This is a cozy little place with a good variety on the menu - grilled and fried seafood, chicken and steaks, sandwiches and burgers, salads- something for everyone. The Shrimp po-boy, served on soft bread, has really good house breaded fresh shrimp (not frozen), and dressed just right (lettuce, mayo, and tomatoes). The corn and crab bisque is good and creamy, with a hint of crab-boil seasoning. The chargrilled oysters were very good! Lots of cheese and butter, and a big slab of bread. Fish tacos (blackened drum today) were good, with a spicy sauce (but not overpowering). Served with black beans and rice (good, but nothing spectacular). Everything we had was done just right. I have friends who are regulars here and I think I will have to follow their lead. read more

The "catfish atchafalaya" seriously lacked seasoning in the etouffee sauce. They covered catfish nuggets with etouffee sauce, leaving them soggy and lacking flavor. I asked for a piece of catfish separately after just to have something I could eat , and was charged for that as well, again catfish nuggets clearly frozen from a bag. While the chargrilled oysters taste good, 3/6 were so small, mostly cheese and seasoning for $16! Won't be back. read more

Small back story i live by in the nearby Shenandoah subdivision and eat here pretty regularly. I ate here this evening with my wife and the food was good, our server was great, but the atmosphere was a negative star. There was an elderly looking female demeaning servers and overall just being rude to other customers. I had an issue with my food it tasted like it had gone bad and told my server about it and that i wanted to speak to a manager. My server left and came back and they informed me that elderly woman was there manager "MONIQUE". MONIQUE would not come speak to me. I asked the server if theyd remove my food because two bites didnt equal me eating it in my eyes. The server told me MONIQUE doesn't remove items and that the server would have to pay for it. That made me so mad not because i lost $20 but because that violates so many labor laws towards the server. I apologized to the server for causing them trouble boxed up my "food" and ill feed it to the dogs at home. MONIQUE Needs to be fired and given a reality check mam i hope you see this just because your old doesn't mean you can treat people like crap. I hope your bosses see this and make you do proper training or terminate you. I probably wont come back here because that woman is just disgusting. read more

This a a really cute little place that serves hamburgers, plate lunches, charbroiled oysters, and especially Po boys. Amazing service and food was delicious. As a born and bred Cajun, seafood is almost a requirement for existence. However, living in North Louisiana limits the availability of really good fried shrimp and oysters. Went here for Sunday brunch with the fiance. The whole experience was not where it should have been. The wait was about 15 minutes, no problem there. However, once seated we waited some time before someone asked for our drink order. That young lady we never saw again. Someone else dropped off our drinks and scurried off. Quite some time later, the manager appeared and asked if someone took our order yet. We stated no, so he proceeded to take it. From that point forward the manager waited our table, but he was clearly overwhelmed every time he returned. My fiance's entree (Shrimp etouffee) came with extremely overcooked and dried out rice. Upon complaining, he received a newly prepared entree. However, the new entree was missing an item, the garlic bread. We mentioned this shortcoming and were gifted a bread basket. Then, we realized he never received his side salad. After mentioning it to the manager we were asked if we still wanted it. Umm of course we still want it. I ordered the California omelet made with egg whites. The chef tried but failed to fully separate the whites from the yolks. The potatoes it was served with had no seasoning and the biscuit was hard. Overall, my fiance said his food tasted good but was missing something. It was not memorable. My food was okay but overtly bland. We were given a complimentary bread pudding for all the issues we encountered. The bread pudding itself was good but the sauce was nasty. We love City Cafe, But... The last two times I've been there for a group party, an older woman (might be the owner) practically freaks out over any small request. Even adding a chair for someone unexpected sends her into clenched jaw mode with a shrill response. It's a small request for an unexpected attendee. She should be used to this in the restaurant business. These are not my parties. I've only been an attendee, but I feel bad for the host because the response from this woman is cringe worthy. Food: I've ordered a variety of different items from appetizers to main entrees to various sandwiches. The burger and other sandwiches are very good, pasta dishes are great, and what used to be the best was the Shrimp & Grits. It was one of my family favorites. It used to be a grit cake and the rich sauce that it was cooked in was excellent. The Shrimp & Grits was a 5 star dish, but it's a 2 to 2.5 stars. I had it once and was not told they changed it and was very disappointed. I actually thought the wrong entree was given to me. They do have plenty of other awesome dishes to choose from. Service: I've always had a great dining experience. The staff is always friendly and they do a great job of refilling drinks. They are consistent and I can't say I've ever had a bad experience. Get here early for dinner if you go on a Thursday or Friday because it can be a 30 to 60 minute wait time. Ambiance: I've always felt like the restaurant has a warm feeling. I always feel comfortable going to City Cafe and it's one of my top 5 recommendations to eat in BR. They used to have live music on the patio on Friday, another one of my favorites. It has been a couple of years since I've been here, but this is where my step-daughters chose to have their birthday dinners. We had a large party, and City Cafe was able to accommodate us in a nice sized room. I felt sorry for our waitress, but she knocked it out of the park with her service. She kept our drink glasses full, and got the food out to us promptly. My wife had a Cheeseburger with Fries, and I had the Shrimp Poboy. Mine came out perfect, but my wife had requested her burger well-done and it came out with some pink still visable. The waitress took it back and brought it back out perfect. Average Louisiana restaurant in a space that has a casual pub feel. Nothing special or particularly memorable. I had the blackened shrimp wrap which was ok/w9uld never order again it lacked any crisp texture and was very smushy. My daughter had the fried catfish which was delicious. My partner had a seafood pasta dish that was ok. The oysters looked good I regretted not getting the oyster salad combo. The service was very nice and food came out quickly. Everything was delicious! I had the seafood stuffed shrimp with jambalaya (it was a daily special - I'm guessing. It wasn't on the menu). He had "The Cajun" (large grilled fish with angel hair pasta and topped with a plethora of seafood sautéed in a light butter sauce with mushrooms, bell pepper and green onions. It came with a side of broccoli & cheese. We also had the Pepper Jelly Shrimp appetizer - lightly fried (and crisp), shrimp drizzled with pepper jelly. It was delightful. I need to mention the Bacon Honey Mustard salad dressing that came with our dinner salads...Oh My Yummmm! Ever since I've heard that City Cafe was a favorite for some of the best chargrilled oysters in BR, I had to try it. Needless to say, I fell in love and it's been my go to spot on Tuesday's. Why Tuesday's, you ask? Well, they have an oyster special during dinner time which is $1.09 per chargrilled oyster which makes a dozen $13 instead of the usual $18. Who doesn't love saving a little money?! There's a lot of fried food on the menu which I try to avoid, but I've tried their fried eggplant sticks with marinara which was tasty and the portion was generous. I usually order the large house salad (with extra everything, lol) with sensation dressing to balance out all the bread I eat with my oysters. I've had a handful of different servers, but Madelyn has been of my service more recently and she never disappoints. Everyone at the establishment is friendly from what I've experienced, even the old man bussing tables. Overall, City Cafe has good food and good service. read more
