Earlier this week, I tried a different ice cream shop in Claremont Village while Claremont Cones was closed, and unfortunately, the experience was pretty disappointing. I was all excited to come here until I looked into the ice cream freezer case and saw that it was mostly thrifty ice cream. Lots of mom and Pops sell thrifty ice cream now, pizza places, and stuff like that. They normally charge three dollars for a single scoop. This place was almost $5.00. BOMB!!! I visited the shop with my boyfriend on Sunday (7/11/21) for the first time and we shared a banana split. It was super yummy!! They have sooo many different flavors. I was so shocked by all of the different menu items they have. They have bubble waffles, waffles on a stick, açaí bowls, and more. I also love their wide selection of soy ice creams. The girls that work here are super sweet and very accommodating. My nephew dropped his ice cream as soon as he walked out, and they were kind enough to give us a replacement, free of charge. There's plenty of flavors to choose from. I had the butter toffee ice cream, which was delicious, my brother had the Maui waui sherbet flavor, which was also delicious, which reminded us of the POG drinks in hawaii, and my nephew had mint and chip. The ice cream is a little pricey for a single scoop, but indulging in ice cream outside of the house, once in a while with good service is always nice. I've driven past this place so many times and always tell my mom we should stop by, yet we never have. That changed today when we took a detour on the way to Whole Foods. Stepped into the place, and the lady behind the counter looked up and didn't even acknowledge us. I started getting a sense of why they are always empty every time I pass by. Fine, whatever, we said, and browsed through the ice cream selection, of which there was plenty to choose from. There were some interesting flavours like ube and green tea which was a plus. We settled on Sea Salt Caramel and Green Tea, and got a kids sized scoop of each. The caramel was good, but I was not a huge fan of the green tea. The serving size was huge, and was around $6, which was a huge shock as I'm used to paying a lot at the artisanal ice cream shops. Overall, it's a fine place as a last resort. If you're in Claremont this is probably the only option, but me personally? I'll continue driving out to LA's finest places for ice cream. When I returned to the area on a trip, I suggested meeting some people at the Baskin-Robbins, and one said, "Sure, but it's Claremont Cones now." None of us had been; none knew anything about it other than the name and that, well, it still had ice cream. We decided to meet there anyway, arrived an hour or so before closing, and came away highly impressed. They have an impressive array of flavors, including traditional tastes like chocolate and mint, and more exotic fare like acai, a burnt toffee ice cream, and an array of sorbets. The ice cream is delicious. My 13-year-old son says it's the best he's ever had, and his home town has a revered mom-and-pop of its own, so for him that's something. My party had three others in it, with diverse orders, and all of them loved what they picked. I adored both the mint and death by chocolate. The service was excellent. My wife had asked me to bring back a scoop of something for her, and after I read off the flavors, she picked one that appeared not to be in stock. They went into the back and scooped it out of a new container. Then the staff volunteered to put it in a freezer so the rest of us could eat without it melting, and so my wife loved her scoop of the unusual toffee flavor they retrieved for her. My youngest kid marveled at the plastic spoons, which change colors when in contact with cold.
