What a wonderful experience I had at the Common Man in Claremont, NH. The atmosphere has a lovely rustic vibe to it. The staff are very friendly. Our sever was Jason, and his customer service is spot on. The menu has a variety of options to choose from. I enjoyed the appetizer I chose which was Bibb lettuce wraps with tuna, avacado, sesame seeds, Tortilla strips. The adult beverages are mixed to perfection! So if you are in the Claremont area I would recommend checking them out! They won't disappoint. read more

First off I need too say,..wow o my this place is amazing ,..I eat out at least 4-5 times a week( yes I know$$) but we don't take it with us,..I live 45 plus mins away from this location so depending on weather and traffic 2 hours+/- round trip and so worth it. I have been to hundreds of different Restaurants and this place blows all of them away from up north too Florida out too California. Also let it be known I have no inside contacts never have worked for this company,..didn't get bribed or free meal,..I was just telling my wife the owner or big wigs are usually around if u get this but ,..nope I asked for the owner and or anyone above the GM,.. My Server was Jason he was as good as it gets ,..wasn't trying to push sales made recommendations and real knowledgeable with menu and you could tell he was real experienced in the industry with watching him in his section!! I believe the Floor manager's name was Sabrina,..I know it was a female lol cuz she check on or visit 2-3 times,..offered refills for my wife and I and we still had like 1/2 cups more bread or crackers ,..you wanna talk customer service sincerity this place is insane ,...I was telling my wife now let's see if the kitchen and or bar is in the same league (customer service expectations), we got our drinks they were not cheap little pours,..nice garnish's,...food time,..I had steak tips my wife had Apple chicken,..and food is supposed to be hot when it comes to the table,..and it definitely was hot both plates ,..you could tell it wasn't sitting in the window for 5-10 mins it was amazing I couldn't find any cons nothing no joke,...I'm not sure where this review will end up but when it comes to this kind of industry the owners and big wigs of u will need to take care of these kind of employees cuz they make the business boom and keep growing and not look at them as numbers!! For starters, the restaurant was 3/4 empty and we had a 25 minute wait. We were offered crackers and cheese, but there was no cheese. The cheese appeared when we were finally seated and ironically enough, the menus REAKED of cheese... why? Our waitress (Amy) however, was awesome! She was extremely nice and provided great service. The managers were incredibly rude and noticeably mean to the servers; we were not impressed. What a wonderful, hidden gem in the middle of beautiful New Hampshire. The charming, repurposed building, right on the river offers amazing ambiance. You can feel the history in the dark hard wood and brick faces of the architecture. While waiting for your table to be prepared, do yourself a favor and have a drink at the bar. Our bartender, Karen, gave us just the right amount of attention, poured a great drink, and has one of the best local accents I've ever heard. Once seated, our server, Amita, seemed to handle our order as if she was floating effortlessly around the table. Her genuine smile and warm nature, quickly made us forget there was any kind of business transaction involved. The meal felt more like we were enjoying a private dinner party with the most gracious host. The appetizers, entree and dessert were all as delightful as the staff, and had us wishing there were more courses to be had, as much for the company as for the food. If you find yourself passing through Claremont, treat yourself to a stop at The Common Man for a truly memorable dining experience, that I promise will have you looking for reasons to pass through town again. read more

