My cousin recommended this place for the fresh, catch of the day fish and chips. We got in around 1:30 on a perfect Friday afternoon. The patio is dog friendly and we were quickly seated. They had a good, informative wine menu with lots of options, much of them from sustainable vineyards. I picked out a dry riesling from Pacific Rim in Washington. It turned out to work well with the fish and chips as well as the cheese plate. The day's catch was salmon, so I ordered that. My wife had bad luck with salmon fish and chips at another place, so chose the cheese plate. We also ordered oysters with garlic and butter. Starting with oysters, they were delicious, fresh, and came right out of the shell. The cheese plate included four local cheeses, honeycomb, apricot compote, strawberries, blueberries, and toasted crackers.The Red Hawk from Cowgirl Creamery was the best and most versatile. The salmon and chips was perfect. The batter was crispy, and the fish was moist. It was obvislously fresh. There were three big pieces to make a generous portion. The coleslaw was decent, same for the chips. The tartar sauce had a hint of paprika, a good addition for the salmon. It was a big hit with my wife. The one warning about this place is that it is cash only. It can really add up fast. We might have ordered more but I wanted to reserve some of our cash, and I won't pay for an expensive ATM because the owner refuses to find a good merchant services company. read more

After spending time in nature, we visited this restaurant and it looked nice with both outdoor and indoor seating. Parking is limited around the area, be prepared to park further down the road. We were seated quickly and the server took our order. We got the grilled chicken sandwich and fish and chips. The portion sizes were decent but the taste did not meet our expectations. Both the chicken sandwich and cod fish and chips were dry. In addition, we ordered a sweet tea and the server forgot about it. Good food but taking two stars off for hostess and wait time. We almost left this joint because it took 15-20 minutes to get a table and the hostess did not acknowledge us. The line wasn't that long and I'm not sure why it took so long to seat us when there seemed to be a good amount of tables. When I asked her how much longer it would be, she replied, "I haven't gotten to you yet." This is not the proper way to treat customers. My friends and I were miffed and considered leaving. Once seated, we got a great server (blond-haired fellow who could remember everything without writing anything down) and wait staff. Food came in a timely manner and it was tasty - nothing mind-blowing but it was good. We got good portions for the price and had nothing to complain about. Parking can be tight but we weren't expecting anything otherwise in the area. There aren't many places to eat so if you're in the area check it out. My friends enjoyed this place after we got seated. I personally would not go back because I don't like waiting, especially when we have no idea when there is going to availability. Oh man, this place. We were staying in Bolinas for the night, and when I heard there was basically only one restaurant in town, I had very little expectations. Thought I'd be eating some mediocre sandwich or something to fill my stomach for the night. Man was I wrong. Everything I got there was so delicious and had such great quality ingredients. Blatant discrimination towards patrons by the owner is unacceptable. Recently heard about an incident from an acquaintance who went here while on her honeymoon and was told not to take pictures by the owner. She was targeted and singled out despite the rule not being clearly posted or applying to other patrons also taking photos. Heavily biased. Owner needs diversity training. No one can deny the food here is great. What's not so great is the treatment of the patrons by the owner. We watched a young black woman get told to stop taking pictures inside the restaurant by the owner, when there are absolutely no signs saying it's not allowed. Later on, when the place got more crowded, there were several people taking pictures of the woman singing and the owner had nothing to say to them. One of our best meals in California. We ate at the patio area and enjoyed people watching. Lots of locals and a great vibe to the small town. Our service was perfectly paced and we were given time to enjoy our food. I really enjoyed the Cesar salad. Yeah, sounds boring, but it was fresh and crunchy with the perfect amount of dressing. I also had a yummy root beer. I forget the brand but it was definitely not from a big name brand. I did not step foot inside, I was having too much fun chilling in the patio. Parking is on the street and free. And wow, did they ever! Patrick and the crew at Coast really came through for us...they planned a diverse and delicious menu for us. They worked with us to make sure all dietary requests were handled, they were responsive and kind to our situation...and THE FOOD! Just wow. Amazing pastries, the BEST breakfast burritos with house-made sauce, yummy turkey chili...everything was SO good! The people working with us were raving about how delicious everything was...and how beautifully presented the dishes were! So, I never write reviews on yelp this is my first and I just had to write it to tell you about an incredible experience. My daughter and I drove to bolinas for a mom daughter hike and wound up at the Coastal Cafe. The vibe was super friendly and laid back. We split a salad and soup and it was delicious! Our waitress Chelsea had the most adorable pig tails and dimples and she never stopped smiling! Fast forward two days... I pulled my wallet out at the grocery store and realized I had left my cc at the restaurant. I called and sure enough Chelsea had it and agreed to mail it to me as I live 2 hours away. A few days later the card came back via first class and inside was my card and a sweet note from Chelsea. She took the time to go to the