CARBONARA SBAGLIATA and MACCARUNE CA VODKA

Went to Bella Trattoria for a date night dinner and overall had a really great experience ! The ambiance is small and intimate, which made it perfect for a date night. It's quiet but still has a lively energy to it, and the dim lighting gives it that cozy Italian dinner feel :) Definitely a spot you can sit, talk, and enjoy your time. Service throughout the night was solid. Food came out hot, fresh, and everything felt well paced. Polpette della Casa Really good start. The meatballs were tender and flavorful, and the tomato cream sugo paired really well with the eggplant and zucchini caponata. Carbonara Sbagliata Super rich and creamy with a good amount of pancetta. The pecorino and black pepper really come through, and the pasta itself was cooked perfectly. Maccarune Ca Vodka (added sausage) Another solid dish. The sauce was smooth and flavorful, and the sausage added a nice depth and heartiness to it. Toward the end of my pasta, I did find something in my food, but after letting the staff know, they handled it really well. They were apologetic right away, and the head chef/owner came out personally to apologize, which I appreciated. They ended up taking my entrée off the bill, gave us another entrée to take home, and also brought out a tiramisu on the house. Tiramisu Honestly one of the best I've had, OAT. Light, creamy, and perfectly balanced without being too sweet. Overall Mistakes can happen anywhere, but what stood out was how they handled it. The level of care and service really made the difference. Because of that, I would definitely come back. Thank you for the amazing night again!

    Squid ink gnocchi

Wanted to try a cozy comfy Italian restaurant that wasn't from my usual go to! Ambiance / decor was a mixed bag of Hispanic, Italian, rustic, old diner American esque / modern vibes with dim lighting and a lowkey hidden entrance. Hosts were kind but the waiter was very pushing on trying to have us do the dinner special which isn't a bad value (but pink elephant has a better happy hour dinner deal...) kind of was strange like it was a marketing scheme. Food overall was delicious, not pictured was a pizza we got which basically tasted like a sour charcuterie bread with no cheese which was the only let down. Squid ink gnocchi: Star of the show that was full of seafood goodness in each bite with a creamy sauce and yummy chunks of potatoy garlic goodness. For its price point I wish the gnocchi was rolled out to be bigger; the portion felt like an appetizer but luckily the freebies made up for it. Freebies: Panna cotta Glad this was included it was light and fleshing with the electric tartness from the raspberries. The Panna cotta was beautifully gelatinous. Bread with tomato paste(+ olive oil?) strange combo; wish it was balsamic because the tomato was not evident but the bread was delicious and bouncy!

Bella Trattoria -- Solid carb-load spot in SF First time in California--and San Francisco--as an adult. We booked a same-day reservation for a group of five at Bella Trattoria the night before my half marathon (Bay Breeze Half Marathon), specifically to carb-load. Because it was the day before Valentine's Day, the menu was prix fixe only--2 or 4 courses, no à la carte. I went with the 2-course option ($45), fully vegetarian: Antipasto Tricolore -- arugula, mixed greens, chopped artichokes, olives, balsamic. Fresh, simple, and did the job. Entrée Spaghetti all'Arrabbiata -- fresh spaghetti, San Marzano D.O.P. tomato sugo, garlic, onions, shallots, Calabrian chili peppers. This was the standout. I was slightly worried it'd be bland (bad pre-race pasta experiences in the past), but this had real depth and heat. Bright tomato flavor, noticeable spice, and well-seasoned throughout. Not a "blow-your-mind" dish, but very solid and exactly what I wanted before a race. For the table, we also had complimentary garlic bread, polenta di Bella with mushrooms, and a smoked salmon pasta. The bread with tomato sauce was especially good--slightly sweet, rich, and felt authentically Italian. Dessert Chocolate pistachio gelato (excellent), and they kindly threw in a panna cotta with berries on the house. I mostly stuck to the gelato since I had a race the next morning--no need to gamble with GI issues. Verdict: Good food, generous service, and impressive that we snagged a late, same-day reservation. Bonus point: I placed 3rd overall and 3rd male the next day--so yes, I'm giving the pasta partial credit. A dependable Italian spot in the heart of SF. Would return if I'm back in the area.

They usually get busy, so we made reservations and were seated quickly. We were placed in the front room where a DJ was playing music, and combined with conversations, it became somewhat noisy. After talking with others, it sounds like the back room is much quieter. For food, we started with the Cavoletti and Bruschetta. The Brussels sprouts were tasty, but the bruschetta was just okay. For our mains we had the Ravioli di Piselli, which was flavorful, the Fruitti di Mare with plenty of seafood, and the Arribbiata, which had a very small portion. Although the restaurant was extremely busy, our waiter kept us informed about what was happening with our food, which we appreciated.

    Gnocchi Di Spinaci Con Gorgonzola

I came here on a Saturday night and made reservations, but it wasn't busy. The restaurant itself is very cute and would be a good vibe for a date. We got the Gorgonzola gnocchi and the It's not Carbonara. The gnocchi was very soft and melts in your mouth, I would definitely recommend it. The carbonara was just okay. Overall I'd come back.

A raspberry dessert from their three-course menu.

