They have a gorgeous balcony looking over the bay where you could see the docked Navy ships, jet skis, and boats cruising along the water. For an appetizer, we got the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp came in a large glass. There must have been 15 good sized shrimp in there! They were cooked well, but I think the cocktail sauce they were swimming in could have used more flavor. The app came with a side of tortilla chips, that had an OK crunch to them. For entrees, we go the steak quesadilla and the tacos mixto. The steak quesadilla came more like separated tacos. You took a fresh tortilla and sliced up some meat and added some vegetables and you got a...quesadilla? I prefer them more like tacos because the steak was incredible tender and flavorful. Overall, my mixto tacos were pretty good. The shrimp was really good, the pulled pork was nice and tender, but I thought the whitefish was a bit overcooked and dry. Giving this 4 stars only for the lack of food entrees they had. Nothing really appealed to me and was pretty expensive. BUT... I had there coconut margarita and it's the most amazing drink I've ever had. I would return just for happy hour!!! My party decided to just get some appetizers to share so we got the ceviche, queso and house made guacamole!! Everything was delicious. How could I forget about the view?! It's unreal. Let me start by saying that first impressions are everything. I thought I made my reservations for Saturday evening, but made them for Sunday evening. The poor girl at the front kept asking me what my name was and I kept repeating myself. A guy who looked like a manager was next to her typing away on the computer. He finally breaks in to our conversation to notify us that our reservations were for the following night. OOPS!! He then says they will get us in and has transferred our Open Table reservation, so we won't lose our points. After a short ten minute wait we were seated. A+ for customer service!!! :) We asked to be seated on the patio and it is absolutely lovely out there. The view was amazing and the atmosphere is great. Kudos to the Cohn Group for another beautiful restaurant. Our server took our orders without rushing us, and we were able to sit and stare at the San Diego skyline and the fireworks going off in the distance...wow! We ordered the table side guacamole and also had chips and salsa. The salsa is almost a pureed consistency and had a great flavor. The chips were awesome too and seemed to be made from fresh tortillas. So yummy!! I ordered the carne asada plate, and my husband had the carne asada quesadilla. We also ordered the white corn soup. Our server came out with two soup bowls and told us that the white corn soup was not a full serving because they had run out, and she brought us another small bowl of the tortilla soup to make up for it. Another A+ for customer service by our server! The white corn soup is so, so good and has some crispy leeks on top...I had to stop myself from drinking it out of the bowl. The tortilla soup is good too and has a slightly smoky flavor. Our meals were good too, and the carne asada is a skirt steak that is served with a avocado salad, beans, rice and corn tortillas. I was stuffed by the time the meals arrived, but managed to eat about half my meal. We ordered the churros just to try them out because so many other Yelpers had recommended them. The chocolate and caramel sauces are really good and the churros were warm and covered in cinnamon sugar. Mmmmmmm. I would definitely go back and sit out on the patio. We had great service, and our food was better than we had expected. Absolutely loved this spot during our trip to San Diego recently. Gorgeous space on the waterfront, massive restaurant, with multiple bars, grand open views and very spacious seating. We were all very impressed by the location, the construction, and the friendly staff. I can see why this is quickly becoming a go-to spot for locals to get Mex-Fusion food and drinks. - We had group guac, chips, cheeses, and salsas to start with and I couldn't shove the great food in my face fast enough. - I had some kind of watermelon, fruity margarita and it was huge and I loved it. - I got a combination platter with an enchilada (with a very chocolaty mole sauce that was OUT OF THIS WORLD), a verde chili burrito with chicken, and a stuffed chili that was pretty damned good by itself. To say I was super full after this meal was an understatement...totally fat, and happy. I had to call an Uber Black to find a car big enough to haul my ass to the hotel after this massive lunch feast. We all (party of 8) loved the food. Honestly it was a better meal than the wedding we attended 2 days later...and we didn't wait long for our table, thanks to the reservation. We had great hosts and servers. Had this place bookmarked for a while, while trying to make reservations for a couple weeks we finally were able to get one. Every Saturday for weeks was booked so we were happy to at least find an opening on Sunday. My boyfriend and I came on a Sunday at 5pm, the parking lot only has 2 small rows of available parking. Which of course