This place is...fine. Pros are that it is in walking distance to a lot. That is about it. The photos online really fool you into thinking that every room has a cute little fire place. When we walked in, there was no fireplace, just a dusty old space heater. And for heat, THAT WAS IT. It was 40 degrees when we first arrived and were trying to heat the entire room with a space heater. On day 2, we were drying our hair and had the heater on. I realize that in your home or maybe a quirky bed and breakfast you can't do this. But in a legit hotel, you would think they would provide the correct electrical set up to do this. Nope. We blew the fuse and all of our power went out. The person at the front desk said "well did you use the space heater and the blow dryer?" Uh, yeah we did. This hotel is crap. Stay away. read more

Very disappointed with the GM in the office. She wasn't welcoming. She refused to give me the $10 per night that was on their own website, because I called & booked. Really bad customer service. She set the tone for the rest of the time. Too bad she doesn't have better customer skills. The other girls in office were nice. This is a perfect place to stay if you're visiting Monterey. The place is clean and comfortable and tucked away just a few walks away from the busy downtown. We stayed here for the Big Sur marathon and were treated like kings and queens. The front desk is extremely helpful and has a delicious breakfast open these in stock it well into the afternoon with fruits and cookies, coffees and teas. Unless you want to be treated like garbage from the staff do not stay at this hotel. Especially if you have kids. Checked into this hotel around 5:15 on a Friday night and my kids wanted to take a walk being that they were in the car for 3.5 hours. My kids are 8 and 9. The lady at the front desk told me that they were being too loud . Ummmm ok! That's cool! Then I get crap from the manager. Her dirty looks were enough to kill and she is the most unpleasant woman. Had to remind her that we were paying to stay there. You get treated as if this is a motel not a hotel. The price is too much for what they offer and their attitude belongs in the trash. Only plus side to this was that we were ten min from the aquarium and fisherman's Wharf. Will never stay here again. Thank you Colton Inn for your crappy customer service. read more

This post is strictly for the front desk staff... I was extremely disappointed with the attitude and rudeness of the woman at the front desk. I requested a room on the top floor furthest away from noise, fireplace, king bed. I booked my trip with her on the phone wherein she indicated that a "back room" would be her recommendation since it's away from the street and more than likely would be a little quitter. Great! I took her recommendation. When I was checking, there was no one else there yet it took her over 15 minutes to even say anything to me. When she finally got to me and explained the room I was getting, I reminded her of my request. She cut me off and said, "yes, I know I spoke with you and told you this would be what is available." WRONG! I again tried to tell her what I originally requested and she again was so rude and didn't even acknowledge what I was saying nor the fact that she got it wrong. She was condescending, rude and absolutely the worst customer service I've ever received! She put us on the first floor right next to the lobby, across from ice machine, next to the housekeeping utility room and no fire place. Oh and the "patio" was a community patio so we couldn't open our window or sliding door because it was had no privacy and was very loud in the morning! We arrived around 7:15 p.m. and the hotel was at full capacity so my complaining wouldn't have gotten me anywhere anyway. So, I let it go and asked if we were able to have the late check out as requested. She said it probably wouldn't be available due to full capacity but check in the a.m.; understandable. The next morning, I called and it's the same lady! Before I can even ask about the late check out, she tells me its not available. Fine....why did she feel the need to call at 11:45 to remind us to be out by noon???? Then as if that wasn't insulting enough after the terrible treatment we've received from HER, another staff came knocking on our door at a few minutes before noon reminding us of checkout time!!! Unbelievable. I will return to Colton Inn because I love this place but I would strongly encourage upper management to bring these issues to her attention. read more

we stayed here for 1 night in June and it was a great set up for us. We had 2 little kids with us. One slept on the futon and another was in a portable crib that we brought with us. It's a spacious room and clean. Outdated but comfortable. There's a list of dvds at the front desk. Didn't get any but good to know. Front desk is handy and efficient. There's a small fridge in the room. Breakfast was better than most motels - bagels, fruit, cereal, muffins, juices and coffee. There's a perfect back deck with patio furniture by a creek (a bit dry this year) for breakfasts and snacks. loved the variety of freshly baked cookies throughout the day! Only thing is that it would be nice if they had online booking and/or confirmation. My husband booked the room on the phone and they thought we booked it for the night before. When we arrived, they corrected the credit charge and fortunately had rooms for us! With a confirmation, whether email or phone, these types of errors can be caught. read more

