    The five classic pho
    Mileydi A.

This was our first time visiting Pho Garlic after seeing a video on social media and reading several positive reviews that made the restaurant look very appealing. We ordered two bowls of the Five Classic Pho. Unfortunately, when our food arrived, it had a very strong and unpleasant meat odor that made us hesitate before even taking a bite. The only highlights of the meal were the fresh noodles and the meatballs. Other than that, the smell of the broth made it difficult to enjoy the pho. During our visit, there were no other customers in the restaurant. Although we understand there was only one employee working at the time, we weren't checked on even once and only received attention when we asked for more water. One thing to keep in mind is that the restaurant is located on a very busy street, so parking can be a little challenging. There is a two-hour parking lot behind the restaurant, which is helpful. This is simply my personal experience based on what we ordered. Other dishes on the menu may be much better, so if you're curious, it may still be worth trying for yourself. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we don't think we'll be returning.

Stumbled across this place on Yelp and we gave it a try. The pho broth was savory, and the garlic chili oil and pickled garlic was also bomb! A must try when craving for pho or Viet comfort food!

Very nice waiter, pretty fast. Got the rare beef pho and the beef was very beefy and thick cut which is just some people's preference

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Hidden gem! Parking is located in the back of the plaza. Very spacious inside and the broth of the pho is perfect. The bo vien here has a lot of flavor! The worker (who I assume is the owner) asked us if the food was great and it was! He told us to spread the word of this place and I encourage everyone to come try it out!

IMHO I finally had the chance to try Pho Garlic. Pho Garlic is located across from James Lick H.S. and down the corner from Starbucks. Parking is scarce in front, but we parked behind the establishment. I was pleased to see a few occupied tables inside when we arrived. We ordered the Basil Popcorn Chicken, $7.50, the Special Combo Pho w/filet mignon, brisket, beef ribs, and meatballs, $19, and the Garlicky Chicken Roti Noodles, $17. Let's talk pho. My sister really liked the broth, but I thought it was just okay. I expected an umami power punch, but it wasn't there for me. Usually, in other pho restaurants, the pho is accompanied by a plateful stacked high with Thai basil leaves, cilantro, and bean sprouts to add to your soup. Pho Garlic offered a plate with some sprouts and two basil stalks, some pepper slices and a lemon wedge. My sister would've preferred more herbs and cilantro. She also desired more noodles in her soup. There is a list of additional add-ons one can order for an extra $1-4 per side. In hindsight, we should've ordered extra noodles when we first ordered. If we ever return, we'll do that. The popcorn chicken came out hot. It was good. My garlicky chicken roti noodles were also good. The restaurant ambiance was bright and cheerful. Service was very friendly and genuine, but sometimes slow. Will we return? Maybe.

If you're looking for some unique pho, Pho Garlic may be a place to try. They have a variety of pho, a few other dishes, appetizers, and drinks. Items were hit or miss. Customer service was nice and sweet. The restaurant seemed to have been revamped or have a new menu now. I saw other reviews mentioning other dishes such as Bun Bo Hue, but they were no longer serving them. Check the attached menu pictures for the latest items. * Rare Beef & Meatball Pho (Pho Tai Bo Vien) 4/5 - This is your regular pho with rare beef and meatballs. The rare beef was a bit tough. The meatballs were a bit fatty. The broth was pretty good, though not the most flavorful I've had. * Rare Beef Pho (Pho Tai) 3.5/5 - This tasted the same as the Pho Tai Bo Vien. The downside was that this had the same amount of rare beef, but without the meatballs. You get less meat with this one, so I'd get the one with meatballs in addition instead. * Spicy Sate Pho 1/5 - Sate can mean skewered meat or chili sauce. This dish was neither, unfortunately. It tasted like pho submerged in grainy coconut cream. Really fatty and weird flavor. I think if it was just a spicy chili pho, it would have been better. Not sure where the thick coconut cream base came from. * Shrimp Tom Yum Pho (Pho Tom Chua Cay) 5/5 - This was like pho noodles in a Thai Tom Yum soup/hot pot broth. It was actually pretty good. The shrimps were also delicious. * Egg Roll 3/5 - Tasted okay. Not a lot of meat. There were more vegetables and potatoes. * Thai Green Tea 5/5 - This was really tasty and refreshing with the right amount of sweetness. * House Milk Tea 4/5 - This was pretty good. * Thai Tea 3/5 - Tasted kinda off, not like the regular Thai tea.

