Coastal Flats is one of my favorite GARs, and while I do slightly prefer the Tysons location to the Fairfax Corner location (it's just so humongous, and it was freezing inside on our last visit, but it's not like it's a bad spot by any means), Coastal is always a great spot to grab a bite. It does get busy during prime eating hours, even on a random Tuesday at lunchtime, so bear that in mind, but it's always worth a trip! Some of my favorite items on the menu are the spinach & artichoke dip, chopped salad, mango chicken salad, crispy two noodle shrimp salad, and crab cake (either in the sandwich or the entree). So much yum! We always have very positive, even service, and who can resist their bread basket (Ozzie rolls FTW!) Coastal is pretty much in my standard rotation of go-to restaurants in the area, and will remain as one! read more

Didn't want to sit out in the heat so we started inside Covid style - many tables blocked off it was fine: nice waitress - ordered a bottle of wine and enjoyed the little dough balls that come with the sweet butter. Then we had two great meals / salmon salad - my fave never disappoints. The greens were so fresh and chilled and the salmon was perfectly cooked. Personally, I think it is a much overrated restaurant. I'd say the best thing is the mood of the restaurant. When you walk in, you can immediately sense a relaxed vibe which I really like. Workers are normally good, haven't experienced any problems with that. The thing that gets me disappointed is the menu variation. I don't think there's much of a variety to choose from so it always takes me a long time. It's also on the pricier side. I totally understand why people come here but I just don't think it's my type of food. I only come here when my friends want to but it's just mediocre I'd say. Our server, Joe, was such a fun, relaxed yet attentive person! He deserves five stars just for himself. And then the food....another 5 stars. Our group enjoyed Crab Cakes, Pecan Crusted Trout, and the Coastal Roast Chicken Salad. I wanted to order the Key Lime Pie but no one else wanted dessert so I'll order that next time. Came here for dinner on the patio and it was amazing. We made a reservation and although we were able to be seated fairly quickly, it looked like they were turning down anyone that did have a reservation. We both got the crab cake and filet meal. Everything was very good; the only thing we didn't care for was the remoulade sauce. We expected long waits and a crowded restaurant because our reservations were right at noon, but although the restaurant was crowded the crowd was dispersed enough throughout the area that we didn't have to squeeze by a million different people. After being seated we were quickly brought our bread basket which included their Ozzie rolls and honey butter. This signature roll and butter combo is half of the reason my family chose a Great American restaurant for lunch. I could fill myself up solely on those! We ordered the lobster bisque and the deviled eggs as appetizers and they both came out extremely quickly. My brother seemed to really enjoy the bisque and the deviled eggs were incredible! I don't usually like deviled eggs, but these changed my mind for sure! And the bacon they came with was perfectly crispy! I'm usually very picky about my bacon but I could've eaten a whole plate of this stuff. I ended up ordering the chicken Havarti sandwich with a side of fries. The fries are the perfect thickness (not like steak fries at all) and were salted just enough, but they had nothing on the sandwich. The bread gave that nice crunch you hear only when it's perfectly toasted. The Havarti cheese was melted evenly throughout the sandwich and gave it an amazing flavor. the only complaint I had was the chicken was a little bit dry, but because of the tomato, cheese, and mayo in the sandwich it was easy to ignore. As a picky eater I wasn't expect much h from this restaurant , my expectations went through the roof. For my apps I tried the special which was bruschetta! The tomatoes were absolutely divine! (I usually hate tomatoes) the second app I ordered was the spinach artichoke dip. The dip was mouthwatering just by the looks of it and the chips that came were perfect. For my main course I chose something different which was the Hong Kong style sea bass. I didn't end up liking this dish but the sauce was great! I just didn't like the texture of the sea bass but it's nice to try things once. Overall I would definitely want to come here again. The staff is so welcoming! Our buzzer went off and we still had to wait ten minutes at the podium to be seated. I thought those things only went off when the table was ready? My best friend and I were trying to kill some time before watching the new avengers Movie in the theaters. So we came here because she was raving about this restaurant. So I was like might as well try it out, I mean what could go right ya know? The atmosphere of the restaurant remind me of a classy but causal beach house in North Carolina. There's bunch of small elements that give it a nautical feel. It's honestly a beautiful restaurant. A few things I've noticed on the menu is that they don't have a huge selection of cocktails but their wine selection is extensive. In addition you have the ability to order sangria by the pitcher. The beer selection is kind of small. Plus there's no happy hour which is fine with me because the food is really good there's no need for alcohol to enhance the enjoyment of the food. I feel like the alcohol served is meant to compliment the food or be paired with the food even though they do have a small bar area. As for the food it was really good. They gave us complementary bread basket. Inside it contained a slice of what seems like sourdough bread and a fried doughnut type bread. It came with a lemon poppyseed type butter which was delicious!! I ordered the fish tacos, they come with habanero slaw and sweet potato fries. I was worried the habanero would make the slaw too spicy but there was a perfect balance of heat. My only critique would be that I wish the flour tortillas were a tad bit more crispier so that it's able to hold the contents of the taco. Everything else was super delicious! To finish it off I had the key lime pie also nice, tart and not overly sweet which is good. Overall I would highly recommend coming and trying out the fish tacos. Also everyone was friendly and nice. Ozzie rolls, enough said. The free Ozzie rolls are enough of a reason to come here to eat. They are the fluffiest, most buttery, melt-in-your-mouth bread. Did I mention that they're free? Because they are! I came here with my family on a weekday for dinner. We started off our meal with the blue crab and rock shrimp fritters. This dish is a must-try! The dish's presentation alone makes it a great experience. The fritters are highly crunchy on the outside yet soft and creamy on the inside. I could tell that they used real crab meat as the crab has a nice texture. The dish's sauce is the best part. It's creamy and really savory- so good. I ordered the short smoked salmon filet which came with cauliflower mash. The salmon was cooked perfectly. It was soft yet still firm. I loved the cauliflower mash. It tasted similar to mash potatoes but it's a bit lighter. My sister got the crab cakes with shoe string fries, my mom got the filet mignon with a Caesar salad, and my dad got the druken ribeye. I got to try a bit of all of their food and everything was great. The crab cakes were made with real crab meat and they were generous. The chunks of crab were soft and flavorful. The filet mignon was the best dish of the night. It was so tender and juicy. The mash potatoes that it came with was super smooth and hearty. The drunken rib eye was also very delicious. The only complaint is that it was incredibly charred- to the point where it was a bit on the burnt side. In addition, the drunken rib eye came with a lobster bisque. The first few tastes of the bisque was good but then it got too heavy. It was too saturated and thick after a couple of bites. Other than that, the meal was great! read more

