I'm happy to pay any price for an excellent cup of coffee and I don't think the $7+ they charge for a pourover is unreasonable. I will come back and gladly pay that a few times a week if they resolve the following quality issue I noticed. The coffee is too weak. I have enjoyed many expensive light roast pourovers in cafes and have also honed in my at-home process. It should not be so weak. The volume is too low. A to-go cup should be at least 75% full in my opinion. Felt like a cortado. Increasing both volume and strength may require more beans (the main input cost) and possibly hotter water. I'm sorry but they have to do something about this. Giving five stars to not be a jerk but my true opinion is like 1.5 stars! read more

Needed a place for an hour or two of work, so I stopped by here since I haven't been before. First off, packed at 10 AM. Only one seat available by the window. Didn't get to testing the in-house wi-fi but the Comcast was available nearby. I ordered a chai latte since that's just what I've been ordering recently when I've already had my morning coffee, and just need a little bit more juice to get going. Flavor was good-- nothing stand out about it. I love the natural lighting in here. The quieter vibe and soft chatter of folks around the cafe made for a nice environment for working. A quick glance around showed that a lot of the tables are bit on the smaller side, so as long as you don't need too much space or have too large of a group, this should be a great place for you. read more

The environment in the cafe is nice and spacious, and I think it's fine if you just want to get coffee of some kind in a clean space. But what was a downer was that the coffee wasn't good enough to make up for feeling like I wasn't welcome. Going in 45 mins before closing, without any laptop or even a book, they asked to use a to-go cup for my "for here" order because they're closing soon and don't want to wash a ceramic cup, even though there were plenty of people still hunkering down with half of their drinks and working on their laptops. Are you telling other people to transfer their drinks into a paper cup too? Not a big deal to use a to-go cup in itself, but the absurdity of the time and looking around with tables of people still absorbed in their work just made me sour on the place. read more

I love the minimalist design of the place! They have a limited seating area, so they don't allow laptops or tablets on the tables. They also have a good selection of pastries. Very simple inside, which is a good sign for a coffee shop. I tend to be cautious of flashy cafes that offer more vibe than quality. I had the German Fall Latte (on ice). It didn't disappoint. Came here based on a recommendation from a friend on my visit to Philly. The woman who took my order was not friendly lol. They had an interesting and semi-extensive fall menu; I was interested in the German toffee flavor. Asked if their syrups were made in house and she defensively responded that it depended on which drink I wanted to know about. I rephrased to ask which syrups were made in house and was told only pumpkin and banana, so I went with an iced banana latte. Wasn't impressed. Tasted like a slightly watered down latte with banana. This has been a highly touted coffee spot in Old City, and it lives up to the name of having one of the best matcha lattes in Philly. I visited during Saturday afternoon, so I was unsurprised to see it fully packed. There's about ten or so small tables, so come early if you're looking to study or stay for an extended time. My strawberry matcha was really well done, and I appreciated the staff asking how sweet when making it. Customer service was excellent, and I noticed the staff consistently keeping the space clean and their water refilled (which comes free). I definitely want to revisit and try a pastry next time! The Strawberry Matcha is probably the best I've had - better than ones you might get from a lot of the popular spots in NYC or SF. It's made with very high quality matcha from Japan and fresh strawberry puree (that's not drowning in sugar/syrup). The croissants here are freshly baked and have the perfect texture. Buttery and soft with a nice "stretch" to them and the right amount of crisp on the outside. They've been kind enough to heat it up for me every time I've had one. A relatively new and cozy coffee shop in Old City! One of my new favorite spots to grab coffee and a croissant! Atmosphere: I have noticed the shop is generally crowded on weekday and weekend mornings with people working, but I have been able to find seating every time. They probably have ~10 spots for seating indoors. They also allow dogs so I've seen dogs wander in a few times too. The staff is very friendly! The atmosphere feels very clean and Scandinavian / minimalist - the interior has white walls and mostly white furniture. Food / drinks: I have loved all the coffee we ordered here! The service is very fast and I love the cups that the coffee comes out in. I also find their pastries very tasty - their croissants are buttery and crisp, which I love! I usually wait a while to review, but my optimism around Coffee Zeit is getting the better of me. The owners are originally from Germany and wanted to create a space reminiscent of the coffee culture there. The coffee is wonderfully made to modern specially standards. Cortados are always my test when visiting a shop and they're executed perfectly at Coffee Zeit. Right temp. Nice texture. Balanced. Good latte art is a bonus, too! Both the single origins and the house blend were tasty as cortados, and I also had a shot of house blend that was great. They're offering pastries at the moment and we only tried a croissant, but it was a perfect compliment to the coffee. With a beautiful, minimalistic space, friendly staff, and excellent coffee in the realm of what we prefer, we'll definitely make Coffee Zeit a regular stop when walking through the neighborhood.