I've been here a couple times now and it's alright but not the best and portions are quite small and can be kinda pricy. The meat here is usually a bit tough so I opted for the meatball and rare steak and it only came with a tiny bit of steak and the meatball bits were so small. I like that they give lots of variety for sauces so that's a plus but they give very little bean sprouts and herbs. I also give options for fresh noodles, regular, and egg noodles. My boyfriend had the sate pho and it was not that flavorful and again the brisket and meat were a bit tough. Probably won't be back unless I'm really craving pho and nothing else is open

Amazing service from the sweetest / most attentive employees. Haven't had a delicious simple bowl of pho in a long time. The "nuoc beo" or green onion oil is delicious!! Broth is light yet flavorful. People complaining about the chunks of meat not knowing this is pretty normal option in northern Pho (tho I don't think this place is northern style). Meat is tender and delicious nevertheless. Picked garlic and pickled sweet chili they have is BOMB!!!!!

Great food. The broth is simmered for 24 hours!!! There is public parking in the back, so don't be wary of the lack of street parking.

Today, I'm in the South Bay Area. I see this all the time, everytime I'm in Alum Rock. I'm here at Phở Garlic this Friday at Noon. For Garlicky Phở, this is where I want to be at. They got something, that I don't really see at similiar Shops. They call it The Classic Five Phở Năm Loại, it has Filet Mignon, Brisket, Gân, and Bò Viên, so that's what I got. The Beef is High-quality. I really like this version, I like the Pickled Garlic, it adds just enough contrast and texture. I was thinking this was going to be a 3.8-4.3 stars, this could be a 4.3 stars on a good day, I want to give this a 4.3 stars, but I give this 4.2/4.3 stars out of 5 stars. That was some good Phở Noodles.

Stopped in for lunch on Tuesday and we were the only 2 customers at 12pm. Shortly, another 2 customers arrived and got their pho bowls before us. Our 2 bowls of pho with fresh noodles took over 15 mins to come out after placing the order. They also forgot our lychee tea until we were halfway done eating. We flagged them down to ask for status and the server said he forgot. They were graciously accommodating our substitution requests. -Special Combo A Pho (5/5): Substituted meatballs for tendons. Very tender short rib and plenty of rare beef & brisket. -Seafood Tom Yum Pho (3.5/5): Substituted Tom Yum broth with pho beef broth. -Lychee Tea (4/5): Initially wasn't sweet enough, but they added more syrup which made it better. Fresh, good-looking herbs (basil, bean sprouts, lemon wedges, and sliced jalapeños) on the side accompanied the pho. Table condiments included (housemade?) Lemongrass Sauté, Sriracha, Hoisin, Shaved Garlic in vinegar, Fish Sauce, and Soy Sauce. Sauté was basically lemongrass in oil, no pepper spice to it. Clean dining area, friendly customer service. Women's restroom reeked! Think it's plumbing issues. Held my breath to wash my hands before digging into the herbs. Not much parking space in front (a lot of red and green zones). Would go back if I'm in the area, but not worth the drive from the East bay. There's comparable Vietnamese restaurants near me.

Rare Beef w meatball 12/10. truly balanced in flavour and style. paired this with yellow noodle. weekdays serve fresh noodle. very kind and humble folk. also curious to try the duck pho upon my next visit. The restaurant has a good seating and holds numerous condiments for your pho.

Seems to be a new restaurant, we tried visiting during Chinese new year and they were closed. We finally managed to dine in a week later. Restaurant is new and clean. There was only one server and one cook when we visited. Parking is at the back. Though there was just another table that was occupied when we visited, our order of two pho bowls took around 20 mins. I personally got a veggie pho, it was made with chicken stock and a garden variety of veggies. Think of any veggie and you could find it in the bowl. Given how long they took to make it, it was obvious they made it right there and then and took their time with it. I was suffering from a cold and the chicken stock lifted my spirits. The veggies were an absolute delight, each veggie was cooked to perfection. And this is amazing as the cook time for each veggie is different. This is something I can eat everyday if they can make it for me. Healthy and yet so flavorful. I Ofcourse spiced it up with the sauces at the tableside. The service was painfully slow but food was great and fresh!

