This hotel overcharged me for 3 extra people and a "soiled towel". They're we're 2 people that came to visit our room prior to us leaving for the day who had stayed at another hotel. I called the hotel to see why I was charged $35 extra and they said it was for extra occupants and a towel they couldn't clean. I told them no one extra stayed with us and there were only towels with water on them. They said they'd call me back and never did. I'll never stay here again and will advise against others staying here. Very shady. Beds were not comfortable and breakfast was not good so save the money and stay somewhere else. read more

We stayed for 1 night on a road trip. The bed was super comfortable and the pillows were excellent. Our room overlooked a small wooded area with a babbling brook just below which was lovely. We were on the upper floor (Room 304), so no deck or balcony, but we did have a fireplace. The management left a Duraflame log along with a lighter and it was great to have a fire on a chilly night. The room was basic, but clean and very conveniently located. The breakfast was uninspired, but I suppose many places don't even offer included breakfast anymore so some might consider it a plus. After seeing what was on offer, we opted to have breakfast out. Front desk staff was quite friendly and efficient. No complaints at all, this was a very decent stay. read more

Highly recommend staying at the Colton Inn. Ellen the GM was helpful, kind and knowledgeable from booking our room, checking us in and calling to thank us after we left. It was our anniversary and they left us something sweet in our room, who does that these days??? Colton Inn! The rooms are spacious, beds are comfortable, and the hotel and rooms very clean!! We stayed in a room with a fireplace, had a beautiful view of the grounds with the stream running through it. Love the fact that we were able to park our motorcycle in a carport. We didn't get to enjoy the breakfast, we had to get on the road early. Next time we go back we will plan better to enjoy all of it. Highly recommend the Colton Inn!! read more

Monterey is not the least expensive place to play tourist. But lucky us, Booking.com offered a great price currently, a room that was quite acceptable for $99. Of course, that is off season. I couldn't have been happier to find we had a spacious, clean room . Two queen beds, a refrigerator, microwave, and lo and behold, plenty of electrical outlets available to plug in your electronics. It must be nice during non-rainy season, our nice first floor room had access to a very appealing patio deck that overlooked a trickling steam, with umbrella'd tables, outdoor heaters, and even a bbq. Not bad. And the well stocked office offered apples, oranges, bananas, a wide variety of teas, fresh coffee, and several kinds of freshly baked cookies, all available until 10pm. for nibblers. In the morning you can mosey in and pick up a light continental breakfast, if so inclined. But with foodie heaven just down the street in old town Monterey, it was too easy to turn down the bagels, pastries and cereal. Multi-leveled, they have an elevator. A dry sauna is located in the basement that is turned on by request. There are even some covered parking spots available. Nice. And the staff bent over backwards with kindness. My only complaint, and the only reason I will not be tempted to return, is the beds. Ouch. So firm I was wishing I had a bed of nails as an alternative by the end of the night. They shall only see me again if the mattresses are better. read more

We were in town for a wedding in Carmel. Monterey is cheaper. I found this place on Expedia. We arrived at 2:30pm and they wouldn't let us check in until 3:00pm. The FREE trolley was recommended so we walked to that and had dinner in Cannery Row. When we returned it was an easy check in. We got a room on the 2nd floor. It was clean and quiet and THE WINDOWS OPENED! I can't remember a hotel with windows that opened! Yay! The bed was kinda hard but ok. There was no clock! Boo! Is that a new thing? And for hotel owners, "shampoo/conditioner" is not really a thing! I have fine hair that tangles easily. Conditioner helps detangle and makes combing wet hair easier. This was not easy. I guess I'll go back to packing my own conditioner. Parking was free. That was a big point in choosing a hotel for me! There was complimentary breakfast. But they are still Covid limited, so nothing cooked. We only tried it on our last morning; toaster for bread and bagels, cereal, hard boiled eggs, apples, juice and coffee and yogurt. Ellen was extremely rude and racist. We had a horrible experience checking in, there was a lot of confusion on their end & the cops had to be called. According to the cops they come there often. For being a general manager Ellen was very incompetent and it shocked me that she didn't know how to properly run a business. The rooms are very outdated with a lot of rules. 2 weeks later we noticed an additional charge of $40. When I called, Ellen stated we had a third adult in our room which we didn't so that's what the $40 charge was for. She didn't want to refund it due to her saying Visa charges her $25 for refunds. After going back and forth for a while she said she would refund only $15 but only after she checked if we left a Yelp review because a lot of people said they were going to leave one during the confrontation. Room was a little plain and dark but comfortable for us. You have to request more towels etc. but we stayed 4 nights and the location was good. If I were to be picky, the bathrooms need updating, but they were clean and did the job. Breakfast was decent and staff was friendly. We have stayed at a number of hotels in the Monterey area. This hotel had stains on the floor, bugs in the room, no air conditioning and horrible customer service. We called to make a reservation the same day coming in from Las Vegas for a four day stay for my sons graduation from the Defense Language Institute. We got in at midnight from the airport and the front desk left us keys in an unlocked mail Box since they close at 11. The next morning I asked the front desk about canceling our the remainder of our stay but was told we couldn't because they have a 72 hour cancellation policy. They tried to get me to sign a policy paper that authorized them to charge us all kinds of fees including a carpet cleaning fee for stains when there are already several stains on the carpet. The receptionists answer was they already know about those so we didn't need to worry. Interestingly enough the cancellation policy was not on the check in documents and the receptionist said that was because we are already here. It also isn't on their website. The elevators inspection certificate expired in October of 2018 and made some pretty strange noises when we were riding on it. I don't often leave reviews but when I booked this one it showed 3.5 stars and that is WAY off. Don't fall victim to this horrible hotel like we did and don't fall for the fake reviews clearly posted about this place. read more

