Ah Colita - I love you! This food is amazing, and the best part is the entire menu (excluding beer) is gluten free! We started off with the elote (of course), and it was everything I needed. It's cut off the cob and mixed up like a salad. Perfect to go with a dish or to have as a starter for the table. We also shared the Cacio E Pepe Stacked Tostadas. It was only one tostada so I would recommend getting more than one foe the table - it was cheesey and wonderful. I got the Shrimp Tempura Tacos which have a wonderful sauce in the bottom, good tempura shrimp, and lots of greens and cabbage. I will likely get these almost every time, I'm obsessed! We finished the night with churros which were 10/10. I had the Naked Dani #2 drink, and it came with a cute rubber duck. Our services was top notch. Impromptu visit to an excellent restaurant so we ate all the things! King Mackerel aguachile topped w an herbal salad and with crispy grasshopper: excellent flavors and texture combination! Ahi tuna tostada had such an excellent marinade on the tuna which was perfectly balanced w creamy avocado: tied for favorite dish w the lamb barbacoa which had such a Lovely tart sauce that highlighted the lamb flavor. Other things we tried included cacio e pepe tostada w a super cool hot sauce bottle, tlayuda, St. Louis style ribs, churros with caramel sauce and caramel cream, and a refreshing naranjita beverage! The charred eggplant was probably my favorite, but also would get again the elote, aguachile, tlayuda, and green tomato salad. The couple things we tried from the smoke section were just ok (pork taco, KC rib). Taco wasn't unique / felt like I could've had that at any other place in town. OVERALL: absolutely delicious! Just be prepared to spend a pretty penny here. ATMOSPHERE: First off, I just want to say they're patio is so spacious and well heated with heaters and fire pits! The indoor decor is gorgeous as well. DRINKS: the drinks need their own section this time because each of the specialty cocktails looked so delicious, but the one that I'm sure everyone knows Colita for is the Naked Dani that has the famous rubber duck! So cute, and the foam is pure sea salt foam (truly reminded me of the ocean but that's not a bad thing) and offset the sweetness of the drink itself. FOOD: we started with the chicken tinga tostada that definitely had some heat to it. Was so flavorful, but be ready to sip down some water! Next, we had the shrimp tacos which were my personal favorite. I love shrimp though, so I could be bias. There was a perfect balance of flavor! We tried the squash emoladas as well, which was good but not our favorite. Veggie lovers will most likely love it, but it needed another depth of flavor for us. We completed our meal with the churros! I wish it came with ice cream or more of the whipped foam but it was good. Nothing extraordinary though. Even after all of that, we left still a bit hungry. PRICE: the cocktails were $12 each, the tacos/tostadas are around $15 (for 2) and the churros we $12 (for 4). The quality and flavor was good, but the portions are a bit small for the price. Pro tip: you're able to add on another taco/tostada for $5 more which brings down the overall cost for each taco/tostada. For getting this much food and still feeling hungry, this is probably a spot we'd go to just for apps and drinks. SAFETY: they are one of the safest places I've been to so far. This place is like a dream! Make sure to get a reservation on RESY or through their website, because it is necessary to get seated inside. Without a reservation, if there is space you can sit at the bar outside on the patio or by the parking lot. I had a reservation for 5pm on a Tuesday and I was shocked at the lineup waiting to get a spot when they opened right at 5pm. We got a perfect spot, by the bar, right in the middle of the dining room, with perfect ambiance and a very photogenic area! We HAD to order the drink that looks like a bubble bath, complete with the rubber ducky! I had seen it all over Instagram & had to try it! It didn't disappoint and makes for such a cute photo-opp. We also got the tostados, basically a glorified quesadilla lol, but super tasty. Be ready to spend a pretty penny here, one drink and one appetizer was over $30, so I can't imagine how expensive a whole meal would be. So maybe when I win the lottery I'll be back - but a super cute place to try out! read more

Disclaimer: the food here is great, some of the best churros I have ever had. I have been here a couple times, however, the service here this night was subpar. I had originally made a reservation here on April 2nd, and we ate here on May 12 at 6:30. Our group of 4 walks in at 6:30, and we aren't seated until 6:45, despite multiple tables being open. we're finally seated next to the hostess stand and with one dirty chair. Very annoying considering the reservation was made over a month ago! And multiple parties with no reservations were seated almost immediately in a spot not constantly bombarded with people walking by. We came in to celebrate a graduation, and not once did our server ask if we were celebrating. Not completely needed but at such a nice restaurant, it's almost expected. In my past dining experiences here, they always asked and were welcoming. All in all, the food and cocktails here are great and super fun. The ambiance is nice (when you have a nice table), but the service tonight was very disappointing, and unimpressive for the price point. read more

