I fell for the marketing gimmick of "black matcha". It's just ground black tea. The black matcha espannier tasted like the cousin of Hong Kong style black milk tea (like you'd get at Asha) at first, but by the end of the drink it was clear it was the inferior cousin. Idk if I should have mixed the drink (but I feel like you don't traditionally work espannier?) but the ratio of tannins in the tea to milk was unbalanced. I was super excited to try Constance for their freshly milled matcha and it lived up to the hype! I got the signature matcha latte and it was basically everything I want my matcha to be. It was nice and creamy from the milk but the matcha flavor still shown through. My biggest pet peeve is when a matcha latte just tastes like milk or when the drink is grainy and thankfully Constance delivered. There's a ton of new matcha spots popping up and I have to Constance is one of the ones that actually serve a solid matcha that isn't simply dessert. Definitely come try the matcha! There are a few benches with small tables and bar seating by the window. Staff is friendly and does try to have conversations with customers when it's not too busy. I was hoping for a smooth matcha sip, but it was very gritty and the Einspanner tasted more like a salted cream cheese top. The matcha was bitter and drying. Now although, the worker did give a disclaimer that some of their matcha profiles do contain this, it still wasn't the quality I was expecting. SERVICE: 9/10 Staff are very kind, friendly, and informative. I appreciate how the worker gave a disclaimer as to what their different matcha profiles are. I came to Constance a few weeks ago and had a great experience! I dropped in on a Monday morning, half an hour after opening. To my surprise, there was no line and plenty of street parking which is unheard of in SF! This matcha shop is super cute, small, clean, bright, and has the sweetest workers that are dedicated to their craft. My bestie and I were a little confused on how to order but the workers broke down the menu and explained the different varieties of teas they offer. They have an extensive menu of freshly ground teas and offer a variety of stone ground tea drinks such as matcha, hojicha, and even black matcha. However, the star of the show was their freshly milled matcha, which is pretty unique in the bay area :) The freshly milled matcha is ground, in-house, using a traditional Japanese granite stone mill or ishi-usu. At the back of the shop they have three mills on display, which was pretty cool! I ordered the freshly milled matcha latte w/ oat milk substitute and cream top. Fyi, each drink has a fixed sweetness level and you aren't able to add a cream top to any of their freshly milled reserve drinks. This ensures that you can taste the notes of the matcha and appreciate the true flavors. My drink was delicious-- smooth, creamy, lightly sweetened, slightly earthy, and deep green! Constance stands out by being the only matcha shop in SF to offer freshly milled matcha. The question on the top of my mind - can you tell? And even more puzzling - does it taste better? I ordered the highest grade of the fresh milled series (11.95$ ouch!) while a friend ordered their classic matcha latte at half the cost, to put this to rest. I can say for certain: yes you can tell the difference, though debatable if it's worth the cost. Both were grassy matchas but the 11.95$ one had a rounder flavor which did not have the bitter aftertaste the classic matcha latte did. Unfortunately, I did not like either drinks very much.... I came here right after my half marathon because I was absolutely excited to try the first matcha mill in San Francisco! It's a cozy spot in the sunset district and the tables and booth are set up along the wall so you can talk to your neighbor. I ordered the matcha latte with light ice. The cashier let me know that ordering light ice doesn't change the amount of liquid in the drink and I was okay with that. I typically prefer less ice in my matcha drinks so I can taste the matcha better. You can adjust your sweetness and milk of choice as well. You can watch your drink being made since it's a glass between the baristas and the crowd. When I finally took a sip, I was sad it didn't have the matcha punch to it. It was pretty much milk I was drinking. I was looking for the matcha and could barely taste it. I even mixed it and still same result. Came here on a Sunday morning and there was a short line. My sister and I ordered the Matcha Einspanner, but the cashier accidentally rang one of our drinks up as the Black Matcha Einspanner and we didn't realize until the drinks came out, so we ended up trying both. I was excited to try it and the color looked good but I felt like the matcha itself lacked the typical tasting notes of nuttiness, umami, or sweetness that I look for. It was moreso grassy and bland so not my preference. The black matcha looked like a hojicha and didn't taste like matcha but my sister said the drink was ok. Instead of grounded green tea leaves, they ground black tea leaves. The taste reminded me of black milk tea, only a lot grainier. I definitely think it's an acquired taste, probably like matcha is. Ishi-usu, which is stonemill in Japanese, is one thing I'll try to remember. This old contraption is good for grinding tencha tea leaves, maybe other loose leaves. Suppose we put in butterfly pea flower petals towards the center; eventually grinding them into a bluish powder form. Fun, right? All it takes is to turn the handle right; slow in the first few seconds until you move a little quicker, but at a steady pace. Such a bright airy space after coming all this way to Outer Richmond! A perfect place to lay back and enjoy tea lattes and premium Taiwanese handcrafted oolong tea leaves. The latest pick-me-up wasn't Uji Matcha nor hojicha, which Constance Tea & Matcha currently have. It's black matcha, milled from black tea leaves! If Korean matcha from the Jeju Islands wasn't the best taste of the season, how about Korean black matcha? Its flavor profile in a latte form was toastier than hojicha. THIS black tea powder form will now be so much better than the old school regular milk tea made from loose leaf black tea. Grateful to have finally gotten to visit Constance Tea & Matcha during their soft opening. I visited on a holiday weekend, and so there was understandably a bit of a line. They appear to be in the process of building a parklet for outdoor seating. Make sure to wear layers if you have to wait outside, as the neighborhood can be quite windy and chilly year-round. The worker at the register was very friendly and relatively knowledgeable in answering my question regarding the difference between their Freshly Milled Matcha Latte and Stone Ground Matcha Latte--the freshly milled is milled in-house using tencha leaves from Uji (although it is unclear what cultivars), while the stone ground is powder milled previously using tencha leaves from Shizuoka. The employee mentioned that the matcha used in the Stone Ground Matcha Latte has a more astringent flavor that cuts through the fattiness of the milk well. My husband and I got both to try, and I definitely agree with the employee! I really enjoyed the flavors of the Stone Ground Matcha Latte, although both were very good beverages. I love that their default sugar setting is "less sweet". My only critiques would be: 1) to have ceramic mugs/glassware for patrons who wish to enjoy their drinks "for here"; 2) sell their freshly milled matcha in tins--I would definitely buy them and would love to have a local vendor; and 3) open earlier than 10AM so that this healthcare worker can grab a matcha before work. We've been coming to Constance at least twice a week since they opened, and every visit has been consistently excellent. Ryan and Scott are always welcoming and take the time to explain the teas and how each drink is made. Constance is the first café in the SF Bay Area to freshly grind tencha leaves into matcha in-house using commercial-grade Japanese stone mills, and you can truly taste the difference. So far I've tried the Hojicha, Cassia Black Tea Latte, and Matcha Latte. Wow.. they stone grind the matcha from the tencha leaves right here onsite daily! Friendly courteous counter staff. It reminds me a little of Philz coffee where they have baristas that prepare your order. The owner is here to explain the entire process. It's fascinating to see. I loved my freshly milled iced matcha latte. Just smooth, and that's just from their standard grade. They have a fancier "Reserve" grade matcha available too. The aroma from the stone mill when they were reloading it was amazing. Stone milling just one batch of tencha takes several hours! We lucked out on a slow moment with no lines! Constance Matcha provides quality service, Japandi aesthetics, and delicious, smooth matcha drinks! I came here on a Friday morning around 10:30 AM (30 minutes after opening), and it was slightly busy. There wasn't a line, but there were a lot of folks waiting for their drinks. It's a bit of a compact space with some tables for waiting, but I wouldn't say this is the spot to socialize. In the back, they have their matcha milling machines that you can look at, but it's a bit tight with so many folks trying to take a glance. Between the two of us girlies, we got four drinks. I particularly got the Black Matcha Einspänner and the Usucha Matcha (which only comes hot in a 2 oz serving) to try out. The usucha matcha was nice, strong, and earthy. It cost $9, and if you're an avid matcha enjoyer who appreciates the taste, you'll enjoy its flavor profile. The Black Matcha Einspänner stood out the most to me. I regret not asking what makes it black, but what I really liked was how nutty it was, along with its creaminess and mellowness. I think it was the perfect amount of sweetness for me as well (the default is less sweet). Overall, if you are in the area, check this spot out! More of a grab your drink and go type of place. Teas and houseware are available for purchase next to the register. Staff provided recommendations for first time customers. Aesthetically pleasing environment. Order: Freshly milled matcha latte, organic whole milk on the bottom and fresh matcha on top. Oat milk is an extra $0.40. Default sweetness is 20%. Matcha had a grainy type texture to it, Grainy type texture to the drink either from matcha or the milk that was not desirable. Worth a try if you're in the area. It is a hot, new place. read more

