Clementina is an amazing choice for folks with dietary restrictions, especially gluten intolerances! I came here for lunch with a couple of friends on a weekday, and it was not busy at all. I did make a reservation, and we got seated immediately, but there were still plenty of tables. Heads up, this spot does not allow outside food to be brought in at all. My friend was carrying a gluten-free lemon loaf from a bakery she had purchased nearby, and we were asked to dispose of it or eat it so that there would be no traces of gluten or cross-contamination. While ordering, we were struck by decision paralysis! There are a lot of options to choose from. We ended up selecting the below: *Focaccia sampler: The bread was chewy and airy. You could not tell it was gluten free. A critique we do have is that even though it was listed as a sampler, we had no idea what variations were on the plate. We wished there were signs or that we got an explanation from the server. All the breads ended up tasting very similar. When we did request a walkthrough, the person delivering to us was also unsure about the items we got. *Eggplant fritters: We thought it was going to be flat and crispy, but it was closer to an arancini ball. There was a nice crispy exterior, and inside the eggplant was nice and creamy. *Panzanella salad with added cheese: Even though it was delicious, we wished there was more peach on the plate to balance everything out. We did add cheese for an extra cost and wondered if the dish would have still been enjoyable without it. That being said, I understand it may be to accommodate folks with lactose intolerance. *Gnocchi with lamb ragu: The gnocchi was nice and pillowy and the lamb was seasoned well with no gamey aftertaste. I wish the tomato sauce base they used was a bit thicker. Overall, our experience here was good. It seems like a very casual Italian spot, similar to Pasta Supply if you have been there. I actually was excited when I saw gluten free menu but unfortunately this food was a super big let down to both my friend and I. We agreed in the love for the vibes / decor as well as the service, so giving it 2 extra stars for that. Reminded me of a professors study with great attention to detail & a lovely wine display. The ambiance was warm and charming! The food we ordered was off, one was taken back to kitchen...tasted like undeveloped sauce that needed more seasoning, it was slimy & bad. The dish that came to replace, im sorry to say was worse but didn't have the heart to say anything. Terrible risotto, it came with no veg, no herbs, no depth of seasoning nor cheese for the top. It seemed seasoned with some saffron alone but tasted like soapy dish water and was inedible my friend said all the food we took togo was worse the next day. Everything else we ordered was edible but we didn't like either. It was the texture and flavors that were lacking. no acid balance in any of the dishes really. I wanted to love this place so much. My partner has celiac, so he was very excited to try an Italian restaurant that could work for him. Reservations were made, we arrived, we ordered, and we were left impressed with some of the dishes, but disappointed by others. We each had a pizza, and they were good enough, but not necessarily any different than other gluten free pizzas. I felt like mine lacked pizza sauce. His had dollops of cheese, but he had to mix it together (which isn't what pizza usually is). He did love the eggplant fritters and the focaccia. I think the hype - adoring press, lots of social media enthusiasm - had us expecting something a bit higher end than a mid-range Italian place. First time at clementina and was super excited as someone with celiac being able to go to a restaurant and not be concerned about getting glutened is an amazing experience. Food was fantastic and so glad we got to try lots of different things. Hands down top two favorite dishes were the mussels and the pizza. Everything tasted super fresh and the server coursed out of meal for us perfectly. Only rating four stars due to the fact that they were out of the focaccia bread and a few other items. Which was a huge disappointment seeing as they specialize in gluten-free dining experience it seemed frustrating that they didn't have the gluten free bread that I know all people with celiac would love to try, being that it is incredibly hard to get good tasting gluten free bread. Other downside is that you can't specify if you would like to sit indoor or outdoor. it's a take what you can get situation even with a reservation like I had tonight (booked like 2 weeks in advance). The main reason we decided to try this restaurant was because I still had a gift card from the previous restaurant, and the owner was kind enough to honor it. I'm glad we gave it a try because we really enjoyed our experience. The pinsa is just as good as the one at Montesacro since it is owned by the same proprietor, and it is one of my favorite styles of pinsa. We tried also the fried fish as the appetizer, but the standout dish was the cotoletta my husband ordered. Not only was it impressively large, but it was also absolutely delicious. My daughter enjoyed the pesto gnocchi. Overall, we had a very positive dining experience and would gladly return. read more

