I was never a fan of City Mill because it always seams that they don't have what I need. Lately they have won me over with their customer service. Even when they're short staffed they have helped me right away with paints, keys and lastly, Tanner doing a fantastic job cutting glass louvers for me. Locally owned business...I like to shop at City Mill..they have lots of convenient locations and they are locally owned. The salesperson I had to day (I think his name was Francis) was new, but very attentive and helped me find what I needed. He also insisted on carrying the item to the cashier and then to my car...great service! Unfortunately, I have been to some stores where the people are not as helpful..but I'll continue to shop there and support local business whenever I can. read more

I find City Mill is fine for picking up basic home improvement and gardening items. The selection is the largest or least expensive but it is available and it saves a trip out to a box box store. Parking is readily available and convenient when you have a full cart or bulky items to take home. The best thing I like is the service. The people there know you are dropping in from the neighborhood and they appreciate your business. The best ones are at the paint center - right in the middle of the store in front of the cashiers. These guys know a lot about all sorts of products City Mill carries. They've been helpful many a time. read more

I do my very best to shop at locally owned companies. I'll even pay a price premium to support a local company over a multinational corporation. That said, I will go to this store as little as possible. The workers are generally not knowledgeable about the products they carry and aren't much help if you don't know exactly what you need. On several visits I've been told they will have what I'm looking for at Home Depot or Lowe's. Also good luck finding an employee. My most recent experience involved trying to get propane during the approach of Hurricane Lane. When I stopped by in the evening I was told they were out..ok, not a problem. The worker who accepted tanks told me they would get a delivery that night. In the morning I called and was told I could bring my tank in. When I went in, the worker was really rude, snatched the paper out of my hand and told me they had none and couldn't accept my tank. Not apologetic or polite..just rude. And that's where I draw the line, I'm just not shopping there. I'll spend the extra 20 minutes to go to Home Depot to get treated with some respect. read more

It's a shame that City Mill Hawaii Kai has gone down hill over the last couple of years. I understand that there is a supply chain issue but don't sell products in your store that are absolutely junk to make up for the inventory shortage. Also the associates are not on the same page and seems that there is no definitive policy for the store. We were returning a piece of junk item that we purchased and did not have the receipt. The associate looked us up and found our transaction by name. She said she could refund the card that we used to make the purchase since she found it in the system. Then the associate next to her says that we could only receive store credit. When we asked her she said it depends on the supervisor. What??!!!! Why does it depend on the supervisor??? We've always shopped at City Mill instead of the big box stores since we love supporting local but it is just not a good option anymore. So disappointing! read more

Visited this City Mill to pick up a random window hardware replacement part. The staff were very helpful. Sometimes it's finding that balance at a hardware store - the delicate balance between being busily aloof vs. proactively approaching people to see if they need help. The staff knew exactly where everything was and helped to make sure I got everything I needed. Nothing worse than making 2 trips to the hardware store. As I walked around it was nice to see a good selection of other things I was interested in - tarps, canopies, toe down straps, and coolers. They've got some good prices for after Thanksgiving items. I appreciated that the parking was hassle-free and I could finish up shopping st Costco for my food items. Great location. read more

My partner & I could spend hours wandering every aisle in this store. It has the vibe of a mom & pop's shop where you get stopped by a friendly "aunty or uncle" asking if you need help with anything. This is a far different experience than stepping foot in a massive Home Depot where you can rarely find assistance or what you need right away. Living in Hawai'i Kai, this is the most convenient and friendly hardware store around. The only downfall I experienced was having bought some plants, they all seem to die. The $70 Kentia Palm was over fertilized & ended up dying on day 3. I buy my plants from a nearby nursery instead. read more

(Ace is still on Waialae ave. which is a good alternative before feeding the Big Box Machines). We are thankful for our neighborhood City Mill. Wow, so many people in the store, all wearing masks. Social distancing in the checkout line but throughout the store we all tried our best. I was looking for plumbing items, storage items and a new filled propane tank. Everyone was calm and informative and supportive. Very helpful and walked customers to the item. I use Google to research while I'm in the store but when I'm in need of help they are helpful. During a pandemic people can be rude but this day I saw the best in others. Mahalo plenty! read more

