Freshly milled reserve matcha latte $12, black matcha einspänner $8
    Veronica T.

Love authentic matcha? Then this place is for you. Authentic meaning in its pure, unsweetened form. They do supply syrup on the counter though if you want to sweeten it up. Win. Taking more than 2 years to open, Constance has one very important distinction that automatically sets itself apart from every other matcha establishment in town. They've imported mills from Japan, so they are the first in SF to mill their matcha in house. Win. Black matcha?! What the wha...? Apparently, the definition of "matcha" is "tea leaves that have been finely ground," so enter black matcha & red matcha, made by the same process as traditional, authentic green matcha. I was uber intrigued, I'd never had black matcha before. Win. We came on a Sunday, in the last hour of service, & sure enough there was a line. But, we only waited about 20 minutes. Hardly a deal breaker, especially given the introduction to a whole new experience. Win. No doubt they had a line all day. But the cashier was still friendly & helpful. Win. We ordered one of each (green & black) with oat milk (oat milk is the only dairy alternative). Even though I didn't add syrup, this green matcha had virtually zero bitterness. Clean, yes. Bitter, no. Not sure if it's because this matcha latte is 12 bucks a pop, but it was outstanding & I was happy, so worth it. Win. Black matcha (served iced). I love black tea with milk, so I knew this wouldn't disappoint. It's not necessarily strong so much as you can actually taste the black tea notes despite the oat milk addition. Malty. Roasted. It was interesting & comforting. Win. A destination spot thanks to all the buzz they've been getting, it was totally worth the drive across town. Super techy in the back; there's live feed of the milling on a giant screen. If I lived in the area I would be coming here on the regular. The finest matcha in SF. 5 stars

Been monitoring the construction of this space for well over a year, and it's so cool to see it finally open! Line was down the block and it took us about 30min to get the ordering kiosk. The folks running Constance are so nice and eager to share their passion about matcha with you -- they took the time to go over the menu, the different types of matcha served, and the selection process. The menu does include other types of tea and tea drinks besides the matcha-based ones. Pricing is on the higher side, but seeing as how they freshly mill the matcha in-house, I think it's worth the little splurge every once in a while. We ordered the freshly milled Usucha ($5.95), which is a shot of matcha. The matcha was a lovely, bright green like tender shoots in spring, and the profile had this wonderful and refreshing earthiness that reminded me of chewing on pine needles. Did not have any of the bitterness that lower-quality matcha has -- I also suspect it's because they brewed it at a much lower temperature so it didn't burn or over-extract. Forgot to ask, but I'd guess the brewing temp was somewhere 70-75C. There's a long bench with small tables inside that seat about 10 people in total. If you walk all the way to end of the shop, you can watch the stone mills grinding the fresh matcha. Fascinating and cool to experience what's essentially a farm-to-table match experience.

Ahh! My iced black matcha latte with oat milk!

Ishi-usu, which is stonemill in Japanese, is one thing I'll try to remember. This old contraption is good for grinding tencha tea leaves, maybe other loose leaves. Suppose we put in butterfly pea flower petals towards the center; eventually grinding them into a bluish powder form. Fun, right? All it takes is to turn the handle right; slow in the first few seconds until you move a little quicker, but at a steady pace. Such a bright airy space after coming all this way to Outer Richmond! A perfect place to lay back and enjoy tea lattes and premium Taiwanese handcrafted oolong tea leaves. The latest pick-me-up wasn't Uji Matcha nor hojicha, which Constance Tea & Matcha currently have. It's black matcha, milled from black tea leaves! If Korean matcha from the Jeju Islands wasn't the best taste of the season, how about Korean black matcha? Its flavor profile in a latte form was toastier than hojicha. THIS black tea powder form will now be so much better than the old school regular milk tea made from loose leaf black tea. I'll be waiting to find out if the baristas extend hours of business pass the evening. Till then, Constance Tea & Matcha is one of my favorite places to have solid tea drinks!

New cafe that mills their own matcha onsite! I got the freshly milled matcha latte with oat milk and it was solid. Good matcha flavor! I like that all their drinks are lightly sweetened but they have a bottle of simple syrup so you can add more if it's not enough. The cafe inside is cute. Lots of light and there's some seating too. I would come back to try some of their other lattes like the black matcha latte or the hojicha latte.

sf's first and only matcha store that mills its matcha fresh! I love the variety you can choose from, and the mills they display alongside the different teas you can learn about. I waited about 20mins for my drink on a Saturday morning. the matcha itself is high quality, has an umami/vegetal flavor and is full bodied. a 12oz cup is $7.75 but worth the quality!

Tried Constance during a weekday, which very minimal line and staff was helpful giving recommendations and also explaining their milling process. Tried the Black and regular Matcha Einspanner, which were both tasty! The Black Matcha just tastes like black tea. Their drinks start as less sweet that I found myself adding a bit more simple syrup to it to make it more sweet. They did come out to about $8.5/cup and I felt that the size to cost ratio was a bit steep, that I finished my drink fairly quick.

Checked out the newly opened fresh milled matcha spot in Outer Richmond. Glad I did it. A wonderful cozy spot. Bench seating along the wall and a small counter. Many matcha options including fresh milled matcha, stone ground teas, freshly ground teas pulled to order, brewed teas. Friendly and efficient service. I chose the classic fresh milled matcha latte and it was perfect. No added sugar to allow me to enjoy the matcha. Wonderfully made and worth a future visit. Check this place out.

