OMG. Banh Mi Coda, where have you been all my life?? Half way across the country, I guess. So this place totally blows the stereotype that New Mexico only has one food cuisine. I haven't had a banh mi this good ever...and I've had them all over the country, including California and Chicago. I had to stock up on the necessities so a trip to the Asian grocery stores was in order. As I was finishing up, I realized how hungry I was...so I literally stood in the Talin parking lot and turned around in a circle to see what my options were. The neon blinking open sign seemed to beckon to me and since there was a "grand opening" sign on the awning, I thought, What the hell...we'll just go for it. Now that I've read the reviews, I'm a bit confused because it certainly seems like it's been open for awhile! They offer banh mi sandwiches ($4.50, add $1.50 for double meat), smoothies (with optional boba) ($3.25 with an extra 50 cents for boba), pastries, rice noodles, some usual Vietnamese appetizers/dishes (~$4 and up), and Vietnamese drinks ($2.75) on the menu. You can even order the Vietnamese meats by the pound (~$18/pound). I ordered two banh mi sandwiches, the #1 and the #4. Okay, what can I say, I'm a total pig, I admit it. #1 is your classic banh mi dac biet made of jambon, headham, Vietnamese ham, and pate. #4 is the banh mi xiu mai which is basically Vietnamese pork meatballs. And I honestly can't decide which one I liked better...it's like asking a parent which child they love more. Both of them were made from the same kind of crispy, yummy, delicate fresh baguette, great on its own, but even better with the contrasting flavors that the fillings provide. I ate #4 first, and I appreciated it being a warm banh mi. The pork meatballs seemed to melt in my mouth, and its slightly creamy texture was sharply defined by the pickled veggies and the (hot-for-me) jalapeno perfectly placed in the middle. Basically, it was as if someone decided to sing and play O Fortuna inside my mouth. I saved #1 for dinner, and don't even let the maybe strange meats scare you off. It is...absolutely delicious. If you are at all a fan of meats, you owe it to yourself to try this one. If the first was O Fortuna, this one was Pachelbel's Canon as the fillings more complemented the meats than anything. I think my eyes rolled backwards on this one. And both of them had the perfect proportion of meats to the veggies with neither superseding the other. They don't have a website. They've also changed their hours and are open on Monday-Saturday from 830 AM until 7 PM and Sunday from 1030 AM until 430 PM. I can't wait until I can pay them a visit again. I have been meaning to add my review here for some time. I have brought several people here to expose them to the best food, not just sandwiches, I can find. Pate chaud made with green chili and chicken? Yes! Waffles? Not on the menu, but after seeing the waffle iron I had to ask. Tasty! Homemade tofu battered and fried with dipping sauce. Absolutely wonderful! Fantastic drinks, desserts, sesame balls, and of course, bahn mi. I am working my way through every sandwich. That means many more trips! This place is an incredible find in a less than diverse Asian cuisine community. They carry the traditional banh mi with ham, head cheese, and pate that have become uncommon even in places like San Francisco! The pickled vegetables are really fresh. The bread/baguettes are made fresh daily I believe but their cuts of meat could be better (often put through a microwave). But at their prices, much is forgiven. Service is quick and the staff is extremely friendly. They also have a GREAT assortment of other Vietnamese dishes (e.g. ch la served over bánh cun) and desserts. Again, a real divergence from your typical Vietnamese offerings of Pho and Bun thit nuong. Give it a try! read more

My husband and I stopped in for lunch today. He had #4, Vietnamese pork meatball sandwich, #27 spring roll, and Jackfruit smoothie. I had #3 Vietnamese ham and paté sandwich, #24 spring roll, and #51 Vietnamese iced coffee. Sandwiches were pretty good, though very stingy in fillings. I had barely any paté at all, seems as though it was forgotten. The spring rolls were way too heavy with mint, making it unpleasant. The #27 had decent flavor other than the excessive mint, but wasn't even as good as ones I make at home. The tofu spring rolls had no flavor of any kind, save for the mint, again unpleasant and overpowering. They were warm as well, which I thought was off for cold spring rolls. The dipping sauce was pretty good, a generous 4 oz portion cup. But it didn't make up for the flavorless tofu spring rolls. The drinks were very good. Quite excellent, actually. I love Vietnamese iced coffee, and this was really some of the best I've had. read more

