I've seen some bad reviews on the fries from people that clearly don't understand the difference between a fresh cut potato into fry form and fast food and grocery store frozen lab modified ingredient French fries that are designed to be stiff and crunchy to survive the apocalypse. Fries are fresh cut and awesome, especially since they are cooked with beef tallow! next, "SPAM FRIES!?" served in a topless Spam can with parchment paper and garnished with fresh Dill and a dipping sauce that was like a remoulade or horseradish hinted cream sauce- OFF THE CHAIN! Our large party gobbled them up, they are a must try. They have a Huge menu of Bourbons, with some specialty drinks. My daughter got a Coke and it came to her in a cold can with the entire lid removed?! pretty cool and different. Burger selections were unique like an Olive burger for example. Buns were light fluffy and topped with toasted sesame seeds, similar to a potato roll or Hawaiian roll. The actual burger meat was smaller then I expected so Id recommend getting a double on any burger you order. Atmosphere was a combo of retro and modern. When I first walked into Cooks burger bar it screamed straight nostalgia. A literal trip in a Time Machine back to grandma and grandpa's basement with the smell of burgers sizzling away on the flat top. Give the farmers fries and Reuben a go, they won't disappoint. The burger patties are thin and appear to be premade. My single patty burger cost 13 dollars. The sweet tea I ordered cost 5 dollars and it was a bottled (Pure Leaf brand), which I was not expecting. First off, get the Farmers Fries!! They were so delicious that I want to only talk about them, but the burgers where definitely good too. Hubby ordered the Bacon Burger which he loved, but he felt that it could have used more pepper bacon. I had The Litttle Lamb burger which had great flavor, a nice amount of goat cheese, and a tasty demi glace served on the side for dipping that made up for the fact that the lamb burger patty itself was overcooked from what I ordered. They use a "pink/ no pink" cooking temp system but missed the mark on this one just a tad. A crunchy, house-made pickle spear on the side completed the burger plate. Overall the burgers were fresh and tasty, and you can really tell that they put a lot of thought into their burger flavor profiles! Now, back to the Farmer Fries... Handcut, crispy, savory, garlicky, and plenty! They hit all the right taste buds and the fresh herbs and cheese took them over the top. The decor was cute with a 70-80's vibe - including a patio out front for outside dining - and all the staff was friendly and helpful with suggestions. We didn't inbibe, but they have plentiful beer and cocktail selections. Came on a quiet late afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. The menu is simple, but sufficiently varied, with a focus on, well, burgers, but also has a variety of drinks, shakes, sides, apps, etc. The burgers are tasty without being fussy. I got the muffelatta burger and it was really tasty and had the right level of grease. Nicholas, our server, was a stand out with a genuinely positive attitude and either a real pride in the establishment or an amazing ability to fake it. Highly recommended and glad to have visited to cap off our day. When we sat down the service was very nice. The man working the bar was very attentive and the food was delicious. Went here for lunch last week. Very busy place, steady stream of customers. Atmosphere felt good, my burger was good. What I didn't like was the loud music (making conversation hard), the fact that not once were we offered a drink refill, the burger came with no sides (not even chips), and they actually charged me for mayonnaise on my burger (and of course, they charged for the slice of tomato and slice of cheese). Decent burgers, decent fries, decent service, blah blah blah. Yeah the food is okay and a fair price but I left completely unsure of what my experience was supposed to feel like. You walk in and it's a retro 80s vibe with video games and classic bar signage. The booths evoke a slightly older feel, maybe 60s, which is what they feel like, and that's not a great thing, my back was literally in pain from sitting in the booth, no lower back support at all, just a big gap behind your lower back, but I digress. Where I was really lost was the music, basically they just played Dirty Heads and similar music the whole time, lots of repetitive quasi-reggae beats....over and over. I'm not sure if being high is part of visiting, but the music would make more sense if that were the case. Anywho... the music was an odd choice but it wasn't really a big deal because the volume wasn't too high. We were able to carry on a conversation without much trouble. The service was... well unremarkable, not bad, but not out of this world. Honestly our server seemed a little bothered by us at times, even though we didn't really need anything out of the ordinary. We