Let's face it, Claremont is a place that normally looks best in the rear view mirror. The Common Man is a breath of fresh air and is now our "go to" place when we are nearby. This was an incredibly disappointing meal. After traveling about 40 minutes from Lebanon, NH, my girlfriend and I were greeted and sat for dinner at about 6:45pm. Our waitress came by fairly quickly and, at our behest, allowed us enough time to choose drinks, followed by choosing our appetizers and entrees. Our drinks came promptly and so did our soups. I ordered the "baked onion soup" and my girlfriend got their spicy tomato basil soup. The onion soup was inedibly salty and lacked the significant amount of onion you would normally equate with onion soup. The tomato soup was lukewarm and fairly bland. The accompanying bread was meager (two slices for two people) and bland. More disappointing, however, was the arrival of our entrees only moments after our soups arrived. At this point, we had only been sitting for 15-20 minutes. The waitress kindly offered to take back the entrees to give us more time, but we declined (not a fan of heat lamps). My girlfriend ordered the crabcakes, which were large, but filled with mostly breadcrumbs and large chunks of red peppers. The "lemon basil aioli" that topped the two cakes resembled and tasted like a basic tarter sauce. This dish was, like the soup, served lukewarm. I ordered the New York Sirloin, medium rare. The steak was not cooked very well with half of the steak cooked more than medium with the other end properly done. Further, the cut of meat was not very large and contained a significant amount of gristle. I only ate about half of it. Both meals were served with a baked potato that was "loaded" with butter and bacon with accompanying sour cream. The bacon was not properly rendered and was very chewy. The potatoes were also fairly cool. The other side was, supposedly, a mashed butternut squash. The squash was absolutely awful. It was textureless, flavorless, and incredibly unpleasant. There was an oily, fatty wetness to them that was beyond unappealing. Ultimately, the meal cost nearly $70 and from beginning to end took 35 minutes. Our waitress was attentive, which was appreciated. Similarly, I appreciated offering the feedback to the manager and having him receive it with the intent of doing better the next time. However, there will not be a next time for the Common Man. While I will admit that food could be described as "common," the prices certainly are anything but. I would strongly encourage anyone who is looking for somewhere to eat in the Claremont area go to the Ramunto's next door and use the $40+ you saved to buy yourself something more fulfilling or tasty. read more

We stayed at the Common Man Inn for a week recently as we were up for my daughters' wedding. Not only did we eat at least 1 meal a day here the entire week, but we also had the rehearsal dinner (28 people) and day after brunch (18 people) here. That is a lot and you would think we would get tired of the food. We did not. The atmosphere is cozy with exposed brick walls, fireplace and board games in the waiting area. There are lovely views of the Sugar River from inside and the lovely outside patios. Yes, there are two. There is one hidden near the bar ;-). This was my own private spot a couple of nights, decompressing from 'getting ready for the wedding madness'. The staff could not have been more gracious and helpful. They bent over backwards for us during the rehearsal dinner. We opted to have the dinner in a section of the main dining room, instead of the private room upstairs, so that people could order whatever they wanted off the full menu. A grand time was had by all and service was exceptional. The bartenders even learned how to make margaritas the way my SO likes them (a recipe he learned in Santa Fe, NM). They also were kind enough to bring a continental breakfast up to my daughter's suite, day-of-wedding, so we would have something to eat and not faint before the big event. We had a streusel bread the night before that we fell in love with. Chef made it special for us to include in the continental breakfast! How amazing is that? Note: About the continental breakfast, one reviewer complained that a protein was not included. By definition, a continental breakfast does not include a protein. While I only come over once for the continental breakfast, they did have hard boiled eggs. 5 Stars for the Staff and Level of Service Now onto the food....... It is difficult to pick a favorite from their menu as everything is very, very good. I in particular fell in love the Yankee Pot Roast and Cottage Pie. Oh yeah and the Portsmouth Pie, Lobster Roll, Lobster Chowder, Rack of Lamb, just to mention a few. The only thing no one was too crazy about where their cuts of steak, but then a lot of folks were from Kansas and we were not in Kansas anymore! If you are sitting at the bar, you MUST try their homemade potato chips. They come out hot with melted blue cheese and sprinkled with bacon! They will also give you blue cheese dressing on the side. OMG, to die for! (Yeah, yeah, pun not intended.) This is a must share with at least 3 people. I highly recommend The Common Man Restaurant. I think you will enjoy yourselves. We were staying in Vermont over the holiday weekend and ended up taking the 20/30 min ride to meet family here for dinner. Everything was great! Even our server Jason! Very attentive & spot on. All the food was fresh, hot and flavorful. The inside is just beautiful, since we met for dinner we couldn't quite experience the beautiful water the building sits next too. Five stars for service. The bar-staff (big shout out to Meg!) and half off wine bottle Wednesday's = love. The fact that they are a stumble away from your hotel room is also huge (if you're staying here), and the hours are great (since Claremont seems to shut down on Sunday/Monday). On a scale from 1-10, with 1 being awful and 10 being top-notch, dinner entrees range from a 4-8 (as you can see in the other reviews). Deserts and apps are usually a solid 7-8 (campfire crackers and French onion soup - yum!) (Side note: whenever I DID receive a "4-5" meal, it was ALWAYS noted *before* I said anything, and ALWAYS taken care of. And, I'm not a complainer at all. This is part of the great service, I suppose.) I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather have awesome service, great drinks and a mediocre/"average" meal than sub-par/crap service and "real good" food. I say this because I travel for work, and I like the feel of a "home" bar, where they recognize you and treat you like family. Don't get me wrong, I DO love an excellent steak, but sometimes the atmosphere outweighs the meal. And this is one of this occasions. So, CommonMan gets my praise 'cause of their great bar service. We ate at the Common Man on a Friday night and the place was empty. We chose to eat at the bar and had to ask to check out the Bar and Grill menu. We ordered the Uncommon Bacon (pork belly) app and the burger and steak house burger for dinner. The pork belly was ok - it was a giant portion. We wouldn't order it again. The burgers were awesome and a decent price. ($7.99 and 8.99). They were cooked to perfection and the home made potato chips were great. Would absolutely go back for the burgers! read more

