I was super excited to try Constance for their freshly milled matcha and it lived up to the hype! I got the signature matcha latte and it was basically everything I want my matcha to be. It was nice and creamy from the milk but the matcha flavor still shown through. My biggest pet peeve is when a matcha latte just tastes like milk or when the drink is grainy and thankfully Constance delivered. There's a ton of new matcha spots popping up and I have to Constance is one of the ones that actually serve a solid matcha that isn't simply dessert. Definitely come try the matcha! I may have to try the reserve one next time.
I really wanted to like this place due to all the hype with freshly milled matcha! I went on a weekday morning, so there wasn't much of a line. There are a few benches with small tables and bar seating by the window. Staff is friendly and does try to have conversations with customers when it's not too busy. It was a good experience and cool to see the machines (they have matcha tours apparently!), but the matcha was just alright. I ordered a simple iced oat milk matcha latte, less sweet (all drinks come default less sweet). The matcha flavoring was very light - I could hardly taste it. You could tell it was freshly milled though - it was a bit grainy.
Tried their freshly milled reserve matcha latte ($11.95) and I wanted to love it, but honestly it fell below my expectations. I've definitely had better matcha. I think the main issue is that the milk overpowers the matcha and dilutes its flavor by a lot. I wouldn't be opposed to trying just the matcha itself next time. I think it's super cool how they have it milled in house and you can see the machines in work towards the back of the store. There's street parking. The store itself is clean, compact, and you have the option to order with the staff or at the kiosk.
Matcha is everywhere around San Francisco. You can find matcha almost anywhere. I have been able to enjoy good matcha in many variations. Sometimes you can't rush the process of how matcha is made. Many places turn around matcha fast as the demand increases. There is a place which takes time to make matcha for Don Juan de la matcha in SF. It's located in the Outer Richmond neighborhood and it's called Constance Tea & Matcha. On a less sunny day and in a blue moon in the Outer Richmond ( not the city of Richmond) in SF I landed on Balboa street. Constance Tea & Matcha is the only store to grind tencha leaves into matcha in house using a stone mill. I had to order the freshly milled matcha. I got the iced Freshly Milled Usucha which was refreshing. Great taste and already wanted another one. You can taste the freshly milled matcha. For the weekend of Outside Lands expect longer wait times . Good matcha for Don Juan de la Matcha is worth the wait. Come go on a Summer stroll to grab some matcha with Don Juan de la Matcha which is "great "the only store which grind techa leaves to "date"in SF and cities around the "Golden Gate "and good matcha comes for those who "wait" Watch the tea "spill"with tea leaves grinding using a "stone mill" you have it warm or "chill" at Constance Tea & Matcha and it's so good you need a matcha "refill"
Cool efficient service in a bright clean modern space. Such a rarity to find a shop that mills their own matcha with machines from Japan! The freshly milled options can sell out daily so best to go early. Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Latte Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Americano Our drinks were high in quality and prepared expertly by staff who were definitely professionals at their craft, efficiently preparing matcha and tea orders to a steady stream of curious customers. Overall, however, the taste experience was good but not exceptional as far as high end tea experiences go so a 4 out of 5.
I am not a big matcha fan so thats why it's not a 5 star. But the tea definitely is literally milk tea. There is not much sugar and is not like a boba spot. I think my friends definitely enjoyed the matcha, but the milk tea is not something that i would go there for at all.
Heard many great things about this new matcha establishment and although I miss Sweet House, putting a Matcha spot here is tremendously smart. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of my experience. What I ordered: Matcha Einspanner MATCHA: 6/10 A lot of their drinks look promising both on the menu and in person. However, my first sip was very underwhelming. I was hoping for a smooth matcha sip, but it was very gritty and the Einspanner tasted more like a salted cream cheese top. The matcha was bitter and drying. Now although, the worker did give a disclaimer that some of their matcha profiles do contain this, it still wasn't the quality I was expecting. SERVICE: 9/10 Staff are very kind, friendly, and informative. I appreciate how the worker gave a disclaimer as to what their different matcha profiles are. AMBIANCE: 8/10 Bright ambient lighting with a lot of seating than I expected. There is window seating and single seats all across the wall in front of their open cafe concept which I love. I think I wouldn't mind stopping by next time but probably to get a regular simple matcha latte than their crafted signatures. I would like to give this place a try one more time.
