Beware of this rescue. Unwilling to do the ethical thing on stolen dog they adopted out. Take a look at all the pictures I've attached below & you'll see the owner of this rescue refuses to help the real owner of a dog that was surrendered to a shelter & then to this rescue & rehomed without her consent. Dog is chipped & proof of chip & owner attached below. As soon as the owner(who is out of the country currently) found out Charlie her King Charles Spaniel was missing she did everything possible to find her furbaby & found out this rescue had her dog. Unfortunately, this rescue even went as far as have her daughter prove ownership of Charlie before finally breaking the news that Charlie had been rehomed 2 days prior & had "new owners" now as the "rescue" put it. The rescue refused to call the new owners of Charlie & explain the situation & remedy it. Why?? I'm sure the new owners would not feel right keeping a very loved member of someone else's family. And on top of all of this, Charlie's owner Deborah is a breast cancer survivor & Charlie was with her through her battle. Do the right thing & bring Charlie back to his rightful home. read more

When my cat died, I wanted a new pet and my husband put the kibosh on the idea of getting another cat. I wanted something small and lap-friendly. For a lot of reasons, cocker spaniels became the breed of choice (not yappy, but still small) and we were referred to the Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin/San Antonio by a friend with a great spaniel. The Cocker Rescue puts the dogs in a foster home right away, which means less exposure to shelter illnesses and more exposure to families and other dogs. They bring the available dogs to weekend meet-ups (mostly at Petsmarts around Austin) each week, and you can meet cute dogs. If you like them, you can bring them home for a sleepover. If it doesn't work out, you can return them to the Cocker Spaniel rescue. It took us a few months to find the perfect dog for us, but we could not have a more perfect dog. The Cocker Rescue was really helpful start to finish. I told them I wanted a small "buff" (blonde) spaniel about 1 year old and they delivered. Before going to a breeder, give the Cocker Rescue a try. They get beautiful dogs and puppies and these dogs need homes! Current owner of a spaniel. I am also a parent to two respectful kids that love their spaniel. We inquired with cocker spaniel rescue to adopt a spaniel. The rescue advertises that certain dogs available are "good with children" and in some cases described interactions of their fostered animals with kids. Filled out the lengthy application, informed my vet of a possible inquiry, denied with no circumstantial question due to me having children. This rescue group should be direct in advertising that they don't adopt out to anyone with kids. read more

They will not people with children under 7 adopt a dog. Overly selective and restrictive without even considering individual families. I wouldn't call it a rescue but a club of "philanthropic" perfect dog placements. read more

This place re-homed my friends MICROCHIPPED dog. If you have a new Cocker Spaniel who responds to the name Charlie, please return him. He is microchipped and I recommend taking him to the police. His mother is overseas at the moment and she and her daughters are fighting tooth and nail to get him back. Teresa Rudolph and others at this facility are angry with the rightful owner. They emailed her saying the "new family" will not be notified because they're good ppl. Listen, accidents happen. Charlie was taken with out permission, turned in to the rescue and his owner is currently living a nightmare from thousands of miles away. You and your faculty think you're saving animals but in this case, Charlie was a well taken care of dog and you know it!! I'm sure if the owner could go back and change things, she would. The kicker here, she's a cancer survivor and gets to return to her best friend GONE. Unacceptable. Her daughters provided proof of ownership and tried to get Charlie back. The owners of this facility are embarrassed and don't want to contact the new family so they're asking Charlie's mom to get over it. Wow. read more

They gave our dog away to someone else. We passed the home inspection and put a deposit down on a dog and were told doing so meant it was ours to adopt yet they gave our dog away to someone else and only told us about it afterwards. They need to be more honest and forthcoming and have a disclaimer saying we can take your deposit but will feel free to give your dog away to someone else without telling you. We had to schedule three at home inspections because the woman told us she was on her way and would arrive shortly then an hour later asked to reschedule. She did that twice. Cocker Spaniel Rescue is the BEST! They are very conscientious about caring for dogs that come to them. These dogs are very often not well cared for when they arrive. They often need surgery which, due to the cost of vet care the previous owners cannot afford or there may be a death or divorce in the family. CSRA arranges for the surgery and/or shots and pays for it. They then find foster care where the dog is socialized and trained so when they are adopted, the process goes smoothly. I can't say enough about the devotion these volunteers have toward rescuing dogs. Dogs, like people, are often traumatized by the sometimes drastic changes in their life and it can take some time for them to adapt but patience, treats, grooming and lots of love will give you a friend for life. read more

Very UNPROFESSIONAL, rude, and judgmental. My application was immediately denied explicitly because of my status as a student. They made assumptions about my finances, time, and availability entirely based on my status as a college student and not the rest of my application (which reflected my wholesome status and preparation to take on a dog). The denial email detailed how I was not fit to adopt because I am "too busy" as a college student, despite the organization not knowing how many hours of class I am taking or my lifestyle. Additionally, I would expect a dog rescue to understand the difference between a service animal and an ESA, but they did not. I wouldn't even bother applying because you will just get a lengthy email telling you things about your life that are stereotypical, inaccurate, discriminatory, and judgmental. Also, some of the positive reviews are from people who work for CSRA, so beware of misleading positive reviews. read more

As much as I would like to recommend this organization, I CANNOT. Following the illness's of my little Cocker, SARAH and Chihuahua, POQUITO at 15 [who both died on me months apart last year] I adopted a pure bred blue roan Cocker Spaniel [JAX] from rescue. On paper he should have been a tremendous dog but in reality this dog had significant BEHAVIOR problems. When he was given to me there was NO home visit and once I realized the problems with dog the foster refused to return my calls. SCREW YELP Now these two dogs LANGUISH in fostering, there pictures on their site longing for a PERMANENT, LOVING home and practically UNADOPTABLE. I believe Cocker Rescue has an agenda which is not in the BEST INTEREST of the rescue dogs. While I wanted a dog from rescue, I am now going to a Cocker breeder. I became involved with Cocker Rescue of Austin / San Antonio after moving back to Austin last Summer. I have rescued cockers in my household and I wanted to see if I could help. I have worked in small dog rescue for nearly 2 decades and I have to tell you that I have never seen more integrity and heart in a rescue group. Many rescue groups will not take on elderly dogs; but this group has many Senior dogs in its care despite the fact that many are unadoptable and have extensive health needs. Many rescue groups limit the number of dogs they can rescue by the number of foster homes; but Austin Cocker often has 5-10 dogs in paid care (vet or day kennel) ar a cost of $15 per day waiting for the right foster or adopter to step up. This group will step forward and let you know every known issue you may encounter with a dog you adopt, and will support you extensively post adoption.
