Had a quick stop for lunch here. A nice little old-fashioned shop with lots of wood throughout. There is plenty of shaded outdoor seating if you're okay with the constant traffic noise from Chinden. Service was friendly and they moved through several people fairly quickly. I ordered the new black pastrami, which as I understand has some smoke on it to top off the rich pastrami flavor. I got the large sandwich (16") knowing I would take some for another lunch. I really like the foccacia bread - good body, not sweet, and full of flavor. Yeah, a tad pricey at $32, but it ended up covering 3 meals. I was a bit too full off of how much they put in 8" for work. Small chip bags and an apple come with the meal. Good experience. Both days the sandwich was made with thinly sliced pastrami. Meat was tough and stringy. Lots of bread and very little filling. Go to Arby's -- better sandwich and it won't cost $30. Yummy sandwich! I had the small chicken salad sandwich. Don't let small throw you off - that's really an 8 inch sandwich size! Chips and apples come with sandwiches. I also added a big pickle to my order, and it was delicious! They had a kids meal pb&j which was super nice for our kiddo. I had the French Dip and loved it! The sourdough roll was fantastic. Their chili was great! You most likely will only need a small sandwhich combo. Great local sandwich shop. I've been dropping into Cobby's for decades, clear back into high school at the Broadway shop. I do love love love a Small #16 to this day - best sandwich ever. That said, sometime back in the 90's they changed bread suppliers. They deny it, but it happened...according to their former bread supplier (this story was told to me in the 90s). The sourdough used to be 'heavier', doughy-er, tastier, and took some work to get through, but was top notch. The good The sandwiches are consistently good. Free chips and/or orange or apple with your meal. The meh I'll die on this hill. The bread was higher quality 30+ years ago. When it's busy, the line can move slowly as there is typically only 1 or 2 'sandwich builders' due to space restrictions. The bad - Nothing to report. read more

This place was highly recommended to us, the Rueben was delicious and big. Absolutely worth the price. However, the only complaint I have is they call them small, family, large. But it doesn't tell you what that means. So we ordered a large. Thinking just a large sub or something. Nope, I received 2! sandwiches. I only needed 1. 3 of 4 to-go orders incorrect. When I called to discuss that, I was told to come immediately back. I was already to my destination. I said very clearly that I was not available to do that. The manager asked me if I could come in in the next day or two. That was Friday. This is now Monday. I called to see if I could still come in in a reasonable amount of time and have them make it right. I spoke with the manager who told me that it was her impression that I was coming back on the same day as the original order and so "they had the sandwiches ready for me on that day" even though I specifically said I was not coming back that day and she offered me alternative solutions because I was clear that I was not returning on Friday. (If they did actually have them ready, and clearly I'd called multiple times then why didn't they call me if they really truly did make them again and thought I was coming?? - makes no sense.) I repeated our conversation on Friday At which time she asked me if I had come back the following day and then had I come back yesterday. Obviously the answer was no, and her attitude was terrible, which made me feel unvalued as a customer, disrespected and quite frankly angry. I just spent over 40$ at your restaurant and received 3/4 of my order totally incorrect and you are going to give me ultimatums and attitude ?? She directly lied, saying that they had the sandwiches ready for me to come directly back because I very specifically told her that I was not doing that. Food is expensive and I will take my money to businesses who value me and can make a sandwich correctly. My favorite sandwich shop in Boise. I'm a little biased because I grew up on it and worked there for awhile. The people that work at both locations are amazing. I can't tell you one bad sandwich here. It's all good. However, my go to is #3 on white with cheddar and everything on it. Love their salad bar too. They also make their own chili. Again, can't go wrong here. Some people complain about pricing but Cobby's slices their own meats and cheeses. Gets local fresh bread. It's not subway. You want a simple BLT that isn't full of a bunch of crazy crap for a good price? Try Cobby's. I've tried most of their menu items and my heart always goes back to the turkey avocado with sourdough. That was my dinner tonight. YUM! My tummy still growls just thinking about it. The bread is absolutely delicious! Always fresh, as are the ingredients. And there's always just enough meat in the sandwiches. I do not understand shops that stuff as much meat as they can into their sandwiches - I might as well go to a steakhouse! Cobby's does it right. I've come here several times now and I'm always sad to see how quiet it is. I don't think the community appreciates this family owned establishment enough. My husband and I were super worried they'd start closing shop completely after the Broadway location closed. I'm glad this location and the Chinden one are still hanging in there. Came back to town to visit family a couple months ago and Cobby's was on the must do list. I heard that it had changed ownership and was really looking forward to having a meal at my old favorite restaurant. Whoa! What has happened to Cobby's?? They used to get "The Best of Boise" award over & over in years past. Now? So many 1-star reviews! I wish I could say I was shocked but they are accurate. I was so disappointed with my experience. Excitement turned into utter disbelief! My sandwich was tasteless. The bread was stale. The vegetables were not fresh. The meat was barely there. I could hardly taste it. Cobby's used to have the best chowder in town in my opinion. Not anymore! It looked like paste and tasted like flour. I could not believe how bad the whole meal was! It was disgusting and absolutely not worth the ridiculous amount of money they charge. I couldn't even finish it. They are clearly using the cheapest ingredients they can find instead of the high quality they offered under the previous ownership. It wasn't just me. The man behind us commented, "Well, I just paid almost $20 for this crap so I'll eat it anyway but we are never coming back here". Yikes! The new owners had some really big shoes to fill and it has been an EPIC FAIL!! A stellar 45 year reputation is NOT going to save them from driving this historic restaurant into the ground! I remembered Cobby's as a really good sandwich shop, so when thinking about where to get a good pastrami sandwich, I thought I'd try it. Paid $27 for two 8" sandwiches, little high, but would've been okay if they were good. Bread was stale and really dry, they barely put any meat on it, or mayo and mustard. It was almost like eating a bread sandwich. The only bright note was the pastrami had really good flavor, if they would hand put more than a very thin layer of meat, and made with fresh bread, it might have been good. This place is a kind of no nonsense, no frills sandwich shop. They have all the basics you'd expect (ham, turkey, BLT, meatballs, etc), and every sandwich comes with chips and there's a complimentary salad bar. Decor is pretty basic. Kinda dark inside, wood walls, wood tables and benches. Looks like it used to be a dive bar at one point. Nothing much else to say here. Service was good... the ladies working the counter were funny and personable. Very nice to chat and joke with, and I have nothing bad to say about that. They were a delight. The food... not great. Not bad, but just not that good. Plain and uninspired sandwiches. Did they taste fine? Sure. Did they knock my socks off? Absolutely not. It was utilitarian food. Would I eat here again? Maybe? The original owners knew how a locally owned business should be and how to give great customer service. Thus why they were in business for over 45 years. They made sure their food was high quality and delicious. Unfortunately, the new owners do not deliver. The meat is a much cheaper substitute and the bread is stale. The once sought after homemade chili is a slick oily mess with little flavor. The staff was once friendly and happy to see you. The current staff is rude and unkind. We decided to share a large French dip (12 in sub) which is only meat and bread with au jus....we asked to add cheese. The baseline sandwich was $27 dollars...add 1.65 for cheese!!!!!! Seriously. Didn't think to look at prices until my wife asked if I saw them. You won't even find a sandwich priced like this in a New York airport.....this is absurd! I could have bought the bread and meat at retail for 1/4 the price, and even made my own fresh bread. Presumably they're buying at wholesale. I have been going to Cobbys for decades. When I asked a coworker if he wanted something from Cobbys, his reply was he would never go back. When I asked him why, he said they don't hardly put any meat on the sandwiches. When I got my sandwich today, one half only had two small pieces of meat and the other half had barely any at all. I would have took it back but it would cost me more in gas to drive clear back to the Cobbys on Overland to do it not including my time. I took pictures to post and show how bad it really was but do not see where to attach them. $14.30 for bread, a little taste of meat and a small amount of veges. So sad they have gotten this bad. Won't be going back. I will switch to Fat Guys Deli. Three times the sandwich as Cobbys. SO SAD! read more

