This place is located in the heart of Dallas and has a great interior and exterior. The bright blue tiles are very eye-catching. It's super aesthetic and the desserts are picture perfect. The taste left more to be desired though. Out of the 4 pastries that I ordered, I really only liked the peanut butter bar. The eclairs were soft and meh 2/5. It looks great though, so if you want to eat with your eyes, go for it. The berry pillow had too strong of a berry taste which was overpowering. I got the avocado toast which was also alllright. It was too tart for my liking. The meatball plate, however, was good. My boyfriend got the chicken salad sandwich (not pictured) and he liked that a lot. A retro and modern bakery with the best potato salad I've ever eaten. A little bit of everything when it comes to breakfast and lunch casual bites, with a modern twist. I personally love a place that caters to the 'on the go' crowd by day and the 'here to stay' crowd that strolls in for a drink at night before heading back to the hotel. I think this would make a great spot to study, catch up on emails, or host an interview since it's relatively quiet and relaxed. Aside from the people sipping a latte, during the day most people take their lunch to-go and keep moving. It's a european style, so there are plenty of grab and go options as well as homemade baked goods and meats. We stopped in for a quick bite to eat since the building itsef stuck out and we were intrigued. The blue/turquoise tile extrerior lends itsef to the retro era while still fitting a southwest profile. As for parking, your best bet is to use valet at one of the nearby decks unless of course you can walk. Since the area is in the heart of downtown, corporate clientele (both local and out of town) flock here during the lunch hour, while bloggers of fashion and/or food pose in front of the 50's fecade. I recently stayed in Dallas for a few days, and I ended up coming here almost every morning to grab a delicious Mocha latte! Seriously - it was probably the best one I've ever had. This place was really busy just about every day we stopped in. I would've loved to try the food as it looked awesome, but there were never tables available. Lunch 4/5 French dip. Husband gives it a 5/5 but I give it a 4/5. The baguette reminds us of any delicious baguettes we'd get in Europe. Nothing is more inviting than a beautiful, open, well lit space. Commissary draws your eye right through the glass windows to see displays of fresh breads, cured meats, intricate pastries and more. I was delighted by a breakfast treat made of puff pastry, filled with cream cheese, meat and topped with everything bagel seasoning. It was every bit as decadent and delicious as it sounds. An everything bagel was taken to go, sliced and toasted at home and fell a little on the disappointing side of the spectrum. I had high expectations since I know that Commissary has been supplying foodstuffs for the Headington concepts for years. The biggest surprise was the reasonable prices - I was so delighted. I will, however, be back for a number of their breakfast items such as their coconut milk oatmeal or for some cured meats with wine. And who can forget their beautiful pastry case? This would've been four stars six months ago but unfortunately a couple things have changed. The hours were cut much shorter recently and it has really almost completely removed the ability to grab dinner here on a weeknight. I live downtown and by the time I get back from work and walk to commissary they're already going to be closed at 6pm. This is a shame because I'm not kidding you when I tell you they have the best pasta dish downtown: the pork rigatoni. Yes, it's better than anything at the Italian restaurants down here, including Americano. The pork is so flavorful, the seasonings give it depth, and the house made pasta is always cooked to absolute perfection. It's the best bang for your buck at Commissary. I understand not being open till 10pm but 7 seems like a reasonable compromise; even 6:30 would be helpful. Brunch items I've tried have been quite good. Porchetta egg sandwich is a great hangover breakfast, the quiches are always tasty, and I was actually pleasantly surprised by how good the breakfast sandwich with egg whites and chicken sausage was. The egg whites were fluffy, the poppyseed bun was perfectly toasted, the sausage patty was just the right thickness, and that peppery arugula bite a great balance. They have good espresso here but unfortunately they stopped making their mocha base in house. WHY? It was THE BEST. It was rich and complex with a hint of cinnamon. We would forgo coffee at brunch elsewhere and walk to Commissary after just to get that mocha. They now source their mocha base elsewhere and while I'm sure it saves them some money it's another thing that at least is putting off 2 regulars if not more. It's now nothing particularly special. They do have a good gelato selection and now that the mocha is no longer special, when I feel like "desserty coffee", their affogato with choice of gelato flavor is very good. Just not really a "to-go" item, which can be important when this place is packed. The cafe itself is clean and well designed and the natural light is nice. They typically bus tables quickly which is good considering brunch traffic. I am sure they've had to make the negative adjustments based on profit margins, but it worries me that they'll just keep shaving off till there's nothing worth it left. I hope they can find a good balance between private events and not blowing off their regular customers. It might sound silly but I will mourn the loss of that mocha for awhile haha. It was the best mocha I've ever had and it's such a shame they abandoned it. read more

This is one of those places you walk up to the counter order then sit down with a number. I ate a burger along with a drip coffee. The coffee was excellent and came with free refills as expected. The coffee had an interesting and bold flavor. Very good. The burger was awesome, but ended up being a tad too sweet for my liking probably due to the aioli. The beef patty had a rich flavor, but the American cheese held the burger back from perfection. The poppy seed bun was spot on. With no aioli and a different cheese this burger would be a total 10/10 knockout. Overall this place has a cool vibe and would be a perfect spot to read a book and sip on coffee. read more