This is a small Tea shop where you can order at the counter or at a kiosk. We got the Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Latte and Black Matcha Latte. The Freshly Milled Matcha Latte was meh. The Milk overpowers the Matcha, so basically tastes like Green Milk. If you want to taste the Matcha, definitely just get the Matcha itself and skip the Milk. The Black Matcha Latte was also meh in flavor. I don't really know how it is supposed to be a Matcha drink, but certainly didn't taste like Matcha. Also, the Black Matcha didn't really have a great flavor. It tasted like Milked down Black Tea. Nothing special. Overall, this place is way overhyped and overpriced especially for the taste.
I came to Constance a few weeks ago and had a great experience! I dropped in on a Monday morning, half an hour after opening. To my surprise, there was no line and plenty of street parking which is unheard of in SF! This matcha shop is super cute, small, clean, bright, and has the sweetest workers that are dedicated to their craft. My bestie and I were a little confused on how to order but the workers broke down the menu and explained the different varieties of teas they offer. They have an extensive menu of freshly ground teas and offer a variety of stone ground tea drinks such as matcha, hojicha, and even black matcha. However, the star of the show was their freshly milled matcha, which is pretty unique in the bay area :) The freshly milled matcha is ground, in-house, using a traditional Japanese granite stone mill or ishi-usu. At the back of the shop they have three mills on display, which was pretty cool! I ordered the freshly milled matcha latte w/ oat milk substitute and cream top. Fyi, each drink has a fixed sweetness level and you aren't able to add a cream top to any of their freshly milled reserve drinks. This ensures that you can taste the notes of the matcha and appreciate the true flavors. My drink was delicious-- smooth, creamy, lightly sweetened, slightly earthy, and deep green! This latte was truly a treat and I believe all matcha lovers should give this place a try.. 5/5! I will be back at this location to give their reserve matcha a try next time!
The shop itself is small with few seating options, and the mills are protected in glass cases in the back of the store. Constance stands out by being the only matcha shop in SF to offer freshly milled matcha. The question on the top of my mind - can you tell? And even more puzzling - does it taste better? I ordered the highest grade of the fresh milled series (11.95$ ouch!) while a friend ordered their classic matcha latte at half the cost, to put this to rest. I can say for certain: yes you can tell the difference, though debatable if it's worth the cost. Both were grassy matchas but the 11.95$ one had a rounder flavor which did not have the bitter aftertaste the classic matcha latte did. Unfortunately, I did not like either drinks very much.... Maybe I would come back to try their einspanner or hojicha options.
we managed to beat the rush and came around 11am on a Sunday. I got the matcha einspanner and it was well balanced, smooth, and creamy. the hojicha einspanner was solid too. Both drinks were not too sweet and very enjoyable. I liked that they had seating inside and the space was open and airy. Service was fast and friendly. Would def visit again!
Constance is the first to have freshly milled matcha in the Bay Area! Their tea is very high quality and the matcha has a nice earthy undertone. However, I felt that both the black matcha and regular matcha got too washed out by the milk in the latte. Matcha taste was very subtle, but the texture was good. Given the price and the current lines, I would probably wait for the hype to die down a little bit. But definitely worth a try if you're in the area! Overall: 4.1/5
Matcha was super tasty! No line on a July 2026 Sunday afternoon around 1:40pm. The unique drink is black matcha tea which is grounded black tea. Hojicha latte is grounded roasted jasmine tea. Matcha is grounded tencha (shade grown jasmine tea). Order a matcha cream latte ($7.25) and a black matcha latte (7.25). I think the cream part was not needed, so I would order just the matcha latte. The matcha is smooth, had a great balance of freshness and it is not nutty. The black matcha was interesting, has a settle taste, but it is the most caffeinated of all the drinks. The flavor is not as fragrant as the matcha. Overall, the cafe has a great tea taste. A couple of benches with small tables to enjoy a cup of tea.
Came here on a Friday afternoon and there was a decent line. I enjoyed the clean minimalist aesthetic and loved seeing how the matcha was milled in house. Freshly Milled Reserve Usucha $9.95 (2/5) The matcha is indeed smooth and earthy but for the price I was disappointed. I ordered it to go but when they called my name, I received it in a glass which the cashier realized when I looked confused and told the person making the drinks that it was to go. The guy just dumped it in the cup and just it on the table but I saw that there was still a bit of matha in the glass cup. For a 2 oz pour, the matcha was definitely light where I prefer a deeper earthiness. If you are into lighter taste profiles then this may be for you. Black matcha latte $7.25 (2/5) wished the matcha flavor was more prominent but it was lost in the black tea flavor. I do appreciate the sweetness being 20% standard but could possibly use less milk. Hojicha einspanner $7.25 (4/5) The drink was not gritty at all and I enjoyed the saltiness and of the cream which was delicate and really made the drink shine. If the hojicha flavor was a smidge deeper, this would definitely be a 5/5 for me. Quality is there but just doesn't fit my personal palate. read more

