We did walk-ins so it make sense for the long wait. It's more than an hour, even several group that wait after us got seated before us. My sister in law walked to talked with receptionist twice. When it's 35' before the restaurant close, they finally call us in. The reason they gave us is they're short in staff even though there're so many empty table and so many servers running around. But it feels more like we get this treatment because we're this all Asian group with kid. Our server was professional and attentive. The food is good and fresh but nothing amazing. For the price they have, it could have been better. Definitely not worth the long wait and the aggravation. I think a lot of people choose the place is for the view to the city skyline. The dinning area is pretty dark for photo taking if you dine at night. We ordered app of the mussels and clams and it was standard, nothing special for me. Scallops ($44) with the pork belly , gooseberries, hominy and those juicy small tomatoes and the radish. 11/10 would eat again. Drinks were standards my cocktail tasted watered down. I got the something Collins, I can't remember because it wasn't memorable. Banana buttercake ($12) hot damn this was so so so so so good. But I ordered Scallops & Brasied Bacon and it was mouth watering. I haven't had scallops like this before but it changed my perspective. Before moving to another state this was my husband and I favorite place to go for special occasions. At times even just to have a nice lunch date or dinner date on the weekend. We love the ambience to this cute water front restaurant. We always request outdoor seating when making a reservation. it's very relaxing not too formal (you can dress up or casual) which is a great balance. We loved this Coasterra so much to where we booked this place for our Rehearsal Dinner the night before we got married. We had 30 guest and they accommodated our party outdoor in one corner. We had 2 servers who were both attentive and great! (With months of reservation of course) I must point out the hosts that seat you are pretty snobby. I have not met one that is welcoming and friendly. All of them seem to be stuck up that does the fake smile and just sit you down. But, that does not stop us from visiting this place. Must get the margaritas! My husband loves getting the original one and I love getting the coconut margarita. The coconut margarita has such a great refreshing taste. For appetizer we always get the calamari which is delicious! We have tried... Crispy Masa Calamari- very tender and lightly breaded. The Jalapeño sauce with a splash of lemon is delicious. 10/10. Raw Oysters- dozen oysters was alright some tasted bad and some were not as cold- more like room temperature. Would not recommend 6/10. Quesadilla- Very oily and very cheesy. Do not recommend. 3/10 Mexican Chorizo Mussels & Clams- very flavorful I usually request for extra toast as I like to dip it with the sauce. The serving size is a bit on the smaller size 8/10 Mexican Paella- a mixture of seafood not much protein though. The texture is a bit on the moist side. I've had Paellas that were more crisp on the outer sides how I'm assuming it should be prepared. Flavor is delicious. 8/10 Whole Crispy Baja Striped Bass- this is a must try if you and your significant other like fish. You get a whole fried fish with a bunch of sides (rice/beans) the fish is lightly battered and fried. We love to just squeeze lime all over and eat it just like that. This is honestly good for 3-4 people. Grilled Pasture Raised Chicken- got this twice during each visit. The first time it was very dry definitely not worth $38. The second time my daughter ordered this it was undercooked/raw. I wouldn't recommend this option. If you plan on visiting Coasterra make sure you make a reservation in advance. The wait is around 2 hours on a weekend dinner. Coasterra will always have a place in our hearts when we visit San Diego. Side note: we have tried Coasterra's sister restaurants right next door. Island Prime- formal steak/seafood dinner it was okay. The ambience was very formal form what I could remember. We went here for one of our anniversary. The rib eye steak was your average steak you would buy at the Whole Foods market. Seasoned with salt and pepper. Requested medium for both steak came out to be well done. The sides were more on the room temperature side not fresh at all (mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese) 6/10 C Level- burgers and similar lunch menu to Coasterra (unless they changed it) it was alright. Their burgers were more on the room temperature side. Their French fries was not fresh. It seems as if they were sitting out under a warmer and you can tell if your a foodie like I am. 6/10 And the winner is... COASTERRA! It's a must! read more

For our actual dinner plates everyone ordered different food, so yes I had to try some of their food & boy was I impressed.. every dish that I tried was so good & some of it was food I never had before.. I had the steak dish with lobster & veggies on the side. We were there for a while so we kept the food coming, along with a few drinks.. I ordered myself a piña colada & loved it.. towards the end of the night we ordered desserts & that was definitely the cherry on top.. This restaurant is located in a perfect spot. It's not too far to walk to from the hotels in the area. It's right on the water so it is a great atmosphere and it's located next to two other restaurants. If you're planning on visiting, you should make a reservation as it does take a while to get seated, because they are typically packed. If you forget to make a reservation, there is a communal table that you can sit at if there is room or space available. The food portions were enough for me and my party to share and not order our own meals. We still ordered our own meals and then had tons and tons of food to take home with us. if you're looking for Mexican food, this is not it is a mixture or a fusion of sorts. Waiters there always ensure you have water. They refill it whenever it is low! This is a big green flag to me. Then, for the chips they also refill when you ask or they notice the chip basket is not full. If you're super hungry, you'll have to wait a while for your appetizers and then entree. So, just keep note of that. Food was alright. I got a steak for dinner, and my parents got the Mexican Paella. I asked for medium rare, and it didn't come out that way. Still tasted good, but the greens underneath the steak were soaked with butter or oil, and it honestly was not my cup of tea. I didn't eat it because I would've felt sick after. Being San Diego based I have had the pleasure of dining here several times over the years and the service and food is still top notch. Seated quickly outside on a sunny but chilly April evening and their well heated patio air made it so you never once thought of grabbing your jacket or switching to a table inside. Our server was attentive but not overly enthusiastic checking on us. Surf and turf quesadillas was spot on and a large size. I took a chance on the Moline Chilada, I'm not a huge fan of Molé cause it tends to be a overwhelming flavor, however chef Deborah Scott in my opinion did a wonderful job of keeping the flavor, but not letting it smother the dish. I'm definitely gonna be more inclined to order Mole in the future. Whether you're visiting from out of town or a San Diego native I highly recommended.