small post office AND-this is the kicker- she paid $7.30 for the postage herself-which was more than her tip!!! If I owned a restaurant I would poach her to come work for me! ANYWAY, it's good to know in these times when we are losing faith in each other that the human spirit is alive and well in a young, beautiful girl at the Coastal Cafe in Bolinas! While visiting Bolinas my husband and I decided to grab a bite to eat. We sat at a table outside and enjoyed our conversation while people watching. We ordered the calamari, clam chowder, caesar salad and a side of cheese grits to share. Everything, especially the clam chowder, tasted great. My experience with this restaurant started out great as the halibut fish special I ordered and assobuco my girlfriend ordered were delicious. Clam chowder and bread was also excellent. The halibut fish special came with a vegetable medley on rice. Excellent. Local wine just OK. We had Pliedes Cabernet and overpriced at $50 bottle. We had the chocolate brownie ala mode for dessert and I thought it tasted to doughy and the chocolate ice cream had a weird taste. Excellent service on Tuesday night. Unfortunately we went back the next day and our experience wasn't so good. We both ordered the burger medium with cheese. Our burgers came without cheese, were overcooked, and dry. I'm starting to discover that I'm a hippie at heart. And. I'm starting to discover that I like to be wooed like a hippie as well. On a nice day - I'd rather relax at Hippie Hill than be anywhere else.... I prefer mix CDs to expensive gifts. I don't want to have to wear heels - for a night out. Not fun. And just not me. I'd rather go to an amazing affordable concert - than hang out at a wine bar or lounge. I'm not sure how to appreciate glitzy cars. A working radio and or CD player is all I'm interested in. I'm not wowed by who you know - but by the way you appreciate and love people. The crackle of an old record player seduces my ear better than a shiny sound system. Having a schedule gets stressful. Living on a whim is exciting. Thrift store shopping on Haight Street = way more fun than the mall. I'll take documentaries and independent films over - over the top movie productions. And ... I'd rather a low-key comfortable fresh tasting restaurant - than some chic - overcrowded hot-spot. And that's just what Coast Cafe is. The perfect most lovely date spot. (Though it's really the most on point spot for any sort of gathering or outing - as evidenced by the fact that I came here with my fellow ginger friend Hailey P this weekend. I can't thank her enough for not only introducing me to Bolinas, but for introducing me to this epic quaint wood filled wonderland of cuteness.) After a seriously perfect day at Bolinas Beach - we made our way over to the homey refuge of Coast Cafe. Coast Cafe is like forehead kisses. Sweet, warm, and reassuring. There's soft red and brown woods everywhere. The lighting is gentle and flattering. The staff smile at you genuinely as you enter and they seem to radiate health and life - which is always a solid sign about a restaurant. And the food: My fresh clam linguini - looked like sculpture on a plate. The massive serving of linguini was cooked perfectly, and the sauce was soulful - it was so fresh. Just the right amount of richness - peppered with a little bit of spice. The clam shells were the most elegant rich shades of purple, and there must have been at least 20 or so of them - propped ever so nicely on top of the generous dish of pasta excellence. Hailey's fish dish looked just as dreamy. Though we were both full, we both confessed to having sweet tooths and went for the Blackberry Pie a la Mode. Damn... The berries - must have been just picked - they were so robust and exploding with flavor. I had to make sure the plate was slightly closer to Hailey - so I wouldn't eat it all. The crust was buttery and soft with touches of crispy edges. The ice-cream was creamy organic vanilla - which melted into the blackberry masterpiece like a gentle running stream. Slowly and decisively. Le sigh. The service was exceptional throughout the evening as well. Our waitress applauded us on our ordering - and her excitement about each dish - and especially the pie - only added to the flavor of each dish. Considering the prices of Coast Cafe's dishes - which are all fresh and organic - it's truly exceptional how Coast Cafe manages to execute such sensational bliss- for such reasonable prices. They take great pride in only serving locally grown organic produce, Niman Ranch meats, locally harvested fish and shellfish, local organic dairy, and they use only natural oils. They also support sustainable farming methods. That is what's UP. SO What's Up. You will likely end up at Coast Cafe out of desperation -- there is practically nowhere else to eat in the tiny hamlet of Bolinas. This could be an unfortunate dilemma, but thankfully Coast Cafe embraces the Bolinas appetite for farm-fresh cuisine at a fair price. Hooray! Aside from the made-with-love healthy comfort food, Coast Cafe has a nice little patio out front, where you can take in Bolinas' prime small-town people watching. Coast Cafe might be the only place in Bolinas that wants you there. Bolinas is notoriously unwelcoming to outsiders. For years, every sign that marks the roads in has been torn down by residents. In fact, the official town sign doesn't even give its own name. It says something along the lines of, "You are entering a socially-conscious unincorporated town." Coast Cafe, however, is worth the risk of being run out of town by angry hippie artists who can somehow afford $850,000 for a loft. It's a lovely little cafe with great food. It's affordable, too--I was pleased by the offering of a single, large blueberry pancake for only $4.50. Most places would charge double or triple that for a stack you couldn't finish. And the crab omelet was amazing--the crab was clearly fresh. Oh, and by the way--Bolinas is the first left after the lagoon. read more