was all taken, the rest of the huge parking lot was for valet. We pulled up and decided to do valet ($7-which they can add to your bill). The views from this restaurant are breathtaking, the decor is also very nice. I was surprised to see how large the outside patio was, so we decided to sit outside. We were immediately brought over chips and salsa (delicious salsa), we also ordered a side of guacamole which was very spicy! I ordered the Nobel margarita which was a let down, I wasn't a fan of it and for $16 it was very small. I finished that within a couple sips so then decided to order the strawberry sueno hoping I would like it better. We started with the ceviche which was excellent! Our waiter was very friendly and treated us as if he knew us. When we were ready to order I got the carne asada and lobster and my boyfriend ordered the combo with carne asada, quesadilla, and tostada. Our waiter told him if he could suggest something else for him because "the tostada is horrible" and he wanted him to enjoy his meal. He suggested the carne asada, quesadilla and avocado salad. He said with that you get more meat, more quesadilla and the salad is very delicious. So my boyfriend agreed to get that instead, since we have never had a waitress tell us what he planned to order was "horrible". So we trusted him... My strawberry margarita comes out and it's delicious! Better than the Nobel in my opinion. Moments later our food comes out, very fast. The carne asada was perfectly cooked and we both loved it. My lobster was average, could of been more tender. Overall I loved my meal and I thought the avocado salad was very delicious as well. My boyfriend also enjoyed his meal but unfortunately wasn't a fan of the salad, the quesadillas on the other hand were the best quesadillas we've ever had. We decided to order desert our waiter once again told us "the only thing worth getting is the Churros and the butter cake". Since we had already planned on the Churros we decide to get that. Came here early evening on a weekend to beat the crowd, also got lucky enough to snag a free parking spot. I had tried to make a reservation earlier but they said that the reservations (for inside) were full but they did not take reservations for the patio. When i got there it all became clear, there were not very many tables inside 2 or 3 maybe, the vast majority of the seating is patio seating. I started with the Ahi tostada, It looked beautiful; raw seasoned ahi, topped with cabbage slaw, avocado, spiced tortilla strips, and peanuts. Basically an ahi poke tostada. It was delicious; the tender, flavorful ahi, had a great textural contrast to the tortilla and crispy cabbage. For my Entree i got the Mar Y Tierra (surf and turf) Braised short rib on top of a lobster risotto cake with mole sauce and topped off with a lobster claw. The short rib was super soft and tender, OMG so good with the mole. Not to many upscale places offer mole so i jumped at the chance to try Costterra's version of it, and im glad i got it. The risotto cake didn't have a very strong lobster taste to it, i think it was lost a bit in the wonderful mole sauce which was not a bad thing at all. The risotto cake had a nice crisp exterior and was delicious and provided great contrast to the soft tender short rib. The piece of lobster claw meat on top was a little bonus it was soft and tender and perfectly cooked. I'd order this dish again and again. For dessert i had the coconut flan, the flavor was spot on nice delicious caramelized sugar and coconut flavor. The texture was dense and creamy, i prefer mine a bit softer, but thats just a personal preference and I'm nit picky about flan so go ahead and order it! It's delicious! Despite the delicious food, the reason you come to Coastearra is the VIEW! Its got to be The best view of the San Diego sky line! The other might be from the top of the Hilton or Hyatt or which ever bar that is that gives you a view of the bay. But as far as being right on the water and overlooking the SD skyline this is it! The layout of the restaurant is perfect, all the walls are interior and hide the kitchen and prep area, and all the exterior barriers are made of glass so that you can take advantage of the beautiful view. The space has a very indoor/outdoor feel to it, like someones covered back patio. Don't forget about Deb's coconut margarita, $7 during Happy Hour. It was not as coconutty as i imagined, the drink still held on to its margarita backbone it was more lime with a hint of coconut. Most of the coconut flavor came from the salted coconut dusted rim which was delicious and made the whole drink. Definitely a drink worth getting. The parking is 95% valet, there are a small handful of spots to the right as you enter if you're lucky enough to snag one. Other than that its $5 vallet during lunch hours and $7 during dinner hours. Don't be discouraged by the fact that the reservations are almost always full, because there are no reservations for the patio which is 95% of the seating so its pretty much first come first served. There is also an area around the back bar which can be reserved for private parties, its a nice open space and i could see this as the perfect space for a small wedding or some event where you'd want a nice view. read more