It is pathetic how a hotel charged me $100 for towels that were "damaged" due to excessive makeup stains and did not even messaged me nor called me to inform me. I had to find out 1week later through my bank when I saw the charge. As a business woman I travel quite often; have stayed in numerous hotels, not once have I ever encountered this issue. I use white towels at home and have no issues removing the makeup. Is Colton Inn not washing the towels with Clorox or other chemicals are they only washing them with water? I wanted to support a small business and not a large chain hotel that's why I choose Colton Inn. If I would have know that this is how Colton Inn runs their business and wants to stay in business by charging their guess these type of fees. I would have taken my business elsewhere to a large hotel chain. It cost me $462 for one night. Pleas do you yourself a favor and don't book there. You might end up with unexpected fees like myself. I read the 1-star and 5-star reviews before I got there. I did not have the 1-star experience at all. The room I had was a nice size with a big king-sized bed. Linens were clean as were towels. The carpet was a bit worn, and there's no AC, but I had the advantage of having lived in Monterey for a couple of years, so I knew what to expect in terms of weather. The staff was friendly and efficient. Cleaning staff was already working at 8:30am when I checked out. It's a short distance from the wharf and a very short drive to Lighthouse Ave and all the stuff down on Cannery Row. And the Colton is a bit less expensive than the big chains and the historic hotels downtown. So, while I would not stay there in August when it's hot, I really enjoyed my time there. read more

The worst place to stay in Monterey. The general manager was rude the moment we arrived. The room smelled, the fan in the bathroom did not work, the windows were dirty and the beds are very uncomfortable. Great location, comfortable amenities, TERRIBLE MANAGER. Short Version: My card was fraudulently charged by the sociopath manager, who repeatedly harassed us in our room. Long Version: My family was vacationing in Monterey for the weekend. We planned to visit the Aquarium, the wharf, and the beach. We booked a room at the Colton Inn through Hotwire, checking in 9/21 and checking out 9/23 On 9/21 in the evening hours, while reading a story to our two young boys before bedtime, my eldest son knocked over a cup on the bedside table. This splashed a small amount of liquid onto the bedside table and some liquid landed on the hotel lamp. The hotel lamp had outlets on the base where guests can plug in personal items to charge such as cell phones. My wife's cell phone was plugged into the the outlet at the base of the hotel lamp. The splash of liquid landed on the plug and tripped a fuse in the room. We immediately lost power to about half the room. The TV, the bathroom lights, the bedside lamp, and the lamp on the other side of the room all went dark. I went to the front desk to ask for help to reset the fuse. The clerk at the front desk, Jordan, did not know how to do this, so she called the manager, who resides on site at the hotel for help. It took her a great deal of time to find the fuse, which was located inside our bathroom, but she ultimately reset the fuse and power was restored. She then insisted on removing the lamp from our room, citing that liquid had gotten inside the lamp and it was now damaged. I asked her to first plug it in to test it, but she refused to test it, and left us short one lamp without a replacement. Earlier in the afternoon, I had unplugged and moved our rooms telephone out of reach, because my 2 year old would not stop playing with it. About 25 minutes after the manager took the lamp she returned. This time she was clearly flustered that we did not pick up the phone. She had been trying to call our room for some time. She told me that she would have to charge us for the lamp because the 'liquid inside' had broken it. I told her that she needed to prove to me that it was broken before she could charge me. My response really made her mad and she stormed off without another word. About 25 mins later, at approximately 10:45 we had all the lights off and were trying to put our kids to sleep, when she knocks on the door again. She is even more agitated than before and she immediately threatened that we must plug the phone back in or she would be forced to call the police to kick us out of the room. I was caught completely off guard by her aggressive, and seemingly unprovoked threat. I plugged the phone back in and told her I'd follow up with her the next day to continue our discussion. On 9/22 after a day of visiting the Aquarium, we returned to the room, and I went down to the front office to speak with the manager to hopefully resolve the issue. She refused to meet me in person, instead she spoke to me only on the front desk phone. She said that she had not tested the lamp, and she had already charged my card. She refused to consider reversing the charge, and when I asked to speak to the owner she again threatened to have the police remove us from the premises because I was making her uncomfortable. The front desk clerk, Jordan, gave me the lamp because according to the manager, we had just bought it. I plugged the lamp in right there in the front office and tested that both circuits functioned perfectly. Jordan, was a witness to the conversation and the lamp test. Jordan apologized for her managers behavior. I returned the lamp to our room, and plugged it back in by the bed. Directly after this I called Citibank and disputed this charge. Ultimately my dispute was approved, but not without much lost time on the phone. If you read other reviews of this hotel, you'll find such circumstances are common at the Colton Inn. 2 star rating still because the location was good. read more