Loving this place so far! It's a much needed addition to life downtown. Right now the only drawback is that they are only open until 7pm, but it's posted that later hours are coming soon. The menu is on the wall so very easy to pick! I had a couple doubts and the staff was very friendly and prompt to help. They recommended the Kale Ceaser with chicken and I went with it! And I am so glad I did! It was very tasty. After the salad I had their gelato. I tried a couple flavors before deciding on the pistachio. It is the best pistachio gelato I have ever had! Was able to snag a window seat on Saturday afternoon for lunch. I wish they had menus at the table because it can get really busy and crowded in the small area so you feel rushed to make a decision. I'm personally not a fan of kettle chips and that's all they offered. The sandwiches themselves were quite big and stuffed well. The chicken salad had a very light orange tint from some kind of spice. Not sure what it was but it was good. The croissant was flaky and chewy. The chicken salad was topped with tomatoes and lettuce. The turkey club had an onion jam (I believe that's what it was called) that was a bit overpowering; my fiance scraped it off the second half of his sandwich. We stayed for coffee and dessert and by this time in the day many of the desserts were either almost gone or completely gone. Decided to give the Hazelnut Petite a try which was a hazelnut mousse dipped at the bottom with a thin layer of chocolate, a glaze over the mousse and topped w/a single hazelnut. The inside had a deeper more rich mousse and there was a very thin shortbread layer at the bottom. The cappuccino was good but not the best I've ever had. I asked for it to be made sweet but it was not, but they did have sweetener options at the front of the store as well as half n' half and stirrers. We were given a number after we ordered to place on the table and then the items were brought to us. We never had to wait more than five minutes either time. One of the best Dirty Chai's I've had. Highly recommended if you like Chai lattes with a kick from some espresso. Some people enjoy latte art, but it doesn't matter to me. So sad to downgrade this previous five star review. Unfortunately, service at The Commissary has declined significantly. The best description I can provide for the negative attitude of the staff is "dismissive." Three months ago I stopped in to pick up a coffee and the barista informed me they no longer stocked half-and-half or cream. I told him that was unfortunate since I only drink coffee with half-and-half and would no longer be able to come in for their coffee. He literally caught himself mid eye roll. He offered to "go downstairs and see if they had any there." Naturally, given the time it would take for him to "see," I declined, and carried myself on over to Otto's at the Adolphus, where the service is always friendly and attentive and the half-and-half sits on the counter available to all. When I stopped back in to The Commissary last week, in my mind giving them another chance and hoping for the great service they provided when they first opened, I got an increased dose of dismissive rudeness. This time, the female staffer responded to my question as to whether they had half-and-half by giving me a look and vocal tone that said, "Are you an idiot? Of course we have half-and-half." Done. I am providing two stars: one for the quality of food, and one for presentation. The three non-existent stars are for the staff's non-existent service. read more

I thought this place would be good to try out for lunch. Even waiting in line, the pastries and meats looked good and the interior is quite nice. However once I got back to my office to eat my sandwich, the disappointment set in quickly. While the roast beef itself is fresh and nicely portioned, the bread is a basic dry wheat, it comes with minimal lettuce or tomato. The horseradish aioli is peppery, but I don't taste horseradish. The biggest crime is the "cheese." It has the same taste and plasticky consistency of a Kraft single. All they needed to make this sandwich halfway decent was a good, sharp cheddar. Add in some actual horseradish taste, and I might come back. But this awful cheese is a crime against food. read more

Comparable to other non-Starbucks coffee in places downtown. Latte is a good blend and not as milky, as say Ascension. Rotisserie chicken is perfection. Still need to explore the menu some more. I live across the street and had to endure the construction pains, but it was worth the wait. Speaking of waiting, great option for a quick lunch grab when Bread Zeppelin nearby is at its peak times, which can eat up your whole lunch break in the queue. Improvement needed in the signage/intuitiveness of the ordering area though. "Grab and go" (wine, specialty products) Order here" (breakfast, lunch/dinner menu) and the dessert gelato selections are above the meat market display out of line of sight in a third ordering area that's kinda nonsensical, unless you just wander over there after you've ordered. Needs to be rethought for the bashful customer and to avoid chaos/confusion during peak traffic. I walked past this place all the time before finally giving it a try - can't believe it too me so long because it's so good. First off, the have a variety of pastries. So far my favorites include the Malva cake and the key lime white chocolate. But you can't go wrong with any of them. Food wise I have tried a lot. I would recommend their Cobb salad, tomatoes soup, the French dip with a side of fries. Make sure to check out their specials. They are always amazing. If they have their avocado toast, I always opt for that. You can add an egg top for $2 and it's AMAZING! For coffee, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would. Not bad by any means, but a milder blend off coffee. I usually opt for just their drip coffee. I have not made it to their brunch yet, but I've only heard good things about it. My only caveat is that I think their prices are slightly higher compared to similar places in the area. But other than that, no complaints. read more
