We stumbled here after a movie at the Music Box. The beer and wine selections are wide. It was about an hour to closing so we had plenty of time, but we felt rushed. It is very dark in there, I realize that may be for atmosphere but it also makes it hard to see. Our house salad and vodka meatball pizza were great. We took some home to have the next day, and it was still great. Again, as Kathy Z stated, we felt kind of rushed, but we don't get out to that area very much so its no biggie. We were craving some pizza and wanted to try out a new place. So we ordered delivery from here. We opted for a caesar salad, vodka meatball pizza, and bacon jam pizza. $70 later... Our order arrived 1) cold and 2) without the salad. The delivery driver (which is done via Caviar) came back later with the salad. The flavors / combinations are good. But the crust is very floppy. Kinda like eating a pizza made on a soggy tortilla. Meh. The bacon jam pizza was disappointing as it was just tiny dollops if bacon jam. The vodka meatball pizza was pretty tasty, but definitely needed more basil (only one slice had any basil on it). Not sure if that's all how it's supposed to be or we just got some sloppily executed pizza. But based off of our expensive experience (two small pizzas and a small salad for $70!), I doubt we'll be ordering from here again. read more

I called the restaurant and asked them about this situation and they said the pizza was made fresh for me. The person who answered the phone told me that he could offer a discount. YELPING ON A THIN LINE How does one rate a business that you know to be good, but what they serve just isn't your cup of tea? A tough question to answer, so my Yelpiest (objective) opinion is as follows: Coalfire makes a terrific, wafer-thin crust pizza and offer a multitude of premium toppings. The interior is super trendy cool and the servers are convivial. But I'm still not sold on this place. Why? Because I don't like the taste or the texture of cracker 'za. Deep dish is delicious, pan pies are perfect, New York style is no problemo, but when it comes to ultra thin crust pizzas, I'm the Simpson's old man yelling at the cloud, so to speak......I'm confused and just don't get it. LeAnn P and I were once again rebuffed by a restaurant (earlier it was the random closure of a breakfast spot, this time it was the 2 hour wait for Chicago Pizza and Grinder Oven). So once again we located a backup plan; enter Coalfire Pizza. We were seated right away and wasted no time in ordering a bottle of Chianti. Our unusually extroverted server, Megan, took splendid care of us. LP and I ultimately decided on the standard 14" pizza ($13.50) with the addition of arugula (+$2) and prosciutto (+$3). Toppings are widely varied and range from veggies to deluxe cheese to atypical meats. The thicker the crust, the longer the bake times. Lou Malnati's and Pequod's generally take 45-60 minutes per pie, but Coalfire's comes out in 15-20 minutes due to the very thin crust. Because of the exposure to intense heat and lack of dough, the bottoms get burnt which is apparently a thing nowadays? I thought that the "slightly charred" crust gave a bitter, metallic aftertaste that I didn't care for at all. When it came to the choice of toppings......we chose poorly. FYI, Prosciutto and arugula is NOT the pairing to go with, as the field greens absolutely dominated the large pizza and the slices of prosciutto were far and few between. Not to mention, the pizza wasn't cut all the way so some slices wound up being gargantuan. I'm glad that the dining room tables included canisters of oil, parmesan and crushed red pepper flakes, since without them I would've had a tough time choking down what amounted to a cracker topped with salad. Bread = 3 Circuses = 4 Megan's awesomely candid demeanor earned her a sizeable gratuity (I think). She cracked some jokes which I appreciated and seemed happy to be at work. The men's restroom had an insanely cold draft coming from the bare brick wall (with exposed plumbing to the outside), which meant you got treated to a blast of icy air while you pee. That was exciting. Our experience could've been drastically different had we chosen other toppings but it still wouldn't have been enough for a full 5*. The chairs were weirdly uncomfortable and apart from salads, there wasn't much else on the menu. I don't know if I'll come back. I suppose it's a good thing we stopped in, as now I know I'm definitely not a thin crust guy. This used to be Hye Bar/ I remember drinking shots looking at a fish tank behind the bar but it's now Coalfire, their second location. First time at Coalfire, their pizza is different than the usuals you will find in Chicago. They are a lot thinner with a slightly thicker crust. The pizza only have one size. At first glance, it looks like one person can finish a pie! Before diving more into the pizza, I want to give a quick shout out to our waiter. I don't remember his name, but he was very personable and humorous. He provided great service, but paired with some clumsy moves as he would drop occasional