Probably one of my new top matcha spots in the city! Finally made it out to Outer Richmond to give it a try, and it didn't disappoint. The freshly milled matcha had an amazing deep green color in the latte, and the flavor was strong and smooth. There was quite a bit of a line on a Saturday morning, and the store did feel a bit cramped. Really cool to see the matcha being ground in the back of the store. read more

Had a picnic at Golden Gate park and picked up matcha, cassia black, black matcha and hojicha; basically everything the very kind staff recommended. And wow, I was the most popular person at picnic! The drinks were a banger! Here's the breakdown. Matcha - pure umami bombs. Fresh, rich, and velvety. Cassia black tea - whaaaaat! Coffee-like, creamy. Black matcha - deep. Chocolate. Milk tea-like. Hojicha - roasted and toasted. Smooth. Love the drinks here. Great spot. It's clean. Drinks came out quickly. Walked two blocks down on 36th ave and you'll get to the lake at Golden Gate park. Sipping drinks on the lake was just so nice. read more
The hype has died and the crowds are gone and now I know why. I tried the black matcha einspanner that just tasted like watery HK milk tea. My mom got the freshly milled matcha latte and didn't like it. Didn't have much matcha flavor snd tasted more like milk. She brought it home and added some guava jam from TJs to make it drinkable. read more
Freshly milled matcha! Located in the outer Richmond District, there is often a line but it moves decently along. They offer different tea drinks but the milled matcha shines here. We had the hot matcha latte and also the hot Americano style matcha made with only hot water & matcha without any sugar. The staff members focus on preparing each order with care. Worth waiting a little more for our order. There is seating inside this small shop but people do rotate in and out and don't seem to linger too long so we did get nice eats. Take a little time to read the information posted on the walls and photos as well as check out the large mechanical milling machine at the back of the shop. Our drinks were very good and we will return again. read more
Quite impressed! I ordered the Freshly Milled Matcha Latte & it was so smooth & delicious. I am a self-proclaimed matcha connoisseur & I thought this was the best quality matcha I've ever had! I went during soft openly & was able to get my latte in a timely fashion though there was a long line. Staff were friendly & the shop was cute with some seating. I can't wait to go back especially bc it's only a few blocks away from my apt! read more

Premium matcha shop, made in house. Very unique and a premium service which you pay for. More than a comparable coffee drink like a double espresso. Definitely good quality matcha but you'll also include the whole experience. Tour of the matcha mill stone and description of what you'll be consuming. Worth stopping by and having a beverage with a friend. Limited seating indoors. A Parklett is being built and should be ready during summer of 2026. read more
new matcha spot in Outer Richmond they mill matcha in-store, which is a pretty cool touch. if they sell out of fresh milled, they'll serve ground matcha instead tried their fresh milled matcha and it was actually really smooth and solid compared to a lot of other matcha spots. flavor is on the lighter side though, so if you like a stronger, more intense matcha taste, this might not be for you they also have a reserve fresh milled matcha that's around $11, curious how different it tastes came back a second time and tried their hojicha latte too. loved the flavor on that one as well overall, a nice addition to the Richmond area if you're into matcha read more