Wow.. they stone grind the matcha from the tencha leaves right here onsite daily! Friendly courteous counter staff. It reminds me a little of Philz coffee where they have baristas that prepare your order. The owner is here to explain the entire process. It's fascinating to see. I loved my freshly milled iced matcha latte. Just smooth, and that's just from their standard grade. They have a fancier "Reserve" grade matcha available too. The aroma from the stone mill when they were reloading it was amazing. Stone milling just one batch of tencha takes several hours! We lucked out on a slow moment with no lines! Clean austere modern vibe with the expected white interior with wood accents. Yep.. definitely worth checking out!

Came here on a Friday afternoon and there was a decent line. I enjoyed the clean minimalist aesthetic and loved seeing how the matcha was milled in house. Freshly Milled Reserve Usucha $9.95 (2/5) The matcha is indeed smooth and earthy but for the price I was disappointed. I ordered it to go but when they called my name, I received it in a glass which the cashier realized when I looked confused and told the person making the drinks that it was to go. The guy just dumped it in the cup and just it on the table but I saw that there was still a bit of matha in the glass cup. For a 2 oz pour, the matcha was definitely light where I prefer a deeper earthiness. If you are into lighter taste profiles then this may be for you. Black matcha latte $7.25 (2/5) wished the matcha flavor was more prominent but it was lost in the black tea flavor. I do appreciate the sweetness being 20% standard but could possibly use less milk. Hojicha einspanner $7.25 (4/5) The drink was not gritty at all and I enjoyed the saltiness and of the cream which was delicate and really made the drink shine. If the hojicha flavor was a smidge deeper, this would definitely be a 5/5 for me. Quality is there but just doesn't fit my personal palate.

The Best Matcha in The Bay.... IMHO and for my personal taste preference. My qualifications? A nobody that wastes money on swamp water, green milk, and/or mud milk. Soft opening today, Constance is the newest matcha shop to open in the city. In the saturated matcha market, Constance is a unicorn serving high-quality matcha that not only looks the part but tastes great. And, they take it a step further by being the first matcha shop in NorCal to mill their own matcha! There's only one cashier so it may take awhile to order if there's a line and customer(s) have a lot of questions. M E N U Drink Series: - Freshly Milled Matcha ($5.95-$11.95) - Stoneground Teas ($5.75-$7.95) - Freshly Ground Teas, pulled to order ($5.50-$7) One size drinks, unless otherwise noted on the menu. Matcha/Hōjicha are whisked to order. Default: All lattes and einspänner are lightly sweetened with organic cane sugar, served with organic milk. Oat milk +50 cents. No coffee or toppings (i.e. boba). D R I N K S * Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Latte ($11.95) - Sub oat milk +50 cents The best matcha latte I've had to date, Constance uses single origin Okumidori matcha - a beautiful vibrant green color, it's smooth and creamy with a savory, rich umami and gentle natural sweetness. No clumps, bitterness, or astringency. Rocket fuel without the panic attacks. Top-tier. Matcha prices are getting wild but I rather pay $12 for a great matcha latte as a weekend treat than wasting $7-$10 for one that I toss in the trash. * Hōjicha Einspänner ($7.25) The roasted green tea was perfectly malty with chocolate notes. The whipped topping is more like cold foam, light and airy. * Black Matcha Latte Einspänner ($7.95) My first time trying black matcha, it's finely stone-ground roasted black tea. Glad I tried it once but I'm sticking with their matcha or hōjicha. S E R V I C E Friendly and helpful. There's four tea baristas. Since everything is made to order, expect a bit of a wait for your drinks. A M B I A N C E Minimalist with one long bench and a handful of wooden cafe tables. Not a place to linger or laptop camp. No restroom. Overall, Constance is a the IT girl in the bay...a matcha shop actually worth trekking across the city for and spending your hard earned money!

Another great matcha to add on your list! We got the stone ground matcha and fresh milled matcha. Both were strong tasting, not too sweet lattes (simple syrup is available at the counter) Service was great. Long line during the weekend, so come on a weekday Ambiance: small space with several seats

Bold tea flavors from Kyoto and Taiwan which smell amazing and tastes even better. I really enjoyed the iced black matcha and iced hojicha both with oat milk, sweetened with cane sugar. I also tried their freshly milled reserve matcha from Uji and it was incredibly smooth! The staff were friendly and my drinks came out quickly. I even got a tour of the place and was able to see their mill machines live in action. The ambiance was nice well lit with portraits of matcha.

So happy with all the new Matcha Cafe openings in SF, especially this one since they are the first in the city to have freshly milled matcha in house! As soon as we stepped in we were greeted by really welcoming and knowledgeable staff who explained the menu in great detail since it was our first time. They hand whisk the drinks and lightly sweeten with cane sugar at default and you can add on more sugar after tasting if you prefer! I loved the taste and quality of my drink. Went in on a weekday so it was pretty easy to find street parking nearby.

I have gone to Blackbird a handful of times and have enjoyed the experience each time. Blackbird is primarily a bookstore, but they do have an outdoor window where you can order drinks ranging from matcha (Rocky's Matcha, if you're curious about which brand they use), lattes, and tea. They also carry a good amount of pastries (even mid-day, they have a lot of goodies), which I really appreciated. When you order your drink, you have to enter inside the bookstore to wait for your drink to be called, but you can take the time to stroll around and look at their book selection and trinkets. Heads up: the seating here is limited but very lovely. Inside, there are a couple of community tables, but their outdoor area is absolutely magical, with lush greenery and benches for you to enjoy your drinks. This time around, I got one of their seasonal drinks, a honey lavender vanilla latte, and I paired it with an Earl Grey olive oil loaf. The portion of the pastry was generous and moist, while the icing was not too sweet. Overall, a great pick for a cafe if you're in the area.

It was hard for me to concentrate on the speaker for the book talk since you can hear the noises from the cafe behind and also the sounds of other store customers all around you. That was the only downside, but I think it's a very charming bookstore otherwise.