First off, I didn't know this was a gluten-free Italian restaurant until we showed up. That said we had a fairly good meal. Really enjoyed our server Maria. The frito misto and cauliflower appetizers were the standouts for me. I had the Tonnato Panini. For gluten-free focaccia, it was pretty good, although it was way too thick in this application of a sandwich. My wife had the panzanella. I've run into this before restaurants where I don't believe it's a authentic bread salad. In that the bread, which is supposed to be stale, is soaked in water first to soften it. It may be a mouthfeel thing that Americans aren't used to. Instead in this version, it's basically just large croutons. It could be that, since all the bread is gluten-free, it just wouldn't stand up to that kind of preparation. Maybe the restaurant can reply to me and correct me if they think I am wrong but that's how I learned to make it. I'd like to go back at dinner when there is more meat options. We had an 8pm dinner and the restaurant itself was dark/dim lighting and very cute. The decor and theme was adorable. Once we got seated, the service was great and the staff was very attentive. The focaccia tasted SO good and was very bouncy. However it was cold. The salted butter helped! Eggplant fritters were warm and tasty! Very crunchy and honestly the flavor was perfect. 3 of us ordered the Guilia pizza and I wish we got a variety. I felt the flavors were a bit strange. I dined here for a friend's birthday dinner recently. She has celiac, and had previously tried and loved the restaurant. We had an amazing time eating here and I was very impressed by the food. There are a lot of dietary restrictions in the group I was with (vegan, vegetarian, etc.) aside from gf, and this was probably the least stressful dining experience I've had. There was something for everyone. I eat a lot of Italian food and was honestly skeptical going in, but I was impressed across the board. The pizza was creative and delicious, and aside from the focaccia (noticeably fluffier than the traditional version, though still quite good), I wouldn't have known this was an entirely gluten-free kitchen. We had a flourless chocolate cake for dessert (not pictured) that was one of the better desserts I've had recently. Mother's Day and Mom is gluten free. Everyone was delighted with Clemintina. It's authentic Italian and everything is fully gluten free. We started with beverages. Mom had a Mimosa and two of us had Chinotto, like an Italian version of Coca Cola. I always seek that out and it's a sign of authentic Italian food. We had three appetizers between us; asparagus with cheese, focaccia and fried smelts, which were excellent. Focaccia was a bit springy, which you expect for gf. Next up, we had a pizza, the branzino and costoletta all Milanese (pounded pork chop like a schnitzel), which is highly recommended and outstanding. Chef made it for us even though it wasn't on the lunch menu. We left stuffed and sated. Everything on the menu is gluten free, but the food is comparable to what you would get in Italy. It's a bit tricky to review because gluten free dishes that try to replicate traditional versions can be hit or miss, and with that in mind, I think they did a decent job. The ambiance was nice, and our server was warm and attentive, which made the experience feel welcoming from the start. What didn't quite work for me was the flavor balance. Some of the pairings felt off, like certain pasta shapes matched with sauces that didn't really complement them, and at times it felt like the flavors were pushed a bit too strongly. I'm not GF but was curious to try this new spot. I think they are still working out some kinks in the kitchen. The apps were overly salty (green salad and the cauliflower). The salad was overly dressed/salted and the cauliflower had both olives and capers in it which is major overkill on salt. The pastas were solid, the pesto rigatoni and the gnocchi with meat sauce had good flavor and texture. The rigatoni in particular I couldn't really tell was GF. The gnocchi was more dense than regular gnocchi but still good. The interior is well-done but certain tables are nicer than others. We dropped by on Father's Day and they had a preset menu that you can choose two appetizers from, a main dish, and a dessert. There were 4 choices of appetizers so we tried all of them and they were all excellent. I've been gluten free for years now, so I was excited to try their lasagna and it was absolutely delicious! We started off with a peach and heirloom tomato appetizer, followed with the pulpo and patata, which was accompanied by the lightest with savory herb seasoning. For entrees we enjoyed the pescato (whole branzino with baby carrots that was moist, delicately but exquisitely seasoned) and what really rocked my world was the LASAGNA. Tomato-based with some creamy elements, pasta al dente that I sunk teeth into, cheesy, gooey goodness-- this was the best lasagna I've had in decades. We topped it off with tiramisu--heaven for a gluten free person. And did I say the portions were generous? We brought home so many leftovers! Took my partner to Clementina for a GF birthday dinner on a Friday night (should be the A-team in the kitchen, right?). Sadly, we were both deeply disappointed with the food. We ordered two appetizers, one pizza, and a main protein. What went wrong? The cauliflower antipasti had almost zero cauliflower instead it was a small mound of mostly capers and kalamata olives, the pizza was missing artichokes and flavor, the pork chop cutlet with the side of raw arugula was equally underwhelming. One of the best gluten free dining experiences I've ever had. I have been gluten free for almost 5 years now and this was hands down the best focaccia bread (actually just the best bread point blank) I've had since! It was warm and fluffy and bouncy! Two were regularly flavored and two were tomato I think, they were pink and adorable. Our server Julia was phenomenal and gave us a perfect wine