Everything was perfect. I booked the room at a great deal on Booking.com and asked for a quiet room. We were given a room in a far corner that was so quiet, it was as if we were the only people there on Halloween weekend. Fabulous. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The room was sparkling clean. Everything far exceeded my expectations. This happens so rarely in life that it's worth celebrating. After spending a night in a less desirable motel we booked The Colton Inn on Hotwire. It was a little more than we wanted to spend but the location was perfect for our activities for the Next Generation Jazz Festival and we were sort of desperate. We called ahead of time and asked if we could drop our bags off at 8am since we'd booked a 9am whale watching trip. They said it was no prob and when we checked in at 3pm they'd already brought our bags to the room. The room was neat and clean and a decent size. One of the towels was a bit worn but they replaced it. Bed was comfy. Room stayed warm thanks to the heater in the corner. The shower didn't have much water pressure hit I've come to expect that from hotels. Breakfast isn't much but the gesture is nice - coffee and muffins and fruit. Upon check out we once again asked them to hold our bags since we didn't fly out til 7pm that night and they were happy to do so. read more

My husband and I stayed in the 'Honeymoon Suite' for two nights for our anniversary. Pros: -there are covered parking spots (first come, first serve) -the hotel is walking distance to downtown (5 minute walk) and Fisherman's Warf (15-20 minute walk) which was nice -free continental breakfast every morning -private hot tub (see con for it) -in-room Keurig, mini-fridge, microwave -the fireplace was nice to have in the room -free wifi Cons: -the bed was very, very hard and uncomfortable -the rugs seemed old and dirty -the futon/couch and chairs were dirty and pretty gross looking -the hot tub did not work... only a couple jets would turn on but they were very weak and the water did not get very hot even when we set the temp hotter. That was the most disappointing part of our trip since we payed extra for the hot tub -bring your own robes if you want to use them, theirs are very scratchy and uncomfortable -the room was located next to the laundry room... so we heard all sorts of noises and workers talking all morning and afternoon. Very annoying! The price would have been a great deal compared to other hotels with Jacuzzi's if the hot tub had actually worked... But because it didn't work, staying here was not worth the price and we will not be returning. read more

I have never been treated like this by any establishment in my entire life. I preface the following to note that I have reported all of this Expedia, and it is been escalated to the appropriate corporate department to ensure this does not happen to their users again. When I was about to check in with my husband, I should've known something was wrong with this establishment. Another guest was immediately checking out after checking in, and I watched the general manager direct this individual to go find another place to stay if he wasn't satisfied. The GM claimed this customer was unhappy was because the room didn't have a fireplace. For the record, this place is willfully misrepresenting the inn by posting photos of all of their rooms with fireplaces on Expedia's website. When we checked in, we indicated we were a room of 3 adults. There was an error in our Expedia reservation. Instead of a gracious response from the GM, she told me I'm welcome to find another place to stay. That is not how you treat customers. I booked this place for a wedding, and because of some now obviously tailored positive reviews on trip advisor. The last thing I was looking for was a GM's invitation to find another place to stay. In spite of this, we agreed to the additional charge because it was obviously an error that we had to take care of. After leaving the inn on Sunday, I received the following message from the GM through Expedia: Hello Ms Mozaffarimehr, Your party checked out of out hotel this morning. When my housekeeping went in to clean your room, they found a couple of towels stuffed in the trashcan. It is 1 bath towel, 2 hand towels and 1 bath mat, all soiled and stained beyond cleaning. We took photo's of how we found them and individual of the items and bagged them for you. The charge for the towels you can find on the sign in sheet you signed upon check in, you were given a copy attached to the map of the hotel. The bath towel is $75, hand towels $25 each and bath mat $15. Together with the extra charge for the 3rd adult in the room that wasn't on the original reservation that is $40 (as we mentioned to you upon check in the charge is $20, the info can also be found on all Expedia websites), the total charge that is made to your credit card is $ 180. The items are bagged for you, if you like you can pick them up at the hotel or we can ship it to you at UPS shipping charges with a ship to address. Thank you, Ellen Reinerink, GM Colton Inn 1. Having family in the hotel industry, I can confirm that hotel towels get soiled. I have never in my life been told that dirty towels would result in such outrageous charges, or any charges for that matter. For an entity that has their front desk close at 11 PM and have no staff on site at night, I'm wondering when anyone is sick or if there is a mess what they expect their guests to do. 2. My husband was sick Saturday night, and we went out of our way to ensure that there was no mess in the restroom after. This establishment has appeared to have taken advantage of us by charging me for towels, towels that at any store or bought in bulk by hotels, cost a fraction of what they are charging me. They are not a five star spa that is offering Turkish robes. There is no justification for the prices that they are charging me. I'm fairly certain that this establishment washes towels that are soiled every day in bleach without issue. I'm not sure why this situation was any different. 3. MOREOVER, it is absolutely offensive to contact me and tell me that they have bagged our soiled towels and that we can come either pick them up or you can ship them to us at cost. I'm not sure what their interpretation of customer service is, but this isn't it. I've stayed at hostels that are much more gracious and friendlier than this place was . It is a shame that they operate a business in the heart of one of the most pleasant areas in the country. 4. Finally, when we checked in, I saw no written policy detailing costs for soiled towels or anything for that matter. As an attorney I'm fairly certain that they have extended the definition of incidentals beyond the scope of what is normally expected. I am disputing this charge with my bank and have reported this place to the Better Business Bureau. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. read more