silverware. It wasn't a big deal because all that can be replaced. It was a couple too much. His jokes helped eased it. The pizzas are placed on top of big tomato sauce cans with Italian in it. I mentioned this because my girlfriend compared the pizza to true Italian pizza when she recently visited the country. It was refreshing to eat something not deep dish or pan. The pizza really thrived on being thin. The crust was too sweet, either. Also, menu claimed that all ingredients are organic and non-GMO. We ordered the pepperoni with whipped piles of ricotta cheese. The ricotta had great flavor with a small hint of garlic in it. The other pizza was called 'Nduja - Berkshire sausage with the ricotta and basil. I favored the simple pepperoni pizza, not too many different things going on. I'd been wanting to visit Coalfire for a while, because I knew they offered vegan pizza. The perfect time to visit came after we saw a matinee at The Music Box. The day was warm and sunny, the Cubs fans had gone to the game, and there were plenty of open tables at the outdoor patio. We ordered the vegan pesto pizza. This has a paper-thin crust, and comes with mushrooms, fresh spinach, and tomatoes on top. It was very good. There were eight slices, and that was just the right amount for two hungry middle-aged women. We were pleasantly full, not stuffed. Coalfire offers many options for drinks -- non-alcoholic as well as beer, wine, and mixed drinks. The only slightly off things happened with our drinks order, not with the meal. I ordered a bottled beer, and I got the bottle. I did not get a glass, nor was I offered a glass. Frankly, if offered a glass, I probably would've turned it down. After working more than 20 years in the restaurant and catering industry, though, I think that a glass should be offered, because we expect a glass is typically going to be clean. Fastidious people (clearly, not me) don't like drinking from the bottle. My friend had iced tea. The server came around and asked if she wanted a refill. She did, and it came quickly. However, there was no mention made of a charge for a refill. She didn't know there was a charge until we were presented with the check. Again, this isn't a deal-breaker, but come on! If there's going to be an additional charge for anything, tell the customer. Then the customer can decide whether to order or not. You don't just trick the customer into an upcharge. I do want to stress, these issues with the drinks are small issues. They aren't deal-breakers -- unless, of course, you're with a large party, and your bill is significantly boosted by these surprise charges. In a professional environment, that should never happen. Would I go to Coalfire again? Sure. The food and drink tasted good. It's certainly conveniently located to The Music Box. And we liked the outdoor seating. We'll just be sure to ask questions about what things cost before saying something careless like "sure, I'll have a refill." read more

I do declare Coalfire Pizza has the best thin crust in the city! Game over. I now sit in sadness of all the time lost going to subpar pizza shops when I could have been getting their delicious flavor combinations and mouthwatering paper thin crust. I recently discovered honey on pizza is a thing so when I saw the Honey & Salami pizza from Coalfire, it had to be ordered. $17 will get you this bad boy covered in mozzarella, calabrese salami and honey. So simple yet delicious to the point that I could not stop shoveling it into my mouth. My stomach was screaming No!!! You're full!!! ...but my mouth was whispering...One more tiny slice never killed anyone... My body was in a battle fo sho! Their crust is so thin and just right with proper burnt edges from the coalfire heating. The honey sweetly pairs so well with the cheese and balances out the slight spice of the salami. I highly recommend the Honey & Salami pizza. My friends and I also tried the Fungi pizza which can be had for 19 Washingtons. It is loaded with mushrooms of various shapes and sizes over a dreamy truffle paste, panna cream, garlic and extra virgin olive oil. This pizza made me feel healthy and one with the earth thanks to all the little toadstools on it. This vegetarian option pizza was so incredibly delicious, my fumbling words wouldn't do the pie justice. I couldn't get enough of both pizzas I tried. Sorry, I can't. Really. Let me rewind a little bit (take a sip of some sarcasm) and explain, because every restaurant has a fair shot of serving their customers (mindfully) and providing a pleasant dining experience. In general, thin crust pizza is my absolute fave. I specifically recommended this place to have dinner with a friend before catching a film at the Musicbox. I was excited to try Coalfire for the first time and there has been some online buzz, so I wanted to see what it was all about. Plus, as a neighborhood resident, I love when new businesses make a home in Southport Corridor. My friend was early so she managed to snag a table outside and order a glass of wine. I was frantically power-walking a few blocks to meet her. She told me she was already seated. At Coalfire, apprently they have these guidelines, which they follow to the tee. Taken from their website: "1. We are 1st come, 1st served. You must be present to be placed on the waiting list." 2. We will only seat complete parties. 