recommendation. We got the FRITTURA DI PESCETTI (fried smelts) the PUTTANESCA DI CALAMARI (pasta puttanesca) and the GIULIA pizza ( we substituted the lamb for pork sausage due to an allergy). The host is warm, relaxed, and genuinely friendly....exactly what you hope for from a true neighborhood spot without any attitude or pretentiousness. Super knowledgeable about both the wine list and the menu and the kind of person who makes the whole experience feel effortless. At this point I have tried most of the appetizers along with the branzino and the gnocchi. Every single dish has been packed with flavor and perfectly prepared. My friends and I ventured from Oakland to S.F. to try clementina. I'm gluten free (my friends are not) and was sooo excited when I heard clementina was opening. I want to say that our service was great and everyone was friendly. We did have to reduce our reservation from five people to three and we ended up being sat at stools by the window. Wasn't the best but we made due. On to the food. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the lack of flavor and seasoning. The two standouts were the focaccia (so soft!) and the lamb pizza. The pizza was delicious, the lamb cooked perfectly. The crust, very good. However, I have to say that Lucia's in Berkeley is still the best gluten free pizza. Unfortunately, the squid ragu was flavorless and could have at least used some salt. I would never get this dish again. The asparagus with mozzarella was okay, but the huge plop of burrata made it hard to eat the dish. Perhaps consider smaller amounts of burrata on top of the asparagus. The dish itself was lackluster. Overall, I won't make an effort to come back to clementina, it's too expensive for dishes that are underwhelming. Either Clementina has taken the feedback or a lot of the previous reviews were one off growing pain issues. I'd say I have a pretty high bar for restaurants, particularly Italian food, and I had a wonderful meal here. My brother (not gluten free) also agreed that everything was fantastic. Service - stellar, Julia was incredible and gave some great recommendations. Food - focaccia medley was great, very fluffy and moist for a GF bread. - mussels with Gorgonzola, tasty, crispy, creamy. Focaccia was perfect for dipping in the remaining sauce - gnocchi with lamb ragu, did not have the same experience as others here. Sauce was rich, flavorful, and not overly sweet as others indicated here. Gnocchi was top notch (I'd say better than Bella Trattoria for those GF folks comparing) - artichoke, potato, and lamb sausage pizza. This was a standout. Among the best GF pizza crusts I've had in the US. Sausage was tasty, and the whole pie had a nice spice to it. Really delicious. - tiramisu was very good, not overly sweet, and the cake base had great texture. One nit would be the chocolate chips throughout. Overall not the textural contrast I'm looking for in a tiramisu, but that could be a personal preference and I could see others liking that. Ambiance - gorgeous space, great lighting, lively but not too loud. Would recommend, and definitely a place all would enjoy, not just gluten free folks. SF is really short on "destination" restaurants with gluten free options, and overall I've been disappointed with the gluten free scene in SF. Myself and friends came by for an after dinner drink bringing some leftovers from Pasta Supply. The staff asked us not to have the Pasta Supply bags on the bar or even on the floor near us. The staff took our food and put the two large bags we brought off in a corner on some bench. When we left, we said good night to the staff and nobody reminded us of our leftovers and we forgot ourselves. It's unfortunate but also negligent or worse. There's no official law about food containers in SF I've ever encountered and the staff noticed and admired the food from Pasta Supply. So i have some friends that have Celiac. It is a tough thing. What they usually say they miss the most? Italian. Pasta, Bread Pizza,,,all the things I take for granted. Now there's an amazing Italian restaurant that happens to be gluten free! now their other places have the options but not the totality of Clementina. Some of the diners here didnt even know that was the case. Its lkind of how I find some vegetarian cuisines like many regional indian ones, dont have to say theyre vegetarian, they just are and you dont find yourself missing the meat, Our stomachs where not able to take on the whole menu we just need to come back. But the beets/blackberry, vitello tonato, risototo Milanese and the cotoletto were all amazing. We like their other restaurants so we kind of knew we would enjoy it and we sure did. My partner has celiac disease and a dairy intolerance, so we were genuinely excited to try a place that seemed like it could accommodate dietary restrictions. Instead, we left extremely disappointed--and honestly shocked at how underwhelming and overpriced the food was. Across the board, the dishes lacked flavor, balance, and basic execution. Several items even had an off-putting fishy smell, which made them hard to eat, let alone enjoy. We rarely leave meals unfinished, but this was one of those times where we simply couldn't continue eating. GNOCCHI AL RAGÙ DI AGNELLO - The gnocchi itself was fine, but the lamb ragu sauce was a bit too sweet for the gamey-ness from the lamb. I expected this to be savory dish and it came out almost sweet. 