It's Christmas tree time so I ran over to City Mill to buy lights and a new tree stand. I was really disappointed in the selection of Christmas decor supplies at City Mill. I found twinkle lights of 100 but to my dismay they were $14.99 for a box. What?! Do these lights poop Christmas presents? I saw others for $4.99 but they didn't have any in white, only blue, red and purple. No thanks. I got the feeling that all their stock was left over from last year because it only filled a few shelves at the front of the store. One of the workers who helped me told me to go to Longs because it was a lot cheaper and I appreciate the fact that she just wanted to help. I asked her about a plastic Christmas tree stand that they sold for 8' and 10' tree sizes. She told me it was excellent because of the very large well which holds the water and that I should get the 10' size just in case I ended up wanting a larger tree. Sold! I won't be returning to City Mill for Christmas decor again as I think it's much better suited for when you're wanting to buy home improvement and organizing supplies. Wow! Customer Service is usually top notch here. Which is one of this City Mill's best qualities. Until today. I ask this older Asian worker to help me get the window screens that I had them make. I even waited 5 minutes pressing the call button at the pick up counter then went to look for him then waited for him to stop talking and shooting the breeze with a younger blond woman, just to have him tell me that's not his department and I need to go back to the counter and press call button. WTH.......walked over to the next isle and the next guy was happy to help me. Would've made a complaint but had to leave to get back to the job. So making my complaint here. What is City Mill? I didn't grow up in Hawaii and I had no idea what this place was. I would drive by the place and wonder in my head, but didn't really care. It turns out that this is a smaller, more local version of Home Depot. It tends to have less selection and higher prices. The workers there are actually quite friendly and will ask if we need help, but are in fact, very unhelpful. The 2 employees that tried to help me didn't know jack squat about the area they found me in. You'd think that experts in a certain area would be "mill"ing about in that area, not in a place where I know as much as they do. After talking to this guy for 5 useless minutes, wifey and I decided to go all the way to Home Depot instead. The one thing this place has going for it is the fact that there is no Home Depot around. That is what will keep me coming back here, reluctantly. read more

This is the literally the only hardware place in the general Hawaii Kai/Aina Haina area. So unless you want to drive to Kaimuki to go to Ace Hardware or into town to go to Home Depot you pretty much have to go to City Mill. Having said that, here are some pros and cons. Pros: * Conveniently located in Hawaii Kai so you DON'T have to drive into town to go to Home Depot or other places. * Generally has everything that you want or could use * Staff is generally helpful and friendly * Ample parking (in the same shopping center as Ross, Starbucks, and Costco) * Open very early for those that want to get a jump on weekend warrior activities * Nice, clean store Cons: * Can be a little more expensive than other places (supply and demand, I guess) so you have to weigh paying a little extra for the materials you need versus paying for gas to go somewhere else and get it a little cheaper. * It has almost everything that you need but sometimes doesn't have enough of them (I needed 15 knobs for cabinets and they had 9...so then you start asking yourself, do you buy the 9 and hope you can find identical knobs somewhere else, or do you hold off and go somewhere else to get all 15 in the same place). * Staff is helpful...when you can find them. They are sometimes hard to find, which is surprising since its not that big of a store. read more

ALL TIME FAVORITE!!! The guys in here treat me like family whenever I walk in. I was looking for supplies to build a surfboard rack and the staff was so helpful. I even got too many ratchets and bungees and they let me return it an hour later after I came back to the store. Best service I could have ever asked for. The Aunty at the counter is so nice too. My mom even went in a few days prior and had to get a bunch of potting soil. Not only did they give her a discount (one of the bags was ripped) but they also helped her carry all the bags to her car so that she didn't have to lift them!! So so so sweet. Usually stop in to fill propane tanks. Not anymore. Most of the time it's the same drill- tell them your name and number and come back 30 minutes later and they are ready. Not only were they NOT ready 45 minutes later, they did not even move from the spot I left them. Thank you City Mill. I just ask that you be 'on it' when your sign says 'Open'. You get 3 stars based on our history (which is now over). Customer service is ok here. If you ask for help they will help you. But it's just ok... There are other shops that will give way better service because they actually Care about your business. read more

Found myself here because I needed a small table. I was in the area, so decided to check out City Mill. They should have small tables, right? This location is in the same shopping area as Costco, but on the opposite side of the parking lot. There is a lot of stalls, but it can get crowded during lunch time. (There are a number of food places nearby.) We walked in & the door person nodded a greeting. Not really welcoming. I should've just left at that point. We perused the furniture area. I didn't find anything that was sturdy enough or just fit with what I needed. We weren't in a real rush, so we looked around at the various home items that City Mill offers. Brooms, shelving, canopy tents. It wasn't crowded, but it was busy. We picked up a pair of work gloves and a small rolling shelf. When it was our turn to pay, the cashier (I think her tag said Halana) did not greet us at all. Ii put my items on the counter. She scanned it & gave us the total. This was a very QUIET transaction. After we paid, she gave us our receipt. That was it. I had to grab my items off the counter. I know it doesn't sound hard, but she had pulled the items to her side to scan it. She didn't push them back. The gloves weren't too bad, but the rolling shelf was a bit awkward to move. When I finally had my items, another customer was blocking my way to the exit, so we turned to leave via the entrance (which was a few feet away). The cashier asked us to leave via the exit, but there was no way we could because of the other customer. So, you can tell us what door to use, but not thank us for our business? Yeah, sure. Needless to say, I will NOT be visiting this location again. If that is how you will be treating customers, I'll go throw my money to the other home Improvement businesses that at least can say thank you. 82 read more