I waited about 20mins for my drink on a Saturday morning. the matcha itself is high quality, has an umami/vegetal flavor and is full bodied. a 12oz cup is $7.75 but worth the quality! read more
We tried two of their drinks, Freshly Milled Reserve Matcha Latte & Black Matcha Latte. This is my first time having milled matcha and omg my life has changed The flavor is so deep, rich and umami. The color is beautiful, so vibrant green. The Black matcha latte was very interesting, it almost has a charcoal-chocolate flavor. It's oxidized tea leaves so it gives it a malty flavor. Line moved fast enough considering all the work that goes into a matcha beverage. I enjoyed the freshness of the tea even if it was a bit on the pricey side to keep me from coming here too often. There are a few seats in the inside so you can sit side by side with someone but maybe not a great location for a first date and get to know you beverage. read more

Friend and I got here right around 10am on a wednesday and there was already a line. It cleared up after we ordered so the line was only about 10 ppl long. Their matcha mills weren't running when we were there btw. Tried both fresh milled matchas as lattes bc we are dairy fiends. Did a blind taste test of both pre mixing and the reserve matcha is VERY umami/thick/grassy/slightly astringent. Non reserve is a lot lighter but still good flavor, wonder if they use different amounts of matcha since one is much thicker than the other. However, once we mixed them in with the milk the difference was relatively negligible. Would just get the regular fresh milled matcha unless you're drinking it as usucha. There's some seating and small circular tables but not enough to work on fyi. read more
I guess "freshly milled" doesn't always translate to "good quality". A couple of people in our party who got the regular matcha latte felt it was underwhelming. I got their signature "black matcha" which is a misnomer because the drink has nothing to do with the traditional matcha that we all know. Instead, it's basically a black tea that has been ground up into powder - so the drink just tasted like a less milky version of Hong Kong milk tea read more

Really enjoyed my visit last weekend! The staff was super knowledgeable and helpful. I told him what I was in the mood for and he made great recommendations based on what I liked. I ended up getting two drinks, the reserved matcha latte and the hojicha latte. The matcha was smooth with no bitterness and had a nice balance overall. The hojicha had a strong roasted flavor that I loved. Both drinks were amazing. The owner was also really welcoming and gave customers a tour of the cafe, including the tea milling machines. What makes this place special is that they mill their matcha fresh every day, and you can really taste the difference. The space is on the smaller side but there are seats available. It looks like they are adding a parklet which will be a nice touch for enjoying your drink on a nice day. Overall a great experience. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back! read more

Love the concept of this place with freshly milled matcha but the drink didn't live up to my expectations at all. The freshly milled matcha simply tastes like what I would get from Starbucks, overall profile is lacking matcha flavor/umami for an almost $10 drink! Tried Constance during a weekday, which very minimal line and staff was helpful giving recommendations and also explaining their milling process. Tried the Black and regular Matcha Einspanner, which were both tasty! The Black Matcha just tastes like black tea. Their drinks start as less sweet that I found myself adding a bit more simple syrup to it to make it more sweet. They did come out to about $8.5/cup and I felt that the size to cost ratio was a bit steep, that I finished my drink fairly quick. read more

One of the best matcha spots my husband and I have ever been to! From the moment we walked in, you could tell they truly care about the experience--not just serving a drink. Scott took the time to explain how their traditional matcha mill works, the different types of tea they offer, and what makes each one unique. It never felt rushed, and you could really tell how passionate and knowledgeable he is. We learned so much while enjoying our drinks. The matcha itself was incredible--fresh, smooth, vibrant, and not bitter at all. You can definitely taste the quality. Watching the matcha being freshly stone-milled made the experience even more special. If you're a matcha lover (or even just curious to try authentic matcha), this place is absolutely worth visiting. Amazing drinks, exceptional service, and an experience you don't get at your typical café. We'll definitely be back! Oh and P.S -- the place looks very relaxing! I had 24 hours in the Bay, and as a matcha fan, this was at the top of my list!! It was worth it! I wish we had a place like this in LA! We tried the freshly milled matcha, which was so fragrant and had such a vibrant and bright flavor. It was better than the regular match, which was still one of my top matcha lattes I've had. The black matcha is also super unique and is not too sweet (a compliment if you're Asian ). All the choices make it so hard to choose but you can't go wrong w any of them! We were lucky enough to get a tour of the place and learn abt the matcha milling process by the owner Bill. He is so knowledgeable and excited to share his love of w tea everyone. I wish they would open in LA!! But I'll def be back if I'm in town Tip: We went on a Sat morning at opening, and the line wasn't too bad and moved quickly. As a straight matcha drinker, this is the gold standard. The deep umami flavor + small hint of bitterness of the freshly milled matcha is next level. I appreciate that they serve usuchas here. If you really want to compare matcha quality, do it without milk. I tried a reserve usucha and a freshly milled matcha latte and loved them both. I'm a huge matcha nerd so I attended the asian art museum talk with constance. They were really knowledgeable and talked about the history and science + process of making matcha. Genuine and passionate owner. They care a lot about the craft and providing freshly milled matcha is such a unique experience. Staff is really nice and friendly. They explained the full menu and answered my questions. Ambiance is fine, but I wish there was more seating. They're building a small parklet in the front. Paid parking meters in the front and free street parking on the residential streets. This place is legit. read more

