A solid com tam place in the Bay Area! portions, taste, pricing is great here! I got com tam thit nuong, and it comes with a bunch of other proteins and sides. I was very surprised at the large sizing of this plate the picture does not do it justice! I shared this dish with my partner and we were super full afterwards. The fried shrimp cake has a super crispy coating, so crispy it was flakey! It's hard to get this one right, and this restaurant nailed it. The shrimp on the sugarcane was marinated so well so much flavor seeped through this! This is a very classic Vietnamese restaurant, don't expect the interior to be nice. As long as you are getting good food that's all that matters!
this used to be my family's go to spot 15-20 years ago but for some reason we stopped coming here. i recently came back with my mom and it hit the spottttt. it was delicious and nostalgic and the portion size was massive. i'll always come back to a spot that makes my mom happy :))
When I first arrived to the parking lot, I was nervous about the location. Lots of people in the parking lot being belligerent. I chose a table where I could watch my car, just for own peace of mind. The location may not be great but the food is fantastic. We came in close to closing and the food still came out piping hot and fresh. The stand out item on the plate for me was an item called Tau Hu Ky. It's a recognizable item within a com tam plate but this was my first time having the tofu skin wrapper taste so delicate and fried so crisp! The shrimp on the inside was very juicy and plump. Overall I was impressed with every item on my plate but the wrapped shrimp was my favorite. There was also a skewer of BBQ shrimp!! I would definitely come back to order another rice plate if I'm in the area! The food quality is well worth it and the portions are massive
First time here and I was not disappointed. To start with, let's talk about flavor. Everything in my order tasted amazing, from the richness of the short ribs to the outstanding crunch of the egg cake, paired with pickled onions, carrots and daikon. Good portion size , not to much and not to little . Service was good. With a smile, the man who brought me my food told me to enjoy my dinner. I could tell he genuinely ment it and was proud of serving me that plate. This is a restaurant that sets the tone of your experience with their food alone. I'm definitely going back to try more of their food when I can.
BE CAREFUL ORDERING HERE. I had ordered the Com Tam Thit Nuong Bị Cha on DoorDash. I took a first bite of the rice and it tasted very off. I said ok maybe it had the smokey flavor from the thit nuong (grilled meat). It wasn't until I mixed up my rice and underneath had this very gray looking liquid, thinking it was maybe the oil from the charred meat, IT WAS GASOLINE!! After I mixed the bottom up you can smell the gas. My meat had a strong gas taste. My sister got grilled shrimp and you can taste the strong gas smell on hers too. I don't know if they used gasoline to replenish their grill to grill stuff but I had to toss the entire thing & submitted photos to DoorDash for a refund. The smell & taste lingered in my mouth for so long!!
This restaurant is a must visit for your com tam. It's no frills, just good food and good service- everything that is a sign for a classic, well done Vietnamese restaurant. We got a few different dishes of the com tam but my favorite is always com tam thit nuong. They do season it a bit salty so don't throw all your nuoc mam on it before you taste it. The serving sizes are also huge so order knowing you'll probably take some home.
Coming back to this restaurant recently was like a time machine back to my childhood. I remember every time I come, I would see the cloud formed from grilling the meat. As we enter, it still had the same interior, for better or worst. The server took a while to came. We ordered the combination plate #7. The meat was cooked fine but could had more of a char taste to it and it felt a bit more on the wet side. The crispy tofu with shrimp was crispy with more meat than I thought, compared to Com Tam Thien Huong The bi had more meat over the fat ratio which was nice. The cha was more on the salty side unfortunately. The sugar cane shrimp tasted just alright as it needed to be cooked a bit more. Overall, it was a decent meal, but I wasn't blown away by it. Overall, it was ok but I am not dying to come back here.
No frill com tam (broken rice plate). Broken rice is a vietnamese rice plate that uses broken rice (tiny rice) that you usually mix with fish oil (you don't have to but I like it that way). The rice plate typically comes with pork chop, egg cake, shrimp cake etc. This place is inside a strip mall and there really isn't much deco but it's clean and that's good enough. A lot of rice plate places are called Com Tam Thanh but so I can see why this is named such way. I think the pork chop here is bigger than the others but the other stuff such as egg cakes are not as good (but close enough). It's not particularly cheaper than other places but the best part is that this is also not as crowded as the more popular broken rice places. Service is good enough for such simple place. The place is bigger than I expected.