Visited Colita for a birthday dinner and had such a great time! I've been seeing this restaurant pop up on friends pages for years and just never made it over until now. We of course started off with a round of the Naked Dani 2 margaritas. The guava flavor is perfect and the salt foam in place of a salted rim elevates the drink and makes it so much fun! Food was small plates/sharing style. My personal favorites were the shrimp tacos, eggplant, and tuna tostada! The Cacio e Pepe stacked tostada was yummy and the hot sauce dropped bottle was a fun touch, but this was definitely the heaviest of the dishes we ordered (super cheesy and good to split but would be a lot for one person if you ordered this alone). Our server was the nicest and gave us recommendations as well as a free sample of one of the fermentations, which was so delicious! This is definitely a pricier meal, but worth it for the atmosphere and delicious food & drink. The space is also STUNNING! There's a lot to love about Colita! Unique and flavorful food and drinks, top-notch service, and a great gorgeous ambiance. Colita is often very busy, especially during peak times. I highly recommend making a reservation! The drinks here are fun, unique, and delicious. Every drink I've had here is accompanied by an experience of sorts - served in a unique glass or bowl or even with a mini rubber ducky floating in your beverage. And while the drinks are great - the food packs some great flavors and is served "tapas" style, so choose a few to share (or not) and get in as much variety as you can. Pros: The service here is among the best I've ever experienced at a restaurant. Complimentary drinks at the bar and outside while we waited for it to open. The creativity in the drinks and food is worth the visit alone. The ambiance was the best of all the restaurants I visited during my 4 day weekend in Minneapolis (I love the wall made of plants behind the bar). Cons: Putting non-edible things in any food/drink item is a no-no. The rubber ducky is cute but, in my opinion, also quacky ;) After multiple drinks, we left this bar with no buzz. If you're looking for a place that serves strong cocktails, I would suggest skipping this place. The space looks like an old converted gas station, but don't judge the restaurant by its looks, once you get inside - or even to their patio you will find the space to be a very cozy and yet also vibrant atmosphere. Also, let your nose guide you, you should be able to smell the BBQ deliciousness before entering! Couple of items before induldging: parking - small parking lot so you will likely need on street parking. Reservations - you will likely need reservations as well! Now onto the food and drinks. We ordered the appetizer of guac, salsa, and 1 big chip! For 4 people? We had to order another big chip to share, so yes 2 large chips. The waitress never told us it might feed 1. Dining at Colita was hands down the best travel dining experience I've ever had. As I was tasting the first bite I thought, "Oh my god, I can't wait to tell everyone I know and come back and try more dishes!" Then I got sad realizing I live out of town. This was truly an incredibly delicious, authentic and hospitable culinary and cocktail experience. Not only was the menu mind blowing, but the service was impeccable. I was seated at a particularly busy time, and the staff made it appear seamless. I have some serving experience myself, and was beyond impressed with the poise, and service the personnel offered at every touch. This is not a place to snooze on. I only wish I was in town longer so I could try and savor every single dish and drink. I should also mention that I deal with a serious gluten allergy, and the fact that the kitchen is entirely gluten free was such a game changing experience. It was in and of itself a wonderful experience, but to tack on feeling comfortable and safe eating there? Bar none an experience I won't easily or readily forget. Got to me and my sisters birthday reservation 10 minutes early. It was for 7:45 but we weren't even seated until 8:10 and when we were it wasn't the patio as I requested on the reservation. They also don't do anything for birthdays, just so you know. I thought they might since you can select an occasion on the reservation. It's quite expensive for the small plates. The aguachile was delicious and so were the chicken tacos, those were my favorites. I didn't really like the cacio tostada, it was so bitter and there was just too much cheese. Wouldn't recommend. The drinks were very good and the salt foam on the margarita was a game changer. I would definitely be back for the apps and drinks. Not much else. read more

