn off. read more

We have never had such a bad experience in our life! We called in a takeout order, got home the order was wrong...very wrong! We called back to get it corrected and the girl answering the phone (Lee) was very rude...when we asked to speak to a manager she said your not talking to a manger and HUNG UP ON US! Yes...hung up on us! The food was awful, chicken tenders were burnt, pork was dry, and turkey?...oh yeah...we never got our turkey. Came for an early dinner and the place filled up pretty quickly. It's great for a casual dinner! I ordered the 3 lil sandwiches platter with pork, brisket and turkey. For the sides, I got the cornbread and baked beans. Surprisingly, I liked the turkey sandwich most out of the three. I thought it would be dry, but nope, that was the brisket. The pulled pork was pretty good though. I really liked the cornbread, perfect texture! I can't say the same for the baked beans, just okie. I can't help it, but I love sweet tea, loved it here too! My sister ordered the City Sampler, which seriously could be for two people. It looked good, but definitely heavy. She thought the brisket was also on the dry side, so I honestly don't recommend it. As for the service, the girls at the register were friendly and nice while helping me decide what to order. After placing the order, you can grab a seat and they'll bring it to you. I ordered a city sampler and the platter was supposed to come this Texas toast and sides and I did not get the Texas toast. I ordered 2 separate orders of Texas toast and in total I only got 2 singular pieces with my food. Also the food was extremely dry and did not taste good. read more

Went to the Toledo location a few times, the dining area is usually dirty, the food is average at best. They have cut back on their portions and discontinued BBQ ribs as of June 2023. Here's a good one, we tried to place an order a day or two after the Super Bowl. I was informed that they only had a few items available "because the meat hadn't arrived yet" and management was upset that the staff was "wasting too much food" so they delayed placing an order with their purveyor. The place is understaffed and horribly managed but it doesn't seem to matter because people continue to come. read more

We have been long overdue in reviewing this excellent addition to Toledo area restaurants, though it is much closer to home than most. Our first couple of visits to City Bbq were during the first few months of their opening and involved dining in. Neither of us experienced the ribs on those occasions. Quite honestly, I remember little of the fare, only that the atmosphere was as expected for rib joint, service was very good and the food was prepared and served well. Since I've come to rely less frequently on full meat meals, I know our selections then centered on sandwiches and side orders. Everything was exactly as ordered. We came away fully satisfied. More recently, we decided to give the ribs a try. The past couple of years have found us most often at a friend's eatery when seeking good ribs. We decided it was time for a change. So glad we did. Both these visits were for carry out ribs only.The ribs were among the best we've ever had in the Midwest. We gave no instructions for sauces, yet several included were perfect choices to complement the fall off the bone ribs, no utensils needed. Actually, no sauce was necessary; though we had both plain and with different (sweet & spicy) sauces. Excellent all. Everything prepared to order, ready on arrival and still piping hot when opened. Juicy, minimal fat. Only side we ordered was corn pudding. Hot, flavorful and Yummy! Finished with the wish there was more. So far, city barbecue is our favorite bbq place in Toledo. I had the pulled pork sandwich, brisket and baked beans and the coleslaw, which Is literally the best I've ever had. SO had the 2 meat sampler with brisket and turkey, French fries and collard greens. The collard greens could have been rinsed more as they were a bit gritty, but otherwise a darn near close to perfect meal. Sat on the patio tonight too...added bonus! read more

With all the hassle going on this is still a great place for ribs. We both ordered ribs which did not disappoint. Very tender, like slide off the bone tender. The shredded chicken was moist and the vinegar coleslaw was outstanding. Some of the best-baked beans around the area. The wait staff was polite and professional. Went for supper with friends, we had our usual pulled pork which is the best in the city! Always tender and juicy, you barely need to chew it! The sides are a nice range of selections and can accommodate pretty much any dietary concerns. They switch a few out seasonally which provides nice change and variety. I LOVE the condiment area with the range of sauces and the crockpot with warm sauce, and plenty of it! Nothing worse than running out of sauce! If you've never been, you must go! As we walked up to the door, we saw a sign that said they were out of beef brisket. No biggie. It happens, right? Then, when we order, the young woman operating the cash register doesn't know how to enter any of the food we order. Again, no big deal. People often need to be trained when they start a new job. I get it. But then they get my order wrong. I got a meal which is essentially a sampler of three sandwiches and two sides. Because they were out of brisket, I ordered two pulled pork and one sausage mini-sandwiches... the exact same thing my wife ordered (BTW... the young woman tried to total out our order before I even ordered my food. I guess she figured we were going to share the sampler... again, my patience was being tested). Well, my wife's order was correct but instead of two pulled pork mini-sandwiches... one of mine was chicken. I immediately saw it but thought, what the heck, I'll give it a try. Finally we sat down to eat and the sauce bottles were so dirty and sticky that it grossed me out. I expect this to sometimes happen at BBQ joints... ribs result in messy hands. But these bottles were so gummed up that the sauces wouldn't come out. I had to squeeze very hard, which caused the lid on the bottle to burst off, resulting in half the contents on my plate. Lucky for me, it all missed my sandwiches. Let's talk a bit more about how filthy this place was. Not only were the bottles sticky and gummed up (I tried several), but the soda machine, tables, and seats were too. Everything seem to have a build up of "sauce gunk" on it. In my opinion, this was clear evidence of many days' worth of lack of adequate cleaning. So... on to the food. My shredded chicken was colder than room temperature, the sausage was just okay, but the pulled pork was pretty darn tasty. The sauces all seemed a bit runny and, despite there being four or five sauce choices, there really wasn't much difference in taste among them. I will say that the sides were very good. We had corn pudding, green beans with bacon, and the best hush puppies I have ever eaten. These hush puppies are the reason I awarded this place two stars, otherwise it would have received a single star. Ultimately, this place had mediocre food, is filthy, had so-so service, and - lest I forget - is way over-priced. I don't recommend eating here. read more