Given the plethora of Vietnamese restaurants in, and around, San Jose, I'm genuinely surprised I had never come across a place like Com Tam Dat Thanh before. Tons of banh mi shops and pho joints are around, yet I'd never seen one before that specializes in broken rice plates. So, just for that reason alone, it's not hard to see why I was so excited to come here! Of course, it's not just that they seem to be the only one - the fact that the Yelp reviews are so positive certainly doesn't hurt either! Pulling into the complex, I was quick to discover that my fellow Yelpers weren't lying - parking here can be tough. Although we were able to snag a spot almost immediately, we saw a few cars having to do a few loops around the lot and/or stalk folks walking to their spaces (the lot emptied out a bit by the time we left, though). As far as the menu goes, it was actually kind of weird to see how it's the reverse of what I'm used to - a ridiculously wide range of rice dishes flanked by just a handful of noodle soups and apps to choose from. In fact, there are so many options, you'll find pretty much every type of meat, and combination thereof, you can think of - BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, BBQ shrimp, BBQ pork, BBQ pork chop, BBQ beef ribs, and so much more. -- (#68) MOT PHAN NEM NUONG - Grilled Pork Rolls...$6.50 I've definitely had better, but this was solid, especially for the money. The pork felt closer to grilled pork than sausage, but I liked how juicy it was and the thickness of the cut. The dipping sauce was just okay, but it also didn't need to be amazing, either. -- (#31) COM TAM BO NUONG, TOM NUONG - Rice with BBQ Beef & BBQ Shrimp...$14.75 Honestly? Underwhelming. In terms of taste, the beef was solid - tender and well seasoned (the lemongrass wasn't overpowering). However, the shrimp had an odd texture for being "BBQ" and, while I get it's partly due to getting two meats, this felt incredibly light on beef (just three small pieces??). -- (#1) COM TAM NEM NUONG, TAU HU KY, BI, CHA, TOM NUONG, CHAO TOM - Rice with Broiled Meatballs, Fried Shrimp Cake, Shredded Pork Skin, Egg Cake, BBQ Shrimp, and Grilled Shrimp Meat on Sugarcane...$22.50 Compared to our other dish, this was ridiculously generous, but each item was hit or miss. The meatballs were rubbery (frozen?), and the BBQ shrimp felt off, but everything else was pretty good. In particular, I loved the fried shrimp cake (so crispy!) and the grilled shrimp meat on the sugarcane (juicy). While the food was mostly decent overall, service here wasn't too shabby either. I know some folks have had less than stellar experiences, but I thought the server (owner?) was nice and our food came out fairly quickly. That being said, and despite how many stars I'm giving, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here again. Besides how small one of our dishes was and those disappointing meatballs, none of what we ordered tasted significantly better than what I've had elsewhere. Perhaps I'd feel differently if I lived out this way, but if I'm making the drive down from SF, I'd rather explore one of the many other Vietnamese restaurants in the South Bay instead. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up.
We ordered the #2 - Com Tam Thit Nuong (Rice plate with BBQ Pork, Fried Shrimp Cake, etc.) and #73 - Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio (BBQ Pork and Egg Rolls). The sauce and chili is self-serve on the table. I added about half the spoon of chili to my sauce, which gave it a kick. Loved the sauce, nice and savory, slighlty sweet, but not too sweet. The rice plate was delicious, everything was well executed. The pork was slightly on the sweet side, but packed with flavor. It had a nice charred BBQ taste to it. The egg cake was fluffy and had a light taste paired with the sauce was great. The BBQ shrimp was cooked perfect still juicy with a plump texture. The marinated had a sweetness to it and the grill gave it a nice hint of smoky char. The fried Shrimp Cake light and crispy, full of flavor, on the savory side. Grilled Shrimp meat on Sugar was savory. The shredded pork was okay, I could do without it. I didn't try asking for substitute, but next time I would try substituting for BBQ pork instead. It also comes with soup, it was a nice palate cleanser, very strong and savory flavor. The dish did a good job at balancing the sweet and savory flavors. (5 out of 5) The Vermicelli Pork and Egg Roll was also delicious. Same pork was used for the rice dish. The egg roll used a different type of wrapper than the traditional egg roll. It gave it a more light and crispy texture which I liked. The filling was also packed with meat and flavor. Everything was well executed and flavorful. The dishes were on the sweet and savory side. The portion size for the rice plate was massive, I was very stuffed after finishing.