There are other places I can go as backups, but when I want the complete bánh cuốn meal, this is the place to go. Food (5 stars) + The Đặc Biệt is still the #1 order here. It's a huge plate and you get a little bit of everything: the plain rice rolls with shrimp sprinkled on top, bánh cuốn stuffed with meat, pork roll, egg roll, and their crispy fried shrimp cake. Everything complements each other perfectly. + The rice rolls are soft and fresh, and I especially like the ones stuffed with meat. Pour their sweet and savory fish sauce all over it and add some of the red chili peppers if you want some heat. Excellent! + Their fried items are also what separates this place from some of the others. The egg roll is crispy and the fried shrimp cake actually has a nice big shrimp on there. Even the slightly steamed bean sprouts and herbs work perfectly with everything else on the plate. + This time I ordered the smaller plate with just the meat-filled bánh cuốn instead of the Đặc Biệt. It's around $15 and is actually the perfect amount for me where I'm full but not overly stuffed. However, for only a couple bucks more, I'd still recommend the Đặc Biệt. You just get so much more food! Service/Ambiance (3.5-4 stars) + Service is pretty standard for a Vietnamese restaurant. They're not constantly coming around to refill your water, but if you raise your hand or flag someone down, they'll come over and help you. Nobody is looking the other way pretending they didn't see you! + The restaurant itself is pretty small inside, but they have a much larger outdoor seating area. We came during lunch and didn't have to wait long. + I brought my dog Marley so we sat outside. It was a warm day but there was enough airflow that it was actually pretty comfortable. - One strange thing I've noticed during my last two visits: the water has a slight soapy taste. Maybe that's proof they do an excellent job washing their cups, but they could probably use an extra rinse! This time I just brought my own water. 4 years after my original 5-star review, nothing has really changed for me. I've had plenty of bánh cuốn around the Bay Area and this is still the place I compare everyone else to. The service and ambiance might only be around 3.5-4 stars, but I'm not coming here for fancy service. I'm coming for bánh cuốn, and the food is still 5 stars!

We've probably eaten here 50+ times with family and friends, and one thing I can say is that they are 100% consistent. We've never had a bad meal here. There's a great variety of Vietnamese dishes, so everyone can usually find something they like. The chả cá (fish) is one of their popular dishes and a favorite. They also have good chicken phở, broken rice, vermicelli noodles, spring rolls, roll-your-own options, and plenty of soups beyond phở. You can order individual dishes or share family-style, which makes it especially easy when coming with a group. It's very casual, family-friendly, quick, and straightforward--nothing fancy and probably not where I'd choose for a date night. But for a dependable meal with family or friends, it's a great spot. Kids like it, parents like it, and my mom likes it--which says a lot coming from an older Vietnamese person who knows her Vietnamese food! The staff is always efficient and nice, and after all these years, the food remains consistently good. The biggest downside is parking. The entire shopping center has become so busy with restaurants that finding a spot can be overwhelming, especially during peak hours. Also, keep in mind they do not take credit cards. Bring cash, or you can pay electronically through options such as Zelle/Venmo. I enjoyed the BBH, as it was pretty flavorful. However, I was disappointed when the tables did not have extra spices and sauces that I could utilize to add into my food. The Banh Xeo was pretty filling. One downside of that experience was that the nuoc mam tasted very diluted and lacking flavor. And for the Banh ram it, it was okay. I was expecting it to be crunchy, but it was more of a mochi texture than anything. It was definitely a one time experience for me. Tried this place once and I don't think I'll be back.

I got a large tonight and couldn't even finish my food. The amount of meat and noodles you get is so worth it my ladies! They order, serve, get you in and out. Packed with some hangry people. Ohhhhs well, I was hangry too.

