I've been coming to CJs on Pico Blvd for years. The food is good. Although recently, like 2 months ago I went and had egg shells in my breakfast burrito. I mean all the years I've gone, never had that happen. So maybe it's a new cook or something. And it seems like they changed what tea or mix they are using for the Arnold Palmer, not a fan of the new stuff. And parking is still hard. But beyond that, it's still a good spot to eat. read more

I can't say enough good things about CJ's! The food is great, but the service is even better! We visited with our little 1 year old, and the waitress was the sweetest! The breakfast was excellent. The home fries potatoes was so good and tasty. The catfish was excellent and I wanted more than what was on my plate. The coffee was very good. The staff at the door greet you with a big smile our waitress she couldn't speak English, but the man that helped her, he was on point and he was excellent. The Avions was nice. IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW... CJ's is a long-time gem in MidCity, LA... The OG mom and pop shop. Been coming here with my family for as long as I can remember. The quality of food is a 10. (My fav are the chilaquiles. Boyyy when I tell you the only chilaquiles I eat are my mother's and CJ's...) The hospitality is a 10 to the 10th degree. Shoutout to waitress Luz. She is amazing. My 2 go to breakfast here are the Catfish with eggs and a side Of grits and the 3 wings and eggs with a side of grits. Let me tell you their wings are huge and so flavorful. They season their wing well. They cook your eggs the way you ask them to so you can't beat that. The catfish is fried to perfection, vey well seasoned. All you need it some hot sauce to top it off and you're good to go. I recommend this place. An honest, hurtful review by yours truly. This is the FIRST review I have ever made, which should be a testament to the trauma (half kidding) I experienced in eating from this restaurant. I never thought I'd make a review, but this place sent me into the sunken place of regret and has forced my hand. So do yourself a favor and AVOID this spot! Initially I saw the reviews were decent for this place, so I thought I'd give it a go! I was really in the mood for a nice breakfast spot and I wanted to try a new place. I got to looking around, ordered through Uber Eats and waited eagerly for my food to arrive. Right out the gate....Instantaneously... One look.... and I knew that I had been duped. The eye test failed as badly as you can when ordering a steak, eggs and grits dish. It looked a level under what I'd imagine someone in jail would be served, and it tasted even worse. - The STEAK was overcooked, chewy, lacked ANY flavor, and was nearly inedible. They give a side of steak sauce in hopes you will add it to forget about the mistake of a dish that is plated before you. But to pay 17.50 for a dish with steak as the star, and for it to be that awful is unacceptable. (Rating: -100/10) - The EGGS that came with it were average (can't really mess up scrambled eggs) but the grits.... (5/10) - THE GRITS! I flipped my plate upside down and they stayed glued to my trey. If I wanted those theatrics I'd go to Sonic and order a milkshake! It was one big blob of disgusting, zero flavor, trashcan grits. I took one bite and had to spit it out. I'm really not kidding when I say this. These were the worst grits I've ever had in my life. The grits are definitely not served fresh and probably lay there in a bulk container that they heat up the day of. (-1000/10) Clearly a ton of wrong I could rant about, but ONE positive were the pancakes I ordered on the side. They actually had a good, fluffy consistency to them, but not nearly enough to save the rancid meal I just ate. (7/10) Overall Plate (Steak and Eggs w/ Grits and a Side of Pancakes) - Flavor: 1/10 - Portion: 3/10 - Visual: -100/10 - Worth the Price: 0/10 - Will order again: -1000000000000000/10 Please head my warning. At the very least, do NOT get the steak, and do NOT GET THE GRITS!!!!!!!! That said, I will NEVER come back here. Good local diner. They have everything from American/southern food and Mexican. A lot of breakfast foods. Gets busy in the weekends. I think a lot of families come here after church on Sunday's. I had the cocido. It was good except the meat was too fatty for my taste and I found a hair in my soup. Hence the 3 start rating. I do come here often though and know stuff like that happens so was not too concerned with the hair. If you come here I recommend getting breakfast, southern style. Been a long time coming. Wait no further! My favorite dish to get here is there chilaquiles. I'm glad I finally have a spot to get my chilaquiles fix. The sauce is tasty and has the perfect amount of spice for me. The texture was soggy with a slight crunch. My mouth it getting watery just thinking about it. I poured their hot sauce to turn up the heat a bit- it was spicier and flavorful. So beware on the hot sauce. The eggs I order over medium and it was cooked to perfection. Beans and rice gave balance to the dish and I added chorizo for an