I get such a disparity of customer service here. This last time I had two helpful, kind service people, they quickly moved out of my way so I could reach the product I was trying to buy, all smiles and jokes. Then it's over to the paint counter where I find out they don't sell paint samples except in the ten dollar quart size. He's not saying but trying to tell me they don't do samples. ( no I'm not kidding, they sell paint but not samples, no explanation why they don't offer this common and expected service. I ask if I can buy the quart and get four pint size samples but I'm told "no") AND I'm clearly and obviously inconveniencing him. He has other more important things to rush off to. So over to the counter to pay and "no you can't get any quarters in your change I'M low. No ten, I need MY ten." I know it's such a small thing but maybe that's why I get so taken aback by the casual rudeness I frequently encounter here. It's so 180 from normal customer service. If I can never go back their that would be awesome. So I'm back again to update. They've had new management in and the customer service has been great. It's really turned around. Yelp 100 Challenge #33/100 I'm happy that there is a City Mill in Hawaii Kai as it is the only home improvement store there and it is a locally owned business. Whenever I go into City Mill I get good service that I can rely on. They offer advice and let me know if a product is or isn't good, and if it will work or not. Recently I had to get some advice on getting some of the brush around my properly to stop growing, as they have thorns on the brush, and it's a pain to cut/trim it all the time. The salesperson was very helpful in asking other folks around for some help as they weren't sure how to take care of my problem. We finally found someone and we went through the aisles looking for a solution to get rid of the brush and have it stop growing. The salesperson took the time to explain how to use the product and what worked for them. I really appreciated all the time they spent and their kind concern in making sure I was a ok. Overall, I will keep going to City Mill in Hawaii Kai and support local. Thank you City Mill for helping me with my home improvement needs! Mahalo and Aloha! read more

I like this City Mill location! Good parking, not too crowded, and the employees are generally very helpful and friendly! I usually go here to buy organizer things, like plastic containers and boxes. I also bought a rug from here recently, and it was very reasonably priced! Asked to purchase a floor model of a product discounted 15% off original because the product was discontinued. The floor model was missing pieces and had a plastic part that was cracking from age. So I asked for an additional 10%. I was told no, and asked to speak to a manager. At that point the associate huffed loudly, and called over his manager. The manager didn't even make eye contact, just came over and said no. He said it was already discounted 15%, acting as if that was the open box discount and not because the product was discontinued. In the end, it was a classic example of how not to act in customer service. You at least say hi, you at least make eye contact, you at least say, I'm sorry that's as low as I can go. Both of these associates I dealt with made it very clear they were inconvenienced because I asked for an additional $2.70 for missing parts and because the display had clearly been there for years. I was in retail for 12 years, half of that as a manager and I would have happily taken any customer asking for only 10% off an old, visually worn display. I also would have been in a ton of trouble if I ignored such basic 'don'ts' when interacting with customers. I shop there when I have to because my father lives in the area and it's clear City Mill survives here because of its location, not because of its friendly, small store feel. Compared to Home Depot, prices aren't competitive and selection is small, in some areas, quite outdated. read more

I'll start by saying I've been going to this store for over 20 years. I've been highly critical of City Mill in the past due to the fact that they almost always were lacking one or more components I needed to complete a project, any project. It seems that this is beginning to change, not perfection mind you, just a step in the right direction. I was recently pleasantly surprised that they actually had the cartridge I needed for a repair to my shower. Keep up the good work and I'll shop here more often. went to city mill yesterday to buy 4 ft t8 tubes. they had led replacements and print said instant plug and play, but didn't know if my ballast would accommodate them and no one available to question on the floor. so asked the checkout lady how would i know if was ok in my fixture. her response "i'm not an electrician, so how would i know?" i knew my question was worded wrong, so i asked if i could return it if didn't work, and she said just bring it back in the box with your receipt. just then noticed a gentleman come in carrying an lpg gas tank and she turned to him and gave him a piece of paper and told him to fill it out. didn't know what he was doing so i asked her if they accepted returns of old tanks. her response was "we're not a dumping ground!" her tone of voice turned me off - she's NOT a very good representative of the company - regardless of other positive comments on service and friendliness of the staff. the "star rating" is on her - she did her job (rang up my sale), but that's all. read more

BUT when I locate the drawer it's in everything is almost gone - wow no inventory.