My husband booked this as a dinner for our anniversary weekend in MSP. It was one of the best meals that I've ever had and even better service. I'm not a big drinker, but they have a great NA beverage menu. Our server helped me pair drinks with different items from the menu. Fantastico! Most attentive, helpful service ever. Three girlfriends walk into Colita and have the best time! The food ...how do you make mouthwatering sounds in type? The drinks...inventive. But the service was top notch. So, these three ladies tried to make a reservation on a Wednesday evening, but no go. Booked until 9:30 or something super late. So we made a plan to meet at the bar at 5pm right when they open. It was a pretty good plan! All three or four of the bartenders we're extremely helpful describing drinks and dishes to help us narrow down our choices. I started with the laundry cake...a horchata and cucumber flavored number that went down quick. My lady friends got the Naked Dani a foamy margarita with a rubber ducky and the Puerto Rican Heartbreaker. Presentation is everything, but the drinks were good too! For dinner we shared the elote, tlayuda, and brussel sprouts. Get.them.all! But if you can only choose one get the tlayuda! It's like a bean crust pizza. (insert mouth watering sound) We ordered a second round of drinks. Papa Noel- not bad, a Five suns- eww gin, and the Colita old fashioned- my kind of drink, but a bit too smoky for me personally. We each chose our own tacos. I had the fish tacos which were good. We also had an order of shrimp tacos which were great. Then the lamb barbacoa tacos which were...wow! Oaxaca is now my favorite type of Mexican food forever. We got a lovely digestif shot. I haven't had one of those since I went to Hungary! For dessert two of us shared the churros (3 round disks) and the Panna Cotta. Both were delicious in very different ways. If you drive by thinking, where is the restaurant, there's just a gas station on the corner. That is the restaurant. A very nicely renovated gas station. My favorite part of the decor was in the bathroom with the black tile wall, very modern. The servers were all super friendly and patient, considering this was bookclub where we arrive one by one and talk too much and never get around to ordering. One friend ordered one of the nonalcoholic sugary drinks and she thought it was too sugary and they happily took it off her bill and got her something else. The menu is a little bit bizarre for my taste, some of it at least, liver, octopus, but I did end up ordering shrimp. It had very unique leaves to use as little taco shells. It was $13 for four regular size shrimp in a sauce with four leaves about the size of my hand. For free when we got there, they gave us one large chip of some sort with about 1 tablespoon of very good avocado in a bowl and 1 tablespoon of salsa in small bowls. Let's just say the portion sizes are small. I asked for bubbly water to drink and they just brought me a carafe of bubbly water for free. Since I'm 49 and feeling old, I must say that it was very dark in there and hard to read the menu (we were offered cheater glasses to help us!) and it was very loud in there and hard to hear my book club ladies. After coming back from Mexico City I had to try this place. (Don't worry I will write about CDMX restaurant reviews soon.) We made reservations on a Wednesday night and the place is packed and loud. It is kinda small inside. We had Tuna Tostadas and Seared Scallops for our beginning course. Tuna was very sour. I did not enjoyed it. But the scallops was very tender and delicious. I highly recommend that. Our main courses were Scottish Salmon L'Unilateral and Kansas City Pork Ribs. Salmon was perfect but the creamed quinoa that came with it was salty. I enjoyed the ribs a lot! Make sure to get a glass of Valle del Maule, Chile with the meat. Perfect combination. After dinner we sat the bar and had more drinks. I was happy they serve mezcal! I had Negrita and Colita Old Fashioned. Both did not disappoint me. Five Suns and Puerto Rican Heartbreaker were very good too. In additional to that we got free red wine and sample of mezcal. Bartenders are pretty cool! Atmosphere is awesome. Friendly staff and great service. This place definitely reminds me of Mexico City. read more

How cute is Colita! I loved the look and the story behind all the small details of the decorations to the story behind the influence of the food. All the staff was so knowledgeable about everything from the decor to the food. It was refreshing to have a consistent answer about the food from everyone we spoke too. NOW FOR THE STAR OF THE SHOW- FOOD 1) Cordero Tartare- I AM NOT A LAMB LOVER. I usually DO NOT LIKE the taste BUT this was absolutely delicious. It did not have that lamb-y taste if that makes sense. I liked it best with chicharrones but they were also great with the mesa crackers. 2)Spanish Octopus Tostadas- these were tasty, the octopus was cooked perfectly. 3) Corn Elote- it's a perfect by itself or as side dish. We ate it with the beef short rib. The roasted corn flavor is so delicious. 4) Bone-In Prime Beef Short Rib- this was ok we enjoyed it best with the cilantro and onion that comes with it. 5)Island Creek Oysters- Mmmm my favorite thing! It was great trying it in a different way. I definitely enjoyed it with the pomegranate granita. They also give you fresh horseradish that you can grate yourself which I thought was unique. 6) Tepache Ginger Bomb - Do you think ginger and automatically say bleh it's going to be too strong? That's what I thought but I have to say after trying this I'm really glad I didn't listen to myself. This drink is so refreshing and all the flavors blend so we'll together, it makes feel like it's a great welcome to fall drink honestly. 7) Housemade Mesa Crackers with Housemade Guacamole with Peanuts with Charred Tomatillo Salsa- this was so fresh and tasty I enjoyed it so much! Colita in general is a beautiful open space with great affordablely priced items on the menu. I'm so happy we stopped here I really appreciated the quality and freshness of the food to the awesome plant wall BEHIND THE BAR that is made of REAL PLANTS that water themselves to the cute pots and vases from Mexico and the originality that shows in their food and specialty drinks. Recently went here for date night, what a beautifully decorated space! They had a garage style open door which did not cause the restaurant to be hot and muggy. It was actually cool and comfortable! Our server was wonderful, she guided me to the right cocktail which wasn't too strong or sweet. It also had a cute little duck floating in it. Food comes in small plates, which I really appreciate we can try more dishes. All the dishes were great. The scallop dish and Tuna tostada was my favorite. Second time we've been to Colita, and once again did not disappoint. Everything from the tasty Old Fashioned, the main dishes, and of course the churros for dessert were fantastic. We've now tried a good sampling of the menu and have yet to be disappointed. It's an expensive evening out, but worth the splurge for sure. The only drawback is the tight seating situation. You have to be comfortable sharing your space and conversation with your neighbors. But, there is a quaintness to this environment as well. We will be back. read more

