Hidden amongst a few other businesses, City Cafe and Bakery is one of the BEST BREAKFASTS IN DALLAS (in my opinion). They serve a variety of Ethiopian options and my fave is the Fata followed by the fuul. But to be clear, nothing on their menu misses- it's all stellar. read more

I've been to a few Ethiopian places in Dallas (not enough to be honest), but this one is the only one to have me coming back more than twice. Maybe it's because it is the only place I know of that serves Habesha (Ethiopian/Eritrean) breakfast in the Metroplex. And it's the first time I've had it anywhere. And for an ethnic breakfast, this is as good as it gets for the DFW, especially when most other popular ethnic groups in the Dallas area pretty much DON'T eat healthy breakfast or drink coffee in the morning (Asians eat soup, Mexicans eat tacos, etc) - don't look at me, you know it's true that breakfast isn't their real forte! And thank god for the Ethiopians, for being the people that gave the world coffee (yes, it originated in Ethiopia) and has some interesting Arabic and Italian influences (after all the Horn of Africa points to the Arabian Peninsula and the area allowed easy access for the Italians to later colonize Eritrea, and maybe further enrich the coffee-drinking culture?). So what to order here... Baklava? Sounds good. Tiramisu with a cappuccino? I wouldn't mind at all. While these are all fine, the real star of the place lies in its menu. FUL, similar to Arabic foul mudammas (mashed fava beans), is made spicier here but they'll happily oblige to put the spicy stuff on the side. But even so, they're well prepared, filling, and great with a side of eggs and french bread. I also in particularly love the quanta firfir which is a spicy stewed mixture of dried beef tidbits with broken pieces of injera bread, and this comes with additional injera. Do I have a preference between the two? No... depends on my mood, but if you come with a dining companion, just order both and enjoy the meal (and good coffee). Staff is both warm and friendly, and surprisingly the patrons are too - as they won't shy to make recommendations as well. The two times I came here, the place was packed, and with people watching the soccer games on television. This place is a MUST for those wanting to experience a true taste of ethnic Dallas, especially for breakfast. read more

I wanted to finish my Ethiopian themed lunch and went to the bakery next to Desta to find dessert. I ordered a machiato and baklava and sat down. It's a very small restaurant/bakery but very cozy. And in the 3 minutes that I was waiting for my drink to be made I saw several people coming in and out picking up their cake and other baked good orders. I liked the buzzing atmosphere and looked around at the food being brought out to different tables. Everything looked awesome. I'd like to eat lunch here one day. Good coffee, didn't care much for one of the lemon cakes.It tasted to dry and lacked flavour to me. Guess I was comparing it with the delicious lemonade cake I tried the week before next door at Desta. I see that they have an actual food menu and I'd love to return and give it try. Hands down the best Italian Ethiopian Sponge Cake. This place is a go to for birthdays, showers and celebrations, their cakes are so light and fluffy. I've been coming to City Cafe for five years and I love there food and coffee just as much as their cake. This place is a well known bakery to all Ethiopians and Eritreans so, I would recommend anyone culturally curious or just looking for a new go to cafe to come here. read more

Stepped in for breakfast. Service was very lukewarm, but the delicious breakfast was quite good and made up for it I suppose. Breakfast was served with two big bread loaves which were Ok... Kinda bland for my taste (I'm a sucker for warm, moist and "buttery" breads that have that melt in your mouth quality). I've only had their breakfast so far, but do stop in for it because it will not disappoint. Coffee was good, too! read more

Wow! We just had an excellent experience at City Cafe. It had been about 10 years since we were last there. The dining room has been completely remodeled. I'd describe it as contemporary chic. A bonus, it is quiet enough that you can actually hear your dinner companions. The host recommend an excellent rose for me on this hot Dallas night. It was exactly what I wanted, and he worked from me telling him that "It is hot. Give me something for hot." Wonderful. We then enjoyed the hummus trio (homemade) and grilled pita bread. Then, hubby had the scallops and I had the halibut special. Again, flawless. We ended with their signature dessert, which I would describe as angel food toffee cake. The service was excellent and everyone seemed genuinely interested in whether we were enjoying it all. We will be back soon, and you should check it out. read more

They are definitely on top of this Covid thing. Normally you would be able to come in and try out cakes but they made it possible to enjoy and sample in the comfort of you home. In my case, comfort of my car. Me and my future husband definitely enjoyed them and the taste has us super excited. Only reason I'm not giving them a well deserved 5 stars is because I haven't ordered my wedding cake yet. I review is based on initial email contact, face to face visit and the amazing sample cakes. I'm sure I'll be back to add that last Star in 2021 :)

Our table was already set up with a birthday card and flowers, which made the night feel even more special. Our server was amazing--super attentive, hilarious, and genuinely a great dude. He took his time explaining the menu and guided us in the right direction with our food selections. Now the Wagyu steak... absolutely PERFECT. Easily one of the top 3 steaks I've ever had, and honestly it might be #1. It was cooked perfectly, incredibly tender, and literally melted in my mouth. Every bite was worth it. They finished the night by bringing out a birthday dessert, which was the perfect ending to an already amazing dinner. Between the atmosphere, attention to detail, service, and food, Evelyn really made the birthday celebration feel special. 10/10 all around. I would HIGHLY recommend checking this place out, especially for a birthday, date night, or special occasion. Definitely a spot I'd come back to!

I think the they were ready a while back, but our waitress just didn't get them out to us on time. As a result, the dumplings were not hot. It really degraded the experience of the dish. We also had the orange chicken and Sichuan DanDan noodles. The flavors in the chicken were good, but the ends of the chicken were kind of tough, and the noodles seems kind of slapped together with not enough sauce. There was barely any sesame paste. The last time I had these noodles, there were perfect, so it was really disappointing to have this batch be so off. The waitress was pretty inattentive throughout our meal later on, a manager checked in on us, and we had to ask her for the check since our waitress was no where to be found. Overall, we left with a bad impression of this meal. Knowing the Uptown Dumpling is capable of so much more is just a tough pill to swallow. We really loved our last experience here, but this most recent visit was a disaster. It may be a while before we decide to dine here again.

Where do I start? -Food..I have tried most of the breakfast menu and every time they exceeded my expectation. -Coffee and cake...let me simply put in " I am a fun" oh I can't have enough of it I usually take one for the road. - The owners both husband and wife---oh they are very friendly and they come out from the kitchen and greet their customers and ask how we like what we ordered almost all the time. - Service--the waitresses need training. They move so slow as if they are carrying weight on their feet. I am not going to ding a star for that hoping the owners will train them or get them to hit the road. All in all this Cafe is our family's weekly after church breakfast outing and will be for a long time. read more