I went straight here after being gone for 5 months - I missed my beloved pork and shrimp spring rolls, Viet coffee and coconut waffles, staples in my life. This small place is close to my house and being near Ta Lin, makes a convenient stop. There are so many strange things, you can try them all. The sandwiches, with fresh baguette - I like lemongrass beef meatloaf, but I think it's worth noting that if you don't branch out and try everything, you will probably miss something that you would love. While on a road trip, we stopped at Banh Mi Coda for a quick lunch on the go. I ordered a vegetarian tofu banh mi. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it turned out to be one of the best vegetarian banh mi that I've ever had. Not only that, it was gigantic! It was enough for two people. If I'm ever in New Mexico again, i'll definitely need to find this place again. It was worth the side trip. If you aren't familiar with the area which I definitely wasn't, the restaurant isn't easy to find since the sign is so small. Coming from a place where Vietnamese deli's wede plentiful, this place did not disappoint. Glad we tried this place out. Definitely was surprised to see banh cuong there. I love that stuff! And it was tasty! We also got a 12" grilled pork banh mi. It was tasty, but the bread wasn't what we're used to.. It was thinner and smaller than a French bread banh mi you would get in LA or Seattle. But over all it was good. I wish they had more dessert to choose from, but beggars can't be choosers. Ok so i decided to see what all the hype was about this place. fisrt off...i drove past it not once but twice! It's across the parking lot of Talin market (Another adventure/field trip) This tiny little sandwich shop was bursting at the seems when I arrived, well after the prescribed lunch hour. All sort of folks here, but as I was reading the menu board, I saw 5-6 different single peeps walk up to the counter speaking Vietnamese I can assume and grabbing rather large bags of food to go. I knew then this was going to be a great lunch. 12 different styles of Bahn Mi. I had to try the tofu ( pescatarian ). Wait let me go back.....the bread. Oh yes the basis of every great sandwich,the holder of the goods, the bread. Made fresh daily, white French baguette, crispy and light with just the right amount of chewiness to hold your choice of meat. Or in may case, no meat, tofu. The tofu was lightly fried and seasoned perfectly. Add a few slivers of seeded jalepeño, pickled carrots/daikon(?) and a mayo/aioli. Yes it was yummy The ice coffee was strong, sweet, and the perfect pick me up for the rest of the day. I also ordered the little sesame ball filled with sweet bean paste. I have no idea what these are called , but I love them. Not greasy at all crisp on the outside with the sweet nuttiness of the sesame to balance the creamy almost coconut taste of the sweet bean paste. Next time I go. This has to be THE best place for banh mi in ABQ. I've tried multiple items on their menu and all of them are great. Sometimes they can be pretty heavy-handed on the mayo/aoili/butter component so I usually ask them to go light on the sauce for personal preference. They also have some baked goods occasionally for sale and I have tried the green chile chicken in the puff pastry which is excellent- I usually scarf it down before I can even drive all the way home (I live less than 10 mins from here....). My only complaint are the prices- I'm used to paying $2.50-$3.00/sandwich in Houston with more meat/filling whereas these will run you about $6 per sandwich. Also they charge $2.50+ or something absurd to add egg to a sandwich - you can buy an entire carton of eggs for that price!!!!! I guess you can charge whatever when you have a strong monopoly on the banh mi biz. :) read more

We finally got to Banh Mi Coda today and it sure lived up to its great reviews. Simple, unassuming, but a real treat. Extremely friendly and professional staff. Clean and well maintained. The menu is focussed on 11 varieties of Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches, all on freshly baked baguettes which are spectacular. There are also great baked treats, smoothies, coffees and deli meats. I had the grilled pork with double meat and it was delicious. So many layers of flavor, nice fresh ingredients, hot, sweet, spicy, crunchy, all nicely held in that perfect bread. I tasted the meatball banh mi too, which was also really tasty. We ended the meal with a sesame ball pastry, which was outstanding. Be sure to save room for it! This place is definitely a find! The staff are wonderfully sweet people, and the food... oh, goodness, the food. I took the advice of the reviews and ordered one of the sesame balls, and holy yumminess! I could eat a thousand of those things. They are so darn good! We also ordered the tofu spring rolls, and, dare I say, they beat my favorite place in Washington! I was impressed. My husband ordered the #6 and was absolutely thrilled with his sandwich - I have never seen a sandwich that large disappear so fast. I ordered the tofu sandwich (#7) and it was almost perfect. Whatever sauce they used in the bottom of the sandwich was just a tad too salty for me. If it hadn't been for this one little thing, my review would be a glowing five stars. I've been looking for good banh mi since I got back from a trip backpacking through Vietnam, and this has been the best so far. I'm vegan so I had the banh mi tofu, and it was great. Gahh, I love this place. Living right nearby has been a blessing; walking over to pick up one of their fresh baguettes (made with just a kiss of rice flour, I think, for extra sweetness and crunch) or a pandan waffle (mindblowing) in the morning starts my day off on a fantastic note.
