We ordered takeout during the COVID restriction period. We ordered: - Chicken Vegetable Chow Mein - Chicken Fried Rice - Szechuan Ginger Beef - Spring rolls Taste was good (note that this is basic food -- not high end Chinese) and portions were generous. Four of us ate off of it, and there are still leftovers. Service was good -- a cut above. They were patient on the phone, even though we changed the order multiple times. They delivered with no extra charge (I think we were above a minimum threshold [$35]? Apparently, there is a discount if you break the threshold and pick up.). Wor wonton was well priced for the amount of wonton in it (12pc for the large). Tons of chicken, beef, fish, shrimp, broccoli, but no baby corn. Mr W says it's a decent Chinese wor wonton but if you're expecting a western style wor wonton you may be disappointed because it's very Chinese. At least it's not wonton soup topped with chow mein topping. Lady W likes the broth but not the fish Mr W likes fish but doesn't like fish in wor wonton Lady W got really full off this. Good value. Pretty bland, uninspired, inauthentic Chinese food. I was looking for a new Szechuan place to try that offered nice vegetarian options, and I stumbled across this place, so we did an online take-out order one night -- they offer 10% if you order more than $38 before tax, which is nice, and a free spring roll or hot & sour soup on orders over $30. The food was waiting when I arrived, but the woman at the front didn't acknowledge me for several minutes. -The spring roll was very thin and mostly dough, with a small amount of crunchy cabbage. This was a pretty lame, low effort spring roll. 2/5 -The kung pao vegetables was different than we expected, as it's largely a tofu dish, that comes with carrots, celery, zuchini, and cashew nuts. Mild sauce, a little sweet, not spicy at all. Tasty enough but pretty underwhelming and inauthentic. 2.5/5 -The tofu & eggplant hotpot was uninspired. It was just not very flavourful. You get big pieces of deep fried tofu and eggplant, and a mild, bland brown sauce at the bottom that isn't very inspiring. Uninteresting dish that many places do much better. 2/5 -The szechuan green beans were solid enough, but not even remotely spicy despite their menu stipulating it is. Decently cooked and flavourful, but left something to be desired. 3/5 Overall, we weren't too enthralled with the place. It's reasonably priced and offers good portions, but their dishes are fairly bland and uninteresting. I wouldn't return with so many good Chinese places in town that do vegetarian options. read more

We ordered take out. This was the worst Chinese food we ever seen. The calamari with veggies when we opened the styrofoam pack it REEKED like rotten fish smell. Omg I have. Ever smelled good this bad. We threw it away to get the smell out of our house. The schezuan beef was soggy and greasy. BBQ pork buns freezer Burnt and stale tasting - horrible. Shrimp dumplings stale hard and no shrimp flavour. We were shopping down west 4th and google searched for "Chinese food". This was a horrible mistake. Ordered delivery, said it would be 40 mins, called twice and ws told driver wa on the way, took 1 hour and 10 mins. I live 5 mins away. Sweet and sour chicken was cold, onions and green peppers were raw and the it was all batter and no chicken. Very expensive for what I got. read more

THE PEPPERY SQUID ON THE LUNCH SPECIAL IS NOT THE SAME PEPPERY SQUID ON THE REGULAR MENU just as a heads up they do not clarify it's not deep fried. Super annoying they won't take it back considering the regular menu tells you something completely different. I am a regular at this place which doesn't matter to them. Also when I tried to explain there's nothing to differentiate the two on the menu she hung up on me..... This had been our favorite Chinese food restaurant for years but the quality now is dreadful. We won't order again. We ordered 4 dishes. The house specialty, Szechwan Ginger beef, beef and broccoli, chicken chow mein and eggplant with mushrooms. They all arrived cold, greasy, soggy and bland. It was awful. I took the time and trouble to bring the uneaten food back to the restaurant the next day. They wouldn't refund my money despite seeing that the food was barely touched. They offered to give us 2 freshly cooked dishes, which I accepted just in case the original order was not typical of the current quality. Sadly, the new dishes were equally greasy, soggy and without flavor. We won't be returning. read more