My friend and I recently stayed here for just one night. We were trying to get out of the smoke in Sacramento, due to the forest fires. It was a last minute decision for us to do this and at the time I booked the room I wasn't sure if I was going to bring my service dog with us. We did end up bringing the dog with us. When we arrived to check in, the receptionist was very rude about the fact that I didn't mention the dog when I made the reservation, never mind the fact that this was a last minute decision. She proceeded to go over the rules about having the animal in the room, which were the standard animal rules, (no getting on the bed, and no messes). Totally happy to comply we checked into our room. We only stayed one night and never left the dog alone. We checked out at about 9am the following morning. We left the room in a clean slept in condition, however we had gotten a hand towel wet, which got left on the carpet. A couple of days later we received an email from the Inn stating that my dog had an accident on the rug. They charged us a $75 cleaning fee without even asking any questions. Again, this is a trained service animal, in the 2 years I have had her she has never had an "accident". $75 to have them clean a wet spot on the floor that wasn't from the dog at all!! We will never be back, and don't recommend if you're traveling with a service animal. It is ADA discrimination as far as I'm concerned!! read more

Perfect room.. bed was comfy...room was spacious. I appreciated the use of a duvet on the comforter (washed between guests). Note to the lovebirds excited about the in-room Jacuzzi.. These hot tubs are not built for fuckin. : / It had 2 narrow seats towards the back.. my eyes bled with the amount of chlorine used. There were 2 more shallow seats towards the front and we never could figure out the weird set up going on. Not that we tried to fuck in the tub or anything.. OK we did and we failed.. and I blame the hot tub. The continental breakfast was set up kinda weird in the front office. I love my cereal but, that big pitcher of whole milk made my stomach curdle just from the sight of it. I grabbed a semi-hard croissant that I didn't eat and some warm Orange Juice (made from concentrate) The place is clean, the staff was nice, they had a great oatmeal soap bar that I'm pissed I didn't get to steal any extra. The saying "don't judge a book by it's cover" definitely apply to Colton Inn. My first impression was satisfied by the look of the location, but after entering my room, my perspective changed completely. Pros: Rooms: The room that I stayed at was called the honeymoon suite, which was super cozy and the best part was the private outdoor jacuzzi. Most places that I have been to have a private indoor jacuzzi in the bathrooms, but this was my first outdoor private jacuzzi. The outdoor jacuzzi are surrounded by private walls, so its perfect an outdoor dip at your own comfort. And they are regularly maintained and cleaned daily. Cleanliness: I always inspect my rooms before settling in and this place seem well maintained. TV's: Updating technology in locally owned hotel/motels have been an issue I've seen lately, but Colton Inn had up to date television sets and I was happy to have complimentary cable and WIFI. Room Service: Service here was extremely fast. When I called room service to fix a technical issue, they literally showed up when I put down the phone! The people at the front desk are welcoming and helpful as well. Overall, Colton Inn may seem unpleasant from the outside, but the rooms are lovely, spacious, and comfortable. If you're need of place when vacationing in Montery, then I highly recommended booking at Colton Inn. read more