I wish we could take her to every restaurant with us. We ordered the Corn Elote, Scallops, and Masa & Guac to start. All were amazing. We then got the Lamb Barbacoa and Cochinita Pilbil tacos. I'm very picky about my Lamb as it tastes quite "gamey" to me usually, this did not, it was so good! I will say this is the best food I've had in the Twin Cities in a long long time! The drinks are amazing too! Kind of reminds me of the drinks we use to get at the Marvel Bar. To address a couple of the previous reviews I've read about price and portions I will say this. This is more of a Tapa's style. The price is on point for the ambience, service, but more importantly, the FLAVOR!! If you want huge cheap portions, stick to Perkins. Quick note, they add a 20% "Service Charge" to the check. It's basically a shared tip for the entire staff and to be able to pay a fair wage, which I think is fantastic. If you're so inclined to tip beyond that, which of course we did, you can only do that with cash. Psssst,,, if whoever runs this restaurant is reading this, please consider adding a Sunday brunch. Colita - Bruja Rodeo and Scallops - New American Near Me - Minneapolis, Minnesota

Colita has been on my list for a long time and I'm disappointed in myself that it took me so long to finally eat here, even if it was in a post-Coronavirus era. I kid you not, I had a reservation at Colita, the week after restaurants were shut down due to Governor Walz's stay-at-home order and I was so happy to reschedule the second night it re-opened, not to mention the outdoor seating area is great! Here are some thoughts and key points (sorry to write this like a report but sometimes that's the best way to get your point across): Post-coronavirus lock down opening thoughts: We went on the second night after re-opening and were lucky the weather was great for outdoor dining. Colita basically has the perfect setup with their outdoor patio, tables set up on the sidewalk around the restaurant and the garage doors that open and allow for fresh air inside in the restaurant. Masks (provided upon arrival) are required when you go to order at the bar and to the bathroom, there's sanitizer everywhere and their process works fairly well. There's an 18% service surcharge already added to your bill so no need to tip extra (which I did anyway) if you don't want to. Overall, I thought the food was great, drinks while a little pricey were good, and the service was friendly. Already planning my next visit but if you go, be prepared for a triple-digit bill (for two people). Food: hard to go wrong with anything but Colita might be best known for in-house made masa and tortillas and smoked meats. - Masa chips and guac: excellent starter and almost a must have dish at Colita. Masa chips are made in-house and it comes with three dips/sauces - gaucamole, guajillo salsa, and hummus, all of which outstanding. - Seared scallops: absolutely terrific and served on a corn puree that is delicious and needs to be bottled up and sold separately. - Lamb barbacoa tacos: hard to visit Colita and not get something off the "Smoke" side of the menu. I loved the smoky flavor and the lamb was tender and very very good. All of the tacos are served on organic Oaxacan corn tortillas that are hand ground in-house. Drinks: pretty much $13 across the board unless you opt for the 16 oz. bottled margarita, which looks like a good option. - Naked Dani: maybe Colita's signature drink served with a little rubber ducky. The drink is blanco tequila, lime, kombucha, seville liqueur and you have to love the foam where your duck can sit/float. - Papa Noel: I'm a vodka guy so great to have at least one option. Vodka, lime, co(2), tepache Bottom-line: very good and I look forward to my next visit. While prices are a little inflated after being shut down for several months (similar to almost everywhere), the quality, service and entire operation is great. There are a number of things I want to try (almost the entire menu) including the Tuna Tostada, Raw Spicy Salmon, Tempura Shrimp Tacos, Corn Elote, Fried Green Tomato, and the KC Smoked Pork Ribs. There is a small parking lot but might be easier to find a free parking spot on the street. read more

