Katsu curry is such a comforting dish. Ever since Curry House closed all locations in the Greater Los Angeles, it's left a void for me and my friends because we were regulars at the Weller Court outpost... It was nice to finally try CoCo Ichibanya in Torrance. We were in the area after a long day and headed to check-in to a hotel nearby. We went to order take-out. Parking lot was packed with this and other busy businesses in the same plaza. Take-out orders are done via a tablet that's straight ahead when you walk in. I believe there's also a QR code that can be scanned that will take you to their app to do the same. Immediately to the right when you walk in is the waiting area. To the left is the host/check-in station. It was very busy on this Friday night. Many people waiting to be seated and just as many waiting for their take-out orders. We had to wait for at least 30-35 mins for ours. It felt like longer. I went with chicken katsu curry ($19.30) and added an extra chicken cutlet ($6.31). I was starved by this point in the night. It was good, it was a lot of food but it hit the spot. I just went mild with the curry and it was perfect for me. The extra chicken cutlet broke da mouth and I couldnt even finish all my rice. The pickled radish on the side is a nice palate change. The lady went with a chicken cutlet curry ($19.30) but added gyoza ($3.75 ea) + a vegetable croquette ($3.12). She liked her order but too much food for her to finish. The gyoza was good and the croquette was good size. The curry they use is tasty and it was exactly what we were looking for. Their to-go containers are clever, sectioned off and secure sealed plastic behemoths. It's solid and I hadnt seen one like it. It's deep to hold all the curry and rice. I'm a fan of how they did this. We liked Coco Ichibanya and would go back again whenever in the area. Staff was friendly. The wait was just waay too long that night. Finally got to try this restaurant after having it bookmarked for a while! They have plenty of options for what you want to add curry to, and you can also choose your preferred spice level, which I really liked. You order everything directly from the tablet at your table, which makes the ordering process pretty easy and convenient. My husband and I were both happy with the choices we made and would definitely get them again. There's also a good amount of seating inside, so we didn't have any trouble finding a table. Coco Ichibanya is my spot whenever I'm craving Japanese curry. I've been here many times, and even visited in Japan and am glad to report it tastes identical. This visit I ordered the Chicken Cutlet Katsu with cheese. I usually get it with Level 1 or Level 2 spice, but I went with the regular version this time. It was still delicious, but I definitely think the added spice makes the curry even better and is how I'd recommend ordering it. Ordering is simple since everything is done through a tablet at the table. The servers can sometimes be a little difficult to flag down, but every table has a call button that lets you notify them when you need something. It's a great system and makes getting help quick and easy. The ambiance is plain but the amazing smell of curry and the food are the main attractions. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, so it can get busy and there may be a wait during peak dinner hours. If you can, I'd recommend coming a little before the dinner rush and the wait wont be too bad. We arrived as a party of 3 on a busy Friday evening and waited about 20 minutes to be seated. After our order it took about 15 more minutes for our food to arrive. Quick food turnaround with a very customizable menu! The curry was solid but the fried food was the star. I think the spice level is achieved through a pepper powder, and while I regularly eat spicy foods the level of acidity and grainy texture made the experience unpleasant. The curry here is rich, comforting, and incredibly customizable, which is exactly what makes it so addictive. I love my curry a little on the spicy side, and the level 2 or 3 plus spiciness is absolutely perfect. It has a great kick without overpowering the flavor of the curry itself. I truly do not understand how anyone even attempts a level 10, but more power to them. The food is consistently amazing across the board. From the wide variety of protein choices to all the add ons you can customize your plate with, everything tastes fresh and satisfying. This was a 3 overall but for the food itself, I'd give it a 4. We came as a group of 3 including myself, waited about 20-30 min which wasn't too bad considering the timeline. This place was a 3 overall because the service was honestly nonexistent for us. My friends always had empty water cups. Trying to get their attention doesn't work so I had to stand and go to them. The bell button did absolutely nothing for us. I had to stand and get up to ask for more water, our appetizer was missing, and then the check, which was at some point getting inconvenient. Ambiance is just ok. For the food itself, we all got the chicken curry katsu but different spices levels. I got the same but with cheese and it tasted the same if I had gotten it without cheese; it was not worth the extra pay for the cheese lol. The chicken katsu tasted very fresh and delicious with the rice and curry. But it was a bit disappointing because compared to most places I've been to, the chicken katsu here felt small compared to the portion of the rice and curry given. My wish has come true! Coco Ichibanya is FINALLY offering any of the Omelet dishes for take out! Story time: During the pandemic, Coco Ichibanya was only doing take out. I was so bummed that I couldn't order the Omelet because they only offered it as a dine-in item. Then on May 14, 2021 (I have this story saved on my IG! Lol), I was finally able to dine in and order the chicken cutlet omelet! It was a beautiful sight! Lol. At least now I have peace of mind that if Coco Ichibanya ever goes back to take out again, I'll be able to order and enjoy the omelet still. But my other go to is the chicken cutlet curry udon and it's also really delicious. And of course can't go wrong with the regular chicken and pork cutlet. for spice level, If I'm feeling daring, I'll get a level 5 or 6. If I don't want my butt burning in the morning, I'll