We stopped here for a quick bite on our way to PA. What a surprise. The pizza here is very good. Crispy crust, ooy gooy cheese. Yummy. I had a slice of white and a slice of caprice both over flowed the paper plate. My husband had two slices of pepperoni. We tried each other's. I think the white was my favorite. My daughter had a cheeseburger. She likes it with nothing but meat and cheese so I don't know what else would have come with it. She ate every bite. The fries were the crispy kind. Yummy. Terrible Pizza! The place has has way too many tables for the room, giving it a very crowded feeling, even when empty. We started with garlic knots that were a bit plain for my taste. Then I ordered A Hawaiian pizza. What I got was an almost liquefied pizza. The toppings were way to big (im guessing pre sliced from a can) put on after the pizza was cooked, so of course they fell right off before i could even get a bite. Even all the cheese was pouring off of it. This was a total waste, I ordered a whole pie to take home, but i couldn't finish a single slice. Supposedly this is the "best pizza in Middletown", but the only way this could possibly be worse is if this pizza was served in a cup. I guess if this is "the best pizza of Middletown" you probably shouldn't eat pizza in Middletown. Server was very nice and place was cramped but clean. read more

I was excited to try this place as it gets great reviews on google maps, but while it wasn't bad it kinda fell flat. The place itself is like a basement rec room with all the wood paneling, and it is also quite sizable. Like Timothy said, its one of the last businesses still alive in the Caldor's plaza, which say a LOT for staying power. Originally I was going to get a regular slice, but they looked just okay and when the girl behind the counter accidently folded one over and I saw how limp it was, I changed my mind (it had decent char though). I decided on a margarita slice, but little did I know it was actually a pan slice with globs of cheese and sauce on top of it. It actually wasn't bad, but it wasn't something I'd order much less drive out of my way for. I might go back to try a regular slice sometime just to be sure I'm not missing anything here, but while this place isn't bad I wouldn't say its good either. For pizza in this area, my rec goes to Carbonella, the new coal oven place in the Big Lots mini-mall (yes they do slices). read more

Despite all the glowing reviews of Colandrea Pizza, I wasn't that impressed. The location, ambiance, and decor were all promising signs towards a quality slice. Framed pictures of Italy's 1982 World Cup winning team, panoramic shots of Florence and Tuscany, and wood-carved murals engraved with the restaurant's name. All the employees wore shirts bearing the restaurants name and the title "Pizza King", but I'm not so sure... The slice was just ok. The best part was the crust, which wasn't too chewy or doughy. The sauce needed the most improvement. It was just very bland. And the cheese, well, cheese is always good when it's melted over sauce and dough. My co-worker also ordered a side of garlic knots and was gracious enough to share it with me, but I'd almost rather he didn't .They were horrible. Stale, chewy, and were just sprinkled with garlic powder, rather than having an actual ingredient in them resembling garlic. Don't get me wrong, the pizza at Colandrea wasn't the worst I've had, it was just lackluster. I'd eagerly visit other pizza spots before this one. read more

I was looking for a small bite to eat and found this gem. I wasn't extremely hungry and decided just to get something small. I ordered a sausage and pepper calzone. When I picked it up, to my surprise it came in a medium size pizza box. The thing felt like it weighed five pounds. The calzone was still piping hot by the time I got back to the hotel. Back home, calzones are a little larger than hot pockets. This was no hot pocket!!!!! This thing was huge. After cutting myself off a section I took a bite. The taste was somewhat similar to a slice of lasagna. The sauce was tangy and somewhat sweet. A nice flavor overall. Not bad for the $13 I spent. read more

Simply the best Pizza in Middletown. When we first moved here we tried every crappy pizzaria this town had to offer. We finally tried Colandrea's and we haven't gone to any other pizza joint since. The dudes that run this place have to be hard core, they are the only remaining business in what used to be the Caldor's plaza. The entire plaza is run down, parking lot is full of pot holes but people still flock to this place for their pizza and other Italian goodness. The rent must be cheap or maybe they are holding out for the re-development project. In any case if you want good pizza, this is the place to go! read more