My friends and I came here for dinner on a Friday evening. Parking in this plaza is pretty tight. We luckily found parking, but I can see the lot being completely full during busy times. Food: This restaurant has vegetarian versions of many common com tam plates, which was very exciting for me. I ordered the vegetarian com tam combo plate and the vegetarian nem nuong rolls. Both items came with vegetarian sauces made with veggie fish sauce. They were both great. My friends ordered the main combo plate and enjoyed their food. Service: Service was quick. I've been on a mission as of late to try as many Vietnamese bbq pork chop broken rice dishes as I can, and this place was at the top of my list. There isn't as many com tam places near me that serve actual broken rice instead of regular so you know I had to make the drive. I walked in and ordered at the counter. I do have to say, every person working in the restaurant was extremely friendly and nice. They greeted me as I walked in and as I was leaving and we even cracked a few jokes as I was ordering. All in all good experience so far. The food came out fast and I definitely liked how they packaged the shredded pork and veggies on the side instead of inside the actual box. First impression was man, I am definitely not going to be able to finish it in one go. The pork chop and shrimp was nicely grilled and had that nice charred flavor. Both proteins were savory and hints of sweetness from the fish sauce just dances on your tongue as you chew. The fried shrimp cake was slightly soggy but that was a given considering it was in the box while hot, but the flavors and crispiness was still preserved throughout the skin. The egg cake I really enjoyed, perfect texture savoriness level. Broken rice was on point as well and everything came together nicely with the fish sauce. read more

I was near San Jose CA the other day and I was craving for some good Vietnamese com tam( broken rice dish). I came across Com Tam Dat Thanh using yelp but at the end I was a bit disappointed. The 2 broken rice dish I bought that cost almost $40.00 was not worth my time or my money. I know running a business is costly for the owners but paying nearly almost $40.00 for 2 broken rice dish you guys are very skimpy on the portions compared to other com tam places. You know what they say a pictures is worth of thousand of words but in this case it is worth a thousand of disappointment. The older gentleman took my order was nice but oversold his story about them being top com tam restaurant in town. My favorite com tam place is in Garden Grove CA com tam Thanh Kieu but lately their flavor and quality is not up to par but portion wise is on point and very affordable. 3/5 the 2 broken rice dish was skimpy with their tiny portions and sub par quality nothing really stood out or a wow factor. Service 4/5 fast & friendly service but mainly it has to do more of the food. Location 3/5 it kinda looks like a rough neighborhood it's best to bring someone with you. There's gotta be a much better Com Tam restaurant here in San Jose CA where you get more for your hard earned money. I will be back in the Bay Area once the Shelter in place is lifted and will work hard actually eat hard lol to find you the best Com Tam Restaurant in San Jose CA. read more
I haven't had an actual rice plate from this location since I was like .. 5. Now a days my family and I buy their marinated and grilled pork chops + some Bi (shredded pork skin). Since we're Viet, we can supplement a lot of the missing elements of a Com Tam dish with what we have at home already. The result? See pic. }:) It's about $4 per pork chop!! Totally worth it. Get a plate if you don't have stuff at home to add in. I think it's more economical than Dat Thanh, which are starting to charge an arm and leg for most things. read more

I've been frequenting another com tam joint in Little Saigon, but figured I should give this place some love after many years of coming here as a kid. Parking is tough so I would recommend carpooling if you can. The lady here who took our order was the sweetest and was showering us with hospitality. We ordered their grilled pork spring rolls and each got broken rice platter. I ordered a rice platter that came with a pork chop, fried shrimp cake, shredded pork, and an egg cake. Their sugar cane shrimp cake and fried shrimp cake are amazing so make sure to try those here! Com tam just never fails to hit the spot! read more