get a 3. Man, let's just say, stationed in Japan for 2 1/2 years this place was like Gold, the quality of the Chicken to the spice of the curry was splendid, once or twice a month never disappointed. Unbelievable the level of consistency in the quality of the food being served. Got back to the states, this location was a must but sadly over time you could taste the difference in the food. The highest I ever got was a 6 and it packs a good heat. The spice level goes higher than that for the adventurous folks. Menu is easy, a lot of customizable options. Nothing special but will get the cravings satisfied. Chicken was nicely crisp, and the curry was a lil more watery than how I would normally like it but the flavor was there. Boyfriend ended up getting a regular spice pork omelette cutlet and did enjoy the flavors as well. Regular spice is good for people who have a low tolerance while level 3-4 is more of a kick. I'm not sure why this restaurant even has a tip option. The workers here aren't servers. They are just runners and hosts. They only drop off the food you order yourself on a kiosk. They don't come back and check on you or ask you if you need anything else. Why do they even get tips? To be honest, we always tip AT ALEAST 18-20% wherever we go and support local businesses and small restaurants. However, our last visit made me rethink about this place. Come to think of it, we have always tipped but they don't really do anything. The place hires young workers and these kids just don't really tend to the customers. They just take your order, and drop off the food. THAT'S IT. So there's really no point in tipping. It's like ordering at the counter and seating yourself. Picking up the plates afterwards is easy work for them. The kiosk also doesn't even work. We've tried to use the machines a few times before and it craps out at the end every time after placing all the specifications, which wastes a lot of time. We were here a few days ago and the workers here are clueless and don't know what they're doing. It's just a bunch of young people working here. We asked for a table and pointed at the back for a table of two against the window and one girl snapped and said it wasn't available. Another girl came out and offered us the table I originally requested and we told her the other worker said we couldn't get it. She looked confused and went to go check. All of a sudden the first girl then said "oh I thought you meant the other table in the back". I told her no we are a party of two only why would we need the big table in the back. The miscommunication is that these workers don't even comprehend or care to make sure what we needed before assuming. Beef was solid in a really bad way. Didn't even look like it was stewed in anything other than boiled water for 5 minutes. Just shaped rice with a the omelette was dry and basically a scrambled egg thrown on top. If you think you're getting that omelette rice you see online in videos from Japan, or even like the one on the menu you are in for a big surprise. The curry portion on my $20 plate was so small that I had to pay an extra 5.50 in order to eat the remaining rice with extra curry. The plate is raised in a way where you can pour a lot of curry in there. The cooks are obviously trying to skimp on portions. Service was slow. One gal took our order and never came back. Like I did not see her the remaining 20 minutes I was there. Didn't bring my extra pork cutlet or curry. I had to ask the other gal to bring our food bc the other one forgot or had bubble guts. The cutlet was mediocre but not as bad as the rock hard stew meat. I will never come back to this place and would advise ppl to stay away. I get the Beef & Vegetables Curry. We really like their salad. It is a green salad with corn & egg. Their sesame salad dressing is so tasty, too! They bring a squirt bottle of it and you can add the amount that suits you. If you're thirsty, they sell a Jumbo Thai Tea for just $4.49! We usually get one and share it. Service is hit and miss. We were looking for a good curry place in Torrance since our previous favorite went away - they were there then gone. Somebody recommended this place and it looked like a clear winner on a Sunday morning. We were among the first in and seated promptly. The interior is very modern and neat so that was good too. A server came up to us quickly and we ordered - might have been a bit slow to order since first time. Mine was katsu curry and partner's was a bit more complex. Our food was pretty low to arrive with mine being first. My partner's dish came about 20 minutes after mine. The food is good and we weren't being singled out as the table next to us had to wait longer than we did. Their food was so late somebody felt the need to say their next stop was LAX and they were concerned. It seemed a kitchen thing - other tables filled and left before food for the other table arrived. Maybe our served was on the #2 list for some reason. I'd try it again but if the service seems slow try to bail out while you can. read more

Love love love the Japanese curry here. You can choose the spicy levels. The mild is perfect for me. Not too spicy but it still has a little kick. What surprised me is that you can request how much rice you want. Cheaper for lesser. Parking is plentiful in the same plaza. read more

TL;DR: careful with the heat - decent quality curry I like that there is complimentary barley tea in the waiting area for when there is a wait. Small things like this really go a long way for the customer experience and it's very much appreciated. Generally enjoy spicy food but even a 5 was too much for me. I ordered the pork cutlet with egg and side of veggies. While the overall dish was good, after the first half of the plate, I couldn't taste anything other than spice. This place is super popular, I came on a Friday around 7ish pm & there was a couple parties ahead of me. By the time I left around 9pm, there were still people waiting! Once you enter, there's a QR code to scan & be on the waitlist. There's bar seating (faster) or you ask to wait for a table (obviously takes longer). The food is pretty good, I think their curry is very flavorful & a good staple to go to. I got a spice of 2 & it was pretty spicy so I recommend to go lower if you can't handle spice too well. read more