Bold tea flavors from Kyoto and Taiwan which smell amazing and tastes even better. I really enjoyed the iced black matcha and iced hojicha both with oat milk, sweetened with cane sugar. I also tried their freshly milled reserve matcha from Uji and it was incredibly smooth! The staff were friendly and my drinks came out quickly. I even got a tour of the place and was able to see their mill machines live in action. The ambiance was nice well lit with portraits of matcha. read more
So happy with all the new Matcha Cafe openings in SF, especially this one since they are the first in the city to have freshly milled matcha in house! As soon as we stepped in we were greeted by really welcoming and knowledgeable staff who explained the menu in great detail since it was our first time. They hand whisk the drinks and lightly sweeten with cane sugar at default and you can add on more sugar after tasting if you prefer! I loved the taste and quality of my drink. Went in on a weekday so it was pretty easy to find street parking nearby. read more

I make matcha at home every so often using ceremonial grade matcha from Japan. By no means am I an expert but I definitely appreciate great matcha and know that not all retail stores are the same. That said, Constance is a clear cut above the rest at least among the shops in the US in terms of their matcha quality! Seeing the milling stones and tasting the fresh matcha adds an entirely new experience to enjoying an already well made drink. We tried the matcha latte and compared it to the Reserve matcha latte. They were both good, not too sweet (with syrup on the side if you want to add more yourself, and the Reserve had noticeably more depth and umami. It's a small but efficient, friendly shop. I'll be back again whenever I'm in the area! read more
A very welcome addition to the Balboa Cafe corridor. The service is genuinely friendly and they took the time to explain some of the lesser known options despite a line. I never felt rushed and they even gave my daughter a little packet of fruit snacks! We chose the regular matcha latte and the black matcha - both iced and opted for both on the more sweet side (you can adjust sweetness level). Winners! You can taste the quality and the care they took to prepare our drinks. Ambiance is clean and bright with almost a laboratory feel. A matcha lab! It might as well be given the painstaking process to mill the highest quality matcha powder. You can even see the mills in action in the back corner of the cafe and if you are lucky a crew member will give you a quick breakdown of where they source the leaves and how they mill it in house for the freshest most mellow taste. It's a must visit in the neighborhood. Paired with a Laundromat bagel, Devils Teeth sandwich, Butter Love pastry or a Cielito Lindo breakfast burrito and it's the perfect start to the day. Highly recommend! I just think they should have more signage about what they sell because so many folks walked by and had no idea what the line out the door was for! read more

New place alert! It's been a while since I got the jitters from matcha. But I felt a great boost of energy and no crash! Just be warned, don't slam it down like I did. When have you seen fresh grinded matcha as well!! Like hello this is new and cool. And they have a black matcha, I really liked this one. They do a standard 20% sugar and offer simple syrup on the side. I liked all the drinks and even just tea drinks! Definitely recommend coming here if you get the chance. Their premium matcha is limited due it being grinded onsite, so there may be a wait. But let's be honest in Japan we wait for matcha to be hand whisked in front of us as well. So stop here if you can!! read more

Plenty of seating while waiting. We went on their soft opening and the matcha esp fresh milled does taste different. We loved both the hojicha einspanner & the freshly reserve milled matcha latte. It isn't too sweet and the hojicha has a nice fresh little bit salty foam top! Really cute inside. There is a wait but they do market themselves for being chill and slower to create the experience for customers. Would return when I'm back on this side of the city :) read more