This place is a gem. We had a room upstairs and it was SO quiet at night; so much superior to many of the hotels we have stayed at in Monterey where you hear doors slamming shut late at night, people talking, and kids screaming. Valentina was the person whom checked us in and addressed all our questions. She was very hospitable and outgoing. This hotel is very clean and the grounds are well maintained so things you may have read about this place possibly being a bit dated or run down is completely false. It was clean and comfy, but lacked AC and just had a portable heater. One of the reasons we picked this hotel, was it had a fireplace. My dad has cancer and is cold often. We weren't told we couldn't use the fireplace until after we had checked in. Although I do understand restrictions may not be up to the hotel, I would have booked elsewhere had we known ahead of time. I was a little sketched out by the online pictures, the place looked old, but I decided to take a gamble and go with it. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly front desk employee (only one person on at a time, so be patient). He went over a few things and then sent us on our way. We were booked on the 3rd floor (score, no one above us). Our room faced the creek that ran behind the hotel, as well as the patio, which had tables and chairs and heaters. The room. Yes it needs updating in a bad way. The furniture is mismatched, and the place is just old. But, there is a wood burning fire place in the room! No there is no A/C, but you don't really need A/C here, just open the window and breath in some fresh air! Beds weren't overly comfortable, not not uncomfortable. Bathroom was decent size and there was a vanity mirror outside the bathroom, so two people can easily get ready at the same time. The best thing this place has going for them is location. It was walking distance to Trader Joe's (we ran out of wine, very convenient) as well as Restaurant 1833 (try his place). Skip the continental breakfast in the morning and walk over to Parker-Lusseau Pastries for coffee and breakfast. Also, parking is free. Try and find that anywhere else in Monterey. read more

