We came here for dinner after a long day at Gilroy Garden. Everyone were hungry so it should be easy to please us. I ordered a #4 special for $22.00 dollars for a rice plate. Pretty pricey especially there are plenty around, so I thought maybe the portion were more or better. I was disappointed on both, the grill beef portion was like 3 slices of meat and I got more of other stuff that I could of done without. Pho was great, great tasty hot soup (no or not much MSG) with fresh cut beef. Vegetable condiments are very fresh as well. Has a variety of rice plate and very decent serving size. We tried their appetitizer the fried egg rolls. It was pricy, the egg rolls were like the size of a tiny ladies mid finger with nothing much as fillings. That was surprisingly bad and I will never order that again. The noc nam sauce was ok, and they do not give you a lot, which was unacceptable for any egg roll order. Service was so so, as most of their waiters do not speak English. If you are a non-Vietnamese speaker you are at a disadvantage when sitting and ordering food. Omg ! Can't believe how many times I've ate at this place and I've never left a review. Shame on me. Every time I'm craving a rice place this is the legit place to go to. My usual order is the bbq ribs & bbq shrimp with an egg. Let me tell: The ribs and shrimp have a nice coating and it's super tasty. I also love the pickeled veggies , lettuce and the fish sauce. * 3.5 stars, but rounded up since we had a big party and were tended to pretty quickly We took a NorCal trip and decided to swing by San Jose for a day for some food - our friends said this was one of their favorite Com Tam places, so we had to try it for ourselves. Really spacious inside with plenty of long tables for large parties like our group of 10. They have a vast menu with a bunch of varieties of Com Tam for you to choose from - I believe some of us added one or two things extra and were able to without any issues! Nem Nuong (2pc - $5.25): Definitely not the best I've had in terms of the Roll itself and the sauce. I felt like the Grilled Pork wasn't super flavorful, and the sauce was a bit too runny/bland as well. Com Tam Thit Nuong, Tau Hu Ky, Bi, Cha, Tom Nuong, Chao Tom ($17.50): My boyfriend and I were able to share this platter/special combo plate since it had a good amount of food. However, after being exposed to waaay cheaper options in Orange County, I can't say this is worth the price in comparison. My favorite part of this was definitely the BBQ Shrimp - perfectly grilled and seasoned. However, everything else left me wanting a bit more in terms of flavor and texture. Thit Nuong was dry and a bit rough to chew, and the thing I was looking forward to the most disappointed me - the Tau Hu Ky. The outside wasn't nearly as crispy as I usually like it to be, and the filling/meat didn't taste much like shrimp. Overall, it was still a good meal, but I wouldn't say it's worth the price - the regular plates are all over $10, whereas the restaurants I frequent are all below $10. Update review: 2021 I ordered DoorDash today because I wanted a rice plate and I didn't feel like driving. I ordered the beef ribs and added a substitution, and asked for extra peppers and leeks on the bottom comment area. They came through with it, and went above and beyond with a hefty portion. They even placed cardboard and tape on the coffee cup in a seperate bag to prevent spills. I don't see that often with Togo orders, so it was nice. The beef ribs was good! Nice and smoky and came straight out of the grill. The rice was perfectly made, and it lined the bottom of the Togo container and soaked in all the delicious seasoning from the ribs. I asked to substitute the cha (egg cake) with a fried egg and thought meh they won't read that, but they came through! I'm a happy camper! Prices are on par with competitors but the customer service brings this place ahead. If you don't know about this place, you need to try it. read more

