We found Hops Burgers while on a roadtrip. It had a great menu for a quick pitstop on our way home and the prices seemed very reasonable. Dodging a huge rainstorm we decided to sit at the bar and the staff was very friendly and attentive. We sampled a beer or two before deciding on a couple suds and the poutine appetizer while we decided on the main event. The place was fairly busy and they do have a decent outdoor patio also. It's a chill, hole in the wall, neighborhood watering hole type of place. We chatted with a few locals and my wife and I enjoyed the atmosphere. They had some great beers on tap including several from Foothills brewery and also full liquor bar to send a few rounds for any occasion. I settled on the Mad Haddock (I know who orders the fish at a burger place) and my lady had French onion burger. The deep fried asparagus was a playful side that was memorable. We both really enjoyed the choices. The fries could've been more crisp but overall they were passable. The haddock sandwich was incredible and that tartar sauce was incredible. The sandwich was one of those that you don't put down after a few bites. I enjoyed the food, friendly service and conversation with locals. They recommended a bottle shop connected to a laundromat not far away but we had to get back on the road. We found Hops Burger Bar while making a stop off the highway, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. It's a great little restaurant with a fun atmosphere and great music. We started with the Fried Goat Cheese Balls and the Fried Cauliflower, and both were excellent. The goat cheese balls were crispy on the outside and creamy inside, while the cauliflower was perfectly fried and packed with flavor. I ordered the Jalapeño Popper Burger special, and it was phenomenal. Juicy, cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of heat and all the flavors you'd expect from a great jalapeño popper. Easily one of the better specialty burgers I've had. They also have a great beer and wine selection, which made it easy to find the perfect pairing with our meal. If you're traveling and looking for something far better than the usual fast food off the interstate, Hops Burger Bar is absolutely worth the quick detour. Finally got back to Hops. This experience was underwhelming. I tried to eat here the night before but was too crowded. Since I was driving back by on my home the next day, had a late lunch. I went to the bathroom and when I came back, someone decided to sit in the seat right next to me. Why?! I must comment on the service. The barkeep got me a menu quick and I ordered a water. During my meal, my water sat empty for 5 minutes or so even thought I counted 8 staff members behind the bar. Given the time of day, it was not busy. I ordered onion rings (as a side) and the Bacon Jam burger as it came with the "cordon Bleu" fries. The onion rings stole the show. So good. The fries were not my jam. Low quality cheese sauce with lunch meat ham that was diced. My fault, I should have subbed regular fries as I don't like stuff on my fries. I was expecting it to be a seasoning. My mistake. The burger was good not great. I got the 12 oz size and learned it is 2 fat 6 oz. patties stacked. Makes it VERY tall. The description of this burger is shown in one of my photos. This is a beautiful place. I've got an old-fashioned vibe, but a modern taphouse flair. Our waitress was very sweet, generous, and kind. She said that she was new, but she did an awesome job. I got the North Carolina hamburger, and I thought it was delicious. I wanted to try different beers, and our waitress was very patient with me even though I ended up not drinking any. Had a burger craving and Hops made my day! I ordered a medium, 6oz hops burger as is, with a side of fries. This was on a Saturday evening and the restaurant had a couple folks waiting to be seated when I arrived. Within 5 minutes or so, I was happily seated at the bar. Which appeared to have the most available seats. I ordered their dragonfruit mocktail, which turned out to be very sweet, so may request more ginger beer next time. Otherwise, it was a nice beverage while I waited for my order. The bar staff offered suggestions for the menu and I even caught a glimpse of their burger special, posted at the bar. This changes regularly, so be sure to keep an eye out if you're feeling adventurous. I landed on the hops burger and fries. The order was made fresh with the tomato, lettuce bacon and onions! Each bite filled my burger craving. The cheese was melted nicely with just enough of the condiments, that didn't overshadow the perfect medium cook on the burger. I used to frequent this place when they first opened. It was such a fun vibe and I loved their patio. I visited today and have to say that while the food was delicious I took away a star because I was a little disappointed by a few things. We sat on the patio and waited and waited to be served. It was not until I got up and headed to the door when a server saw us and walked out to take our order. I am also a little saddened by the cover and ceiling on the patio. This is my favorite Hops location of the two. I love that it's darker and more "bar" like than the other location. Their burgers are also always out of this world. I'm stuck on the French onion burger and the spicy goat but the burger patty itself is always cooked perfectly, seasoned to perfection, and is soft like butter. The toppings are just an added bonus. When I told friends that we ate here (or they saw my pictures on social media), I learned several had already been and had nothing but good things to say. My wife found this place on Yelp. At the time of writing this review, Hops has an average rating of 4.5 stars with 1.7k reviews. 