I was looking for a little coffee and donut love one sunny afternoon, and wandered into Coco Donuts. The shop is perfectly sized, and had an array of donuts to display. The guy who took my order was friendly and talkative, and another guy came in after a break a few minutes after I arrived. The first guy then had to ask the second for help because he didn't know how to work the espresso maker... Which I'm pretty sure should be part of basic training if you work in a store that is half-coffeeshop? I had tried the maple glazed donut at the main base in Goose Hollow before, and picked a chocolate glazed with Christmas sprinkles to take to my S.O. I ordered a regular mocha and a salted caramel latte as well. The maple glazed donut I will say without doubt was the best maple glazed donut I have ever had. Bar none. Wonderfully light donut and it was pleasantly sweet. Please try it if you're a maple fan like me. Now for the other half of my order...The coffee was strange. I don't know how to describe the flavor, and am not sure if it was because they use a different type of coffee grounds, or the shots were off, but it was just strange. I thought at first that I liked it, but I'm pretty sure that it was the salted caramel syrup that I was into. I did end up drinking the whole thing because coffee, but it definitely became more unpleasant as it cooled down. The mocha had a sort of similar flavor, so it was definitely something about the coffee, or possibly the milk that was throwing me off. I do love that they include a donut with the coffee, because the two work like miracles together, but this coffee should not be had without. So while I know I'll be back for donuts, there's too many places nearby that make a stellar first coffee to take chances on a second try here. read more

I got the raised lavender donut and a soy lavender latte (can you tell I love lavender?). Both were amazing. Service was quick and friendly. If you're looking for somewhere to sit however, this is not the place. The donut and latte were delicious though. I would definitely go back. read more

Okay I am a donut Snobb!!! I have tried donuts all over the country and I will admit this is one of the best tasting cake donuts I have ever had. I seriously like the chocolate on chocolate. The chocolate icing is mild and just sweet enough not to over power the flavor of the donut. Small shop and friendly service. A must have! I know that Voodoo has kind of conquered the donut market here in Portland and the lovely donut I had a Coco makes that a real shame. They aren't going for the weird or loud market, Coco definitely stands on the value of its donut. That being said, my donut was delicious! It didn't feel as heavy as a normal cake donut would make me feel and yet it was still as chocolatey. If you see the shop downtown, definitely give them a try! You won't be disappointed. read more