3. To ensure that everyone gets a place to sit, you may be asked for your table after you've finished." They will follow their rules at the expense of customer service. Good job! While my friend had ordered a glass of wine at a table for two, waiting for me, she was guiltripped by our server, reminded that her party was incomplete. And worse yet, she was my invited guest, sorry I was late! But... For the rest of the time, she was not even able to look our server in the eye. Mock charm, when I finally joined, with a jolly "How are you ladies doing? What can I get for you?" How can a customer be made to feel so horrible, and once your party is complete you can treat them decently again? Things happen, sometimes people run ahead/behind schedule, but most of all I think humans do not enjoy feeling harangued. However subtle the exchange was, when your dining partner already mentions that they're not coming back before the food is served, that is a clear sign. Actually, they should turn those aforementioned rules into a sign [flashing neon lights], hang it outside, and refer to it with a laser pointer, with the fine print being, "or ELSE." Follow the rules, Yelp nation, because it's what we've been taught since preschool. If you deviate, your pizza will end up tasting like contempt. The bruschetta was good though. Chicago's got their deep dish all figured out. But if Coalfire is going to rep thin crust pizza, they have some improving to do, especially in their customer service department ("people over pizza"). The burrata (which sounds great) is $15. Fifteen American dollars. The pizzas are all $15-$20, so you want us to spend the same amount on our entree as our appetizer? Git yo prices in check, Coalfire! I had the creatively-named "Meat" pizza. It came topped with salami, sausage and long strips of prosciutto. It was alright. The crust is extremely thin and floppy. There was not much cheese or sauce. The toppings mostly just fell off. Instead of pizza, Coalfire should say they serve "lightly cooked dough with a light glaze of bland tomato sauce, a sprinkling of cheese and haphazardly administered toppings you will need to balance atop each slice." It wasn't bad or anything, it just wasn't that great. At $19.50 for one thin pizza, I can think of a lot of restaurants that will serve you better food. My girlfriend tried the cremini pizza and made note that the pizza cools off too much before you can eat it. That's true. The last half of my pizza was ice cold as I finished it. Came by here on a Friday night (because Tango Sur, a few doors down had a 45 minute wait) around 9 pm for dinner and was seated right away (still plenty of people seated eating dinner, both inside and outside) at a small table. After browsing the menu, we ended up getting: Fennel Salad, $10 prior to tax- This salad was really delicious and a good size to share with another person or as a meal for one person. This salad is so fresh and the fennel is tender. There is also cucumber slices, radish slices basil and mint in this salad and the buttermilk dressing is really creamy and delicious. This is definitely a must to order. Pistachio Pesto, $18 prior to tax- This pizza is made with pesto (made with pistachios), sausage, burrata cheese and honey. This pizza is fantastic and has a great balance of savory and sweetness (because of the honey). The honey drizzled on is sheer genius. I will be adding honey to my pizzas when I make them at home from now on. There is a good amount of ground sausage pieces all over this pizza, promising you one on every bite. I love this pizza and would order this one again. But I do want to mention that I did bite into a pistachio shell on my first bite which was rather disappointing, but that was the only shell piece I bite into. Rowdy Root Beer, $5 prior to tax- Lately I have been really into adult root beer (the root beer with alcohol) so I decided to order this. Although this was okay, I wasn't a big fan of this brand and probably wouldn't order this one again. ------------------------------- (Total= $35.94 after tax, prior to tip) Eating at this place is rather pricey, but the pizza are amazing! He made a great suggestion on what to order after we told him this was our first time to this restaurant (which is a new 2nd location for this restaurant). He made sure to check in with us after we had a chance to try this pizza and was pleased that we agreed with him that the pizza was incredible. Even though Chicago is known for their deep dish pizzas, I would still come back to eat at Coalfire again in the future for the thin crust, especially that gosh darn Pistachio Pesta Pizza. By the way, the women's restroom (towards the back of the restaurant) was clean upon this visit. It is also really loud inside the restaurant with other restaurant patrons talking among themselves (talking