So I was a little nervous driving in this neighborhood, thinking we mad a reservation to a fleabag motel. Especially since we rented it for cheap. Nope. We did not. It was clean, structurally sound with no funky odors and plenty of space. The parking situation is a little tough though. They don't seem to have enough parking spaces for the number of units that they do have. Also, the spaces that they do have are a bit on the narrow side if you have anything larger than a sedan. We made a reservation for 2 queens and was given a room with 1 bed. This was corrected immediately and with no hassle after a quick chat with the front desk. And, luckily, we didn't have to move to another floor, we just had to move next door. Due to location and pricing we returned for a second stay at the Colton Inn. Since our prior stay the rooms have been updated a bit, new carpeting and new coffee makers. This time we were in a deluxe King room and it was quite large and comfortable. Pros: Thick towels Free parking Free wi-fi Walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf Cookies, fruit and hot beverages every day from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. (maybe later, I don't remember) Decent continental breakfast Friendly staff Cons: The bed was really hard The water pipes are very loud, I was woken when a toilet was flushed in another room or others took a shower So, all-in-all I rarely sleep while traveling anyway, so a night with interrupted sleep is the price I pay for a great location at a reasonable price in Monterey. Our room was very spacious with a microwave, fridge, fireplace, and a whirlpool tub. Colton Inn also offers a list of over 300 movies you can borrow for free (they offer the latest releases). The complimentary breakfast consisted of about 11 different cereals, variety of bagels, pastries, oatmeal, coffee, juice, and a variety of tea. There's a lot going on at this place besides our particular issue. We always let the hotel know at check-in that we are traveling with a service animal. Each hotel has been accommodating. Even the bed and breakfast inns where we've stayed have been extremely gracious. NOT COLTON INN. We stayed here previously and experienced no problems. Not this time. We checked in, and we told them we had a service dog. My husband then began to bring our luggage up to our room. An employee began to follow him upstairs saying we would be charged for any and all damage caused by our service animal. Our dog is a very well trained animal. We then decided to take a close look at the room before taking our dog from his crate. The carpet was dirty, worn, and stained with spots. There was even a shard of glass in the entryway. I called the front desk and insisted the employee come back up to the room to inspect it before our dog ever touched the floor. My husband had already thrown the glass shard away fearing someone may get cut. She acknowledged the dirtiness and wear and said management was aware of it. To make her feel more comfortable, I showed her the dog. He is very small, hypoallergenic, and doesn't shed. I assured her he would not be on any of the furniture. He travels with his own crate and blankets. We left our room at noon the next day. My husband went to the front office to let them know we were leaving and could they please clean ourI took our service dog outdoors for a break. All of a sudden a rude, aggressive, intimidating, bully came running out of the door shouting are you staying here? What are you doing? We don't allow dogs. My dog was clearly in his marked service dog vest, but I still tried to explain the obvious. He is a service dog. This very aggressive person kept yelling and interrupting and would not even allow me to respond by telling her we had already informed the clerk upon check-in. The clerk had even come up to our room to inspect the carpets because the place was so dirty. The stress of this person's verbal tirade exacerbated my already tenuoucontinued shouting me down. Perhaps she was just too incompetent at her job and unable to understand my responses or understand that the letters on a vest that are clearly marked service dog do mean the dog is a working animal. Concerned for my physical safety -- because this female was a foot taller than me at my barely five feet and easily outweighed me by a hundred pounds -- my husband told her to stop harassing me. He told her he did advise the front desk that we had a service dog. This person ignored him and angrily demanded to know was he a service dog? What service did he provide? My husband told her he already provided that information at check-in, and her demeanor and manner was upsetting and threatening to us. It went way beyond merely inquiring. We then tentatively went into the office. She looked up our check-in status and saw that we did report our dog. She said I don't care. I have the right to question you. My husband said you don't have the right to continually ask questions that have been asked and answered. That's harassment. We no longer felt safe or felt our belongings would be safe in our room. Once she realized she was wrong and the service dog had been noted in the records at check-in, she refused to speak to us any further or apologize for her inexcusable behavior. We decided we couldn't stay in this hostile and unsafe environment. She did nothing to ameliorate or apologize for her rude and unprofessional behavior. While my husband packed up the car, I asked her to come check the insisted she come up to the room to make sure we had not damaged or soiled the already damaged and soiled carpets. She looked at the room and said, "It's fine." I -- not her, the host -- but I, the guest, tried to talk to her again. I started out by saying this was unfortunate because we were prior guests and had enjoyed our previous stays. She still refused to speak to me. I then asked for her name to which she replied, "Your husband has my card." My husband told her we would be writing a yelp review, and in a threatening voice she said that's fine, and I'll reply to it. I'm assuming she must be one of the owners or related to the owner because otherwise I can't imagine this behavior would be tolerated. She does not belong in the service industry. I have been so emotionally overwrought, it has taken me this long to even put a few thoughts down. This establishment is not in compliance with the State of California Unruh Civil Rights Act, the California Disabled Persons Act, (CDPA), and the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA). Colton Inn is also required by federal law to be compliant with The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). read more

Hooray! There was a sale on hotels.com and we ended up staying here one night for $89. The room was gigantic! You could probably also fit 4 people comfortably on that bed (yay for king-sized beds :O ). There was also a microwave, fridge and fireplace. We were hella hoping for a jetted tub, but our room didn't have one. I guess you can't have everything in life though, so it's okay. The lady at the front desk was really nice and helpful. They had cookies and fruit there throughout the day. At breakfast, they had a ton of different cereals, bagels, pastries, coffee, juice, and tea. They have a DVD library with a ton of different movies that you can rent for free. (I checked out Enchanted and ever since Saturday night, I've had "How do you knowwwwww" stuck in my head.) It's really close to a ton of different restaurants. We walked to Episilon for dinner. I think you could walk to the aquarium from there. Everything seemed pretty close by. read more

Conveniently located for a friend's wedding in Pebble Beach, but the quality's subpar for the price. The accommodations are very basic and on the same level as Super 8s though at over twice the cost. Not all rooms have fireplaces and be ready for cramped bathrooms. The continental breakfast is also on the same level as Super 8s with just a couple extras. For the price, I'd look around and see if you can find better amenities for the same price or less. As simply a clean, bare bones place to crash - Colton Inn will suffice. read more

This place is...fine. Pros are that it is in walking distance to a lot. That is about it. The photos online really fool you into thinking that every room has a cute little fire place. When we walked in, there was no fireplace, just a dusty old space heater. And for heat, THAT WAS IT. It was 40 degrees when we first arrived and were trying to heat the entire room with a space heater. On day 2, we were drying our hair and had the heater on. I realize that in your home or maybe a quirky bed and breakfast you can't do this. But in a legit hotel, you would think they would provide the correct electrical set up to do this. Nope. We blew the fuse and all of our power went out. The person at the front desk said "well did you use the space heater and the blow dryer?" Uh, yeah we did. This hotel is crap. Stay away. read more
