Okay, I have looked over the other reviews briefly, both positive and negative. I have to say that my experience with Compass has been quite positive. I initially came here because I lived in the same building in which this practice is housed. So convenience was a nice thing. But after getting to know Dr. Prusa (and now Dr. Hoffman), I have been very impressed. They have taken care of me with everything from routine cleaning to a couple of crowns to replace very, very old fillings that had become problems. Most recently, I emailed them on a Saturday for an appointment for a severe toothache on a tooth that they had done a crown on back in 2019. Dr. Hoffman did the x-rays and exam and even though he could not be sure with the equipment he had, made the correct diagnosis (a microfracture in the root of the tooth that needed to be extracted). He referred me to a specialist who confirmed his diagnosis after an additional CT scan. And then he helped me find an oral surgeon who could perform the extraction and begin the implant procedure. Compass has been awesome for me. And even though I now live out in River Forest, I will still be a regular patient here. They have never compromised, have always explained everything to me, and been completely professional and awesome. Nice work! read more

Brandon Prusa is the best dentist I've ever gone to. Period. I happen to also be his neighbor. When another dentist caused the same new veneer to break off 6 times back to back (no joke) I ran to Brandon in my emergency. He offered to take a look and within seconds fixed the problem using an obvious and minor solution to stop the breakage from recurring. Then I had a broken tooth on the bottom (probably also from the crappy veneer job the other dentist at a different place did) and he quickly capped that tooth but realized I also had a leaking cavity that my other dentists never found so again, great job investigating the situation. I can't recommend another dentist more highly than Brandon Prusa. Parking is easy here and the office staff is wonderful. read more

I just finished my new patient appointment at Compass Dental. I'm a senior and have a long and complicated dental history which results in me having a significant number of implants as well as my remaining natural teeth. Being a new patient, I was actually shocked that in 35 minutes I (sort of) had my teeth cleaned, had full mouth digital xrays and a dental exam. In my many years of dental visits and procedures I have never been whisked in and out so quickly. They hygienist's space had old, unrepaired equipment and trash on the floor in front of the patient's chair. There appears to be no care for esthetics or organization for this space, with walls scratched and just an overall non maintained medical space observation. For a new patient with my background, there was no probing by either the hygienist nor dentist (not Dr. Prusa). I asked about it to both and was told that is was not needed, although the hygienist stated she had probed. Believe me, I can tell you every mm of each tooth surface if I had to. I can not recommend this dentist for routine dental procedures. Perhaps they're more suited to cosmetic dentistry. read more

I just relocated to Chicago and unfortunately had an issue that required seeing a dentist despite not having established care already. The team at compass was so kind and gracious and were able to fit me in for an emergency appointment ASAP. Once there, Dr Hoffman and Erica were nothing but kind, patient, and caring. The receptionists were such a breath of fresh air. I cannot wait to continue my care here and make this the home base for my dental needs. Truly one of the best experiences I've had! read more

