    Salmon in Truffle Soy (DD)

I'm a bit conflicted about this place! On the bright side, they have one of the best matcha drinks in the Bay. Yup, I loved it. My strawberry matcha was smooth, rich, and clearly made with high-quality matcha. They're popular for a reason! Now for the things I didn't like. They were super busy around noon, and somehow they completely forgot my order. I waited about 45 minutes for my food, thinking they were just busy with delivery orders. Then I noticed two groups who arrived well after me had already gotten their food (and almost finished their bento), and it finally clicked, they had forgotten my order. As soon as I told them, my food came out within 5 minutes. Okay, rookie mistake. But then the bento wasn't even good. I ordered the salmon with truffle soy sauce, and the salmon portion was tiny. The vegetable sides were bland, mashed potatoes are tasteless and lacked any flavor. I'm disappointed, but at least their matcha absolutely served! So, will I come back? For the matcha, yes. For the food? Hell nah!

4.5/5 Stopped by for a tasty takeout lunch! Got the Truffle Salmon (RAW) and had them remove the gluten sides. The staff was so kind and helped notify the staff of the request. Looks like they gave me more potato salad to cover the loss of the other items. That was kind! I also ordered the mango matcha! It was so creamy and delicious. Excited to try more things here. There's not much inside seating but you can walk a block or so and get to a cute park!

The line forming right at opening on a Saturday should tell you everything you need to know about how people feel about this place -- and after trying it myself, I get it. My partner and I arrived right when they opened and there was already a solid queue, so come prepared for a little wait. Totally worth it though for the right drinks. We got the Strawberry Matcha and the Matcha Latte with Sea Salt Foam. The Strawberry Matcha was delicious and a great example of what they do really well -- the fruit matchas here shine and the strawberry flavor paired beautifully without overpowering the matcha. If fruity matcha drinks are your thing, this is your spot. The Matcha Latte with Sea Salt Foam was enjoyable but didn't quite hit the same way. The sea salt foam was a nice touch, but the matcha flavor itself was on the subtle side -- if you're someone who likes a bold, matcha-forward drink you might find yourself wanting more. Still good, just not the standout of the two. I'll definitely be back, but I'm taking my own advice and skipping the weekend rush next time. And next visit I'm adding a bento box to the order because it felt wrong to leave without trying the food.

Oh my god I got the Mango Milk Matcha Foam and the matcha was so smooth took me right back to Japan, and they did a great job balancing the mango with matcha, usually fruits tend to overpower the matcha. 11/10 drink. I also tried my friends regular matcha latte, but tbh it felt watered down, so don't know if they just have a consistency problem but I'd risk it and try their matcha fs.

The best matcha in sf :)) couldn't not come when im here. Strawberry matcha is def better than mango matcha... we all love it ! Came before the rush again and it tasted the same as last time! Super happy with the consistency.

The best matcha in SF imo. They're always consistent with their drinks and their food bentos are so good. Salmon truffle soy is one of our faves and duck breast is good too. Drinks: matcha salted cream 10/10 Strawberry matcha 10/10 Red bean matcha 10/10 Mango matcha 10/10 Service: fast and friendly Ambiance busy, small place to dine in, hard to find parking

I came back to Komeya No Bento to give it another shot and to try their matcha. This time, I went with a few friends, and we each ordered a matcha and a bento. I don't like to leave harsh criticism or poor reviews, but unfortunately, my experience here was even worse this second time. My friends and I ordered at the same time, but for some reason, my order took so long. I watched as people behind me repeatedly received their food before me. And I did politely ask the worker to check on my order, to which the employee said they'd take a look. But then 30 minutes passed, and I was still waiting. They were starting to close up (they close at 2 PM), so I had to ask again...The employee said they'd check (again), and told me mine would be the next one out...I understand they were busy, so I don't want to be too harsh, but I ended up waiting at least 45 minutes. I think they forgot my order. I ordered a chicken chashu bento, and I'm pretty sure the chicken was raw. Even my friend pointed it out. I've attached a photo below, too. I just don't understand how they spent 45 minutes on my order, just for the chicken to come out raw. Honestly, the food was pretty flavorful, and I enjoyed my red bean mochi matcha, but between the excessive wait, the undercooked chicken, and the considerable price tag (these bentos aren't cheap), I don't see myself returning or recommending Komeya No Bento.