BEST COM TAM PLACE IN SAN JOSE. ----------CASH ONLYYYY----------I am not a rice person (yeah, gasp away), so rarely would I even contemplate eating this dish when I'm around the distant, but glowing food province that is San Jose/ Little Saigon!!!!!! However, this place always stands out.. I took my visiting family here and they were all pretty impressed by the dishes. RECOMMENDATIONS (for non-viets/ first com tam eaters): - Are you just REALLY hungry? Is it your first time and do you want to try a bit of everything? GO FOR THE huge ass #7 ($15) w/ the Galbi beef. So very good and worth it. - Are you just hungry and don't have a huge appetite, but really wanna try the traditional spread that Saigon people usually eat? GO WITH NUMBER 56 ($10.45). Still very good sized portion (not as big as the combos...) and you'll have a lot of variety on your place hehe!!! Food is as good as ever.. after numerous visits, this place remains as my go-to spot for Vietnamese broken rice dishes. In my most recent visit (during Covid times), I ordered takeout: #83 egg rolls (these are crispy fried rolls stuffed w/ pork), #12 bbq pork chop rice & fried shrimp cake, and #53 bbq pork chop rice w/ shredded pork skin & fried shrimp cake. For takeout orders, the veggies (lettuce & pickled carrots/daikon) & shredded pork skin are packaged in ziploc bags. The food here is consistently delicious! My favorite has always been the fried shrimp cake w/ the crispy beancurd skin although the crispy egg rolls are also amazing as is the pork chop because of the grilled flavor. Their portions are pretty large & they don't skimp simply because it's a takeout order. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised that they threw in an extra egg cake (not really a cake but a savory dish of steamed egg & meat mixture)! They're taking Covid safety measures by offering limited indoor & outdoor seating, displaying covid safety signage, placing hand sanitizers next to a set of menus for takeout orders, & wearing masks. They accept credit cards. We ordered takeout & stepped outside to wait and our food was ready in about 10 mins. While we waited, a few people popped in to pick up their takeout orders. Delivery is also available since there was a table marked for Uber Express & DoorDash orders. Glad this restaurant is still around! Hopefully business picks up so that this restaurant stays in business for a long time. read more

Stopped by after a hike around 2 PM and the waiters are very attentive! My friend and I ordered the com tam plates & a drink each. Com Tam Thit Nuong Dac Biet: 4/5 * Super generous portion and lasts two meals for about $20. I thought it was better than the average broken rice plate but I've had better. I think heating it up would have been better; some of the food was lukewarm. I really enjoyed the soup it came with though, not too salty and so refreshing to eat with the rice plate. Would get it if I was in the area but wouldn't drive out of my way for it! Salted Plum Drink: 4/5 * SOOO refreshing after sweating during my hike, definitely gives all the electrolytes back. It was quite sweet but I loved that sweet and salty combo. read more
Very delicious rice plates from Com Tam Dat Thanh! I would highly recommend ordering a rice plate with crispy shrimp cakes and shrimp paste wrapped around sugar cane. Pro-Tip: don't forget to bite and suck on the sugar cane after you eat the shrimp paste. If you haven't tried a shrimp cake before, THIS IS A MUST EAT! It's truly such a delight to eat here. The layers of tofu on the outside are crispy, flaky and so good. The meat on the inside is flavorful and warm. Definitely recommend this SJ spot! read more

I've been going here since I was a kid for rice plates. My go-to is suon nuong (grilled pork chop) with tau hu ky (bean curd skin with shrimp). The pork here is great and smokey and the tau hu ky is perfectly crisp and seasoned. It's hands-down the BEST Viet rice plates in San Jose! read more

This place isn't the same anymore. Parking use to be a bee, but the last several times have been easy peasy. There use to be a wait to eat or at least half the restaurant would be full, but now we get seated right away. The last time I went... my boyfriend and I were the only people there. Since my bf has never been here, but has heard so much about it, we figured we could stop by for a late lunch. Service is what you would expect at most Asian restaurants in SJ... you ask they deliver, but don't expect too much. We ordered a nem nuong cuon for appetizer and com tam suong, cha, tau hu ky (pork chop, pork cake, fried shrimp cake w/ broken rice) to share. First of all, portions are wayyyy smaller then before. Second, they no longer leave the pickled veggies out. They give you some one the rice plate, and you just have to ask if you want more. Food is still good, but I feel there's better food being that it's SJ. There's many other places I'd rather eat if I'm going to drive all the way out there. read more

My favorite com tam place in San Jose!!! (And I've been to a lot). I always get the #19 as the Suon Nuong (grilled pork chop) is absolutely delicious and is a perfect portion size. My favorite part of the dish though is the Chao Tom (grilled shrimp on sugarcane) - it's so flavorful and is definitely the best one I've had before. I got mine with an egg added on top because I love my rice with eggs and this one did not disappoint. My friend got Combo #5 which is Com Tam Bo Nuong (bbq beef). My friend can eat a very solid amount of food and was completely stuffed after finishing his meal. It also comes with Chao Tom, along with other good stuff like BBQ shrimp and fried shrimp cake. He thoroughly enjoyed this dish as well! Service was efficient and we were seated quickly even though it was busy inside. Food came out in no time too! I recommend this place to anyone looking for a com tam restaurant in San Jose!! read more