DON'T DO IT. I have never left a review before, but felt it was too important not to leave one at this time regarding my experience at Compass Dental with Dr. Prusa. There are plenty of other dentists out there. I urge you go to one of them. Fyi, I am not a novice dental patient. I have had a lot of work and maintenance done over the years due to an accident, requiring the replacement of my front teeth, and yet, this is the biggest financial and emotional regret of my life. I had 6 crowns completed here, as a result of the need for an implant. Dr. Prusa "sold" me into a commitment to the 6 front teeth, instead of the front 4, which I initially came in for (of course this is on me for buying into his pitch, though I wish I wasn't put in a position of having to blame myself for any part of this horrific experience). Although I was very hopeful and enthusiastic following my initial consult, over the course of the NINE months to finally complete the 6 crowns, I ended up experiencing routine feelings of dismissiveness, very unpredictable presentations of mood and demeanor, lack of care or concern and prioritization in the midst of extenuating circumstances, and ultimately, a devastating smile, as compared to the teeth 1) that I started with (!) and 2) that I repeatedly tried to request and for which I paid 12k of sickening money for. Additionally, at least two times over the 9 months of working with Dr. Prusa in 2020-2021, he traveled to Mexico on vacation and never quarantined (yes, during the height and midst of lock-down and strict quarantining regulations). I find this especially outrageous and unethical when working in a field interfacing with mandatory unmasked patients and inches away from their faces. Here is a summary of my specific experiences: 1) Dr. Prusa routinely steamrolled my attempts to describe the teeth I was looking for (which were very simply, my original teeth: similarly-sized, similarly-shaped; a totally uniform appearance). He refused to look at pictures, and simply kept assuring me how "you'll love your teeth"; "I've never had a patient who hasn't loved their teeth"; "they will look great"; "if there is any issue, we can fix/change them" - ALL lies. 2) Dr. Prusa's first cancellation on me (2 days after Christmas, where I was leaving family events early to accommodate the "big crown" appointment) was because "he didn't like the case that came in". He said they looked "like Hillary Duff's smile" - not sure if anyone is familiar, but Hillary Duff has a pretty beautiful smile, and it is consistent with exactly the above specifications I repeatedly requested be accommodated. Dr. Prusa stated he "wasn't sure what happened to have received this case looking like this". 3) Routine rescheduling and cancellations ensued from here. I was asked to come in with less than 24 hours notice more than one time. 4) I lived in outrageously horrific temps for 6 months. One set yellowed to the color of yellow curry basically overnight (just in time for holiday photos); one set I was sent out with literally had a snaggle tooth, that I returned an hour later to fix - so inappropriate to even have let me leave with a front tooth looking that way; one set had a small gap between the two front teeth, causing a lisp for me for weeks. 5) The 2nd case delivery Dr. Prusa got for my next "big crown" day, the implant crown was placed, and was literally half the length of the rest of the teeth...it remains "a mystery" to Dr. Prusa how this happened. Yet again I was told "I don't know what happened. This has never happened before." I had to have all the teeth yanked out AGAIN, more horrific temps put in, and wait another month. 6) The 3rd time I had my "big crown" day scheduled, Dr. Prusa called me the morning of the appointment to cancel because he had covid - though he did offer to "come in anyways" (?!). This was the point when I finally switched providers within the Compass dental group (to simply place the final case Dr. Prusa ordered), as I just was over it with all the escapades, lack of responsibility and unpredictability with Dr. Prusa. 7) Lastly, I did follow up with Dr. Prusa, as I never heard from him with ANY follow-up after his colleague placed my final teeth. I kindly asked if he might have considered making some sort of reparations to me considering all of the "exceptional" mishaps he told me occurred in my specific and distinctive case; and most pertinent, because I ended up with total dissatisfaction with the final teeth he ordered, after his false and repeated assurance of how incredibly satisfied I would be (or we would fix/change them). He did not respond... PS I can highly recommend working with Dr. Kyle @ Compass, if you choose to move forward working with Compass . They run their own separate operations under the same umbrella name, and I only wish I had been able to work with Dr. Kyle from the start. He is very kind, LISTENS, and seems to genuinely care about his patients. read more