Okay where do I even begin?? I LOVE LOVE THIS PLC! It's all over TikTok and it truly deserves all the hype!! A bit pricy, bento was $27 and matcha is $8-$9. Only accept cash, order at kiosk. Food/drink ready within 20min. Limited seating but cute wooden seating/mini table stands. It's definitely a sit and chat or drop-in for lunch situation! Perfect if you're walking around and exploring the area. Parking is hard ofc. The truffle was rich and complimented the fresh fish. Rice wasn't reasoned. The concept is fairly simple. Could I remake it at home? Yes. But the assembly is phenomenal! The drink was delicious, but very sweet. Very creamy, I felt like I was consuming straight up cream, and less of a liquid matcha. There is oat and whole milk options. The mango was very fresh and tart. Overall, not a place I would go to all the time, just bc it's pricy. But a tasty small bite when exploring SF from time to time!

mango matcha is sooo yummy!! one of the few places imo where the mango does not overpower the matcha. it compliments it sooo much and the matcha is great itself. SERVICE, omgg shout out to the workers!! i ordered online at 2 and after i made the purchase it said that it would be ready for pickup at 5 pm called and they said they could make it for 2!! then i dropped one the drinks (kms) and went back to ask if they could add some milk or matcha foam and they offered to make me another one #blessed #ily #ripthecar

Didn't get the matcha which seemed to be what everyone else was after but the bento was pretty good. The fish was fresh and well flavored but the ratio of the box seemed a little off with the amount of rice compared to fish. Also it was around 27$ which seemed pricey for that we were getting. The flavor was great and I def recommend going at least once to experience it but warning it is very small and super crowded.

tldr; poorly run but a yummy dessert drink (perhaps not for the geniune matcha lovers) i've got a bone to pick with this place. you think a place with this much popularity and high traffic would be more organized but no it's actually one of the least organized drink places ever. we ordered online before we got there and fun fact they literally do not start making your online order until you get there and "check in" with them. and their check in process was bad they make you speak to a worker in the back who literally runs back and forth between the kitchen and the drink making area and is not there half the time. so like if you don't go speak to someone your drink literally will not get made i stood next to some girl who had a pick up time of 11:35 (i got there 11:45) and she just didn't talk to anyone so they never made her order. made me rlly appreciate places like heytea and tsaocaa which i know r chains but still. the drink itself was yummy it was more like a mango milk drink with a hint of matcha which comes from the matcha foam they layer on top so if you're a real matcha lover (unlike me) you might be disappointed. it lowkey reminded me of the heytea mango cloud drink but the heytea one is a bit better cuz it's more mango less milk (this one is the other way around). i've heard ordering at the front is just as bad if not worse.

5/5 for the duck breast bento and 3/5 for the matcha latte. I really liked the furikake on the rice and could eat the rice on its own because of how yummy it was. The duck was so tender and flavorful. I also liked the potato salad a lot. The glazed sweet potato added a nice sweet balance to the saltiness of the rest of the bento. I thought that the matcha latte was more milk than matcha. Also I got it with less ice so it wasn't as cold as I'd thought, but that was my mistake. I got lucky with when I went because a huge line formed right after I ordered. My bento was ready for pickup before the drinks. There's also only two small tables inside for eating and a bench for waiting.

    Amy C.

The online ordering process was seamless, and only had to wait 10 more minutes before my food was ready. The quality of the matcha really stood out, they're generous with their Marukyu matcha, and it shows. The drink is easily a 5/5. Unfortunately, the bento box was underwhelming. It lacked visual appeal, and the salmon was sliced unusually thin, some of the thinnest I've had eaten locally. At $27, it didn't feel like a good value, and the sides were fairly unremarkable (a small piece of cold corn cob, potato salad, and a few cucumber slices). My friend ordered the salmon ochazuke, which also fell short, with very minimal toppings for $24. The photos honestly capture the experience better than word. The presentation and portions were just disappointing overall :(

Food 4/5: we ordered the pork katsu rice bento with mini creamy ramen and the Yu Ling chi chicken bento with the spicy miso mini ramen. Everything tasted fresh and hot. We particularly liked the pork katsu, it was perfectly crispy, juicy and well seasoned with the katsu sauce. The ramen didn't have much topping (just scallion and Naruto) but the soup and noodles texture were great. I was looking forward to the Yu Lin chi chicken but was not a big fan of the sauce flavor, it was salty and slightly one note. Rice was well cooked in the bento but I could do without the edamame, they weren't cooked long enough so it was hard to get out of the shell and bland. Service 3/5: we were seated pretty immediately but had to wait quite awhile before anyone served us, it might be because we were more towards the corner and the restaurant was busy. We had to get up to find a server to help us with checking out because no one ever came to check up on us. Ambiance 4/5: nice space, slightly cramped, but generally nice with the exposed brick walls and high ceiling. There's also outdoor seating available here.

