If I told you what San Franciscans pay for BBQ meats you'd understand when I say it's almost cheaper to fly to Arizona for lunch at COLT Grill. Here at COLT Grill I had The Filly, a salad the menu described as "romaine, walnuts, pears, cranberries, bleu cheese crumbles, cranberry vinaigrette". I opted for the "small" ($8.50) over the" large" ($13) and it was a beautiful salad both in presentation and taste. But the salad portion of the menu also said one could "add chicken or smoked turkey" ($4) or "add beef brisket" ($5) and I did. Did you just tell me I could get a perfect, tasty, ample salad with a separate, robust and delicious side of BBQ beef brisket for $13.50? I wasn't just ready to fly to Arizona; I was ready to move to Cottonwood. This meal was delicious. A "small platter of smoked brisket" ($14.50) was enjoyed equally by another at my table but, with my bowlful of brisket, I paid little attention to that other meal. My attention instead was aimed at a nearby table's indulgence in the smoked Mac-n-cheese ($4.75) and Cheesy Jalapeño Corn Bread ($4). Jealous I was, for I had no room for anything more. Great food! This is a somewhat self serve, you order at the register, find a table & wait for your name to be called & go get your food. Alcoholic drinks are also ordered at the counter. Whenever I stop in Cottonwood I never miss eating at Colt Grill. When you're walking on the sidewalk just follow the smoke. I love pulled pork sandwiches and they never disappoint. Grabbed a side of beans and were set. They have a large patio that's real nice to sit on and enjoy your bbq. There's umbrellas for plenty of shade. They are dog friendly and I like that. I'll preface the review by saying I have been to the colt in Prescott and thought that it was pretty good but I noticed that this location was open for breakfast and wow I have no idea how they are making money on their breakfast burrito cus this thing was massive for only $10! I wish I would have taken a pic but was too excited to eat it. Huge burrito filled with eggs, cheese, brisket and some other meats as well. All around a great breakfast burrito on a really nice tortilla as well. Only thing that I was disappointed with were the salsas. All of them had basically no spice and needed way more flavor. Stopped in for dinner last night and thoroughly enjoyed everything we ate. My hubby got a burger and I opted to nosh on several sides. I got the smoked macaroni and cheese, garlic fries and of course his sides of ranch beans and Texas toast. I also tried the jalapeño margarita (definitely had a kick) and my hubby tried the Whistle Pig whiskey flight. We would definitely come back again. Got a recommendation from our tour guide Jason (shout out to Jason for driving us through the Grand Canyon) that this place has solid food. He never mentioned it was a BBQ place!!! The inside is covered in cowhide decor, the outside seating is near the bbq pit so if you don't like pit smoke sit inside. So here you order and seat yourself. I ordered the Filly cheesesteak with fries. My hubs ordered 3 baby back ribs, brisket tacos and fries. Oh he also had the cowboy cookie. He didn't like the cookie, he said it was dry. The restaurant offer a wide range of sauces that include mild and hot sauces! Plus there is mustard! You can try all of them if you like! Worth sampling! We ordered the small brisket, pork sandwich and burger! The small brisket was big! I ordered the moist sandwich and it was moist! Sandwich came with pickles and bread! My friend ordered the hamburger and came with a big pepper! I think the pepper was bigger than the meat patty! The meat patty was a bit thin but I heard the burger was still good! Our group of six was looking for a good breakfast spot on main street in Cottonwood and stumbled upon this restaurant. This is the perfect spot for a comfort food based breakfast. The menu was not overwhelming while still having some variety. There were a ya drip of vegetarian friendly options which was super helpful. You order at the counter and food is made so quickly! Amazing barbecue location in the tiny town of Cottonwood, we usually go to the location in Sedona, which has a much better selection of local beers, but the food here couldn't be beat and we were well satisfied. Ok, if you don't know BBQ, this place is great. Very cute and the staff was very friendly. Great service. However, if you know BBQ, you may disappointed. I am admittedly a BBQ snob, being from Texas. I've had some of the best. That being said, the BBQ here was not the best. I ordered the sampler platter. The brisket (I ordered the rich) was dry and a little tough and didn't have a great flavor. The ribs were decent, but not spectacular. The turkey was good. The pulled pork was ok, but not very flavorful. Didn't like the sausage at all. I also had the beans and Texas toast. Beans were bland. A friend I was there with ordered the brisket sandwich and it was impressive the amount of brisket, but they put lettuce and tomatoes! Lettuce and tomatoes don't go on brisket sandwiches, onions and hamburgers dill pickles do! The sauces were decent except for the Texas Tangy one. Never had a sauce like that in Texas. read more

Went for lunch after asking the guys at the nearby cactus farm for recommendations. You walk in, grab a menu and tell the hostess what you want. She takes your name & # and tells you to find a seat. It was kinda like counter service without the menu board. I ordered the Thoroughbred salad with brisket and some garlic butter fries. (Don't judge, I was on vacation). The salad came in a stainless steel bowl with steaming smoked brisket in a separate container. You add whatever sauce or condiments you want, though the salad comes dressed on its own. (I got mine without dressing). The salad was fresh and the addition of the brisket and tangy Texas BBQ sauce that I selected was spot on. The amount of yummy, pungent garlic on the fries was astonishing and they were tasty as well. The location is on a corner in Old Cottonwood and most of the chairs are covered in a fitting cowhide print. They also have a dog-friendly outdoor eating area. Yes, we do love this food. It's the first time we tried it out and you can smell it when you walk up and it's as good as it smells. Garlic fries were OK but the brisket so tender and yummy and if you have a dog, you can sit on the patio and it's dog friendly. They even have a dog hamburger. read more

We were out cruising in Cottonwood this week and when we consulted Yelp for a place for lunch, the Colt Grill came up looking pretty good. We were not disappointed. It was not too crowded, parking really easy in front. Inside the atmosphere is warm and western. There is also an outside dining area with lots of tables. It was a bit chilly. We ate inside. I was impressed with the attention to details that went into the food. My husband's beef brisket tacos were excellent. The brisket was juicy and there was a lot of it. I had the smoked turkey wrap. My wife and I had a bad experience here. Came in nice and hungry and looking forward to our meal. Its a pretty busy place on the cute main street which was as expected. Walked in and waited in line at what we thought was the hostess station. When we got to the front we asked for a table and they told us that we could grab a table inside that had just opened up. My wife did that while I went to wash my hands. We sat and sat and finally I went up to the counter to see when our server would be coming as we wanted to order. Our number was called and I went up to grab the grub. It all looked good and I brought it back over to the table only to sit down and realize we had no silverware, BBQ sauce, ketchup and mustard, etc.... Back up to the counter I go where I was pointed to a sauce station and rack with flatware. Ok ok so I grabbed some sauces, dropped those off, then came back for silverware and napkins. Well, they had no forks and no ranch or mayo at the sauce station so ask again at the counter for them. They shrugged at the forks saying maybe there is some outside. By now I'm frustrated and I told them I wasn't sitting outside. Guy shrugged again, gave me the mayo and ranch, then pretended I wasn't there. Asked again... can you PLEASE grab some forks for this bin... his eyes rolled and they appeared. Onto the FOOD. Brisket, yummy. Pulled pork, yummy. Nice BBQ place. You order at the counter and then pick up food when they call your name. I got a spicy chicken sandwich and it was really good. hubby got pulled pork which he said was pretty good. Thankfully we were with locals who showed us the ropes - it wasn't super clear we needed to order upfront and we felt sort of rushed to make a decision because of the line behind us.