I have been gong to going to Great American Restaurants since they opened. I have had friends and family work there and in past years I would say any of their restaurants were best bang for your buck, quality food. However, the last 8 times I have eaten there whether it is Mike's, Sweet Water or Coastal, the food has been lacking. Service has still been decent but food not so much. Last week, took my family to CoastalFlats Fairfax...ordered fairly standard fair as it was later in the evening, 2 orders of the fried fish ( they had run out of tarter sauce) and the fish was soggy (inedible), my boys ordered burgers and the heel of the buns were soaked through because of how greasy the burger was... ordered fish tacos as well, very little and soggy fish which mounded with a cup of slaw on each taco (basically Cole slaw tacos). Sad to see these restaurants quality go down hill. I keep giving them a chance in hopes they will recapture their better years because it was a top choice for years. read more

I've been eating at this Coastal Flats for 10 years now...back when they still served food on colorful plates (not sure why I'm writing my review just now). I moved out of Fairfax about 5 years ago, but EVERY time I visit home, I always make a pit stop here. There's always going to be a wait. All I can say about that, is that it's worth it. The service is pretty much impeccable (unless they're training someone new), and the food and drinks are delicious. What I like most, however, about Coastal, is not the service or the food - it's the CONSISTENCY. As soon as I'm seated, I ask for the bread basket ('Ozzie rolls only please') and a glass of Cab Sauv (or a mojito, if I'm feeling fun). These rolls are essentially donuts, and that butter is to DIE FOR. Then, when the waiter/waitress comes back, I order the Blue Crab & Shrimp Fritters (it only comes with 3 pcs, but you can ask them to throw in an extra for a small fee, if you're in a group of 4). I've had almost everything on the menu, and that's the best appetizer, for sure. After I crush these fritters, I order my entree. If I'm feeling healthy, I order the Mango Chicken & Spiced Pecans Salad. If not, it's a toss up between the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes or Grilled Chicken & Havarti Cheese Sandwich (with a side of Mashed Potatoes or GA Fries). And to top it all off, the life-changing Bread Pudding (and I'm not even a dessert person). In closing, I hope this restaurant never closes down and that I'll be able to bring my kids here one day. I've gotten this dish before, but this time it seemed way saltier than others. The chicken was a bit dry as well, as if it was a little over cooked. Our waiter was very accommodating and attentive. Can't go wrong with a great American restaurant. Tried the crispy two noodle shrimp salad today and it was amazing. By the description you wouldn't know that there are crispy wontons and soba noodles. The shrimp taste so good and are a decent size and many sprinkled throughout. Very filling salad! Also got the warm flourless waffle which comes with a scoop of ice cream - so good and the chocolate oozes out from in between the waffle. Wednesday evening, traveling from out of town seeking great lobster rolls. Great location, nice atmosphere, service was exceptional, recommendations well noted. The crab and shrimp fritters could have been a meal, presented nicely, sauce and crispy outter shell and not soggy inside. I would definitely recommend. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because the Lobster Roll was just ok. Plenty of claw meat but the mayo mixture just didn't have much taste. The grilled corn on the cob was the highlight of the plate, skip out on the fries. A decent find if you're dining alone if you opt to get a table away from the bar. read more