Colita has quickly become one of my favorite places in the Twin Cities. Their menu has changed a bit since opening, but many stalwarts remain and I've tried most of them. I have zero complaints about any menu items, but the scallops, elote and any tacos are always a must (the pork ones have been my favorite thus far, but that's only if I'm splitting hairs). The space is beautiful and I wish I had their living wall behind their bar in my living room. Their cocktail program is also pretty unique, as it has an emphasis on fermented ingredients. While their house Old Fashioned is a bit more bitter than I'd prefer (it was also advertised that way), they definitely know what they're doing behind the bar. Pre and post-Covid their service has remained fantastic, but more importantly, so has the food. Colita represents some of the best that the Twin Cities have to offer. read more

While the ambiance was nice and my cocktail was lovely, the food was quite possibly some of the most mediocre latin american food I have ever had. The "guacamole" was quite literally just blended avocado with lime and cilantro. The salsa was bland and lacked any spice, the beans were meh. The tacos had serviceable flavor, but at $11/taco, serviceable is not sufficient. The elote was honestly so mediocre, I question if the people making the food have ever experienced what actual elote is like. The chicken tinga was fine. Our server was wonderful though. This was my first time at Colita. I just ordered curb-side to go but even from the outside it smelled and looked wonderful!! They had spots in the parking lot for pick up which was helpful and some outdoor seating was available!! I absolutely lived the dulce de leche Churros!! They are so beautifully made and buttery and soft with a delicious caramely sauce and whipped topping!! I can't wait to return and try more of the menu items!! read more

My favorite restaurant in Minneapolis!. It's a mandatory stop every time i visit my sister and brother in law. Coming from San Francisco, I admit I'm spoiled and it's not always easy to find restaurants that surprise and delight, especially Mexican cuisine, but Colita delivers every time. Imaginative, delicious, seasonal small plates. Highlights this visit were the pork tacos, aguachiles, and the banana tres leches cake, although everything was delicious as usual. I was primed to expect authentic Oaxacan cuisine (which I dearly love). And a place to park not too far away on a cold winter evening. On the night we visited, Colita fell short on both counts. The parking lot is a joke. Parking on the street is possible, but the sidewalk in winter from the street down a short incline to the front door is treacherous. Inside, there is nothing to separate guests from the cold every time the front door is open. As to the food: most of the dishes we had were way too salty and the presentation left much to be desired. I may have been in a bad mood, but it's unlikely that we'll return. So my quest for authentic Oaxacan food in Minneapolis continues. read more

Wow - this is the best service I've had at a restaurant in probably a year. I wish I could remember the name of our server but he was so polite and helpful! We came here as a group for a friend's 30th/golden birthday and they treated him so well! They ended up giving us a chicken liver app on the house, and added an extra churro to our plate for dessert. The place is small but not understaffed based on its size, so waters were constantly being filled, plates always being cleared, and people regularly checking in to see if we needed anything or that we were happy with the food and drinks. The food is fantastic; you really can't go wrong with this menu. I got the scallops and I would absolutely order those again. The masa chip app was great to share, the corn elote was a must-order, and the shrimp tacos were the best my friend had had! The ambiance is beautiful - very botanical and modern. AND there's a free parking lot, but street parking is plentiful too. Check it out! read more

The food here was so good that even though we sat outside and it was 95 degrees, all of us had a great time. Smaller portions, but the quality is worth it. I want to particularly shout out the chicken liver memelita, which was beautiful, purely on an aesthetic level, and also exceedingly delicious--savory and layered and complicated and fresh. My partner--who is usually grossed out by offal of any kind--was willing to try it and genuinely enjoyed it. Really a standout dish. Otherwise, great service and execution all around. I visited Colita pre-pandemic (in March) and was impressed with food and drink alike! When we were waiting in line outside before they opened (yes, there was a line!) we were treated to a complimentary warm drink to keep us toasty. Once inside, it was difficult to secure a spot at the bar - for good reason. They offer their own infusions and fermentations that are unique and delicious. We split a bunch of small plates between us and everything was creative and tasty. The combinations aren't necessarily traditional but everything works well together. The decor is also gorgeous with a huge plant wall behind the bar. read more