I've always been partial to North Carolina BBQ. Although City-Q does brisket, it is certainly not primarily a Texas style BBQ place. Their Pulled Pork is executed with perfection. Perfect amount of smoke, tender and moist. No sauce really even needed, but the NC style thin, vinegar-based sauce is very authentic. A Pulled Pork Platter (NC style with slaw on the sammich) two sides, and a sweet tea and I'm in Hog Heaven. I dig the casual dining setting. Yeah, they do brisket and chicken, etc, but it's all about the pig, man! Keep in mind, you're going to be eating off of brown paper, not fine china. If you don't have experience eating at REAL BBQ joints, this may be hard to embrace. At least they have tables, both indoors and out. At most of the roadside BBQs in the south, you'll be eating on your tailgate. This is a great destination when out on the bikes. A must try. read more

Their Mac & cheese is amazing, would recommend the hush puppies, corn bread honestly you should just try them all! I have been a fan of City BBQ for years, starting when I was a kid and my parents would make a special stop in Columbus during any road trip just to eat at the City BBQ there. Then I lived in Lexington, KY for a couple of years when they opened two locations there, and ate there almost on a weekly basis. After being back in Cleveland for several months, I was missing real BBQ. I wish City would open a location in Cleveland. They have absolutely no competition in this town! Anyway, my dining partner and I shared the big sampler platter because we wanted all the meats, and it was a good deal for everything you get. Less than $30 (we upgraded the sides to pint size) and we got pulled pork, brisket, ribs, and chicken, two pint sides, plus the texas toast and cornbread. Enough for probably 3 people. Love the BBQ sauces in bottles on each table. All in all I was a little disappointed in the Toledo location because it didn't have the trendy BBQ joint feel to it that the Lexington locations have. It just kinda felt like a fast food place. But the food was pretty much the same. Except for the Gumbo. That was nowhere close to being as good as the gumbo in Lexington. I used to love this place and thought after remodeling it would be even better WRONG This evening (Friday) I stopped for dinner. They are sold out of ribs. They are sold out of pulled pork. The wife left me to fend for myself, so I stopped here on my way home from work. I got half a chicken with hush puppies and fries, taking it home. The first half of the chicken was very good, but the second half was very dry, and tough. I didn't eat too much of that half. The fries were soggy, rather tasteless too, again I didn't eat much of them due to the quality. And now hush puppies. Roughly a quarter of the outside was black. Not slightly overdone, black. How anyone there could have served them is beyond me. Just from their appearance they should have been thrown out. And two employees saw them, not just one. I tried scraping the burnt part off, but the rest of them even though not so charred was still very bad. I think part of the problem was that the oldest employee must have been 22 or so, no one taking responsibility for the place. Had I eaten it there I would have taken it to the counter and demanded a proper replacement. The kid probably figured he was doing good, not wasting the food by passing it off on someone. Instead he assured I won't ever be back in this place. I had been going to say how you could get the same food items from Shorty's for about the same price or maybe a couple of dollars more. But I looked both places up to be sure before I spoke. Shorty's is two dollars cheaper for half a chicken and two sides!!! Plus the food there genuinely very good. read more

4 of the last 6 times we've ordered pick-up, we've had an item missing. 3 of those times we had it replaced. The 4th we didn't bother because driving back is inconvenient. The food is mostly good, but the fries are typically limp. Tonight's fries were undercooked and cold. The chipotle bbq sandwich that I have ordered in the past had onions in it this time, which it never has before and is not indicated on the menu. I don't think we'll be ordering again. read more

It's fresh and delish! Casual fun dining for family or group of friends. My favorite has to be the tender, perfectly seasoned brisket and home made thick cut fries. Greens and beans, kid's favorite Mac and cheese. Good variety of smoked meats and sides- all tasty, keeps everyone happy. Not for vegetarians! Cold beer, lemonade and tea. Texas sheet cake. Picnic tables and paper towels. Sauces to everyone's taste- sweet, mustard, spicy BBQ. We love it! The only black mark-we've never had a take out order that was correct. City has great BBQ- I'm especially partial to the brisket sandwiches. But the best thing on the menu- SHEET CAKE. Seriously! The cake is light and fluffy, and it's topped with the most decadent chocolatey icing that you can tell is made from scratch.