additional charge. Which gave that extra flavor I wanted. Plus who doesn't like chorizo. Pairs well with the dish. I went on a Monday and service was fast. The waitress did her thang. Didn't bug us while we had food in our mouths lol. I personally prefer to be left alone while eating but no biggie. My sister introduced me to this place, and I will forever be grateful. Los Angeles is my hometown but I live in Houston, so every time I'm in town I'm stopping by CJ's for a bite to eat. As for the food, cheap and delicious. You will not be disappointed no matter which menu item you order. For this visit, I had my husband and a couple of our friends with me. Our friends are also from Houston. Well what do you know? They loved the food and the price. Yay! I picked a winner with CJ's! We had a variety of food...French toast, chicken and waffles, breakfast tacos and breakfast burrito. Everyone was very happy with their selection. The food was hot and fresh, the coffee was hot, the orange juice was cold, and we were all smiling from ear to ear. What more could you ask for? CJ's have a very small private parking lot behind the restaurant, but there's also street parking in the neighborhood. Pay attention to the signs because you cannot park on the street during certain days/times for street sweepers and trash pickup. Other than that, it's all good. My advice to you is that you check out CJ's immediately. I will always eat here when I'm in town visiting my family, which is every year...sometimes twice a year. So happy I finally came here! I live right down the street and have been meaning to come. They were open yesterday for 4th of July and I met up with some friends here for breakfast. I appreciate that they have early morning hours because we are morning people and up early. We were a large group with kids and a dog so we ate at one of the outside tables. Excellent service and great Mexican food. I loved my food! I should have taken a photo but I ate it too fast. I had the huevos rancheros and it came with rice, beans, chorizo, and tortillas on the side. Delicious! Very generous portions for a great price. My wife and I just ordered delivery from them. Two orders and 2 coffees. I ordered for myself plantains with beans and sour cream. Can anyone explain why there's melted cheese on my beans? I don't like melted cheese. This wasn't in the description. They just automatically added it. I wanted plains, beans, sour cream. There was no additional info saying the beans would have cheese. Not a big deal though. Second my wife ordered eggs with sausage rice and beans. Which we got, she also asked for a side of sour cream which she didn't get. No big deal. It happens. The chorizo with egg scramble was plain. Lacked taste. ************* The part below is what prompted me to review this business. And give them a one star. Had they been nicer about messing up the order I woulda just moved on with my day. I ordered two coffees as I previously mentioned. We didn't get any. The person who answered the phone had the audacity to say we should come pick it up if we want them. Listen, people order delivery for a reason. Doesn't take a high school graduate to figure this out. We cant drive over. We asked if they can deliver the coffee even though our food would be getting cold as we wait. They said there's nothing they can do as they are too busy with a full house. So, we have nothing to drink as we haven't done groceries because it's Saturday morning. Which was the whole reason for ordering delivery. We have water. That's all we have to drink. And last but not least, when we said to refund the coffees they didn't deliver the person who answered the phone said they don't know how to do it. Granted we ordered through Postmates, they should know what standard procedures are for when they make mistakes. In the end, what I get from this experience is- The staff needs better training. This is a neighborhood family diner that has been around for years. No frills and no gimmicks, you get a good selection of American, Soul Food and Mexican breakfast for your money so everybody in your party should be happy. Although their prices raised just a couple of dollars throughout the years, I still find their prices competitive for a solid meal. Plus the staff is always very friendly. Great spot. The food is tasty, and the staff is nice. They have a fresh juice menu, which was pretty neat for a diner. We were lucky enough to find metered parking right in front of the restaurant. It wasn't overly crowded when we walked in. There was one booth available, and an entire section of the restaurant had been roped off as "not yet open for seating." We had an infant with us and didn't want to bother the other patrons, so we asked to sit in the closed section. They made us sit in the one open booth in the center of the restaurant, and 5 minutes later, they opened that other section for seating ... Really?! Anyway, I had chorizo and eggs, which were pretty good. It seemed authentic, and there was a decent amount of chorizo. My carrot and orange juice was also very goo, though it had a lot of foam.