The food was very good. First, I love a place that gives you crackers and cheese before the meal. A special that night was sausage and kale soup. OMG! it was so very tasty and a bit tangy. I've never tasted kale soup so good. My husband always gets the lobster corn chowder and it is very thick and creamy. There was some hearty chicks of lobster in there. My entree was a turkey dinner. This is going to be brief, but I have to say I was really wowed on all fronts with the common man. We went for a later dinner with a big group. The atmosphere with the large brick walls, and wide open ceilings is quite impressive. The mac and cheese was rich, and filling, without being super greasy, or over the top. Dined on the water last night! We had the best table in the house, and our waiter "Sarah" was the best. Very attentive and gave us extra Bearnaise sauce! Three of us chose different entres, I had the roast prime rib, cut like butter, and the other guests had surf 'n turf, very good, and pot roast. What a find! We were visiting from Maryland and our last night in town we stumbled across Common Man. Just WOW! The outdoor seating was gorgeous -- hanging lights, herb garden, sitting right on the river with two small cascades. It was lovely. Our waitress was funny and the manager stopped by the table to see how we enjoyed our meal. The food and drink were incredible. The pot roast was so tender and the ginger mojito might be the best drink I've been served at a restaurant. The staff picked fresh mint from the patio garden for my drink -- how do you beat that? I have no idea when/if we'll be back in the area again, but if we are we're definitely stopping in again. read more

A great place to eat. The outside patio seating by Sugar River is lovely. The re-made brick factory building inside is airy and elegant. Fun: the cracker and dip station offered to diners as an appetizer. Highlights: delicious, sweet PEI mussels in cream. Creative, generous, and extensive fresh cocktail list: the "Dirty Mary" martini is a new favorite drink. A solid burger. The BEST: I was staying in the Inn and ate here several times. The last evening, the patio was full but the manager recognized me and led me to a secluded table in a section of the patio that was closed off behind the bar, then personally made sure I had service when the bartender got slammed. I am a huge, huge fan of the Common Man restaurants, and the Claremont location is no exception. My fiancé and I dined at this restaurant during a trip to Vermont to visit his parents. We had previously visited another location during a weekend getaway to the White Mountains, so we were stoked to discover that this one was only about 20 minutes from his parents' house. It was a nice little date night during our trip up north. The most important thing to know is that the Common Man knows how to do seafood. The salmon is stellar and the lobster corn chowder is creamy and delicious. They also have a great selection of wine, so I definitely recommend enjoying a glass or two with your meal. I appreciate that the menu includes wine suggestions next to each entree choice, to give you a leg up in knowing what might pair well with your meal. Definitely a smart marketing move to up their wine sales, I would guess. The ambiance is perfect for a date night or a group gathering, and the riverside location is just beautiful. Since we were there in the dead of winter, we didn't venture onto the patio, but it overlooks the falls and seems quite serene. Definitely a great place for an excellent meal while in the area! read more