Walking in you see menu boards, picnic table, a salad bar, and lots of nostalgic Boise Photos, which is an excellent touch. I ordered a big bowl of Clam Chowder and a trip to the salad bar. The salad bar was average, but the top-of-the-line kind of average. Whole Apples and Oranges, all the salad fixings, and an assortment of pasta and potato type salads. Consider this. $25.00 (after tax) for a large Turkey sandwich. $5.00 for a small cup of soup. $31.64 out the door for a sandwich and soup. Then ask yourself if it seems insane to pay $31.64 for a soup and sandwich? Yes it is insane. Then get asked for a tip by their point of sale... like "hey, do you want to get even crazier? How about make it $36.38 for a soup and sandwich" No thanks! Despite all that, the sandwich is not as good as it used to be if you remember cobby's under the original owners. One of the best sandwich shops I have ever been to. My husband and I are visiting Boise from San Diego and this place was close to where we were staying so we decided to check it out for lunch. It is a classic American sandwich shop- no fancy or weird ingredients- just classic solid sandwiches. My husband got the tuna, I got the Turkey avocado, and my toddler got the little sliders. We all LOVED the food. The ingredients are super fresh, the sourdough bread is wonderful, and you get many good sides with your sandwich like their amazing pasta salad done right. We would definitely eat here again. Very satisfying lunch! The staff were very friendly and I liked how 3 people were working at the counter (don't see that too much these days). I've been to Cobby's on a few occasions now. Most recently, we stopped by Cobby's for a celebratory lunch. The shop is set up so that you order at the counter, move down the line, then pay at the other end. I ordered a half turkey avocado with mac salad. One of my dining companions ordered a half roast beef and was given the choice of having it prepared cold or hot (nice!). My other dining companion ordered their half sandwich/soup lunch combo deal. The sandwiches were all solid, made with fresh ingredients, as was the soup and mac salad. On previous occasions, I've had their French onion soup, which is stellar. They offer fruit and/or chips with every sandwich order (whether half or full). The only chip choice, however, is basic lays (meh) and the fruit has never looked fresh or unbruised enough for me to partake--so, a nice offering, but poorly executed. The service is always friendly and, like all of the Cobby's locations, this location has a well worn cozy feel to it. One major downside is their prices, which are a bit high in my opinion (we always walk out wondering how in the heck we spent as much as we did). Overall a solid place to grab a sandwich, if you're in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my hungry way for it. read more

We have been coming to this Cobbys since we were teenagers. Always have loved their sandwiches, salad bar and soups. We were at D&B today so decided to have lunch. The interior of the place hasn't changed, which is equal parts nostalgic and concerning. The prices are way higher than we remember but if the food's good, totally understandable. Hubby had the soup (clam chowder) & sandwich (pastrami) - sandwich was fine but not very flavorful, but the soup was pretty bad. I had the soup (chicken & wild rice) and salad bar - soup tasted like flour paste and I couldn't finish the small portion I was given, and the salad bar was pretty good. If you're going for a sandwich and like lots of toppings that will add flavor to the tasteless meat, you're probably ok, but if you like soup, this ain't your place. Hugo's or Off Broadway are much better options. Service was good. I hope the owners are working on improving quality. read more