I am 43, grew up in Yonkers and had family in Parkchester in the Bronx so to say I have had my fair share of great pizza from within a 10 mile radius of NYC is an understatement. We have been living in Middletown since 1999 and sorry to say only recently tried this gem of a spot in the last few months. The food is ridiculous. I started going to Calandrea's Pizza when I was 4 or 5 years old (35 or so years ago). I've eaten a lot of pizza over the years, and nothing matches up. The one reviewer said he didn't try it because it was "floppy" and "limp". NY pizza is supposed to be limp at the end! That's the best part of it. When I went to the Orange County fair as a kid, we would leave the fair and get pizza at Calandrea's (their about 300' from the fair grounds). When my daughter was old enough to go, I took her to the fair and then we stopped for pizza when we left. The other reviewers already told you that this is the last place standing at this shopping center. Over the period of 10 years there must have been 10 chinese buffets next door. They are all gone! Caldors (the main store) closed their doors almost 20 years ago, and I left the area about 5 years ago and moved to NC. Whenever we go home to visit, we stop for pizza. This is the only restaurant that I miss from NY. You can find good food in most places, but you can find "GREAT NY Pizza" just anywhere. And no, that's not an exaggeration. The place (building) is falling down, but don't let that stop you from going in. The side door has been falling off the hinges for years, that's what gives it character. If you want the best NY pizza anywhere, take the drive and enjoy. read more

This is hands down the best pizza in the entire Hudson Valley. I'm an exTri-Stater who moved out to California many moons ago. Every time I am back on the East Coast, my wife and I make a point to eat at The Pizza King as many times as our schedule and intestinal fortitude will allow. Let's put it this way... I have loved this place for so long that I remember the Caldor 500 car races, the movie theatre, and of course, sneaky parking for the Orange County fair. All that time Colandrea's would pull in big business. Now, virtually all of that is gone.... Except for the Fair, which let's face it, ain't what it used to be. There are pretty much ZERO other businesses in that strip mall, yet Colandrea's is always packed when I go there. If that's not a testament to how EXCELLENT the food is, or how loyal their customer base is, then I don't know what is. I was very surprised by this place. I went in looking for rice balls but figured I'd try their pizza. I always get a plain pie when I try a new place because if you can't do the bare minimum then I don't care for the specialties. The pizza reminded me of my childhood pizza I grew up with. Delicious sauce perfect crust big slices. I got a regular riceball which was very flavorful. I definitely recommend getting one if you stop there. I also got a riceball parm which was good too but it didn't top the original. So all in all this place is a must try if your looking for a good pie. I have tried this restaurant out two more times from the first visit. I ordered the eggplant parm dinner the second time. Was a little expensive to me, $12, I've seen it cheaper elsewhere in Middletown, and the pasta was overcooked, but otherwise delicious. This most recent time, we shared a pizza pie, one half cheese, the other sausage and peppers. I was looking forward to this place after seeing the reviews. If you are in the plaza definitely stop it. It's not bad. Just not amazing. The inside was kind of cool with all the pictures of Italy. The staff were very friendly to me. The inside was pretty clean and there was nothing to scare us off when stepping up to order. Since it was pizza that was presented as being King, that is what we had. When I go to pizza places, my first time I always just get a regular cheese slice. The reasoning, if they can't get the basics right, why bother with the rest? It was good. It's a nice thin slice with the perfect amount of crust at the end. Where this review can change depending on who you ask regards the sauce. It was a sweeter tasting tomato sauce. It was good but I actually noticed it and I am not a culinary expert. It was a little too sweet tasting for what I wanted in my pizza. Someone else could give it a 5 star off the sauce, it really just depends on the person. When I was a kid my nana and I would get ham,cheese with lettuce and mayo and oil and vinegar and onions with mozzarella sticks every Saturday when I went to her house on the weekends . They'll heat up your slice and have it out in 5 mins and they usually have some garlic knots or a pinwheel out too priced pretty cheap. Sauce is unbeatable, crust is baked just right, and mozzarella and toppings are fresh. Call ahead for strombolis and calzones and subs. Also invite 5 more people to help you finish those calzones because they are enormous. Drinks and beers in a fridge and seasoning in the corner. Moved here in the past year and after trying around a dozen pizza places in Middletown, for the price, flavor, and location where do I always return? Colandrea's. I can say with confidence Colandrea's IS the pizza king of Middletown! If you happen to visit ask for a side of their marinara sauce, you'll end up drinking that thing like soup haha. I discovered Colandrea's a few years ago. Compared to restaurants in NYC, NJ and NY state (all other states are not even in the running), nothing comes close to the eggplant they serve here. The BEST pizza I've ever had! We go out of our way to eat here every time we're in New York and have actually driven up, from Delaware, primarily to get Colandrea's once before. I've lived all over the country and have never found anything that can compare.