Quiet area and a walk to Fishermans warf. We even walked to Canary Row from the Inn, nice walk along the water. We had a fireplace in the room.. That was nice because it was real, not a gas one. Request the upstairs rooms, you can here everything from upstairs if you are downstairs. The people upstairs were stomping around all night! They have a Huuuge list of dvd's available. Biggest disappointment was checking out,, I mentioned how we only had 3 hrs sleep cause of the people upstairs and that the bathroom had mold all over the ceiling, the front desk guy could only offer us a "oh, that's too bad". read more

I really really enjoy my stays here. Two things I look for when booking a room are value, and location. This place has both. It is close to cannery row, Carmel and everything else you'd want to do in the area. So needless to say...it's a great launching point since it's in the middle of everything. They have free wifi, free dvd rentals and free breakfast in the morning. I usually choose to forgo the breakfast, since I make it a point to dine at Carmel Belle for brunch on my visits. Definitely give that place a try while you're here. You WONT be disappointed :) My favorite part of the room is the fireplace. It just adds to the charm and coziness of the room. They give you however many logs you need to keep it burnin' all night. The staff was really friendly and helpful, and the rooms were clean. This inn is located in a safe residential area, which is more appealing than being near a noisy freeway, or some industrial seedy part of the city. It just makes you feel more at home :) Prices average around the $110-130 range, but I have booked rooms here before for about $80-90 during the months of September and October. What an awesome Gem hidden in the Monterey bay. We found this place on accident but so glad we did. The rooms are very current with all the amenities in the room you could ask for. It was extremely clean, beds very comfortable and parking very easy at the Hotel. Walking distance to the Fishermen Warf and 5 minute walk to the bus station where you can catch the free trolley to Cannery row or several other places you want to go. For what it is (a reasonably priced, clean, safe place to stay in Monterey, which is somewhat hard to come by), it did the job for a nice overnight. It could get tiring to sleep on the hard beds for more than a few days, but it exceeded my expectations for around $100 for the night. They had complimentary snacks at the front desk and though I don't usually do hotel breakfasts (not with such yummy food all over the peninsula), I did check it out and grabbed some fruit and it looked alright. I wanted to write to say thanks to the woman at the front desk who was willing to show me the room that we would be booking. She did so without attitude and was very helpful- I really appreciated that and it helped us say yes to this place. Happy that I did not hear through the walls or anything, so noise was okay compared to Munras Ave much better really. Our room overlooked a parking lot that I could hear during the day but no one could park there overnight I believe. It doesn't have a ton of frills (though apparently there is a sauna in the basement!) but it exceeded my expectations and was clean and a good place to rest your head, so four stars for what it is! read more

The best thing about this Inn is how close it is to Fisherman's Warf and that some of the parking spots are covered. It rained the 3 days we were there, so it was nice to stay dry getting to and from the car with little ones. Unfortunately, it ends there. When we checked in, the lobby smelt of cigarette smoke and while the woman at the front desk was not rude, she was not particularly friendly either. Although I had requested a first floor room, we were given a room on the 2nd floor. Rather than make a fuss, we just went with it. Big mistake. The rickety elevator was scary and the operating permit expired 3 months ago. The thing is, the stairs weren't an option because they are not protected from the rain, made of a slick concrete material and it rained our entire trip. So, carrying small children made the stairs more hazardous than the elevator. The room was musty smelling, it only had a space heater for warmth and the bed was very uncomfortable. We only paid about $150 a night, which is pretty good for Monterey in-season and nothing was bad enough that I felt I needed to complain, but I definitely won't be returning. read more

