Cheddar Style Tray with Onion Rings and Wisconsin Cheddar cheese bites
Chloe M.

Super friendly greeting, exceptionally fast service! The cheddar style burger is always my go to at Cookout and this visit did not disappoint. They didn't skimp on the bacon and the burger was cooked perfectly. Onion rings and Wisconsin Cheddar bites were fried perfectly, crispy and not greasy.

Better rating these times around. The food is still the same cookout taste and menu as years past, which is good and consistent (especially their bbq sandwich, which I find very underrated for a fast food location). The past few times, the visits were pleasant and never felt rushed putting in my order while inside and a line growing. Inside itself is fairly clean for the most part; good amount of seats inside and out. Always gave me more than enough sauce when I've asked.

I had to try Cookout which is a Greensboro staple. The food was really inexpensive, which is a plus, especially in an area that has a lot of college students. The food was nothing to write home about; however the milkshakes are really good.

I wanted a mint chocolate chip milkshake and went into the cookout and ordered two. I got the drinks and they both looked like a chocolate milkshake. I asked them about it but they said that if I mixed it I would see the green??? I went out tasted the shake and boom its chocolate. I go back inside and tell then its just a chocolate shake (cause u know mint chocolate chip is green and got chocolate chips in it) and they take it back and fix it for me. Turns out after 5 more minutes of waiting they bring me back the same drinks with some green syrup on top...... still 0 chocolate chips, still same chocolate milkshake.... I just wanted my mint chocolate chip milkshake. Rip

Really?

Food good, nothing special, just like any other cookout. On the other hand...ordered a milkshake and clearly the cup busted before leaving the store and they thought a receipt sticker would do.

Carolina burger with Cajun fries and cheese bites

Been coming here for years. This one happens to be near my new house. So glad they have the "Walking taco". Sometimes you come to a cookout and they don't have it. Got a typical Carolina burger with the Cajun fries and cheese bites. Delicious as always. I tend to come earlier so they aren't precook if burgers. Shake was a chocolate with chocolate chips and cheesecake. Yeah I know.... It's all diet food. Everything was great and the cashier was super friendly.

No chicken in my chicken bacon ranch wrap
Caleb B.

I order a chicken bacon ranch wrap with no ranch add barbecue. There's no chicken, just chicken lettuce and barbecue sauce. They were polite when I was there but I didn't notice till returning to work with no time to make it right. Called and got no answer.....No chicken is devious work.

Not the cheesecake in my cheesecake milkshake.

This is the closest cookout to me, but it might be worth a drive to avoid it the future. Last time I went there was a small piece of plastic in my milkshake, but I took it in stride. Accidents happen. Today there's a whole piece of... something. It's unacceptable.

Dodging a huge rainstorm we decided to sit at the bar and the staff was very friendly and attentive. We sampled a beer or two before deciding on a couple suds and the poutine appetizer while we decided on the main event. The place was fairly busy and they do have a decent outdoor patio also. It's a chill, hole in the wall, neighborhood watering hole type of place. We chatted with a few locals and my wife and I enjoyed the atmosphere. They had some great beers on tap including several from Foothills brewery and also full liquor bar to send a few rounds for any occasion. I settled on the Mad Haddock (I know who orders the fish at a burger place) and my lady had French onion burger. The deep fried asparagus was a playful side that was memorable. We both really enjoyed the choices. The fries could've been more crisp but overall they were passable. The haddock sandwich was incredible and that tartar sauce was incredible. The sandwich was one of those that you don't put down after a few bites. I enjoyed the food, friendly service and conversation with locals. They recommended a bottle shop connected to a laundromat not far away but we had to get back on the road. If you are in the Greensboro area Hops is worth a stop for happy hour, lunch or dinner.

We started with the Fried Goat Cheese Balls and the Fried Cauliflower, and both were excellent. The goat cheese balls were crispy on the outside and creamy inside, while the cauliflower was perfectly fried and packed with flavor. I ordered the Jalapeño Popper Burger special, and it was phenomenal. Juicy, cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of heat and all the flavors you'd expect from a great jalapeño popper. Easily one of the better specialty burgers I've had. They also have a great beer and wine selection, which made it easy to find the perfect pairing with our meal. If you're traveling and looking for something far better than the usual fast food off the interstate, Hops Burger Bar is absolutely worth the quick detour. Great food, great service, and a place we'll make a point to stop at again the next time we're passing through.

It was quiet inside, but that didn't deter the staff from efficiently taking our order and getting us burgers hot and fresh within about 15-20 minutes! I like that it's an order at the counter place, with a very distinct feel of getting a higher end burger at a place with waiter service. I think more restaurants would greatly benefit to change to this model, not everything needs a waiter, and customers are generally happy to handle getting their own drinks while saving the tip. Anyhow, I went with the smashburger special, two smashed out patties topped with American cheese, pickles, onions, shredded lettuce, and burger sauce. I got tots for my side, because frankly, I think tots are the superior potato consumption method. The patties had a nice crust on them, plenty of beefy grilled flavor, nicely seasoned. The cheese and onions provided balance, and acidic hits from the pickle topped it all off. Very tasty. The tots were fried crispy just how I like them. Everyone else at the table had a similar premium experience with their items, and we all agreed this was a great pivot. We'd come back!