A nice neighborhood Italian restaurant, with a large menu that will delight any level of appetite and tastes. They make everything fresh here and the restaurant is quite beautiful inside. It is definitely cozy because it's a smaller space, but the ambiance is nice. It was very dark inside and at your table though. Our group had a hard time reading their menu, I had to honestly magnify the menu on my phone to see it better, but even then, it was barely visible and had my friend look at it for me. I chose the "It's Not Carbonara," which was fettuccine, butternut squash, and pecarino bits. It was a nice vegan option and I am a fan of butternut squash. It was rich as expected and pretty tasty. My group got their three-course meal, which came with a choice of dessert. We shared a raspberry tart flan-like dessert, which was also good. Our server was very attentive and gave good table service. Water service was also good. Street parking only, but parking can be close or you may have to park a few blocks away. Recommend taking the 38 bus and walk less than a block to get to the restaurant.

Went later in the night since they close at 10pm. Nice ambiance with dim lighting. Service was pretty good. Appetizers: I thought the complimentary bread felt nice and soft, but the gf felt it was old and cold compared to hot & buttery bread served at other restaurants. Next, the Bruschetta ca' pummarola tasted the best out of all the orders. Main: We went with the three course prix fixe meal: 1. Swordfish Carpaccio Antipasti tasted... interesting; like salty dried fish, maybe not our taste? 2. When the Squid Ink Fettuccine and Salmon Fettuccini came with "a lot of plate", the portion initially looked small, but there was actually a good amount of pasta there. But flavor for both was lacking and quite salty; we could not finish it due to the sodium. 3. Panna cotta - it was okay. Overall 3/5 for the food. I bookmarked this place awhile back and was glad to try it, but will likely not return.

EGGPLANT PARMIGANA Baked with Asiago & Mozzarella, Served on a bed of San Marzano Sugo
    Priscilla L.

My husband and I really love the food at Bella Trattoria so much so that we've gone for both their Thanksgiving menu and their Christmas Eve menu. It has that "special occasion" feel without being overly stiff: dim, cozy, intimate, and very Inner Richmond. Food-wise, they absolutely showed up. I started with the Rucola e Acchiughe (burrata with white anchovies, lemon-infused olive oil, and arugula). It was bright, salty, creamy, and perfectly balanced--one of those dishes where every bite tastes like it belongs together. George ordered the Polpette della Casa, and this was comfort food done right: tender beef-and-pork meatballs in a rich tomato sugo, with chopped eggplant and zucchini mixed in for extra depth. It felt hearty and homemade in the best way. For mains, my Osso Buco was fantastic: deep, slow-cooked flavor, wonderfully rich sauce, and the housemade fettuccine soaking up every bit of that braised goodness. George's Eggplant Parmigiana was excellent too: grilled eggplant layered with asiago and mozzarella, baked until melty and bubbly, then served over a vibrant San Marzano sugo. Honestly, everything tasted like it had real care behind it. Portions were generous. We had enough leftovers to eat happily for two more days. That said... the service was rough, especially on Christmas Eve. The restaurant wasn't busy and it wasn't understaffed. The most memorable (and frustrating) moment was waiting 15 minutes just to get milk for our coffee. Coffee is $9 a mug. Delays like that add up, and George was genuinely upset. He has been in the food industry all his life and he felt like the slow, inattentive pacing put a damper on what was supposed to be a festive night. Bella Trattoria can serve a truly delicious meal, and the kitchen clearly knows what it's doing, especially for holiday menus. But the front-of-house experience can be inconsistent, and on a day like Christmas Eve, that matters. I'll still come back for the food (because it really is that good), but I'd go in with patience and slightly lowered expectations on service. George says he'll never dine in there again because of the service, but might consider ordering food from them and picking it up.

Lovely experience at this place. Seated quickly and brought us water and bread. The server was so attentive yet gave us space. Me and my friend both ordered salads and main dishes. We enjoyed the salad and drink so much we took our main course to go. The waiter boxed our food nicely and brought us a yummy dessert. Was a great experience, will definitely return.

    Pretty darkwood decor
    Rich S.

Around 2:30pm, on a Thursday near the end of lunch, we stopped in at Bella Trattoria, an intimate restaurant and bar with darkwood subdued decor. We had strong espresso and coffee, and $8 panna cotta, a dense custard of slowly-cooked cream, sweet thick strawberry compote jam, with a lightly tart lightly balsamic glaze. They have a rich creative menu and an exciting range of spirits. Alas, we were just passing through.

Went on a Friday night, second time going here. Lots of food options and gluten free pizza crust and pasta, also gluten free bread. Nice service and they had a dj playing some great groovy songs. Will come back again! Make sure to ask if they have specials. Their artichoke appetizer is incredible

A group of friends and I came here on my birthday weekend. We made a same day reservation and were seated upon arrival. The restaurant is in the heart of the Richmond district and is pretty sizable. There is a pretty authentic Italian feel to this spot. The workers were very friendly, talkative, and warm. Service was decently quick too. I wanted the frutti di mare but it wasn't on the menu at the time. Our waiter was still able to ask the kitchen to make it for me though which was great! It was delicious, and the seafood portion was generous. Since it was my birthday, they brought out a panna cotta on the house which was really sweet. It was amazing, not overly sweet, very smooth and creamy. Highly recommend this restaurant if you're craving Italian. Authentic, delicious, and great service!