Wow! It looks like I may have finally found a great dentist. I have not had the best experiences with dental visits in the past and I was starting to think that maybe I am just a terrible dental patient. Over the years, I have only had your basic dental needs... regular cleanings, braces, and a couple cavities. I was recently experiencing excruciating tooth pain after having an old cavity redone at my previous dentist. Long story short, I had to get a root canal and was unaware at the time that it would also require a crown in addition to having my filling REDONE!!! So, I paid for the same cavity filling twice and the root canal and neither the dentist or endodontist mentioned a crown until I returned to the dentist for my second scheduled filling. And the first filling was a miserable experience.... the dentist gave me THREE Novocaine shots and I STILL felt pain and discomfort throughout the entire procedure. At the time I was switching jobs which meant new insurance so I waited to get the crown and asked for recommendations from friends. Dr. Prusa was recommended to me by a friend who had to undergo a lot of dental work and she spoke so highly of him. I checked other reviews and the majority were positive so I scheduled the appointment. I am so glad I "broke up" with my dentist and went to see Dr. Prusa (haha). The entire experience was wonderful. His office staff was polite and professional and very understanding of my absentmindedness as I was a bit flustered due to coming from work, my sister coming in from out of town, and a cousin visiting from out of the country. Then when it was time for the fitting of my crown... just in time for the Royal Wedding, I must add (haha), Dr. Prusa and his team were wonderful. He asked me questions, wanted to know what concerned me most about the procedure (so he could ease my worries), answered all of my questions, explained the process, and was gentle and professional. When I tell you I didn't feel a thing, I was never uncomfortable, and the procedure was so simple, I am totally telling the truth. I was so nervous after my previous poor experiences but there was nothing to worry about because I was in great hands. I go back in 2 weeks to have the permanent crown put on and I have no reservations or concerns whatsoever! I look forward to see Dr. Prusa for my regular teeth cleanings and future dental needs, though hopefully I won't have many of those (haha). P.S. They also accept Care Credit which is great for paying for expensive dental procedures. read more

I really miss Dr Purcell. And I have to ask why Dr Purcell would allow a dentist like Dr Prussa to take over his practice??? He is nothing like Dr. Purcell at all. Dr Purcell's office was friendly nice and very kind. Dr. Prussa's office does not know the meaning of emergency at all. Dr Purcell capped a chipped tooth about 7 years ago. Part of the cap fell off. And now I have to wait 2 weeks to have this fixed? Then I called the office to find out how much and was told cannot answer this question. This would have never happened with Dr Purcell ever! He would have had me come in that Monday to have me come in to have this fixed not Dr. Prussa everything is about the $$$ not the patient. I hope Dr. Purcell or his family see this because this is a huge mistake. Now it will take me years to find another dentist that treats patients like Dr Purcell. His receptionist is a joke argues with patients about issues with their teeth and when I say ok I will find another dentist. he does not care at all he say ok find another dentist! OMG THIS IS NOT DR PURCELL'S OFFICE at all. Dr. Purcell would not allow this first of all and second his receptionist had compassion. Shame on you Dr Prussa! Dr. Purcell sent all his patients an email stating he had found a perfect replacement for his practice. LOL that is a joke. read more

Dr. Prusa at compass dental gets 5 stars from me. Dr. Fairbanks on the other hand, gets 1 star. I've been to a few dentists... those who are really good have a gentleness and finesse to them. Dr. Prusa poses several of these qualities, but Dr. Fairbanks has a lot to learn about both mechanically being more gentle and better social graces. I think we are lucky that Dr. Purcell cares enough about us that he interviewed so many dentists to find a good guy like Dr. Prusa. It would have been a nightmare to shop around for another dentist. His work is excellent. It breaks my heart to hear that Dr. Frederick Purcell passed away. He was a dear friend and such a funny guy. Giving 2 stars only because I was going to this office when Dr. Purcell was still the dentist, and the hygienists, who are still there, are great. HOWEVER, I have now been asked to reschedule my appointment TWICE, so they have now lost a patient. I don't care if other patients canceled their appointment and you don't feel like waiting for me to come in at my appointed time! My job won't allow me to come in earlier, and to call and tell me I HAVE to reschedule b/c you don't want to wait for me to come in for my appointment later is absolutely ridiculous and unprofessional! And, like I said, this was the SECOND time they've called ME to say they need me to reschedule my appointment due to their scheduling issues. I highly recommend finding a different dentist. UPDATE: The office manager did contact me directly to ask if there was anything they could do. I do appreciate that he acknowledged their mistake. However, I still don't believe the business deserves an updated star rating b/c it still happened and it never should have. Hopefully they've learned and won't treat future patients the same way. read more