I ordered onion rings as my side. They are cut in house and hand breaded. They also come with a dipping sauce. The onion rings were good but greasy. Next time, I'll opt for the hand cut French fries! The serving size of fries is enormous! Food order is placed at a counter. If you chose to eat in, you're given a number and food is brought to your table. Only tables in this restaurant: some with only chairs and others with chairs on one side and a bench seat on the other side. All seats are hard, and with NO padding. The restaurant had a good business, with 80% capacity inside and people coming in and out constantly for to go orders. I ended up here because the restaurant I planned to visit was closed for renovations. I feel like it was my lucky day, as this burger was much better than I would have gotten there. I will return!

After ordering, it took maybe 5 minutes to get our food which felt decent for the fresh food! There was a steady flow of to-go orders so it seems to be a popular spot. I ordered the Popper Topper Burger, although I do get the jalapeños on the side. I was expecting a little bit more to be honest. It was cheesy and delicious, but the patty itself was lacking any flavor. This was shocking because the menu described it to be "Cajun seasoned" but it felt very plain. The fries were my favorite part by far!!! Unlike other places, this had plenty of toppings. Normally, once you eat the top layer the underside is dry. Not here! I was covered in cheese sauce by the end of the meal. If you're in the mood for some really good fries, definitely check it out!

While the exterior is a far cry from the "vibrant patio" the restaurant description promises, the interior opens into a clean, bright space, which is more spacious than one might expect. On the front counter you will see an artistically designed menu board, depicting the many creative offerings available here. When I invited my coworkers to join me here for lunch, 2 immediately began ardently affirming my choice, regretful they could not join me but promising I would love it. In this moment, vague memories of them talking about this "really good burger place at the gas station" for months on end began to come back to me, as I realized they had been indirectly recommending it for a while. On the other hand, my 3rd coworker, who was in a separate room and had not heard their high praises, told me that it was "overrated" and "fine but not that special." Lol. Needless to say, I had absolutely no idea what to make of it all when I arrived. When I walked in, the woman behind the counter asked if I had ever been there, before patiently walking me through the various sections of the menu and helping me pick something out. I settled on the Popper Topper, which promised Cajun spices and fried jalapeño coins, among other various toppings. At its smallest size (big), it only cost $10.99. I also ordered bacon and cheddar fries. My initial impressions upon receiving my food (quite quickly, I might add) is that 1) the restaurant's name is perfect and 2) this is a very good quantity per dollar and an absolutely absurd calorie per dollar meal, especially in 2025. For right at $20, I got a huge burger and enough fries to satiate 2-3 people. I cannot fathom what the larger burger sizes look like, much less who could possibly be ordering them. The fries were everything I could have asked for -- crispy, salty, and with a very generous amount of both cheddar sauce and bacon (the perfect amount to have sauce on every bite but not be soggy). The burger was good, and definitely satisfied that primal craving for salt and fat that we all carry with us from hunter-gatherer days gone by. However, I wouldn't say it was particularly spicy, nor did its flavor deviate significantly from any generic burger I could order. Don't get me wrong, it was still delicious, but I was a little disappointed. I think that the fried jalapeño coins are breaded a little on the thicker side, which somewhat mutes the spice and slight acidity that they would otherwise add to this dish, to help cut through and brighten the other flavors. All in all, I had a great meal and would totally come back, but I don't think I've tried the "perfect" burger from here yet. Definitely going to recommend this to anyone in the area.

I ordered the Daddy's Philly with a side of pesto pasta salad and banana pudding. The Phily was really good. It came loaded with cheese, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, jalapeños and Garlic mayo on a soft bun that wasn't soggy or stale. I was a little surprised because, despite the jalapeños, I didn't find it spicy at all. I love garlic but I think I would prefer regular mayo to the garlic mayo. Compared to other cheesesteaks I've had, I'd give it a 7.5/10. Instead of fries, I chose the pesto pasta salad. The pasta itself had the perfect chewy texture, and I honestly wanted to keep eating it. Unfortunately, it was too salty for my palate. I could only manage a couple of bites, which was disappointing because the texture was amazing.....like how do you get your pasta to that texture, spill the beans! Haha For dessert, I tried the banana pudding. It was good, but it wasn't my favorite style. I personally prefer banana pudding that's light, fluffy, and silky. This one was much thicker and heavier than what I grew up eating, so it just wasn't my preference. Overall, I enjoyed the meal, especially the Daddy's Philly. Of course, everyone's tastes are different, so these are simply my personal preferences. I'd still encourage you to give it a try and decide for yourself. Ciao for now!

I'm so glad I did check my bag before I left because they did not give me ranch or plasticware, man I would have missed out on some amazing ranch. The young man gave me three ranches which I'm so disappointed I only grabbed one. Unfortunately I didn't get the best pictures but the food tasted great. The fries were thick cut (probably frozen) and let me tell you, I would just come back for the ranch! They have my favorite restaurant ranch.