After years of business, quality remains. Hooray!! Back in school days, my family and I would come here as a treat/family outing. I remember each time being a wonderful experience. It's where I developed my love for Vietnamese broken rice (com tam) and my top go-to dishes when ordering Vietnamese. If you hadn't tried this dish, I highly recommend you do! Today, I drive my dog and our cactus in an attempt to relocate ourselves from San Diego to Seattle and food is the only stop we could afford to make and Com Tam Dat Thanh is option I made. This is San Jose, land of good Vietnamese and Mexican foods! My favorites are their Shredded pork (bi), shrimp cake (tau hu ky), fried shrimp wrap (chao tom), and egg cakes (cha). Don't forget the fried egg! They do it perfectly here :) It is a bit high in sodium, their meats. You can request for low sodium but please understand most things are already marinated. I add vinegar or lime juices to my fish sauce in addition to the low sodium request. You can always go easy with the fish sauce, too. Enjoy! read more
Legit OG Vietnamese com tam bi place! BBQ meats such as BBQ pork are so good! ^_^ All their rice plates are very good. Just be sure to pour a lot of nuoc mam (fish sauce) on to the broken rice, since that is how you are supposed to eat this dish doused in nuoc mam! YUMMY!!! Pickled leek are good too! Everytime you pass by Tully Road, you see the plumes of BBQ smoke and the aroma of oh so delicious goodies! ^_^ Swing by or make that U-turn. Hehehe. Yummy and healthy broken rice plates are one of my favorite go to! Com Tam Dat Thanh is located off Tully road, it is in a smaller plaza but it has designated parking spots for you. I came in on a Friday at 5pm with a friend it was really empty. The waiter spoke to me in Vietnamese and said I could sit anywhere. He gave us time and was attentive when he took our order. There an lot of different combinations of rice plates, you just have to choose what you are craving. I always choose a plate with an egg cake! The meal also comes with a soup on the side, I usually put in my leftover rice in that at the end. This place also takes card unlike many other Vietnamese places I've been to, so don't be scared to go in if you don't have cash on you! read more

Incredible combo w/fish sauce and pickled veggies. * Juicy crispy huge Vietnamese deep fried shrimp rolls * Bottles of fish sauce self-serve, sooo good with the rice. * Perfectly seasoned BBQ pork and porkchop - I liked both, preferred the chop with rice because it was different. * Crunchy egg rolls in the bun. * $4 for delicious, fresh, flavorful grilled pork spring rolls. New place for com tam! I came here this past weekend and really enjoyed the food. Parking is not too bad but only downside is that it's CASH ONLY... Prices are decent for the amount of food you get. I tell ya, don't judge a restaurant by its outside, it may look older, but this place knows how to make rice plates.... We ordered simply 2 rice plates, mine was pork chops and egg cake, my friends got the bbq pork..... We went at it like nothing else, it was good... God damn Com Tam! Com Tam basically stands for "broken rice" in Vietnamese. I've heard so many good things about this place for their Com Tam that I had to try it for myself. And if my mom loves this place AND my Vietnamese boyfriend then you know it's freaking good. Com Tam is located in a small small plaza with limited parking spaces. I usually get lucky with a parking spot so I suggest you come around a good time :) Service here is quick as well! I decided to take my mom here for Mother's Day because she was craving Com Tam and this ended up to be the place to go! She instantly fell in love. My mom is a picky eater and she usually loves Asian food (of course...) so I wasn't as hesitant in taking her here :) It was either go big or go home and oh we went big alright! My mom and I both ordered a Special Rice Combination plate which has a choice of your meat and it comes with everything else they have...Fried Shrimp Cakes, Shredded Pork Skins, BBQ Shrimp, and Grilled Shrimp on Sugarcane. We ended up splitting our meats because we wanted to try both :) Everything tasted sooooo damn good. The second time I came with the bf and he loved it as well! So far I've tried their Broiled Meatballs, BBQ Beef, and their BBQ Beef Ribs. I think I will try their pork next time :P So far I fell in love with their BBQ Beef Ribs :) I definitely suggest this place for good Com Tam! Their Special Rice Combination is a bit pricey (~$14/$15) but if you want a smaller plate with a few of their sides then those are around $9/$10. I recommend just getting their combo plates since you can try everything they have; gotta have the full experience ;) Plus they give you A LOT of food (bowl of soup comes with every plate) and I didn't even end up finishing it (I'm a fatass too).