I attended a wedding here this past weekend. There were a couple complaints. First, we had our rehearsal dinner here. The lady that was in charge was no where to be seen. We finish the rehearsal without any direction, besides from the officiant. When dinner is done, she shows up. The food, yikes. Three people ordered Mac and cheese, and they were all burned and over cooked. One sent hers back. This place is way overpriced for the quality of food that gets sent out. (I've noticed this with all common man's). The portions are also less than the be desired, which would be ok if the food was good. Now to the wedding. I would not recommend anyone get married here. The room was beautiful, no dispute there. We set up all the decorations and set the tables.... Which we were informed later when the lady in charge showed up that we didn't need to set up the silverware. The room which the bride rented adjacent to the reception was filthy. The carpet was covered in old food, and there were bugs in the corners of the room. Now, later when the bride was getting changed we locked door so no one could come in. The lady in charge unlocked the door and had a fit, because the dishes were placed in that room. Which is pretty stupid on there part because it's for the bride, she rented it! There were workers folding silverware in there as well. Why pay that money for that service? Also, the grounds where the actual wedding took place was filthy. Trash, old cups, and general trash was left from the previous wedding. Not only did we have to set up the chairs, but clean up the courtyard as well. This lady who ran this is out of her depth. She either needs more help, or just needs to not offer this type of service. She also snapped at the bride for not having the food on her place cards. It was rude and unprofessional. I was told by the groom and bride that they could never get ahold of the lady who was in charge, or she would wait days to get back. I believe it, based off of the two interactions I had with her. The bride was lucky because one of her photographers took on the role of her wedding planner. It wasn't until the bride walked out, that she wanted to be present and hold the dress. I am getting married next year, and never in my wildest dreams would I pick a common man after this. I hope no one else does either. Go find an attentive venue where the person in charge actually cares. Also, don't eat there. You will pay for something you don't like. read more

The restaurant closes at 8pm, I, by myself, was there at 7:20pm, staying at the Common Man Inn...right next door, and they turned me away- the manager said they weren't severing anymore people. Seriously, I saw a table of 8 that had not even ordered yet.......and they couldn't let one person sit at the bar, and have dinner? Really???? All i can say is very Disappointed , my wife and i went there for our 12yr anniversary thinking well it the common man it should be great. Well it was not, the food at the restaurant was cold the hot tub was cold . We wait for a hour before we seated at the restaurant for our apps. Then our main meal came out cold and the veal i oder was dry and cold. We were comp on our meals and rooms but our anniversary was ruined. i could go on about the parking issue but it would take too long. we were invited back for a free stay again but not sure if i can trust what was said to me would not go again read more

The food is pretty much the same as the other Common Man Restaurants in Concord and Nashua, NH. The food is was definitely above average. The waitress apologized for our wait and I was not sure why since they said 20 minute wait for the patio, but then I noticed that the patio had 4 empty tables they probably forgot about us. We did not wait more then 20 minutes at least I did not seem to long. The waitress was good, but her repor with customers is not good. The Common Man in Claremont is probably one of the most interesting restaurants in the state to walk into. It is located in an old riverside mill building that they lovingly restored. During the Summer months there's an opening in the floor where the river runs right beneath the restaurant I have always found the service to be tip-top. Where the restaurant seems to lack is their food prep. On a few occasions I have received cold food. Easily enough corrected in most cases, but the fact that it has happened a few times has me sometimes to return. read more

Loved staying at the Hotel- it's lovely, with big rooms also overlooking the Waterfall. The restaurant was terrific! read more

Always a solid meal with good service and varied menu. I always enjoy the free cheese and cheese spreads. We had the baked scallops and Nantucket pie. Both were delicious. The salted caramel brownie sundae was also very good. Great old mill atmosphere. Can't go wrong dining here. read more

Strike 3 for us at this place. We will not be back.....ever. Every time we have gone, the service has been extremely slow. Figured we'd give it another shot, on a slow Tuesday evening. Called to see if we needed a reservation due to Covid and the hostess said "no, we do not take reservations but could give them our name a half hour before arrival so that if a waiting list started to build we would already be on it. I gave her my name and said we would be there in 15 minutes. When we arrived she said it would be a 45 minute wait. As I looked around the restaurant there were 2 people at the bar and 3 other couple seated around the restaurant (8 people total). No good reason for a 30 second wait, much less 45 minutes. We left and will not go back.....gave 1 star for the location and atmosphere because the setting is fantastic and the refurbished mill building is beautiful. read more