Went for lunch with a friend this past Saturday for the first time. We were greatly disappointed with the food snd service. The chicken tinga empanadas were good but the yukon potato flautas were cold inside and too spicy for us. The poblano chili burger was okay but not great. I asked our waitress for mayo since I did not like the chiplote aioli but it took about 15 minutes to get it and that point the burger was cold. Our waitress was Alex and she was not attentive at all. It took her a long time to come by our table to see if we needed anything. We asked her for water refills and we waited over 15 minutes. I had to get up to go the bar and ask for water. The water is served in small glasses so they need to come around often to refill which did not happen. Alex also took a long time to get our bill to run our credit card. We got up to go the restroom during this time since she was taking long and when we returned to our table it had been cleared even though we left our jackets. Not once did our waitress apologize for any of the inconveniences. A bachelorette party was also seated by us which was very annoying as it got very loud. I made a reservation through the open table app about a month before coming in to Coasterra, and I definitely recommend it as it can get very busy during dinner! I made the reservation, and made a note that it was my friend's birthday we were celebrating. Upon arrival, we immediately got seated by our hostess for our reservation and she asked whose birthday it was, which I thought was super cool that she had recognized that! We had a beautiful outdoor table that overlooked downtown San Diego. Seriously, if you come here you have to get a table outside because it is a breathtaking view! For a drink, we both ended up ordering the Strawberry Spritz which had strawberry infused aperol, prosecco, soda water, and rhubarb butters. An aperol spritz is my typical drink of choice when going out, so I really loved that it was strawberry infused and was very light. As an appetizer, we got the guacamole which was amazing house guacamole that was super fresh. I thought it was the perfect dip for their crispy tortilla chips that were very thick and sturdy. For dinner, I ordered the ancho chili roasted salmon that came with quinoa, asparagus, a little cucumber salad on top, and Pasilla cream. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the it was just the right serving amount to leave me full. The quinoa was flavorful and was even better when mixed with the cream. My Fiance and I went with a couple of friends before San Diego went into the purple teir, so we were able to sit outside. Eventhough it was freezing cold, the heat lamps they have outside made it feel like it was 70°. This restaurant is cautious about Corona and I feel like they took great measures to make sure we were safe.The tables were 6ft apart and seating was only available outside. We waited an hour and a half for a table even though there were plenty of empty ones. We ended up only having maybe 40min to eat since it was that close to closing time. The table staff were friendly so at least it was better than our initial impressions. Tableside guac - Decent flavor with a lot of lime, but relatively one note. Asked for medium spice but got less than mild. Fish of the day - Light but could've used more seasoning. The simple salt would've been fine if it had penetrated into the center. Normally I don't like too much salt, but this could've used more. Meanwhile, the potatoes were extra salty. The other veggies were just there and not very cohesive. Butter cake - This was highly recommended by multiple staff members and other tables so we had to try it. The cake was like pound cake that was overly sweet. The plantain ice cream was good. My date unfortunately got bird poop smeared on the back of his shirt from the chair he was sitting in. We split a marvelous kale salad with compressed strawberries, pears, coconut and a surprisingly delicious addition of mint. It was really very flavorful and a split portion was still enough to satisfy. We had the sangria which had a cold mulled wine quality. My family took me here for my birthday. And I must say, what a great way to spend an evening. The view of downtown and the waterfront is absolutely gorgeous. We arrived right before sunset. It was incredible seeing the orange glow of the setting sun reflect off the downtown skyscrapers across the harbor. To start off the night, I had some specialty cocktails. First on the docket was Pilar's Cache, an amazing blend of citrus and different liquors. Next was a Papa Boracho. I also had a sip of my sister's Morado Fizz. All libations were delectable. Then we came to the main course. I opted for the Enchiladas de Mariscos, a seafood medley of scallops, sea bass, and shrimp tucked nicely in enchiladas and smothered in a creamy smoked Pablano cream. Delicious. The shrimp was especially tender. Everything was cooked to perfection. My birthday dessert was excellent as well.