I had a check-up and teeth cleaning for routine care at Compass Dental. From the beginning the woman at the front desk greeted me with a smile and welcomed me to the office. Monica did my cleaning and did an excellent job! She was very meticulous and made sure to make my smile look perfect. I saw Dr. Prusa who is SO nice and professional! (and cute!) And at the end they give you a goody bag with oral care items. I will definitely be returning to Dr. Prusa's office for all of my dental needs! read more

I have been going to Dr. Prussa since he took over the practice from Dr. Purcell. Thankfully, my visits up to now have been limited to cleanings, but I recently had an old filling that gave out and the tooth required a crown. Dr. Prussa walked through the process to put me at ease and made sure I understood everything that had to be done. I don't know if I've ever felt more comfortable during any dental procedure. The procedure was pain free and just as he described. The front office personnel has changed a bit, but everyone is still professional and polite. Heidi has been my hygienist for years. I know Dr. Purcell invested a great deal of time toward finding the right dentist to take over his practice and I am happy he chose Dr. Prussa. read more

I've had 2 other dentist in Chicago prior to meeting Compass Dental.The two before Compass tried to nickle and dime me for everything and add all sorts of procedures I didn't need. I now go to Compass Dental and couldn't be happier. They never try to push anything on me, the cleanings are quick and easy and all the staff there is super nice and down to earth. I am so glad I was referred to Compass Dental! Moving to the city and trying to find a new dentist can be a daunting task, but Dr. Prusa and his team were a breath of fresh air. They are professional, organized and most importantly kind! I just completed my treatment with Simply5 aligners and was totally impressed from start to finish. Dr. Prusa was open and honest with me about his professional opinion on the best course of action to take but never pressured me into making a decision that I wasn't comfortable with. Best dentist I've ever had!! I cracked my molar in half one night, and called the office, hoping to get the emergency number so I could get an appointment the next morning. I got the number, and I called expecting an answering service, but Dr. Prusa himself answered. He was so helpful, told me to call the office at 9:30 the next morning, and they would get me in. The office actually called me at 9:00am, and got me in at 11:30. Dr. Prusa was able to save my tooth, and he got me in and out in no time. I've been to the office in Lakeview and Roger Park, and both are very nice. The staff is great, always helpful and friendly. And doctor Prusa worked with me with the financial end since I do not have insurance. So glad I found him!!! read more

This place is amazing! I cannot speak more highly about this office, the staff and Dr. P! He is the kindest, most honest and helpful dentist I have EVER had the pleasure of seeing! His staff is amazing, friendly, helpful and thorough. I would recommend this place to anyone, and the care I have received for crowns, cleanings and fillings has been exemplary for years. I have been coming to this dental office for over a year now. It is one of the best! Dr. Purcell was excellent, he has retired and will be missed but the new dentist Dr. Prusa is excellent! He is very professional, very caring and not bad looking either :) I'm also very impressed with my dental hygienist, Monica. She is one of the best. She did some deep scaling cleaning on my teeth and she is so good at it, I felt no pain. The front office staff is always friendly and very professional. I was sent to Dr. Purcell on the recommendation of a coworker - and was NOT disappointed. His staff was very accommodating and cordial-- Front office staff is SO crucial to a patient's first impression about the care they are going to receive. Dr. Prusa, the new dentist in his office, is excellent- highly recommend following up with him if you were a patient of Dr. Purcell's- he pretty much gave me the skinny on the status of my teeth- giving me a non judging assessment of what I needed to do to prevent things from getting worse. read more