We walked into a refined but welcoming space where the sushi counter is the main focus, and the meal unfolds course by course in front of us. There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. What makes Kusakabe memorable is the craftsmanship and pacing of the meal. The chefs take time to explain each course, making the experience feel personal rather than rushed. For $18, you get an incredible spread: * your choice of gyoza, shumai, or tofu * a California roll or avocado roll * a protein of your choice Plus it all comes with edamame, miso soup, and seaweed salad. Honestly? That's my kind of deal. Everything we tried was delicious. In addition to the lunch box, we ordered a dragon roll and a dynamite roll, both of which were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully done. My husband went with the Una Ten Donburi. It was tasty, but at $30, it did feel a bit steep compared to the rest of the menu. The restaurant looked like your typical Japanese style space with the sushi rollers at the entrance and simple tables and decor. I do have two minor negatives worth mentioning. First, the edamame was cold and unsalted. I'm an edamame lover, and nothing beats it hot, freshly steamed, and generously showered in salt. So that was a little disappointing. Second, our server (I believe his name was Kayz) seemed visibly annoyed when we asked to split the check. As a server myself, I know this isn't rocket science, and guests should never be made to feel uncomfortable for something so standard, especially after there had already been a small mix-up with our roll order (we received two dynamite rolls instead of one dynamite and one dragon). We didn't make a fuss at the time because mistakes happen, but the attitude at the end definitely stood out. That said, the food itself was solid, the lunch special is a fantastic value, and overall we still had a good experience. I would absolutely return and would recommend this spot, just hoping for a smoother service experience next time.

However, at the last minute, I went with the $19 Ika Yaki, a whole BBQ squid sliced and saturated in teriyaki sauce with a dab of shichimi mayo (Photo 8). The portion was generous and the texture was firm with enough elasticity. Unfortunately the teriyaki sauce did nothing to enhance the dish, and I wished they served it on the side. I also ordered the $8 Agedashi Tofu, usually a foolproof appetizer for me. It certainly looked right (Photo 9), but I was unpleasantly surprised how tongue-burning hot it was. The cubes of tofu must've just come right out of the deep fryer. The dashi broth helped calm the heat down but a little too late. I'm sure glad I sprung for the $3 bowl of Rice (Photo 10). That calmed what was left of my tongue down. "Inexpensive Japanese in downtown San Francisco financial district"…read more My son and I stopped here for dinner randomly on a Friday night just before 6pm. He just visited Japan a few months ago and had a hankering for some chicken katsu. It's a small, narrow establishment, not far from the See's Candy store, but well-lit. One orders on a set of tablets at the front of the restaurant and then sits down. I ordered the chicken katsu don, which has the chicken katsu above vegetables, rice, and egg. My son wanted the chicken katsu curry rice, and also was eager for the Takoyaki (which has octopus). There was a complementary water station in the back (which we didn't notice before ordering bottles). I was impressed the entrees were all under $20 before tax and tip-- great for downtown SF. We didn't anticipate complementary miso soup, but we got it, and it was tasty. The takooyaki arrived next-- maybe 6 pieces and quite good. When you pop it in your mouth and bite, you get a burst of milk-like flavor in you mouth. I frankly couldn't taste the octopus, but that's OK... it was still yummy. I really liked my chicken katsu don-- I wanted some veggies, and the cabbage underneath was good, as was the seasoning. The chicken itself was excellent. My son said it wasn't quite as good as in Japan but agreed it was still good. The portion size was big-- I wasn't quite able to finish all the rice in mine. Service was fine-- I don't remember them checking on us after we got food, but we really didn't need anything since we'd already paid, water was available, etc. The restaurant itself was clean, too. I did stop at the washroom upstairs, and it had nice wooden floors, a large plant, etc., and clean overall. Overall, a solid choice at an amazing price for the area, so I'm happy to give 5 stars.

Stopped by on a Monday afternoon and there was no wait in line. I got the hire katsu (tenderloin)…read morewhile my friend got the regular tonkatsu. Food came out quickly and service was fine. The tables and floors were a bit sticky and dirty which is why I knocked off a star. Overall this is not a bad spot though and the katsu was good, not dry.