For what this place is, it is FANTASTIC. I called 5 days before our trip to Monterey and asked tons of questions. The lady I spoke to was very polite and patient. I secured my room with a credit card, but made sure they knew I would actually pay in cash when I arrived. I also got a nice AAA discount (and never had to actually show them my AAA card). When we arrived, we were several hours before the designated check in time. We knew this in advance and had made plans to explore the city while they prepared the room. When we arrived, there were cookies, juice, fruits, and other snacks laid out and we were greeted by a very nice lady (I think the same lady I spoke to on the phone). She explained that the room was still being cleaned. They let us park our car, stash our stuff, and sold us tickets to the aquarium (2 days for the price of one!). The lady also showed us how to find the free trolley that would take us to Cannery Row. Overall, she was very pleasant, professional and helpful! Later, at about 3:30 we arrived back at the hotel, ready to take a rest from our adventures that day! When we arrived, a different person, Pierce, was running the front desk. He was very sweet and quickly got us checked in. We were in room 106, which is the King with a Jacuzzi Tub room (NOT the honeymoon suite). The room was clean, comfortable and what you would expect from modest hotel. The hot tub is on its own very private deck and can easily fit two people and a third could fit if needed. It was nice and hot and there were extra towels and robes for us to use. The king bed was actually one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept on. It wasn't too soft and the pillows were king-size pillows - and they weren't those flimsy feather ones that flatten as soon as you put your head down. The pillows were nice and firm, and there were lots of them (I like a hugging pillow). There was ample space for both me and my boyfriend and we both slept like babies. The ONLY criticism I have of this hotel is the light bulbs. I know, I know... maybe I am nit-picking... but they use those environmentally friendly florescent bulbs that glow really white... and I hated them. I even considered finding a drugstore and buying light bulbs with a more natural light (instead we just turned off all the lights and soaked in the hot tub by moon and tub-light :) I will bring a few extra bulbs (and maybe some candles) next time I stay at the Colton Inn. ANd I DO appreciate them trying to be green. All in all, this was a great experience. The hotel was clean, comfortable, romantic, and a great value - you would be hard pressed to find another room in Monterey with a private hot tub for under $220. Definitely plan on returning and recommending to friends! read more

I wasn't too impressed with the front desk staff (general manager) who came across as slightly rude to our guests of a wedding party. They do not prefer booking for larger groups (We had 5 rooms... when originally promised 12). The prices kept fluctuating, and room availability kept decreasing after being "guarenteed" a certain number of rooms up front. The general manager straight up told me on the phone "I hate weddings." I feel like if people like this work there, they are in the wrong business. Also, my credit card information was "lost" when a special guest of mine checked-in under my information. They made her leave her credit card information while pending what mine was (again). I was very disappointed that this process wasn't smooth for our honourable guests. Good location, cheap and clean. The room we got had a fireplace, microwave, fridge, and two queens for $119 on a Saturday night, $109 on Sunday. The office sells aquarium tickets for the same price you can get a one day ticket at the aquarium, but it's a better deal because it is good for TWO days and you get to skip the line! That was great. They also have a long list of DVDs you can get from the office for no charge. The downsides: The walls were so thin we could hear the alarm clock in the room next door which was left on and went on so long we eventually called the front desk to turn it off. This happened the next day too. We put a "do not disturb" sign on the door, but the maid knocked and disturbed us until we yelled "yes?!" anyway. The shower temperature was inconsistent and kept getting colder and colder and was never actually hot. The TV was very fuzzy so we watched our movies through a blizzard. Overall it was acceptable, and since it's one of the cheaper options in the area it was worth the inconveniences. The beds were very comfy so we slept well. read more

Who knew the Colton Inn is the hot spot to stay in Monterey?! This place is cute, convenient to downtown restaurants & shopping, and reasonably priced with a AAA discount. I reserved a room with 2 queen beds and our room also had an extra futon, table with chairs, balcony, fridge & microwave. Even though we were only 3, 6 people could have fit comfortably in this room. Free breakfast here- fruit, coffee, oatmeal, pastries, tea and they had nutella for my bagel! The office has cookies & coffee all day as well. This place also has a movie list that easily rivals netflix. Why should you care about the Colton Inn's movie list, you ask? Well after you've spent a day wandering around cannery row, driving the 17 mile drive, dining on delish seafood and throwing back a couple bottles of wine, you will be really excited to come back to the room and pass out to a good movie. You can borrow 3 at a time and I was stoked to finally get to see Julie & Julia. Coming back to Monterey, I would def. stay here again! read more