Been monitoring the construction of this space for well over a year, and it's so cool to see it finally open! Line was down the block and it took us about 30min to get the ordering kiosk. The folks running Constance are so nice and eager to share their passion about matcha with you -- they took the time to go over the menu, the different types of matcha served, and the selection process. The menu does include other types of tea and tea drinks besides the matcha-based ones. Pricing is on the higher side, but seeing as how they freshly mill the matcha in-house, I think it's worth the little splurge every once in a while. We ordered the freshly milled Usucha ($5.95), which is a shot of matcha. The matcha was a lovely, bright green like tender shoots in spring, and the profile had this wonderful and refreshing earthiness that reminded me of chewing on pine needles. Did not have any of the bitterness that lower-quality matcha has -- I also suspect it's because they brewed it at a much lower temperature so it didn't burn or over-extract. Forgot to ask, but I'd guess the brewing temp was somewhere 70-75C. There's a long bench with small tables inside that seat about 10 people in total. If you walk all the way to end of the shop, you can watch the stone mills grinding the fresh matcha. Fascinating and cool to experience what's essentially a farm-to-table match experience. read more

New cafe that mills their own matcha onsite! I got the freshly milled matcha latte with oat milk and it was solid. Good matcha flavor! I like that all their drinks are lightly sweetened but they have a bottle of simple syrup so you can add more if it's not enough. The cafe inside is cute. Lots of light and there's some seating too. I would come back to try some of their other lattes like the black matcha latte or the hojicha latte. read more

It's really cool that Constance freshly grinds the matcha, but I'm honestly not sure if it makes a difference in the taste. While the matcha latte is good, for the very high price of almost $12, it's unfortunately not a place I'd be a regular at. Fun to try once and see the matcha being made! read more

Checked out the newly opened fresh milled matcha spot in Outer Richmond. Glad I did it. A wonderful cozy spot. Bench seating along the wall and a small counter. Many matcha options including fresh milled matcha, stone ground teas, freshly ground teas pulled to order, brewed teas. Friendly and efficient service. I chose the classic fresh milled matcha latte and it was perfect. No added sugar to allow me to enjoy the matcha. Wonderfully made and worth a future visit. Check this place out. read more