Don't forget to bring your cash! - Food: I ordered Bun Bo Hue dac biet and Hu tieu kho. + Bun Bo hue dac biet: Honestly, the BBH broth was not flavorful like I had before. Maybe the food quality is inconsistent. Anyways, their meat was fresh and tender. + Hu tieu kho: their Hu tieu kho really surprised me. It was flavorful, both the sauce topped on noodle and the broth. Most of the toppings were fresh. Only the crispy pork fat didn't taste good and had an unpleasant smell. - I've seen a review saying that the staff was unprofessional. I can confirm that it was true. One staff was eating while working:( Overall, this local restaurant is famous for its BBH and that's what most people come here for. I hope they can maintain the quality of their food and provide better training for their staff.

I have to come back here another time! I'm told that this restaurant used to be smaller and that…read morethey've expanded. The bahn cuon here is really good -- the rice noodle is so fresh and soft and chewy. This was my favorite and the variety was so appreciated as well! It's also surprisingly filling and I would definitely get this next time I'm here. The fish sauce was also delicious as well. (this is in reference to the dish Banh Cuon Tay Ho Dac Biet) Bahn Beo were good sizes and nicely steamed. I wish there was a bit more sauce because I was running out at the end. Toppings are appropriately sized as well Personal take, I didn't really enjoy the fried pork rind topping as much and would have liked more shrimp, but once again, personal preference. I didn't quite enjoy the Hu Tieu, but my friend liked the soup! It's a little too plain for me. I do love the feeling and texture of eating thick, round rice noodles. The banh xeo that came on the side was hard to crunch through, I felt like it was probably sitting on the side for a while. Vibes were nice -- there's a call button to ask for service. Menu has a lot of items as well (e.g. pho, rice plates, etc), so there's something for everyone if you come with a big group! Our server was also really attentive and sweet -- he came by and asked if we wanted additional dishes/bowls since we were sharing food!

I promise... I'm not a hater. I'm really just telling it how it is. The quality has gone down over…read morethe years, while the prices keep going up. But I'll let y'all be the judge. Let's get into it. B1. Bánh Cuốn Tây Hô Đặc Biệt The only solid item on this combination plate was the ground pork floursheet. Soft texture, flavorful pork, and a good balance with the black fungus. The yam tempura and mung bean tempura, however, were pretty below average. No crunch, little to no flavor, and they tasted like they had been sitting out for a while. The ground shrimp floursheet was disappointing. There was barely any shrimp and mostly just flour sheet. I was sitting there wondering, "Where's the shrimp?!" The fermented pork roll was cool. It was definitely fermented because it had a strong, sour pork aftertaste. Not bad, though. T2. Cha Giờ Thịt Nướng This vermicelli bowl was not it. The pork had the classic lemongrass aftertaste, but it was very light. The texture was also dry, and the portion was pretty sad. It was essentially a salad with noodles, five pieces of pork, and 2 small egg rolls. Egg rolls were skip-worthy.. they barely had any filling. And don't even dare try their pho here either. Sources: Trust me. Yelpers, where are all the great Vietnamese restaurants at in SJ?!

It's not outstanding, but it's definitely enjoyable. Unfortunately, the service ruined the experience. As soon as I sat down, I hadn't even had a chance to look through the whole menu before the server kept touching my shoulder and repeatedly pressured me to order. I found it very rude and uncomfortable because I really don't like strangers touching me. The older lady did it to everyone in our table, and she didn't seem to realize she was making our entire group uncomfortable, and it affected our whole dining experience. So, would I come back? Absolutely not. One visit was more than enough. I'm not willing to deal with that kind of pushy service again.

The standout dish was the egg rolls. They arrived hot, golden brown, and perfectly crisp, with a satisfying crunch and a flavorful filling that made them the best part of the meal. The food, however, wasn't the reason for my rating. The restaurant's cleanliness left me concerned. I noticed cobwebs that appeared to have been hanging in place for a long time, along with dirt and grime collecting in corners throughout the dining room. Even the menus felt sticky, with a visible film of grease and small food particles still clinging to them. The faded print and worn condition made them look as though they hadn't been replaced in years. Those details created an impression of neglect that made it difficult to relax and enjoy the meal. With a thorough deep cleaning and some updated menus, this restaurant could create a much more welcoming dining experience. Until then, the cleanliness issues overshadow what was otherwise an average meal.