My boyfriend and I drove up the coast from LA, and arrived late in Monterey. Checking Yelp, we found this to be the best rated $$ hotel. I called up, and was offered the last room available at $130/night (with AAA discount). I asked about the room and was told it was "basic"... bed, bathroom, tv, the usual. So imagine my boyfriend an my surprise when we discover a freakin' hot tub patio attached to our room! What? Why not tell us, as a selling point? The hot tub was pretty awesome, the rooms clean, and we appreciated the free DVD rentals at the desk, and free continental breakfast. Why not 5 stars then? Sparse parking, outdated decor, harder mattress and lumpy pillows, mismatched little bottles of shampoo and soap, and odd customer service. This was what we found in our very short stay: Pros: * Affordable Cons: * Lobby/guest services not open 24/7 (which means, you better remember to bring toothpaste) * As sketchy-looking as on the outside as it does on the inside * Room smelled like potent, old musty, rotting furniture the second we walked in * Dirty rooms: white crusty spots on the pillows, stains on the bedsheets, rust on the ceilings--no attention to detail here, clearly * Fire place filled with soot and did not looked properly maintained--hello carbon monoxide poisoning anybody? * THE SHOWER HEAD DID NOT WORK When we discovered that our only choice was to clean ourselves in an inn's bath tub, it was game over. There was no one at the lobby to complain to, so we ended up calling Expedia to get our money back. Save yourself the time and hassle and go to the Holiday Inn Express an exit away, where it was affordable, clean, had Bath and Body toiletries, and a 24/7 lobby. read more

Pros: Easy check in/check out, provided breakfast and cookies at check in, walkable to the wharf and local restaurants and shops, quick response to maintenance needs Cons: dated rooms, difficulty booking with a wedding block My husband and I stayed here for three nights while attending a wedding on the beach. The staff was very friendly, but my husband had a difficult time booking our rooms initially because we were trying to book with a block. He wasn't getting phone calls returned in a timely fashion. Once we had our rooms booked it was relatively smooth sailing. We had cookie provided to us at check in which is a win for me! They also had a nice little breakfast spread so that's a nice little money saver. The location of this motel is great because it's located near a bunch of little restaurants so if you don't want to take advantage of their breakfast you still have lots of close options. Our first morning at the motel our shower was not heating properly. It was far too cold to shower in, but they sent someone up quickly and the problem was resolved by the time we came back to the room in the afternoon. It wasn't a big deal since we could wait to shower, but would have been an inconvenience if we needed to shower before leaving that morning. All in all I would recommend the Colton to anyone visiting Monterey. It has a nice location (I'd say it's a 15 minute walk to the wharf and beach), plenty of parking and provides breakfast. read more

We stayed here for our annual trek to Monterey to watch the MotoGP races, and we were pleasantly surprised! They offered fairly good prices, considering that most hotels were gouging people upwards in the $300 range per night in downtown Monterey. The room was huge, contained a microwave, fridge and comfy king sized bed. The location was perfect - walking distance to some really wonderful restaurants and bars and a quick ride to Cannery Row. The staff was friendly and warm, and they always have some tasty treats in the front reception area to tempt you with along with complimentary breakfast in the mornings. I think we'll be back next year! read more

Due to poor planning on our part, my boyfriend and I drove into Monterey without room reservations on Memorial Day weekend. Michael, in the visitors center recommended Colton Inn. The place is very cozy. Nice, clean, comfy. No extra amenities. Colton Inn's is a short driving distance to the wharf. Doorbell Dining will bring take-out food to your door. They have DVD players in the room but their DVD selection isn't that great. Breakfast left lots to be desired. Only pastries, cold cereal, fruit, and coffee. We'd stay here again. We stayed here for a night during our visit to Monterey. I was pleasantly surprised with how big, clean, and cozy this inn was. There was a fire place in our room and we had a view overlooking the balcony area outside. The location was also central to the Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf. Would definitely be back! read more

