We were passing through Clayton on our way to Greenville and decided to stop in this cute little town for lunch. Clayton cafe was one of the first places we saw and we randomly decided to make this our lunch place. Immediately when we walked in we could tell this was a good call. I've always felt like Monday isn't much of an eating out day, but this place was packed which is always a good sign! We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table but that wasn't so bad considering the amount of people there. I will say when we sat down it took a long time before a server ever acknowledged us. We tried to overlook this because it was obvious they were short staffed, and when she finally did come our waitress was very friendly and attentive! We ordered the chicken tender lunch platter (comes with two sides and a drink) and the pot roast lunch platter, which was the special of the day. They were both absolutely delicious if a little too much food. We had been eyeing the yummy looking blueberry pie for dessert but we ended up being too full to try it out. Not only is this spot a great restaurant, but it also includes a really cute coffee shop with numerous pastry options as well as a little market with cute gifts. Since it was a Tuesday a lot of places to eat we're closed except The Clayton Cafe. The food was very good. Burgers were excellent as were the onion rings. When you walk in the front door, the place as two different seating areas. One side is the coffee and dessert side and the other side is the restaurant side. We will be back. read more

Decor was so cute and very a la small town Main Street. Bathrooms were clean which means the kitchen was most likely clean. Loved that the restaurant was attached to another little take out shop, a bakery and also a wine shop. Well curated. The restaurant- the wait time was not accurate the hostess stand gave me a 20 min wait estimate and it ended up being 45 minutes, not cool plus when we sat down and ordered it took about an hour to get our food. The kitchen was not organized because there were people who sat down after us that received their food about 30 min before us. I had a child with me so that wait time was really unfortunate. 18 months. I have had a home here for 18 months and have never gone to the Clayton Cafe. Then we hear it may be gone forever! But luckily it has a rebirth and I now have an urge to get here as soon as I can. Now I am mad at myself for missing this for 18 months. Lunch was lovely. My country fried steak sandwich was so yummy and light-hard to do with CFS. My son loved his grilled cheese so he was happy. Adorable dining room. Great service. Another great lunch at Clayton Cafe. This popular restaurant keeps everything moving smoothly with their "text you when your table is ready" system. Our lunches were the fried chicken and chicken tenders. Chicken was fantastic. Vidalia and hashbrown casseroles were great. I heard a fellow patron asking how the vidalia casserole was made. I've been coming to Clayton for years and cannot believe I haven't eaten here sooner. We called in an order for pick up, 2 caprese chicken sandwiches and a pimento cheese sandwich with friend okra and sweet potato fries. When I came to pickup it wasn't quite ready yet so I obviously went to browse the adorable shop! After talking myself out of buying all the local preserves, I settled for a couple fresh slices of strawberry cake to go with our dinner! Wow! Popped in for lunch today and I'm so happy we did! First of all what a great staff they have. So attentive and checking on us often. My glass never sat empty! We had grilled lemon pepper halibut with seasonal crowder peas and tasty cabbage casserole. My husband had blackened halibut with fries and a salad. Everything was so good! Well a little disappointed and after seeing the menu we should have looked on. We came to Clayton for a few days to relax so after seeing many great reviews of the Clayton Cafe we knew we had a winner. The pictures showed a great place to get some good home cooked meals and it appears that on a weekend it's anything but a great selection of home cooking. I say that because we were greeted with a brunch menu of your typical Atlanta restaurant. But we were there and ok let's eat and yes it was a typical mid level restaurant's Sunday brunch. The Clayton Cafe was established in 1931 and was widely known for great Southern country cooking. It has remodeled, changed hands and the menu has totally changed and not for the better. No more of the dishes they were famous for, though the old, established menu is still posted on the web site. The gift shop and fabulous bakery with great sweets and take home dishes is no longer there. Very, very disappointed to get there and find out after traveling for hours to eat there and find this change and the locals are all complaining too. read more

We went for lunch on the soft opening after they remodeled the restaurant and menu. So disappointed; the baker/confection shop is gone along with the quaint bustling small town cafe ambiance that brought us back everytime we were downtown. Just the same as the other places on the same street now. They had pretty tall white vases with fresh flowers on each table. Unfortunately, they stood 12-18 inches tall. Every table had moved their vase to the side or to an empty table. My husband had the fried catfish fingers, which were "meh" ... and he hated the jalapeño coleslaw. I had bowl of Brunswick stew, that was room temp and only had meat and corn in it.The broth was underdeveloped. I think it was not done or ready to be served. I love to visit Clayton GA and every time I do, a meal at Clayton Cafe and a visit to their Market is a must! The food is everything you want it to be and more. If you had a Southern grandmother like I did, you will finish a meal happily nostalgic and full! The service staff are extremely hospitable and patient with diners like myself who just can't decide how many of the daily veggies and casseroles to get! Well this is probably the most happening spot in the small town of Clayton Georgia and I can see why! It's such a cute, local place and has something for whatever you're looking for.. They have a grab and go area with sandwiches, sides, etc. It seems to be a legit place for coffee and pastries. They also have a very small bar with draft beer and a big screen tv. Then they have a small market area with local gifts and things. If you want to sit down and have a meal this is an option too but there are limited tables so you might have to wait. The menu is small but definitely good, southern home-cooking. You can get your typical plated meal and choose from a bunch of sides, even more on their daily specials. I got the Southern BLT made with fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese; it was awesome. And the prices are reasonable! If you're visiting the area definitely stop in. read more

Wonderful surprise for lunch at this downtown cafe where it's hard to pick a favorite. The fried green tomato BLT was perfect on grilled toast, with just slightly warmed pimento cheese and tasty thick bacon. I chose the grits casserole as a side, bringing on more cheese and bacon goodness with spinach. John had a Rueben panini and raved about the corned beef and his side of potato salad. It's hard to decide what to order off the new Southern menu, and then they tell you about the specials of the day to totally leave you in a conundrum.
