Great coffee served by a small local business at the end of a pier, what's not to love. Service is a bit slow as the kitchen is tiny and only the owner works here most days. The coffee is great though and served in awesome hug cups. The pastries are pretty good too and she'll even heat them up for you. Cash only. Grab a table on the pier or one of the Adirondack chairs for a relaxing morning view of the yachts and harbor. My husband and I stopped here based on a recommendation from our daughter who lives in Portsmouth. It was a chilly, rainy day, but the coffee was tasty and the clam chowder warming. My husband got the ham quiche, which was awesome. The owner was working and was so sweet and interesting to talk to. We are from Maryland and will visit again when we return to Rhode Island. What a super little coffee joint! The owner was a doll, sweet as can be, so friendly when she's clearly working her little tushy off day and night. Right on the wharf, the location cannot be beat. Ample covered tables and huge adirondack chairs out in the sun, complete with wide arms the perfect size for setting your coffee cup down. My husband's cappuccino was delicious but my pumpkin spice latte was EVEN BETTER. (She even let me switch mid-order ... I'd asked for cider, she'd heated it up while making the cappuccino, but when I saw the other sign and asked to make the switch, she was more than happy to do so.) The baked goods all looked incredible (I'd intended to come back for some pumpkin bread or a scone, but forgot!) and the menu indicates they serve sandwiches as well -- I'm positively kicking myself that we gave into our hunger pangs early and grabbed something at Panera (which turned out to be totally subpar) instead of walking back up here. This is a cute little spot to enjoy a lovely ocean view. Unfortunately the frozen cappuccino I ordered tasted more sugary than like actual coffee, but I came more for the scenery anyway. Free water is available though, and the prime seating on the pier doesn't hurt like mentioned above. Yes, the view is nice. Yes, the woman behind the counter seems nice. But please know what you're getting into when you wander over there. This place is very, very pricey compared to other coffee shops in the area and their cold brew coffee is really just ice water with some coffee in it, and you can taste it. It's awful. The $5.87 for a "large" (which is really a small in a Starbucks), not including tip, was not worth it. Starbucks or kaffeology is likely a better bet. read more

Went for a mid afternoon coffee break with my husband while shopping in Newport. It was okay. His coffee was good. I got an iced latte which tasted more like iced coffee, but not good iced coffee. I didn't really love it. I also got a cranberry bread which was not great either. I ate a few bites but then tossed the rest. Not very flavorful. The views were awesome and it was great to sit and relax and look over the water. I didn't love the coffee, however. read more

Though the coffee is not the best I've had (I am a self-proclaimed coffee-snob), the atmosphere and the freshly baked pastries will make you want to come back again and again! Super cute establishment. The woman who owns it bakes all the treats herself, and gives great recommendations. I ordered the clam chowder, which was fresh and delicious, with a mint mocha (equally delicious!). My friend ordered the spinach and cheese quiche which was also great. Although the coffee is good, I was shocked and embarassed by the way I was treated by the woman who I believe owns the shop. I've been going for years, paying triple the amount that I should for a cup of coffee..but I've always enjoyed the location. I will now walk across the street to Starbucks. If anyone asks me where they can get a cup of Java I will send them across the street. Every year we spend the summer solstice week in Newport, and make a nightly trip to Coffee Grinder for expertly prepared espresso, sipped from Adirondack chairs while gawking at the 1% as they come in on their yachts and secure them in the marina. If you like Sambuca with your espresso as we do, stop at the Black Pearl's outdoor bar and pick up a serving of it - there is a sign that states you cannot leave the bar with your drink, but no one ever said anything to us - it's just a short walk down the pier. read more

I honestly have to say this is one of my favorite places every time I come to Newport! Their Mochas are FABULOUS, partly because they use good quality ingredients like hot chocolate instead of crummy Starbucks-like chocolate, chemically syrup (BTW, Stbx's mass-produced Mochas caused a HORRIBLE allergic reaction once, so I'll never get one there again!). Anyhow, Coffee Grinders is not only a cute little place, but is right on the water so you can grab an outdoor seat and chill out for a while. I also had a scone, which was terrific...lots of times scones are in desperate need of butter because they're so dry, but this one was yummy! (which obviously means the butter was cooked in...but it was still good!). The only possible negative might be the line can sometimes be a bit long, although not any longer than other good coffee shops. I highly recommend this place to anyone heading to Newport! read more

Alyssa operates this little gem of a coffee shop that's located right in the Marina overlooking Newport Harbor. We were so disappointed because the only reason that we even stopped in for coffee was because the freshly-ground coffee smell was so strong and enticing that we couldn't resist. Absolutely the worst experience I've ever had! First of all I asked for a large iced coffee and received a shot size cup with ice and when I said to the cranky miserable woman behind the counter I'm sorry I am for a large she proceeded to snap to yell at me saying this is a large! The coffee was weak and tasteless after two sips it was gone. I highly suggest going to Empire tea the staff is more friendly and the coffee is better.
