QUICKIE REVIEW A car lovers type of restaurant without a doubt. Be sure to try the free ice cream in the back next to the bathroom (I know it sounds sketch but it is good). FOOD This is what I tried: -Garage Burger First thing to catch my eye about the burgers here is that they seem to run a little bigger than expected. Burger itself was pretty good. Someone recommended that I add sour cream to kick it up a notch and it did. As for the fries, they did not taste as fresh as I would have like it to be. Lucky for me, I was full of the burger and did not need the fries. PARKING Cooks has an entire lot. You can easily park 100 cars and still have space. SERVICE Waitresses were nice, no issues here. PRICE $9 for burger, it's about right. Not breaking the bank here. TIP/OTHER THOUGHTS They have free soft serve ice cream as you go towards the bathroom. Lubbock has been dying for a place like this! We walked in and were instantly pumped. It is a huge area with lots of garage paraphenalia (memorabilia? One of those words). It is a little out of the way from the city center, but it is a cool place. We started out with the queso, which was great. The salsa was painfully hot. I had one bite and nope'd out of that situation. I ordered the salad, everyone else ordered the patty melt. All of us enjoyed our food. Your personal rating would have to depend on your motivation for attending Cook's Garage, This garage is many things and indeed has many things. I came solely for the food, and had that been the only stimulant, I would be ashamed to credit this establishment with more than 3 stars, because the food is about as exciting as any little sad Applebee's still on it's last leg. Now, that being said, I could see myself returning, and here's why: First a serious collector has put together a massive sign collection that is primarily petroleum oriented, but not limited to oil and gas. The signs hang from the ceiling, blanket the walls and stud the vast parking lot. If you've ever seen the History Channel's AMERICAN PICKERS, then you know these artifacts are serious money, and not easy to find. Second, it is a pleasant place to just hang. There are high ceilings, cozy corners, pool tables, and even a huge event space that a has an unexpected and refreshing cross breeze though the large garage style doors. Finally, there's music. Nothing sadder than an empty stage, but while dining at noon on a Saturday, lo and behold, there was a talented guitar duo putting a unique spin on some old hits. The pair really put the man-cave atmosphere over the top. I'm from outta town, so I can't say I'll be at Cooks all the time, but when I am in Lubbock, it'd be hard to argue against it. read more

Food was absolutely horrendous, both under and overcooked, the staff were slow and inattentive, and it seems most everyone who works there (however, primarily the owners) are deeply, DEEPLY racist. I have had countless Hispanic, African American, and even LGBT friends experience discrimination here by way of offering a separate menu, refusing to seat for long periods of time, and straight up slurs being thrown around. I've heard from many there was previously a racist sign hung on one of the walls. I assumed it to be an outdated, insulting caricature or something similar. Nope! It was a straight up slur, which I won't repeat here. This place needs to be closed down, or at the very least inspected by the state for food safety violations. Do better. read more

I attended the Cody Johnson concert, by far the worst concert, venue had a cool atmosphere but the organization was total trash! Walked over a mile to get in, stood in line nearly an hour and a half and paid $30 for a 6 pack of hot ass beer! They are not at all staffed or equipped for any large concerts! read more

Apparently they have started overselling their events. This used to be a great place to watch a concert. Now the wait times for everything are ridiculous. 45 minutes in line to exit the highway, just to pay $20-$40 to park across the street in a field. Then another 45mins waiting in line to get into the venue. The place the concerts were held in the past was on the far side of the main portion of signs with plenty of room and spread out. Now that portion is used for additional parking for more guests. Once inside it was so crowded you could barely walk around. We had a group of 7, and 6 of us wanted to leave immediately upon entering, despite having already paid for the show. The lines for any drinks were very long as well. Our group got in line and were still about 30 people back after an hour of waiting. We finally got frustrated and went to another location where we could get service. We basically paid $35 to wait in line for 2.5 hours and missed most of the concert. Very disappointing and we will not be going back. read more