saw another server who appeared much more cheery, but to be honest I never like to judge a place on one experience with one server, I have no idea what they went through today so i try to show some grace. As for the food again, it was good, for the price it was about what I would expect. People have complained about the fries but I liked the fries and thought the portion size that came with the burger was generous. We love Cook's Burger Bar. I feel like i'm walking into a 1980's version of a 50's diner. The food is farm to table. The servers are fun. So far our favorite menu item is the patty melt and the Ruben, then again the mushroom Swiss burger is amazing too. Fries are natural, I think the pickles are even homemade. The burger was average at best, a 5 on the 10 scale. The fries were small end pieces no longer than 1.5 inches in length. Just about any fast burger chain would be a better option. The reuben was served overly wet with too much dressing making the sandwich very messy to eat. Overall the sandwich was a 6 on a 10 scale. Staff and atmosphere were fine. I'm updating our review to 4 stars solely based on the owner's pm's he sent to us. I want to preface this with he never asked us to change our rating and we haven't had the chance to try their food - yet. The owner did, however, acknowledge the mistakes that his staff made, offered to comp our meals if we'd be open to coming back when we're in the area, and apologized for our less than satisfactory experience. He was open to hearing our side of things, stressed that he appreciated our conversation, and seemed sincere in wanting us to give his place another chance - on him. So for that, I give him credit and adjusted my rating. I hope to have the opportunity to visit again and try his food as my 11 year old son's favorite meal is a bacon cheeseburger & fries. Thank you, Andrew, for being the type of owner who appreciates constructive criticism in the face of uncomfortability. You'll go a long way in this industry! 1 STAR: We got there and they were flooded... They said to add our phone number into the system and it would be a 15 minute wait. Then they seated 4 tables and most of them probably weren't even in the reserve system. We had to walk into the place ourselves and remind them that we have been in the system for at least half an hour waiting. The food and service were wonderful during our family lunch last Saturday! My husband and I were impressed by the super crispy fries and excellent, juicy burgers. The retro decor was fun and inviting. My kids also approved of the homemade chicken nuggets and "snack plate" that gave them nibbles of burger patty, cheese, fries, cucumbers and apples. The snack plate is so genius because that's how toddlers like to eat! I wish every restaurant had something like that on their kids' menu. Recently moved to Williamsburg from Central Florida. I was very excited to try Cooks burger bar as there is not much of a "food scene" here. General Review: Great concept but needs work. First negative, no fountain drinks and you have to get up from your table to go get your own water. If you're a full service restaurant, please bring me a glass of water. Second, the floors were so slick from all the grease. Food was "okay" but not something I would come back for in the near future. Prices were reasonable. And the ambiance is great. read more

The food was good and fresh. We had the smoked wings with cherry wine glaze, the mushroom and Swiss burger, and we got a snack plate for my daughter. Best kids meal ever! It came with a burger patty, apple slices, apple sauce, cucumbers, fries and sliced cheese. Literally all her faves and healthy compared to most. The service was decent, though I had to ask for a couple things more than once. She was working the bar as well tbf. The waitress couldn't tell me what was in the salad so I ordered roasted veggies thinking it couldn't go wrong but it did. The roasted veggies was not bad and consisted of zucchini, squash and tomatoes but it had some type of seed I think as seasoning, which turned me off. Anyway it was only $5 so I was not too upset, just always prefer some type of veg with every meal. The place is small but cozy and everyone seemed pretty friendly. The very best ambiance - like stepping into a 1970's midwestern bar but with better lighting, friendlier folks, and outstanding casual dining. I've tried nearly everything on the menu and find it hard to select a favorite. I can't stop thinking about the olive burger though. Now - I love olives, but this isn't OVERLY olive-esque. It has that perfect tang of something slightly different and unexpected and is a terrific flavor profile with the Swiss cheese. Their draft cocktails are strong and delicious and I love the simplicity of bar drinks they offer. One of my favorite things to do is have a drink at the bar while munching on one of their $5 bar snacks. The service is consistently accommodating, thoughtful, and familiar.