Definitely a great place!! Not too close to all the hustle and bustle. Fireplace in the room. HUGE selection of DVDs to "rent" at the front desk. 2 for the price of 1 day tickets to the Aquarium. Very reasonably priced. Hope to return soon! :-D read more

We'll Stay Again Great place ! We had a large corner room overlooking a tree lined intersection and the high school across the street. The room had a very comfortable bed (with nice linens), a refrigerator, microwave, a fireplace, two sinks, and a large bathroom. A good continental breakfast was served in the lobby, with snacks and hot beverages available all other times. Not being cable TV fans, the large free DVD library was a definite plus. The motel was clean, felt safe, and had a pleasant atmosphere. Also, we found it to be a great value so close to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row. We'll be back! read more

If you want to receive great service, this is NOT the place to go. After driving hours to Monterey we expected to be welcomed, as any paying customer would, right? Well that didn't happen here. A couple hours before showing up, I called the hotel because we had last minute picked up my sister in law to take her with us and they said no more than two people and we understood and we're okay with that. My sister booked a room at Casa Munras and since we were all together, we went to check in at Colton Inn first and then were going to take her to her hotel. My boyfriend went to check in and he came back to the car saying the desk guy was very assertive on reminding him that the room is only for two people. While we were getting out of the car, the desk guy came running towards us from behind some cars in the lot while yelling, "Didn't I just tell you that the room was only for two people? What are you guys doing?" I assured him that we're just unloading and asked if it was so wrong to have a guest in a room we paid for. He said "well.. no" then walked away. After getting to our room we were just so upset and confused about why we were being treated so poorly by this employee. At this point we decided to join our sister at Casa Munras because we weren't comfortable here. Casa Munras upgraded her room and was very friendly, fun, and accommodating. We unfortunately couldn't get a refund because we booked the room on Expedia but decided we'd rather lose out on the money than be in such an uncomfortable environment. It was so worth it and next time we visit Monterey we will definitely be returning to Casa Munras, an establishment that actually provides good service to their customers. Colton Inn was far from the friendly, welcoming experience you'd expect to receive on your vacation. This is actually the first yelp review I've ever written and it's just because of how upsetting this situation was for us. read more

I dunno, it just wasn't all that & a bag of Doritos. Did I have a bad room? Was it bad luck? Was it on a full moon? How I hate to break the trend here.. Shall we start with the goods.. The PEEPS: The lady Miss Pauline from the island of Fiji is sooo sweet. Upon arrival there was a flurry of busyness, she balanced it w/ a huge smile, multitasks all of us effeciently, remembered to offer the 4 page list of 8 font dvds they offer (even had Avatar my fave movie) We rented Aristocats, the 5 people you meet in heaven & g-force (we have kids can u tell?). The manager Jane discovered that hotels.com messed up on my hotel, claiming the crib was included n other mishaps, but they didn't Despite that, Jane hoooked it up for free & even gave us the bigger room since that's what hotls said came included. Good job on that one. The FOODS: The other peeps was right: 13 cereals! Yep. That is right. Nutella spread, hot chocolate, green tea (& at lest 4 more kinds), all kinds of doughy items sure enough to put a ring around the midsection, coffee, coffee milky flavorings, oatmeal, hmm did I leave anything out? The SPOT: Is drivable distance from everythingin Monterey & Carmel. Its situated a few turns from the main street, forgot what its called, starts with an "M". Its near a school. Not a lot of flowers or aesthetic pleasure on the outside. Resembles a motelish type vibe. The first room that we got had a stove, pots (if u call ahead to reserve em), a fridge, table, dresser, the lanai aka balcony was nice! It was too small for us though so we moved to a diff room that had all of the above minus the stove. Our 2nd room even had a firlog/fireplace! The first may have cant remember. So if it sounds good why am i giving 3 stars? Well..the place is pretty worn to me. I mean the pix look good n all but it seemed dark, & a lil drab grey on the outside. The inside just felt like an old motel that they tried best to look nice. Dont get me wrong, for the price its ok. But the reviews made it sound like it was 4 star @ a 2 star price & that wasnt the case for me. Would I stay again? No. But dont go on account to me. I think this place is just OK, not terrible, just not "me". I've stayed in fabulous places in Carmel & I think bcuz of that I set my bars a lil high. This place just wasnt my style. read more