1.7k Yelp reviews is a lot for any business, especially one in the Triad. There are two Hops locations. This review is for the original on Spring Garden St, near the Greensboro Coliseum and UNCG. It opened in 2013. A second location opened in 2016 on Lawndale Dr (Battleground Ave). Parking lots around the restaurant were full or reserved for other restaurants (Scrambled, Bites and Pints). Even street parking down Howard St was full. There was plenty of free street parking south around the corner on Hiatt St, though. That's where we parked. We showed up with a party of seven right around 1pm. We waited 10-15 minutes for a table inside. We could've been seated immediately outside on the covered patio, but it was too hot. This is a casual, local joint that's not terribly big. We had three generations with us. There was something on the menu for everyone from grandpa and grandma down to the grandkids. Everyone in our group got a burger, but me. I got the blackboard special: Fish & Chips. My wife and I shared. I also had some of her North Carolinian burger, which my mom also got. Here's what I tried: * Fish & Chips sandwich ($15) - beer-battered haddock filet topped with arugula, Tabasco-spiked red onions, and tomato and lemon-caper remoulade on a toasted hoagie roll; served with a side of seasoned chips and malt vinegar dip * North Carolinian burger (6 oz $14) - a "farm-fresh" fried egg, applewood bacon, pimento cheese, fried green tomato, and lettuce Different from a lot of other burger joints, Hops offers burgers in multiple sizes, (6 oz, 8 oz, and 12 oz), temperatures, and even different bun options (e.g., brioche, whole wheat Kaiser roll, pretzel roll). Some/most places only offer one size and one temperature (well done). You can also create your own custom burger if you want. Hops' burgers are made with hand-pressed Angus chuck beef blends. The North Carolinian burger was fresh, tasty, and satisfying. It was stacked high and almost too big to eat with my hands. One friend commented that Hops burgers are so big, they need a fork and knife. That's how I ate my Fish & Chips sandwich. It was ginormous. My wife was able to hand it with her hands, though. For me, it got too messy. Along with sides (e.g, fries, chips, onion rings), my sandwich and all the burgers were served with a pickled peperoncino toothpicked on top. The burgers also came with a pickle spear. I don't remember if my Fish & Chips sandwich came with one. Imagine eating fish and chips, but in a giant sub sandwich form. That's what Hops' Fish & Chips was like. No tartar sauce either, but that's okay - the remoulade and malt vinegar dip were enough. The sandwich and burgers were very filling. One friend told me to try The Spicy Goat burger ($13.75-$16.75). It comes with goat cheese, applewood bacon, sweet and spicy pepper jelly, and lettuce. Another friend told me to try the beer. The place is named Hops after all. She said that's what she goes to Hops for. I noticed they had a lot on draft. Maybe next time. Our server was polite and efficient. Service was slow, not only for us, but the tables of people who arrived after us too. I think the restaurant was backed up and/or short-staffed at the time of our visit. We went on Saturday afternoon between lunch and dinner hoping we wouldn't have to wait too long. Good move we only had to wait about 10 minutes before being seated. They were busy even for this time of day. It was rather noisy, but not over bearing. Our server was very pleasant, despite being busy. Does the food match the hype? Absolutely. This place was jam packed, but luckily opportunity struck and we waited about 5 minutes. We shared a Diablo and North Carolinian Burger along with some wedges and onion rings. We had the burgers cooked to a perfect medium since the patties are a little thick. The buns and veggies were nice and fresh and the burger came with a pickle spear. Great flavor all around with good execution and speed despite how busy it was. The wedges were crispy with a good bite and my only piece of feedback is that the batter on the onion was too thin. They were crispy for sure, but the batter disintegrated off the onion rings as soon as you touched them. The brews they have on tap rotate and when reading the board I wish they wrote down what kind of beer it was and the ABV so that I didn't have to look each one up myself. The staff is always willing to help and is always friendly. The food is made fresh. You can order one of the standard specials, they have a special of the day or you can make your own. They have a lot of spirits to choose from. Their appetizers and desserts are chefs kiss. My go-to is a grilled chicken with no bun. I add bbq sauce, applewood bacon and my choice of cheese. We've been here before but during our wait we noticed how disgusting the floors were. Food and debris everywhere. They weren't that busy so an extra 30 seconds would t have hurt to sweep it up. You'll probably have to use street parking because there are a total of 5 spots for the entire business. Friendly staff. This location is much older and not in the best shape. I went for the first time with my co workers and got the veggie platter which was