One of the more pram and family friendly places to eat at. Its spacious and service is great. Only downfall is the food. Its great if you expect average tasting food you can cook yourself. Connie serves typical westernised Chinese food like sweet and sour pork etc. I had asked if they served more authentic pork like peking ribs or soft tofu in claypot which to my dismay, the waitress said no. We ended up having dumplings, eggplant with shredded pork and chicken salted fish fried rice. Pretty bland but I guess its my fault for having expectations that this place was decent after reading a few reviews. The eggplant was very oily and the saltfish chicken fried rice had only a few pieces of chicken in it. Dumplings (siew loong bao) were quickly eaten and forgotten. We've all heard that good things come to those who wait. But if you order from Connie's, you'll discover that mediocre things come to those who wait even longer. Imagine, for a hypothetical moment, that it is Christmas Eve, and you have decided to get a jump on the Jewish tradition of Xmas Day Chinese food by ordering Chinese food for dinner. You know you've got limited options, because it *is* December 24th and lots of places are closed. And it's been just long enough since your last Connie's order that you can't quite remember why you haven't ordered from them in ages. You pick up the phone at 5:15, knowing it'll probably take longer than usual to get your order. And you're glad you did, because Connie's tells you it will take an hour to get your food. Sounds about right for Christmas Eve. You use your hour to get out plates and utensils, buy (and download) a movie, and figure out what to feed the kid who refuses to eat Chinese food. 6:15 comes and goes. You are chill, because you have also been using your hour to drink. By 6:45 you are not so chill, so you call for an update. "We are busy," Connie's says. "It'll be there soon." At the two hour mark, things are getting ugly. You are getting hangry and eating random carbs off the kitchen counter. Your younger child now seems like a GENIUS for refusing to eat Chinese food, and now that he has been fattened up with a bowl of buttered noodles, your older child is eyeing him and thinking about whether she could eat *him* for dinner instead. Your dinner guest is getting steadily inebriated because no food has arrived to absorb the drinks you've been steadily handing him while he waits. And your husband has changed into Star Trek pajamas because -- well, no real explanation for that one. You call in desperation, and Connie's assures you that if has been two hours, your food MUST be on its way. You are delirious with hunger that you fail to ask whether they could actually check on your specific order. You begin to rummage through the freezer for a Plan B. Does leftover frozen chicken go well with leftover frozen pizza? After assembling the ingredients of your backup dinner you call Connie's to cancel. This time, they actually look up your address. The delivery guy is on his way, honest! You are about a 6 minute drive from Connie's so you decide to wait ten more minutes before defrosting your sad little backup meal. With your hunger-sharpened senses, you finally detect what sounds like it might be footsteps on your stairs....or is that just the sound of your heart beating your empty, empty stomach like a drum? It's the food! The delivery man forgets to look at the bill before handing you your food, so he ends up walking into (and through) your house uninvited to check how much you owe him. That's not weird AT ALL. Despite having enough authority to enter customers' homes, he does not have the authority to in any way reduce the bill despite taking well over two hours to bring our meal. But that's okay, because they threw in TWO FREE EGG ROLLS. Wow. On the up side, remember that other hackneyed expression -- "hunger is the best sauce". Well it turns out that hunger is much less useful than sriracha when it comes to adding some flavor to Connie's food. Nothing was terrible...General Tso's chicken, ginger beef, kung-pao prawns, house vegetables and fried rice. But it was all flavorless. The best thing I can say for it is that the kung-pao prawns did come with an impressive quantity of (still bland) vegetables. And actually, the fried rice WAS terrible. Everything else was fine -- if drenched with enough sriracha. But there's good news. We may have messed up Christmas Eve -- aka the first night of Hannukah, this year! -- but we are *way* ahead of the game on New Year's. Pretty consistent good food over the years. Service is good. We usually take out or delivery but we have eaten in the restaurant and it's comfortable and clean. Our faves are beef chow fun, chicken and veg chow mien, honey garlic boneless chicken, wonton soup. Orders over $30 get free spring rolls, and take out is 10% off. read more

When it comes to what I call "white" Chinese food, I have the following criteria that must be met. a) Does the restaurant deliver ? b) Is there a whackload of food? c) How much msg are we talking? d) Spring rolls? Connies satisfies all of these. They deliver in the said time, theres oodles and oodles of food and their food doesn't have me running to the closest store of a can of Coke (if you have msg dry mouth, grab the original can of Coke, no subs, must be in red can and be Coca Cola, try it!). AND if you order as much as I typically do, anything over $30 bucks gets you extra spring rolls, tasty tasty spring rolls. So a quickie on our meals, we typically order combo E which includes spring rolls, rice, Beef & black bean, sweet & sour pork, chicken vegetables and house special chow mein. Everything was hot upon arrival, reasonably priced ($62 with tip) and lasts us at least 2-3 days for two people. The food has a good ratio of meat vs vegetables (lots of zucchini, onions, broccoli etc) and the meat is cooked just right, never on the dry side. They also tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to saltiness. Which is great because I've never had to wash it down to reduce the sodium, nor have I had to run to my salt shaker. I mean this ain't a place with a 5 diamond gourmet chef extraordinaire. I don't understand all these "expectations" people throw around. This is good old fashioned "Chinese" food served in aluminum containers. What do you guys want? This small town girl is more than satisfied. read more

I get a wee bit misty eyed when i talk about how much i love Connies. Amazing Chinese Szechwan food. i literally ate here two or three times a week for almost a year when i worked along this street. Lunch special is perfect. it is so zen, i would be so relaxed after having lunch there, there is always nice mellow music playing and they had this small little water device that sounded nice. Super friendly wait staff, and the food would come out so fast i barely had time to sip the tea they always give you. At the end of the day, the Szechwan Ginger beef and the Szechwan chicken and green been are some of the best things i've ever tasted. that's how much i love Connies read more

