Coco Donuts was recommended to me over Voodoo by a local but as a first time visitor I had to hit Voodoo first. If I'd tried Coco's first, I probably would've skipped the kitsch of Voodoo altogether. Coco's maple bar wins, hands down. Also, their Lavender hot cocoa made my day! Super friendly staff and no one was hurrying you along because of the cattle stall lines outside. I think of these as traditional donuts, well executed. I disagree with the reviewer who said Coco's are the same as from a grocery store... I've never had a Coco donut that was raw in the middle, had runny icing, or tasted like chemical additives. I also wouldn't compare them to Blue Star (highly artisanal) or Voodoo (novelty). The apple fritter is my favorite. It's constructed from strips of dough instead of being dropped in a big blob, so it's light and crispy and always cooked through. Sometimes I'll have a lemon or jelly filled, but the fritters are where it's at. Yum! Prices seem to have crept up a bit since I first came in a few years ago, but they're still reasonable. read more

Donut is pretty average. Not a lot of unique flavors. The lavender donut is tasty but feels like a standard glazed with lavender flavor on it. The dough is okay and better than a lot of places but clearly this place is a step below the big boy donut stores here. At least their prices are cheaper. read more

Stayed on the same block at the Hilton Executive Towers. My Portland friends and most others recommend Blue Star donuts and of course Voodoo (except one local friend who said she prefered COCO's). I'm not a true donut lover, but I do like an occasional fritter. Hands down my favorite apple fritter I have had the pleasure of biting into! I'm not 100% sure how they make it, but I think the batter is piped into its shape as opposed to being plopped down in a big organic mound. It's my uneducated bakers experience that the piping gives an airiness and allows for the reason I love the fritter.... that crispy exterior with soft and sometimes slight gooey middle. Kids of course loved the cake style donut and traditional chocolate glazed with sprinkles. Stand in line at Voodoo just so you can visit a cornerstone establishment of PTown, but don't miss out and get a fine donut without the craziness at COCO's! read more

OK, I panned Voodoo as the Kim Kardashian of doughnut shops. Now it's time to give credit where credit is due. Coco Donuts was superb. The employees were glad to see us. We first stopped by one afternoon and the selection at this satellite store was limited. They suggested we reserve a donut for the next morning, because they went fast on Fridays. Imagine that--they offered to reserve us our choice of donuts. And then they did! And the staff was friendly at helpful at all times. The next morning we arrived for our donuts and ordered drinks. The mocha lattes were great, as was the lavendar tea latte. The donuts weren't over-decorated, thickly iced things with Lucky Charms scattered on top. Nor did they look like anybody's genitals. The ideal donut = Coco's buttermilk donut. I walked into Coco's on a lark and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of donuts. The shop is small, cute, clean, AND they have fabulous donuts. I ordered the buttermilk and sugar donut. I had read about the lavender donut; however, at 10:30 AM they were already sold out (so I assume they are quite yummy, as other Yelper's have written). I chose the buttermilk as the lady said it was another popular donut. I have had many sugar donuts in the past, so assumed this would be a great way to taste-test so-to-speak. The buttermilk donut was delicious! I easily could have eaten another. The donut was moist, a tad fluffy, with a light glaze on top, and very very flavorful. The round sugar donut was fluffy, like a standard donut (this was not a cake-donut) and had the perfect amount of sugar on the outside. For a truly good, honest donut, visit Coco! read more

I recommend this place to my friends and family because I know Coco donuts won't let me down. My favorite is the maple bar, but make sure you wake up early to grab one before they go! Wow! Dream come true. I used to go out of my way to pick donuts up at the SW 17th location. Now I can stop by on my way to work, or when I run errands at the bank or when I'm shopping around the area. This new location is perfect for showcasing Portland's REAL BEST donuts. Soft, fluffy, fresh, decorative, simple and not too sweet. They serve local Portland coffee that's always fresh. Ian who's always at this location is one of the nicest guys you could meet. I'm allergic to eggs. The server had no idea what was in the donuts. Most of the time I can have regular donuts and not cake donuts. This server told me everything had eggs in the ingredients. To bad for me. Maybe get an ingredients list put together for people like me. read more

This place has the best donuts I have ever eaten. Their raised glazed is the perfect mixture of light and fluffy, and comforting and filling. The first 3 times I went there I witnessed people being given free donuts or discounts for no reason other than that the people working there are nice. The ambiance is very friendly as well and the coffee isn't bad either! Their donuts aren't quite as dense as Voodoo's but still leave you feeling full without a stomachache. This cute little shop was shown to me after my sad experience at blue star. I needed just a normal fluffy donut, and this place was perfect. I got a simple maple bar, a jelly filled and a milk all for $3.50. There was some confusion between the guy and me with the jelly donut. I wanted a powdered raspberry filled donut and I got a glazed instead. When I pointed it out he very nicely switched for me. When I went to dig in.... I realized the powdered donut was filled with lemon. I gave that one to my taxi driver because I didn't want to just toss it. Soooo I don't know how their filled donuts are, but they look good! The maple bar, however, was great. The dough was light and fluffy. Not heavy or greasy at all, and the maple flavor was perfect. The quick milk shot after was the cherry on top.