delicious. At the same time I saw everyone's plate and I knew I had to go back and try their burgers. So glad I did. It had so much flavor. They ask what temperature you want the burger cooked, which lets me know they truly know what they doing. Yesterday I tried for the very first time the PB& J Burger. I got out of my traditional Burger comfort zone and gave it a try. It was incredible! Every plate that was brought out for customers was the PB& J Burger. I was told that there is a gentleman that comes every single day for the PB&J Burger when it is the feature of the week. The ambiance is lively and the servers are awesome. Maria, Seth, Phebe, et al go out of their way to make you feel welcome and provide consistent excellent service. When I first heard they were closing Spring Garden Pizzeria for a burger joint, I was ready to go ten toes down and protest in the streets. "What?! No more BEST slice and pitcher deal this side of the Piedmont?! Fetch me my pitchfork and/or torch." Then I tried the Spicy Goat, and my foodie life changed forever. (See also: Wall of Fries.) Basically, I'm down to clown with everything on the menu--I would literally take a bath in the roasted shallot vinaigrette that makes every other salad dressing on the planet irrelevant. Everything is fresh and cooked to perfection, including the oftentimes-ridiculous (beef stroganoff burger?! you MANIACS), always-delicious (it's still savory meat gravy on more meat) burger-of-the-day specials. Plenty of perfectly pulled ales and masterwork mixed drinks available to accompany your main menu selects. For the volume that both stores (Lawndale/Spring Garden) see, it's wild to me how impeccably professional, nice, and fast the crews are. Nobody ever seems visibly stressed or short, just courteous and adept. Even if it's an hour wait for a table (just eat at the bar your rubes!), the service and food are expedient and expertly MTO. So, if you want to eat craft burgers at a joint that sets craft burger standards instead of just copying a trend, look no further. Happy to eat at Hops Burger Bar while in Greensboro, we miss the Winston-Salem location. This location is a smaller and cozier feel, although both locations have/had tables fairly close together. I ordered my favorite burger, the Spicy Goat (sweet/spicy pepper jelly with goat cheese, bacon and lettuce) with sweet potato fries. The burger was cooked medium, as requested, and the melange of flavors was great. The sweet potato fries were nice and crispy and tasted like they were dusted with cinnamon sugar. A glass of Prayers of the Sinners red blend was a nice accompaniment. Our server was pleasant and helpful. Left full and happy. read more

A burger and beer bar is firmly outside the realm of the sort of eatery I'd seek out, especially while on vacation, but when in the South, do as they do and eat some fried food. This was one of the highest rated restaurants in Greensboro, and it was one of the only places open late after our late night flight landed, so I was happy to settle in for a burger feast instead of skipping dinner altogether, which would have made me way too hangxious to be around. I was pleasantly surprised to see a crab burger on the menu, called the Crabby Patty, which was crisped to perfection and made with real crab meat. I got mine with a side of veggies to balance it out but was relieved my partner ordered his burger with onion rings-- they were fantastic. While the menu heavily features burgers, they have many other protein options, including turkey, bison, ahi tuna, grilled chicken, and two different veggie options-- nutty patty and mushroom cauliflower. There's really something for everybody. The fried green tomatoes were bangin, and served with some kind of cream sauce, maybe ranch? A true southern specialty I wish I had the option to eat more often in NY. The beer selection would make any libationist happy, but I opted for a glass of wine. My partner teased me for this choice but I just wanted something lighter than a beer after such a heavy meal. got a warm friendly greeting walking in so I decided to stick around despite the absence of fresh brewed coffee. took a seat at the bar and got a tall glass of iced water as I tried to figure out lunch... Joe noticed my befuddlement and suggested the day's feature: the Greater Antilles Burger and rings - toppings include jerk sauce and grilled pineapple so it's probably going to be a gawdawful mess regardless. so I finished up my ICF review in the time it took for my food to arrive. I was pleasantly surprised by the pile of food that came out: a small cagey basket overflowing with large oniony onion rings crowding a burger piled high with all that stuff listed on the specials board AND a pepperoncini on top plus ring sauce and a pickle spear. OH MY!! while indulging in one of the pineapple rings I took a minute to figure out how to approach this and settled on going halfsies and working out from the middle alternating burger and ring bites which worked out pretty well and slowed down the pace enough that I took half of my meal home... plus four onion rings from the guy sitting next to me and I managed to not soil my shirt for a change!! it's a smallish place in the middle of town. parking is tight but manageable. compact dining room with a full sized full service bar and covered patio for those so inclined. staff is well mannered and social and quite taken with the idea of an ice creamery just up the road... read more