How refreshing. These donuts were better tasting than the competition, more reasonably priced, and without the stupid long lines at the other places. Every flavor was rock solid. Loved the chocolate and coconut flavors, lavendar, and pumpkin spice too. All big winners for some of the very best, if not the best, donuts in Portland. 4.5 years since updating this review. I'm going to resist the urge to say you know what "flies." We all have that figured out. Perhaps the young clerks at Coco had not had their coffee yet last time I visited in December 2012. All is forgiven. Today, I had a wonderful young clerk who was just the right amount of friendly and had good service ethic. My iced coffee was so perfect. Well I think, they have the best donuts in Portland, they frequently run out of inventory. It seems like about half the time I go there during lunch, there's no Donuts to be found. Today included. Coco Donuts offers the classics in the best and most delicious way possible. All of their donuts are wonderful and it's always difficult to pick. I actually like their donuts more than Voodoo, because Voodoo's are just too sweet and difficult to eat a whole one. Coco gets it right. When it comes to pink box I rather have Coco than the Voodoo any day. It is less sugary and made to tease the eyes with its classic selections or delicate color and texture. I go in for morning coffee and donuts before early class to nibble on during lecture. Sometimes it so popular my old fashion or chocolate almond is sold out, only thing missing is crueler. Donuts I think can sell themselves sometimes but if you need convincing here goes...try one. :) Glazed, giant cinnamon rolls, maple bars, buttermilk, and lavender are some of the flavors that your taste buds will thank you for. These have always been soft and fresh as a donut should be. I usually pick up a dozen or so of these treats for the office since I don't have to wait in line like another downtown donut shop. Also because I can go in and ask for a dozen and let the staff choose what goes in, they do a fabulous job of giving me at least one of everything! The shop is cute and quaint. There's no real place to hang inside, but if you are enjoying a donut you don't need much time or space. I always enjoy the wake you up music playing inside. They do serve coffee to enjoy with your warm fritter but I have not tried any. So do stop by, but be sure to go early enough that they have a good selection. I brought these babies into the office and I was the most popular girl there for the short duration between placing the box down and total donut demolition. I had noticed Coco Donuts because of their cute exterior.Inside is just as great, with modern simplicity as a design focus. The donuts are the shining stars of this establishment (and they are excellent), but not to be overlooked is their coffee and espresso drinks. Lavender lattes top my list of guilty fancy coffee drink indulgences and Coco Donuts does my flowery beverage no wrong. Also, drinks are served with a donut hole. Yesssss. We frequent this donut store for work events and other "just-because" occasions in my office, so that was my first experience with it. I went on my own and was really pleased. They're efficient (no waiting on a cash register, they have an ipad on a track-pad, it's pretty neato) and EXTREMELY polite (at least in my experiences) which would probably keep me coming back even if the donuts did suck. The donuts though...they're perfect! They're so fluffy and flavorful, but not fluffy like Krispy Kreme (which isn't good) I only docked one star because they're kind of expensive just for a donut. Great coffee and the best donuts I had in Portland. The toddler and I were on our morning walk around downtown Portland, and I'd set aside Coco Donuts to try, as donuts and coffee are typically a part of our morning tradition. For donuts, I took: lavender, chocolate coconut cake and regular old fashioned. I ended up with a regular chocolate coconut donut after the server and I got our signals crossed. For a drink it was impossible to pass on a salted caramel latte. These donuts were the closest I've had to the Doughnut Vault in Chicago. The old fashioned donut was light, with a crumb that held its shape but was tender when you bit into it. The lavender donut wasn't assertively lavender, but I definitely tasted it in the frosting. My favorite standard, the chocolate coconut cake, was likewise similar in texture but with a chocolate cake base. The frosting was more of a ganache, and the amount of coconut just right. It's what I expect a coconut donut to be. The bonus donut, the regular coconut chocolate-frosted donut, was nice and soft, even 2 days after buying it. The dough was well rested and risen, with a good yeast flavor. And to top it all off, the salted caramel latte--mmm. The Pacific Northwest already raises the bar for coffee, but this cup had just the right amount of sweet and saltiness to complement the coffee. I wish I'd gotten it again the next day! Coco Donuts was one of my favorite places to eat in Portland, and I'd heartily recommend it highly for someone who's looking for a great donut and less of a line. read more

I'm not a huge fan of Voodoo, I don't understand all the hype but COCO DONUTS I LOVEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! I think it's because they taste like a Krispy Kreme donut. I tried the lavender donuts a few times, and I don't really taste the lavender, tastes like a normal glazed donut. Mmmm, donuts... I couldn't resist getting some donuts from Coco Donuts after walking past by them and seeing the awesome assortment they had. I got a simple glazed donut on my first visit, which was light, fluffy, and everything a glazed donut should be (but really though, if you screw up a glazed donut, you shouldn't be in the donut business.) My second visit though, I decided to get devil's food donut and a lavender donut, which really intrigued me! The devil's food donut was chocolatey and perfect, and the lavender donut was very similar to a glazed donut, but you get this nice and subtle hint of lavender in the end. I really wouldn't think of putting donuts and lavender together, but they work amazingly well! They also roast their own coffees, and I tried their regular coffee, which was pretty good. I did see that they had a lavender latte, and if it's similar to their lavender donut, then I definitely need to try that. read more

I work across the street and Coco has been my goto morning coffee+thing pickup ever since Kettleman's went the way of not actually making bagels anymore (Einstein's). Very good donuts, the coffee is good, and about my only complaint is Friday mornings tend to see sharp declines in the available stock, assuming because they are so popular. In particular try the glazed buttermilk and the old fashioned, these are a notch above the raised ones in my opinion. And for all the nerds with fancy phones, they're pretty hip to Square and the "pay with your face" system, which makes the morning stop super convenient. read more

