Loved our designer. She worked very hard to work with (skeptical) husband to get just what he wanted for his built in office. He no longer has mismatched furniture but a really sleek gorgeous office with extra room for papers to books. The construction crew worked diligently and quickly putting his room together in two days. Husband is very happy and amazed with the extra space. I only wish I had thought ahead and had room painted but we will have to do that at a later date. I cannot recommend Closets By Design any higher. It was a perfect fit for us. I recently purchased a condo that came with zero closet shelving or organizing systems. I decided to get a closet company build the following ones: small utility closet, hallway reach in closet, large master bedroom and guest bedroom closets. In addition I also needed a huge media unit in my living room (~20ft long by 8 ft high) with shelving for all of my books on one of the ends, and another one for my master bedroom (~15ft long by 10 ft high). I wanted to ensure I got the right company to do all these jobs and did extensive research on the 5 main companies that service the Metro DC area: Closets by Design, Closet America, Econize, California Closets, and Closet Factory. Each of them came over to see me, took measurements, submitted their proposed designs and gave me cost estimates. The final decision came down to Closets by Design and Closet America who had the best designs and the best prices. I ended selecting Closets by Design as their designs and finish was much superior, and their pricing was substantially better than that of Closet America. Incidentally, California closets had perhaps a slightly better overall product but it was TWICE as expensive as most of the other companies so the cost was not justified at all and personally I personally found them to be very overpriced. I would like to highly recommend Closets by Design to all the Yelp readers who may be hesitating which company to choose for their closet work. The reasons for my recommendation are as shown below: 1- Their designers are a pleasure to work with. They are extremely flexible and will work with you until the design and closet you are looking for is achieved. The two I worked with were very kind attentive and always on time. 2- No matter what company you choose there will always be small problems. The question then is whether the closet company will own the problem or try to sweep it under the rug. In my case the Closets by Design management acknowledged my feedback and requests, and made the necessary changes until I was 100% satisfied and there were no extra charges. 3- The quality and expertise and installers is also key. The ones I dealt with were absolutely top notch. Walls and floors are sometimes not perfectly straight so it takes a lot of skill to sometimes make things fit the way they are supposed to. My installers did an incredible job and worked on the closet until it was completed to my satisfaction. 4- Overall you will find that top to bottom, from management to installers, you are dealing with a really nice group of people who care about the customer and will always do the right thing. I am EXTREMELY HAPPY with the Closets by Design team and highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for functional, useful, high quality closets at the best price in the market. read more

This was a huge mistake on my part. I should have done more research. First off, the construction, while true, can be taken with you, are about a half inch a piece. Do the math. As you add pieces you lose space. Second, the hype about personal design is not all that it's cracked up to be. Maybe if you get a top notch designer. Mine was not and was a tad insensitive to my needs. Nice person but not that strong. And the real issue is that closet needs don't usually remain static. Everytime you need a change, even a slight one, you are going to be charged as service call. The entire project was overpriced when I later compared it to others. If I could do it over, I would head straight to Elfa and Container Store. Save your money. Now if you have a very large space...maybe... But I was seriously disappointed and though I knew what I was getting, really felt exploited. BAD NEWS! read more

I was very selective and changed the design several times, but he was always there to help out and adjust the design. I shopped around with a few companies and ultimately chose this one because they are a one stop shop and have a lot of options to help you create whatever type of custom closet you are looking for. Going to the warehouse is good so you can see these options in person. The guys that came to build the closet were punctual, knowledgeable, and did a great job. They did not damage my home and left it clean. Once the closet was done I was SO happy! It is even better than I envisioned! The product and installation was fine. What I did not like was the interaction after being locked in by signing the contract with the various folks - Teri, Gale and money person to exact - but mostly Gale who had this nice/nasty way. She sweetly tells you what she wants you to know even if it doesn't answer your question then proceeds to try to move you along while not inviting any follow on questions. In general, there was this condescending attitude and exasperation when I reached out after signing the contract to ask questions. Questions were brushed off or answers were short and not comprehensive as they tried to "handle" me. During the design I was told install wouldn't happen for over a month. I said shucks but okay. After a few weeks I was like somebody had to have cancel. You can't tell me they are busy every day for over 30 days. Well trying to get that info from Gale and Teri was frustrating until Gale finally said that resides with another department. I'm thinking why am I messing with you then. Not only was she condescending I think she had no intention of passing my desire for an earlier date to install. When I learned she wasn't who I should be speaking with, I asked to speak to the proper dept and she wasn't too keen to transfer me. The install guy had a bit of an attitude when he picked up, maybe forewarned, but at this point I didn't care cause I was locked in a contract. They would just have to deal with me. After he heard what I wanted, he called me back within 15 mins with a date less than 2 weeks out. Signed contract in July, install was for 2 Oct but after my chat, was changed to 10 Sept. Date change was needed because I had recently moved to this new home and I was going back to work. I could not offload boxes until the closet (2ea) and pantry systems were installed. The last straw was at the end of the install, the tech had a hard copy of the contract, to include the credit card page that was sent in when paying the deposit...very poor security practices. I wanted to pay the balance with my debit card but didn't feel comfortable handing it to the tech so he said an option was for the company to call me. I said great, let's do that. After the techs left I immediately called the company but the money person departed for the day so I left a clear voice message on her machine as to what I wanted. Instead of calling me back they charged my credit card. This last customer interaction confirmed what I've been feeling all along - company's "you should be happy with what I give you" attitude was consistent throughout. Sadly two friends loved the installed but after telling them about my customer experience, they declined to engage with the company and went with two others. read more

Just incredible! My husband and I were super busy- we had just moved into our new home a week before heading off to a trip to Dubai. During that week before vacation, we knew we absolutely needed to get our closet situation in order as soon as possible. We were tired of living out of boxes (and the closet option that our home builder offered was simply a single wooden rod and one long wooden shelf). We got home from vacation- literally got off the plane- and drove to custom closet showrooms. We didn't want to waste any time. We went to a few in Virginia and were unimpressed by the delayed and unenthusiastic greetings we received. Upon entering the Closets by Design showroom, we were greeted warmly by a receptionist and shortly after, a sales representative came over to talk to us about our needs. We wanted something done as soon as possible, so she asked when we'd like to schedule our in-home consultation, and we asked "how about today?"- not expecting it to be possible. However, she made multiple calls to various designers and was able to find someone that could come over later that day. Alan Hanel was the designer that came to our home to help us build our dream closet. He was so professional and knowledgeable. He was a kind and honest person and didn't try to sell us anything that we didn't want. The entire process was very enjoyable. We cannot wait to customize the rest of our closets/living spaces in our home! The installer was also wonderful- he came on a snowy day and we didn't have a shovel (first snow for first time homeowners) to clear the path he needed to walk through to bring all of the heavy pieces and parts for the closet. he actually helped me shovel with an avocado box from costco. he never complained once. true story. He was so nice!! The final product is amazing. The closet is absolutely beautiful, and will be one of my favorite rooms in our house from now on. I never thought that all of our clothes would fit into our closet, and had been searching for an additional wardrobe for the bedroom to give us additional hanging space--but- I couldn't believe it- we actually have EXTRA SPACE to hang clothes! I did the entire process for my master closet during the pandemic and am very happy with the results. My designer, Prerna, was wonderful and worked with me, answering all my questions and making suggestions. I felt she really listened. The communication throughout the process was great. The installers arrived on time, wore masks, and were respectful of my physical (person and built) space for the most part.
