This place is very solid, actually. The roast duck, roast pork, BBQ pig, noodles, and congee dishes were excellent. Those are considered the front-part items, as you view from their main window. And yes, because we had a large group, we got to try a lot of different things. We tried the kitchen items, which are wok-cooked dishes. General tso's chicken, string beans, beef dishes, sauteed chicken, and so forth - all were very good. The heat from the wok gives it more oomph. The roasted meats we chose were white chicken, cha siu, and roast pig. The white chicken was the best out of the three, but the cha siu was very dry and underwhelming. The mapo tofu and beef with rice noodles, two very classic dishes, weren't made well at all. The restaurant does stay open later than most other Chinatown restaurants so perhaps this is why it was packed. The food didn't taste authentic and was full of tourists. One of the best Cantonese barbecue spots I've ever eaten at. Located in Chinatown this place is legit! I came here for dinner for 9 people and had the most tastiest and delicious food ever. The roasted duck was on point, and the juices on that plate can be poured over your bowl of rice. Try it out! The deep-fried fish and lobster were my type of seafood. Don't forget to get the clams with black bean sauce as well. Portion-wise I haven't seen it big like this in Los Angeles for decades. It had the flavor of a great chef working here for dinner time and overall the food is super tasty. Everyone enjoyed this place and overall we will have this as a great memory. With scores of restaurants in Chinatown, we were on a mission to try some place new. Without recommendation, we walked on Pell and Mott Streets basing our decision on two criteria: 1) a diverse menu 2) popularity; on a busy Saturday at lunchtime, are there people inside? Ming Wong fit the bill. Did we like it? Yes. Would we go out of our way to return? Probably not. (Though if we do, I'd get something grilled which I read after the fact, is their forte.) To be fair, I'm basing my assessment on only two dishes. (The menu, btw, is pretty extensive.) General's Chicken is described as having broccoli, peppers and onion in a spicy sauce. I thought it would be more vegetabl-y. Other than broccoli, there was a negligible amount of peppers and onions, plus some of the chicken was fatty. Bean curd with mixed vegetables made up for it. Prepared al dente in a lovely light sauce, it's an A-1 dish. Note that steamed rice costs extra. (I'm noticing that this seems to be the norm these days.) One of my go-to spots for a quick Chinese meal at a fair price. Decent service and exactly the kind of comfort food I crave. When I dine solo, I usually order the "three meats over rice." Yes, I'm a carnivore I went with roasted duck, roasted pork, and boiled chicken. The roasted duck and pork were solid -- flavorful, juicy, and nicely cut. The boiled chicken, however, wasn't great on its own, but the ginger-scallion sauce definitely saved it and helped balance out the less impressive cuts. Service here is actually better than many Cantonese spots I've tried in Chinatown -- efficient and straightforward. One thing to note: there's a price difference depending on how you pay. The dish is $13.50 if you pay cash, but $14.68 with a credit card (about 8.7% more). Not sure why the gap is that high, so I'd recommend paying cash if you can. I was originally going to go to my usual place for BBQ meats but the line was crazy long. And from what I remembered that place wasn't even great. So I stopped by this place which I had vague memories of it being good. Honestly, I don't know why this place doesn't have a line. I had to travel back to Queens with my roast duck and crispy roast pig. When I got home the skin of the pig was still crispy. It was definitely fatter than I would like it but still the meat was juicy, tender and flavorful. It's everything you want in a roast pig. I don't get why the average review is so low. Ming Wong and Big Wong are hands down the best roast meats in Chinatown. From what I'm gathering they're now separate restaurants, but at one point they shared owners before they went their separate ways. It shows in their roast meats. The rest of the dishes are good to excellent, but the standouts are all hanging from the chinese BBQ display. COME HERE FOR THE BBQ. Been a customer of Big Wong for over 40+ years but after eating at Ming Wong, I enjoy the atmosphere more and I love the food too. Been a loyal customer for years and they never disappoint. My regular is beef chow fun and the Singapore rice noodles. The wok hay in the beef chow fun makes it taste even better than other places. The way the curry is mixed evenly in the Singapore rice noodles is hard to find. Other places I would eat this dish, there usually a clump of uncooked curry and once biting into that, it just ruins the meal. I never had that happen at Ming Wong. I have eaten other dishes like the wonton noodle soup, bbq meats over rice, the scrambled egg with beef, beef and peas over rice and many others and I know I will enjoy my meal each time. Our family of 4 stopped by for lunch on a Sunday and found it easy to get seated right away with no wait. Based on the overall high ratings for their rotisserie menu, we were excited to put in a half order of peking duck. It was tasty and came accompanied with the usual setup of baos, hoisin sauce and scallions. The consensus for our party was that it was tasty but the portion size was by far one of the tiniest we have ever seen, especially for the $30 price tag (reference photo). While yummy, we agreed we would likely opt for the regular roast duck if we dined here again. Other dishes we tried were the Salted fish & chicken with eggplant from the Special Clay Pot section as well as Jumbo Shrimp with Walnuts. While both dishes were seasoned well, the chicken and eggplant dish didn't come with any rice, which was odd to us since in our mind, a clay pot should come with some on the bottom of the pot. We ordered a quick side of white rice to make this dish complete. The shrimp in the second dish was very fresh but the mayo wasn't mixed well so the presentation suffered a little (see pic). This is the Mecca of all chicken, duck, roast pork, fried pork over god damn rice with a side of scallion sauce! I've tried many spots in Chinatown and this is the go to place. The meats are delicious. For breakfast I go for the congee my fav, the 1000 year old egg with pork bits, my go to and extremely flavorful. Waitress and waiters are very nice, I've gone so many times they know who I am and what my typical order is. The atmosphere is old school China town restaurant, nice and cozy. I made a reservation well in advance for two full orders of Peking duck as part of a long-standing Christmas tradition with my family, and I specifically flew in for this meal. This was not a casual dinner--it was planned, confirmed, and intentional. Despite that, upon arrival we were told that our reservation had been given away, and we were forced to wait over an hour just to be seated. Even worse, once we were finally spoken to, the restaurant informed us that they would not honor our reservation for the two Peking ducks at all. No apology of substance, no accountability, and no effort to resolve the situation--just indifference. For a restaurant that claims to specialize in this dish, failing to honor a confirmed reservation for it is unacceptable and frankly embarrassing. At that point, the service had completely collapsed. Staff were dismissive, unhelpful, and clearly unconcerned that they had ruined a holiday tradition we traveled for. There was no sense of professionalism or urgency, just excuses. We ultimately left and ordered from East Season Restaurant, where the Peking duck was prepared properly, served promptly, and tasted significantly better. The difference in quality and execution was night and day and only highlighted how poorly this restaurant handled both the food and the experience. As for ambiance, any charm the space might have had was completely overshadowed by the disorganization, long wait, and frustration. Sitting around watching staff scramble while knowing your reservation was simply given away does not make for a pleasant dining environment--especially on Christmas. This was a complete disappointment from start to finish.