The doughnuts are really good but if you get there late in the morning, my son & I arrived at 10:30, most will be gone, so the earlier the better. I got the cinnamon mocha which was excellent! I was debating on giving this place 3 stars because of the location, along the bus lines & they have no chairs to sit on but the doughnuts were really tasty so I give it 4. This is a donut shop and they are consistently OUT OF DONUTS. I stopped in today at 9:30 and there were 3 donuts in the case. Three. I was told they would be getting a delivery "in about an hour". Sadly, this is not the first time this has happened to me at this location but it is definitely the last. In fact, I was told during a previous visit that I should have gotten there before 8:00. I don't care how good your donuts are (and, honestly, these donuts are very, very good donuts), I am tired of their FU attitude. My bus stops right in front of this place every morning on the way to work and I've wanted to explore the sinful delights within for some time. Today I had a little extra time and ventured into the hot pink slice of heaven. I wasn't in the mood for a super sugar rush the first thing in the morning so I ordered a croissant. It was perfectly golden brown with a light and fluffy interior. I pulled it apart for a taste. It had a slightly buttery and nearly melted in my mouth. Three or four more bites and it was sadly gone. That was the best croissant I've had in recent memory. I can only imagine how good the donuts are and I'll be back to find out. The only down thing I can say about this particular location is that they only had donuts and croissants. I like a full range of choices in my breakfast pastry. Excellent experience while I was living in Portland. If I'm looking for a solid doughnut to fill my daily regime, this would be it. I'll spare the comparisons to other doughnut shops in town. Service is great, as it should be, for such a small little shop. Flavors are on point and ingredients seem to be fresh made, every day. I'm particular about doughnuts with anything artificial inside. I love Coco Donuts. I love all donuts, and my test of all donut places in the basic glazed old-fashioned donut. It needs to be light, not heavy dough, with a subtle, not too sweet flavor. The glaze should be light and both tender and slightly crisp, and the glaze should also absorbed into the dough a little, but not too much. The glaze and dough should compliment each other in perfect balance. Coco Donuts makes one of the very best glazed old-fashioned donuts in Portland. Test number two of any donut shop is the apple fritter. Although not a traditional lumpy fritter, Coco's knot/twist style fritter is delicious, and passes the critical visible pieces of apple criteria. Did not get a chance to go to voodoo donuts as suggested to me but I'm glad that I tried coco donuts anyway! Very close to the hilton where I was staying. I had lemon filled and chocolate with coconut flakes. I am still craving them now. Yummy! I decided to take a different route on my walk to work today...and there it was in all it's glory...Coco Donuts. I love me some Voodoo Doughnuts, but sometimes I just want straight up doughnuts...nothing silly. I have not even taken a bite of my coconut cake donut and I already know it is going to be delicious. There was only 2 people in front of me at 7:30am, and it was a quick transaction. Coffee is good, no idea what kind...but it is good. Ok, I just took a bite and I was right...delicious! So is the plain, no glaze Old Fashion...Yes, I ordered two. The man at the counter was SUPER nice and not bad to look at either. I am so glad I took a new route to work today!!!! Coco donuts is my favorite donut place in Portland, they have a great variety of awesome tasting donuts. The donut selection changes from day-to-day, which I'm a fan of as to get me to try new flavors/types. They're reasonably priced. I'm not a fan of the decor inside but thats just my personal taste. The house coffee is great and has great flavors that make it easy to enjoy black. The staff are hands down outstanding, I left my wallet at home one visit and they gave me my $6 order for free. I came back the next day and they wouldn't let me pay back my bill. I of course just tipped the charge. The staff makes me feel welcomed and happy to be there. I saw Coco on the map and decided that I would try it out and it was the best decision I made all week! Sometimes you just need a doughnut and this place is a cute shop, they have several locations but this was closest to me. We called ahead to get two dozen and thankfully we did because they were sold out when we got there! They were really light and fresh and not overly sweet.