Pulled in the parking lot & was a teensy bit intimidated by the humongous yet almost completely filled lot. Starting from the vintage signs in the lot to the absolute dreams of remodeled 50's cars & lovely neon signs, the dream went into absolute fruition at this country oasis. We were seated immediately & food was received quickly & I must say the cheeseburger & queso were quite delicious & I mean that sincerely! They had a very good cover band which enlivened facing & plentiful room for such. I should not expect it but, wine list was red or white essentially. We ordered 2 appetizers. The "cheese sticks" which aren't sticks, they are cheese bite things and the "barb wire", which I believe in common English should be "barbed wire"? Who cares. Both were good with the jalapeño ranch. The ranch is the highlight of this joint, not watered down and it's perfect with the apps. Kudos. That earns you one star itself. As for my main entree I ordered for the first, and last, time their chicken fried steak. Huge mistake. I don't think it was an accident either. I am pretty sure this is what they serve to everyone and they should be ashamed. People that enjoy it should be ashamed. Anyone that gives it more than one star should be ashamed. Fatty, chewy, under-tenderized, blandly flavored, doused in packet gravy. That's the best I can say about it. Also, my side salad was CRUSHED into a metal bowl that apparently had 30 other salads stuffed on top of it. They actually served it to me crushed into a bowl! What? Did they not see it? Did they not care? Strike 1. Moving on. While my meal sucked so bad I didn't even finish it. My brother in law had the "crispy melt". He was disappointed and not impressed. He won't order it again and I doubt I'll convince him to come back. Strike 2. My wife and sister in law both ordered the sausage sandwich. At last, a gleam of redemption for Cook's garage food! Soooo...we went to Cook's for Lunch today, the Hubster & I & now I'm gonna share some thoughts (settles Judgy McJudgerson Hat on head)... We got there & got settled thinking, Cool! Not too busy for lunch! Yay! Place quickly filled up, so you've been warned! The decor is cool AF & the Hubster definitely approved. If you've got a guy/friend/whatever that likes cars & such, bring them here. Server got us drinks, put up with my too-many-questions about the Queso & helped me make my life-decision of the day. We went basic & got chips with regular queso (comes with salsa, too) & when I say regular, I mean, you could like, add green chiles or taco meat or both...options. We really liked the stuff & kinda wished we had been less than basic, but I could see hanging out, listening to music, having beers & eating chips & queso some time in the future. It was good! The Hubster got a burger - Texas toast done in a toaster & a FEW onion strings with crinkle cut fries...it was edible. I know this because I ended up eating half of it for him. I got tacos. Go to Cooks, have a good time with friends, but don't order the tacos. Trust your fat foodie friend here, Folks...don't do it. Server indulged me & let me order one of each (4 kinds) so I could try them all. How much did I hate them? Let me count the ways... Corn tortillas - not deep fried (which I usually appreciate) COLD. Cold & dry and just...ugh. I really couldn't tell which taco was chopped brisket & which was pulled pork & it doesn't matter. BOTH tasted the same: Like someone marinated them in lighter fluid & then rolled them in charcoal. I don't know how else to describe what happened there. An hour later & I still can't get the weird flavor outta my mouth. I passed the Cook's Taco Meat version to the Hubster - he ate that - & I ate the "Sriracha" Shrimp one. It was whatever, too. They were just...awful. I was sad. Heads up: tacos come with chips & salsa on the side, so there's that. I don't usually do this, but I let the server know what I thought, who let the manager know, who let the owner know...and I HATE doing that. I ain't trying to get a freebie...EVER. But that's what I got. They comped my plate & that was cool. I'm sorry I didn't like them at all, not even a little bit. A very unusual venue. Easy to access from Highway. Drive into a huge parking lot covered with old service station company signs. Wow! The venue looks like an old automotive repair garage. Inside you are over whelmed with many old neon signs from alcohol companies, food advertising & beer & alcohol signage. It's like a museum. Wonderful menu with appetizers, burgers, fish, bbq, & steaks. The onion straws & sweet potato fries were to die for! Great beer & bar selection. Service was outstanding. Large rooms for dining plus banquet facilities for large groups & screened in porch for concert venue. Wonderful place all around. We highly recommend it! We will be back. read more

I love the signs. 100's of old gas station signs. It may not be everyone's things but I love the nostalgic atmosphere inside and out. The food is typical bar food and it's pretty good. Four stars for the awesome atmosphere and beer, oil company and old signs everywhere. Great gathering place for the car show with enthusiasts proudly showing their antique cars this weekend. The restaurant is a huge open space with different types of tables and waitresses and bussers speedily waiting and cleaning tables. The food was mediocre I'd say, but the burger had some sort of spice to it that was too spicy for me. Others will probably love it. Has mushrooms, bacon and cheese of your choice. The sweet potato fries were terrible. Thin and dried out so you couldn't really taste them. Stick with the regular fries. Great beer selection. We also waited OVER an hour for 3 people meals and when asked what was taking so long she responded "all orders have been taking an hour to come out" However when we said we were just gonna pay for our appetizer our food magically came up. I was a huge fan of cooks garage, loved every second of their concerts. The atmosphere was amazing and they had a great setup.... Until they started the advanced pit tickets. They now charge and extra $85 just to stand about 20 yards closer to the stage. It used to be a $40 charge for tickets and the standing positioning was first come first serve. Now people who just pay more can show up late and still stand in the very front, in front of the working, blue collar man who slaved extremely hard for his $40 general admission ticket and got there 4 hours early. Cooks garage has betrayed their base audience for the affluent, rich, upper class, who aren't even true fans of Real Red Dirt music. God Bless Texas, God help Cooks Garage. read more

The rest of my table had a similar experience with the taste and temperature of their food. The menu had lots of options and I was content with the time it took to bring out the food.