In recent years I have developed a sensitivity to MSG and have not been able to enjoy Chinese food as a result. To my surprise I came across Connie's who uses no MSG in her cooking. So I hear that David Suzuki lives nearby and comes here a lot.. too bad I didn't see him... when when i walked in with my friend, i was surprised to see that we were the only asian patrons. Thinking to myself, I'm guessing that everyone would venture off to places such as Congee Noodle house or a HK diner to get the food we were going to get here. We ordered veggies with 3 type mushrooms, meat, seafood and tofu hot pot, and chili wontons. The chili wontons came in a bowl filled with peanut sauce, not what I had expected, and definitely was not spicy.... maybe a pinch but that could have been my imagination. The wontons were very large, I can only wish that they made it themselves, but I highly doubt it. The veggies were fresh and I love mushrooms to to have 3 different types - including the good traditional large ones is a great treat. The hot pot was meaty with bbq pork, squif, scallop, shrimp and deep fried tofu. All the food was very comforting and reminded me of something mom would make. Nothing tasted overly greasy and the sauce was simple yet tasty. I think that this is one of those places where you would want to go to if you just didn't want to cook, but wanted to eat the same type of food you would get at home.... sometimes it's more satisfying having someone else make it for you. read more

I always go for the General Tso's chicken, Cod Filet with Black Bean sauce, Spicy Wontons, and Spring Rolls. All delicious and spicy, this Chinese food won't leave you feeling lightheaded afterwards, nor give you the hangover a few hours later, like most other Chinese food does. Why is it so difficult to find AUTHENTIC service with great Chinese food?? Golden Harvest on Main/33rd is the best I have experienced so far. Anyway, back to Connie's. They charged me extra for adding something to a dish and I overheard her in Cantonese (which I'm fully fluent in) yell to the chef- add some more but don't pick the big ones; just put 4 small pieces in.... I'm not a big fan of Chinese food but Connie's is sweet. We arrived for a late dinner but the place was quite full. You know it's got to be good with so many choices around these parts. The decor is nice too. Our server was so helpful. There were no language barriers for one, so that was good. For my part trying to explain my diet limitations can be very difficult. I was assured there is no wheat in the House Special Curry Chicken. (I didn't ask about Gluten, because that would require scanning labels and I didn't want to go there.) But right on the menu and the front window is a "NO MSG" sign. I would recommend asking for less sauce. I did so, and still found it to be heavily laden. Be warned these are large plates. SHARE DISHES or carry it out. I peeked into the kitchen and saw all the fresh ingredients all lined up and prepped. I was impressed. It's two hours later and I am not "hungry again" contrary to common beliefs and I also did not get indigestion. So yay for Connie's. read more

I was a little worried that my food wouldn't get to me- I had already paid with my credit card, so I called back three times. I didn't have a cell phone that I could use, so I was worried that they wouldn't be able to contact me. The lady answering the phone wasn't annoyed by me. I thought I'd have to go downstairs to the front desk to get my food, but the guy actually came to my door. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food considering the average rating is a 3. I thought everything was pretty tasty. I ordered the Blackbean eggplant, steamed dumplings and sesame wings. Echoing what everyone else before me has said, expect to get large portions. The food even tasted good as leftovers, which is hit or miss when it comes to chinese take-out, another plus. read more

Connie's is the place to go when you want bang for your buck. Lunch specials are all around $7 and include soup and rice. You're definitely full afterwards. Dinner is also well-priced but doesn't include soup or rice. I've never had to wait for a table and business is pretty steady but the service is limited. There is usually only one or two waitresses on shift so you may have to flag one down for service but they are very nice. The food is great for what you're paying. This place definitely takes over the Great Wok experience (which, unfortunately, closed last year) if you ever went. The one thing that is not so great is that the restaurant changed its Sunday hours from an 11:30am opening to a 4:00pm opening so no more lunch on Sunday. read more

Slap me baby - it can't be real?! An affordable and untprentious food joint on uber trendy and increasingly corporate W. 4th Ave? Slap me again! Didn't feel like forking over wads of $$$ for yuppy lunch kibble. So I decided on Connie's for lunch. Ordered the Fish with Black Bean sauce for $7.95 and the pieces of fried cod were tasty and came with a HEAP O veggies: zucchini, onions, and peppers. It was so fresh and yummy and not swimming in a sea of grease. Bonus, it came with an appie soup too. Service was friendly and attentive. My friend and I loved our lunches. Her's was the Chicken with Cashew Stir Fry for $7.25, also good. Definitley need more of these indy restaurants amongst the ubiquity of corporate retail outifts. Amen. read more

I had been to this place three or four times and while the food is nothing special it is reasonably good north American Chinese. But the nasty person that runs the front is a real pain to deal with. So much so that I will never return. She literally and very loudly demanded a tip while I was dragging it out of my pocket. I always tip in cash so that the server will surely get it. I paid for the meals on debit and was putting a twenty percent tip on the table when the owner/server came at me with both hands out, loudly demanding I tip her. That has never happened to me before. I could hardly believe it. Of course, the tip went back into my wallet. I find such behaviour intolerable and Connie, the person I had to deal with, does not seem to like the people who support her unfortunate business. Never again. read more