5/10 RISOTTO CROCCANTE E MIDOLLO (vp) - The bone marrow tasted genuinely off, borderline spoiled, which is unacceptable. The risotto itself had no real flavor to redeem it. 0/10 MARGHERITA (no cheese) - We understand removing cheese changes a dish, but this was still disappointing. The crust was decent, but everything else lacked seasoning or character. Oddly, the olives were the most flavorful part. 5/10 VITELLO TONNATO - Extremely underwhelming and especially frustrating given the price. Took my partner to dinner here for his birthday. Everything we got was delicious! We shared the foccacia (with yummy butter), rigatoni pesto, the Alice pizza (made with quinoa flour crust!) and flourless chocolate cake. We arrived at 6:00 for our 6:30 reservation just to check that they had us on their list, but they had an open table and seated us early. So appreciated. I really wanted to love this place but it didn't WOW me, I am very glad it's 100% gluten free and as someone with celiac disease this was a must try. I ordered the lasagna al pesto, which waiter explained was not layered lasagna (totally fine) unfortunately it came out on the colder side and some of the pasta was overcooked/burned which is why I'm giving it 4 stars. They brought it out at the same time as the costelleta alla milanesa (pork chop) which was good also. The bread was very fluffy and delicious that was probably my favorite thing..cute environment, they had a movie playing on the projector as well. My kids have celiac disease so finding a restaurant that is 100% gluten free seemed amazing. We decided to try it for Father's Day. We were woefully disappointed The restaurant itself is super cute . Nice ambiance, cute decor. Staff is friendly and attentive. Everything about that service was superior. Water glasses never empty. Empty plates never lingered. Server was always making sure we had what we wanted. I'd go back for the service but not the food Father's Day only offered a prix fix menu which looked amazing and for kids who can never eat lasagna or gnocchi in a restaurant, tbis menu seemed like a dream come true. Sadly the food failed. Meatballs. The sauce was super sweet and tasted like someone poured way too much sugar in the marinara. The meatball itself was nothing special and actually kind of small Fried squash blossoms. Where's the squash? It was mostly fried batter that was so overcooked I thought I was eating a potato chip. Buratta. Best starter they offered but nothing special about it. It would have been lovely with a crisp or fresh peaches. Lasagna. Suffered from the same fatal flaw as the meatballs. That sweet sauce. It overpowered any flavor or spice from the sausage and the lasagna was very greasy like the noodles were cooked in butter Gnocchi. The sauce was too rich and had way too many mushrooms. Ribeye. Cooked to perfection but the veggies on the side were soggy and we couldn't eat them. Broccolini would have been better. Tiramisu was dry. The food was so rich and we couldn't eat taste all the butter and oil and sugars used that we all had stomach aches after. We felt sick for the rest of the night. So sad because we loved the venue and staff but the food failed to meet the mark esp for the price we paid and expectation that since it was all gluten free we would not be sick after. read more

Just finishing up our meal at Clementina for their opening night. Superb! Standouts were the pizza, lasagne (the béchamel was incredible), and their meringue dessert. The owner and staff are super pleasant and up beat, service was excellent and the vibe in side is very tasteful. It almost threw me off that nothing is labeled gluten free but indeed EVERYTHING is gluten free. They have focaccia! So glad to have a new spot to eat at. First and foremost I really appreciate that Clementina took on the challenge of a gluten-free Italian restaurant. That being said, on our second visit to the restaurant, we were disappointed to see that the restaurant is now using (or disclosing) deglutenized wheat flour for their focaccia and breadcrumbs (on the menu, also not on the website). Having a wheat allergy makes a portion of the menu now inaccessible, including the gorgeous pork cutlet. While I fully appreciate and recognize that gluten-free & wheat-free are separate needs, the overlap of celiac/wheat-allergy/ncgs is high enough that I can't help but question the choice to introduce the ingredient into the kitchen. I'll most likely be back, but will need to consider if there are menu items that I can have before making a reservation. read more

First time trying Clementina and I'm obsessed. I've been gluten free for a few years now and it's such a treat to be in a restaurant where I can eat everything so freely. The focccocia was light and fluffy- the butter it came with was delicious as well. We loved the fried smelt and the lamb ragu pasta, and the tiramisu tasted as good as I remember from my gluten eating days! Our server, Carolina was great at describing the dishes and helped us pick a perfect wine for the meal; 10/10 service. Excited to be back for more gluten free date nights! read more

This gluten free restaurant is a refreshing change of pace. The decor is welcoming and fits the food. The staff greeted us and sat us before our reservation, which was nice. Our servers Kiara and Brenna were very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. The menu was not as expansive as I expected, but it was the lunch menu and I think dinner had more items. We ordered the gnocchi which was DELICIOUS! The texture was really pleasing and the meat sauce was tasty. The tagliatelle sauce was a bit bland, but we enjoyed the texture of the noodles. The margherita pizza had a nice crust but didn't have the bold sauce and mozzarella flavor I'm used to. Focaccia was soft and fragrant. Finished off with gelato- pistachio was too tier.