Came by for lunch the other day and it was a sweltering experience. Parking was available before the lunch rush and plenty of tables were available upon arrival. Staff is quick to assist. Restaurant was comfortable upon entering, but because quite uncomfortable and extremely warm as we started eating... The rice vermicelli squares weren't super fresh...The grilled pork was tasty, although portions were quite small. Their egg roll was decent and their fried shrimp cake was also ok. The service felt like home but maybe it was because it was just our group and another family eating here. I ordered their bun thit nuong with grilled shrimp and bbq pork. Love their food presentation. I love bun thit nuong but nothing can ever beat my boyfriend's mother's bun thit nuong. This is the first time I've ever had bun thit nuong that wasn't made from her. I guess it's unfair to compare hers to this restaurant, but once you've had really good bun thit nuong it's really hard not to compare. This was my favorite spot as a kid and I'm glad it's still fantastic as I remember. They provide a generous portion size with soup on the side. I ordered the #5 beef plate special. The shrimp cake is crispy and a bit greasy but oh so delicious. The beef was tender. The shrimp on a sugarcane was also a little greasy but really good! There's a small salad with pickles carrots and radish to offset the greasy parts. This restaurant has been up for so long-- since I was a baby. This is my childhood restaurant, and they have the best com tam I've ever had. Their food is extremely good, especially the beef! I've never tasted beef like this restaurant's, and it just brings back the good memories of going here with my family every Saturday. The people there are very professional too, very mindful, very demure, very respectful. The interior reminds me of Vietnam a lot, just a bit more fancier than the restaurants in Vietnam. Their drinks are very good too, I love their avocado smoothies so much! They have a big variety of smoothes. This place just screams childhood for me, and I'd definitely recommend this place to everyone else. read more

Only 3 stars for me. I got a grilled pork with Rice plate. The pork portion was a little on the small side and there was lots of fatty pieces, but not fatty in a good way. Other people in my party seemed to like their food okay, but no one was blown away. It was nice and warm inside and there were several nice touches to the restaurant that gave it a little character. There was a lot of variety in the plate and if you love different forms of shrimp (on a skewer, shrimp balls, shrimp cake) then this is a winner. The dish was enough for me to have leftovers and eat it again for lunch the next day. I'd come again for a rice plate. They know how to make them right! The menu has a ton of other options as well. No outdoor seating, but looks like they've opened up for limited seating now as of spring 2021. read more

Such a classic and traditional restaurant to feed all your Vietnamese cravings!! Everything is absolutely delicious and tasty and feels so comforting. The portions are very decently sized and one dish can definitely feed 2 if you don't eat that much like me. The service is very quick and waiters are really nice as well. The proteins were well seasoned and plentiful, especially the pork. It was a big portion so I had enough for two meals. I didn't try the nuoc cham because I have my own that I used. My favorite part of this was how the fresh the veggies were and the care to prep them in small pieces. This way, with each bite, you could fit a little bit of each (pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, mint, etc) with the bun and protein. It's our first time at this restaurant though we've eaten at many Vietnamese restaurants. We arrived around 2pm and we were the only table ordering and it's not even a full restaurant. But it took them over 30mins to finally bring our food along with the plates for other tables that came way after we did. So doesn't make sense that it took them that long for our order but so much faster for everyone else. Honestly I am so sad at the portion size decrease 2x!!! We've been coming here for years getting take out. Post Covid they got rid of their meat only option and decreased the portion size. We started ordering extras and it was fine. Now the container is smaller even with the extra meat. Obviously the portion size became smaller once again. $5 extra beef = 5 small thin slices. I'd rather they just increase the price and kept the portion the same. $24 for broken rice order with 2 extras and still you won't get the same quantity compare to pre covid regular order w/o extras. This is an authentic Vietnamese hole in a wall place serving broken rice. The food is very tasty and portion is large. We order different types of rice plates with the combination of these: pork chop fish cake egg grilled shrimps grilled beef shrimp on sugar cane and pork skin. Service is fast. They recommended me to try the spring roll with grilled pork appetizer. It was great. I would always crave Brodard's in SoCal where the spring rolls have the crunchy spring roll wrapped inside the rice paper. When my friend took me here, I was so surprised that there was always one in San Jose! It's 2 for about $5.50. The sauce complements well with the spring rolls and the pork is super tender and flavorful. I love the crunchy spring roll piece wrapped inside because it provides the outer chewy texture of the rice paper along with the savoryness of the pork + crunchiness. The way the make their rice to the meat is spot on perfect... the neat charred to perfection, and it isnt rolled up like how the other places do it. I was pleasantly surprised by the pumpkin-like dipping sauce, and it was even warm! It tasted by a nice and warm soup. Never had anything like that before.