I've been largely disappointed with my experiences with Dr Prussa and Compass Dental. I had been a very happy patient of Dr. Purcell for several years, and wanted to continue going to the office after his retirement. The staff were always exceptional, and I actually always looked forward to seeing my hygienist Heidi and talking with her. Unfortunately Dr. Prussa is nothing like Dr. Purcell. While I'm happy with the work that he did, I was not happy with my experiences afterwards and how the new (new with Dr. Prussa) staff treated me. Like many people, I don't exactly have a lot of cash laying around for paying for things up front. Dr. Purcell didn't expect payment upfront, so it was not something I even considered when visiting the taken over office. Instead I found I owed several hundred dollars at the end of a visit (which is fine, it's my mouth and it's worth it), however they were less than nice about my request of a payment plan (telling me it would be a one time exception). I'm understanding though, it is a business after all, and had planned to come back. Unfortunately I felt like every return visit was met with snide remarks about me "paying at some point" (despite making biweekly payments, and paying it off earlier than agreed to). Whatever. Changing dentists seemed like a hassle. All attempts to make future appointments have failed. In December I received a postcard reminding me it was time for a cleaning. Great! I called midday on a Monday to no answer, assumed it was due to the holidays, and figured I'd try back after the New Year. I later received a text letting me know it was time to come in, and clicked the link to set up an appointment. The message told me someone would call me soon. No one ever did. In fact I've made five attempts over the last month, all on different days and times to schedule an appointment. The fact that a kept trying is a testament to how awesome the hygienist staff is. I'm honestly not sure why I kept trying, but I'm done trying. It's time to find a new dentist. read more

I started coming here last year when I was having billing issues with my previous dentist. While the office isn't fancy I appreciate the individual attention & care I get here from Dr. Prusa and the whole staff. There is full transparency with what's being done - what I need and what I don't - and you just get the sense these are good, skilled people looking out for your best interest. I've received outstanding care and advice on a few issues that went undiagnosed by my previous dentist and my teeth are now looking better than ever. read more

It is so important to have a dentist that you feel comfortable with and can trust--Dr. Prussa is just that. Wow...what an incredible practice! During a recent visit to Chicago, I had a dental emergency. Dr. Prusa and his staff accommodated my schedule and expedited the repair of a broken veneer. Dr. Prusa and Michelle are wonderful. I used to gravely fear going to the dentist but this team has been incredible. I recently had my first and hopefully only crown and was terrified. Dr. Prusa took a lot of extra time to explain every single step and we developed a system for him to keep asking if I was OK every minute or so, to which I replied with a thumbs up (or down haha). He took whatever time I needed to complete the procedure perfectly and without any concern on my part for what was coming next. I poped in to have my teeth whitened. Actually, I was referred to Dr. Prusa by another dentist. So, that speaks volumes. It took about 2 hours, 3-4 rounds under the space age "zoom" light. Out the door. The "zingers" afterward were tough to tolerate but only lasted 4 hours or so. Since Dr. told me to expect these, I wasn't too surprised. Numerous people commented that my teeth looked whiter! I can't think of a cheaper cosmetic improvement with immediate results. Nice... read more

I just recently became a patient of Dr. Prusa, and I came out of necessity, my tooth and jaw where killing me. I currently don't have dental insurance, will be getting it soon, but the issue needed attention. He was made aware of the circumstance, and was more than willing to work with me. He was very thorough, I explained where it hurt, what it felt like, he did the tooth tests, 3 x-rays, yet we couldn't find the issue, I had him stumped. After poking around on my jaw and in my mouth, he had the answer. ....I'm a grinder, stress grinder... there I said it! He gave me some options of how to remedy it, before my insurance kicks in and I have to get a sleep guard. But told me if I need anything to always call and let him know. Back to the willing to work with me - the kicker, the icing on the cake, actually don't eat that bad for your teeth - I only paid for the visit, he didn't charge me for the x-rays! read more

Where do I begin? I moved to Chicago earlier this year and was nervous about finding a new dentist in the city. I had been going to the same dentist back home in a Michigan since I was young and didn't know what to expect from someone new. Dr. Prusa and his staff made me feel right at home! His hygienist was very thorough and explained everything she was doing (something I wasn't used to). Dr. Prusa was also very informative during his exam. He told me I had a small cavity on a molar and needed a preventative filling. He was able to do it that day and WITHOUT any local anesthesia. Talk about an easy and pain free experience. I would recommend Compass Dental to any friends and family in the city. They also told me they have two other locations in the city in case I ever move from the Lakeview neighborhood! read more