louder over the music so their guests can hear them). I tried their West Town location first with some family and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this pizza- I'm usually not a huge fan of thin-crust. When I went the first time, I tried the lasagna, pepperoni with whipped ricotta, and grand ave white pizza. My second time, which was at their Southport location, I tried some of the stracciatella & sausage and the vodka meatball. Each pie has its own distinct flavor, which was awesome because I feel like lots of pizza places tend to have a bunch of options that all somehow end up tasting really similar. But not these! I ate at Coalfire on a weeknight at 6pm. When we walked in the place was empty other than one long table with 3 children and their parents. We were seated close to the windows, far enough from the screaming children, and browsed the menu. The food options looked good with about 15 different pizzas and build-your-own options. I struggled with the menu a bit because I couldn't quite find where they discussed the type of sauces they offered on their pizzas. Some of their pizzas just had "sauce" listed as an ingredient. Am I to assume that's a marina sauce or perhaps a white sauce? I don't know!! My sister opted for the white pizza (mozzarella, garlic, evoo, oregano, basil, and ricotta) and I opted for a build-your-own with the veal meatballs. The waitress asked what sauce I liked and I ignorantly replied white as the acidity of some tomato based sauces often bothers me. Five minutes later the waitress came back and asked what kind of white sauce I wanted...a garlic one or a truffle one? I went with garlic but the menu should really explain this. As for drinks, we just stuck with water for the table while I got an apple juice, in a kids carton. The menu didn't mention that either which was fine but it did hurt my ego a bit haha. Otherwise, the drinks menu was pretty good for a casual pizza place and I was quite impressed with the beer list especially. The full bar is a good touch too! While waiting, another family with 4 screaming kids set up camp close to us. I guess this is Southport so this is to be expected but parents really need to keep their kids under control. One child knocked over his chair and promptly burst into tears. When the pizzas came they looked delicious! The crust was really thin, something I love far more than any Chicago style crust, and the toppings looked good. We made quick work of both pizzas and were left with 3 slices of each which we put in a take-out box. The little heaps of whipped ricotta cheese were my favorite part and I actually wish that was featured on all of their pizzas. There also could have been a little more cheese if I'm honest. But then again more cheese on everything would generally be a good thing. Overall this is a solid pizza place. We've been to the Grand Avenue location many times and ended up near this one in Lakeview the other day and thought, why not? Super glad we went because our server said those 2 little words we love to hear - Happy Hour! From 4-6pm Tues.-Thurs. all pizzas are $14 and there are drink specials. We ordered $5 Happy Hour Mules and an Nduja Pizza - to see how it compares to Grand Avenue and also just because we love that spicy, super flavorful pizza. The pizza tasted almost identical to their other location and the Mules were pretty good even if they weren't served in the copper mugs. The space on Southport is significantly bigger than their mothership location and our server said it gets really busy on weekends there. The pizzas come out fast because the ovens are so hot so he said the waits aren't too bad even when they get busy. If this Coalfire is as consistently great as Grand Ave. is, I'll likely be giving them 5 stars, too. More sampling ahead here! read more

Hearing so many good things about this pizza spot, we decided to go for my girlfriends birthday. We each had a drink, and they were cheap with the 4-6 happy hour. Shared a Caesar salad (1 is plenty for 2) and it was really good. Big slices of cheese, nice crunchy lettuce, it was a great way to start out the dinner. Then we got one of the specials "The new porker" I think it was called. Lots of meat, the ricotta cheese dollops they're known for, and the best thin, crispy crust. So good. The first pizza on happy hour is $14 too, and one pizza is plenty for 2. We had leftovers. Highly recommend this place, the patio is nice too, and Jeni's is nearby for dessert : D read more

I had a chance to come in here twice within a couple of months and I enjoyed each of the pizzas we tried, as did the different company I was with for each visit! I love the different combinations on the pizzas, such as vodka sauce and meatballs, or black garlic with goat cheese. I also enjoyed the thin crust with the flavoring from the coal fire oven. I took the advice from another yelp review about the Meatball Dip Sandwich. It is soooooo good and easily the best meatball sandwich I have ever had. Pizza is pretty good also but this has become my item that I will always order here. Yum! read more