This place pushes the envelope of tea offerings with their black matcha. The name is clever. Aren't nothing wrong with that. Matcha translates to ground tea, so black matcha is simply finely ground black tea instead of green tea. Makes sense! I like the unique taste and this option. It's thicker, malty, and deep. Since milk tea is just brewed black tea, this feels like a fresh, elevated version. Full bodied. Thank you for giving me this option! It's awesome to see this level of variation and creativity on the menu. Will come back to try the other teas! Good amount of seating to have catch up chats. Not much working space but I guess that's the point; a laptop free place to just chat. Minimalistic design and comfort. Very nice touch. read more

We waited about 15 minutes for our order. The place had a long line. The staff was nice, though it could be a bit hard to hear them due to all the noise inside. The space is small, so be prepared to stand outside for awhile. What we ordered: Hojicha Latte w/ Whole Milk. The hojicha was smooth, and the flavor was strong! It had a bit of a chocolate/coffee taste :) Freshly Milled Matcha Latte w/ Oat Milk. I wasn't able to tell the difference between a regular matcha latte and the freshly milled matcha latte. Maybe it's because I added oat milk. The drink still had a good matcha flavor, but it could have been stronger. I would try this again if I was in the area! read more

3.5 stars We visited on a Friday afternoon around 2pm, and there was no line. We ordered the Black Matcha Einspanner and the Freshly Milled Matcha Latte. If you're curious about the Black Matcha, the menu describes it as "regenerative organic ground black tea." This was my first time hearing of "black matcha," so I was intrigued and wanted to try it. However, I found it to be pretty underwhelming. It mostly tasted like a black milk tea, which makes sense given the description. There wasn't anything particularly unique or memorable about it. The Freshly Milled Matcha Latte was good but fairly standard. It tasted like a typical matcha latte and didn't really stand out compared to other matcha spots. Overall, the drinks were fine, but nothing left a lasting impression. I'd consider giving this place another try if I'm already in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. read more

As someone who prefers a simple matcha latte over a matcha dessert drink, I was excited to discover this new matcha and tea shop while visiting SF. I ordered their matcha latte and hojicha einspanner. Lovee that their drinks are already less sweet by default. I enjoyed the hojicha so much that I came back the next day to get it again and also tried the cassia black tea latte. All 3 drinks were rich in flavor, the hojicha tasted nutty and chocolatey, the matcha tasted earthy and clean and the cassia black tea had notes of coffee and dark chocolate flavor which was really interesting. I came around early afternoon at both times and didn't have to wait for my drinks for more than 10 mins. The interior is small but cute. Very Japandi style. I enjoyed reading their tea information cards and watching the matcha being milled right in front of us. I appreciate the education and authenticity they are trying to bring to their customers. The craft of matcha is like a ritual which encourages you to be present and in the moment and that made me appreciate the drinks even more. I'll definitely be thinking about this matcha until the next time I visit!! read more

Constance is such a cute, aesthetic café, and I loved the overall vibe of the space. Seeing the matcha mill on site was a really nice touch and made me excited to try their matcha. Unfortunately, the matcha latte didn't quite live up to my expectations. The matcha itself was a beautiful, vibrant green, so visually it looked promising. However, the flavor was a bit underwhelming. The milk overpowered the matcha, making it taste more like a regular milk latte than a true matcha latte. I was hoping for a stronger, more pronounced matcha flavor. That said, the café itself is lovely, and I can definitely appreciate the atmosphere and attention to detail. My friend and I were excited to try Constance since we heard that the matcha is milled in the store. We came on a Sunday late afternoon and there were a few people in line when we got to the store, with more people sitting inside or standing outside the store enjoying their drinks. The worker at the register was kind enough to explain the difference between the milled matcha and the milled reserve matcha. I got the freshly milled matcha latte with oat milk and a little more sweet and my friend got the freshly milled matcha latte with whole milk and less sweet. We could taste the difference in sweetness and milk flavor between the two drinks. The matcha was pretty light and had a slight grainy texture to it which maybe helped me taste the matcha a little more. If you like drinks on the sweeter side, it's probably better to get more sweet or 100% sweet. If you prefer a stronger matcha flavor, then it's probably better to get less sweet if you don't mind the flavor being too bitter. read more

The matcha was nothing special in my opinion. I have never not finished any matcha but for this one I had to throw it out. It might just be me though, because I like it with strawberry. read more
