Relaxing, cool, quiet and comfortable. The food is good, the prices better than fair. This is a great place to nurse your hangover, or get away from your noisy office/hotel. The Corner Bakery Cafe fit the bill when I was looking for a medium priced low effort place to get breakfast on a Houston layover. The menu includes lots of options from breakfast to dinner and has loads of baked goods. Bagels, cakes, cookies and a ton of baked goods. Also on the menu were a tempting selection of grilled and toasted sandwiches, fresh salads, soups and pasta. Being in the breakfast mood, I ordered the Farmers Scramble sub the hash browns for fruit and pancakes for toast. I added a medium coffee with free self service refills and the total with taxes came in under $12. I should qualify also the they do provide delivery but only for catering orders. All in all a good place to get some quality fare and not spend a lot of money. read more

I placed an order online to save time. When I placed my order I would think they would have the order accurate. Well I was proven wrong. I ordered pasta and a salad. I came to find out when I got home that my entire order was missing items. My pasta was missing the bacon. Come to think about it how do you forget to put bacon on the meal. We also ordered a salad. The salad was missing various items. They even forgot to put dressing on my bag. I have eaten at Corner Bakery before in Chicago and it was a great experience. Update: The food is good, their service is bad. The last three times I have been there, none of the employees cared and it showed (in food preparation and how welcome I felt). They made me feel like I am inconveniencing them by ordering something, that they, GASP, then have to bring to my table. How dare I? Maybe one of the hiring criteria there is that you have to have attitude towards customers? The only person who seems to care is the manager (would be bad if she doesn't). I've eaten lunch here many times as it's across the street from my office. Parking lot can be a little hectic during peak hours. Lines usually move pretty fast and wait time for food isn't unreasonable. I've had several pastas and soups (my favorite is the baked potato) and all have been good. Sometimes I feel like it waited on the counter a little longer than it should have but all in all pretty good. The cookies are super good and worth the $. I like this place. The atmosphere is nice, cozy, bright, and calm. All types of people frequent this location, various ages, ethnicities, cultures, etc. The sandwiches are very tasty. I came here one morning after getting to work an hour early. I got their Anaheim Panini after looking around and nothing else seemed appetizing. I was not very impressed because the Panini came out very bland and I had to eat it with ketchup. The price for the portion = Not OK. I mean, c'mon. I know Corner Bakery Cafe isn't a huge chain like Panera Bread or La Madeleine, but seriously!? Make your food worth the price, if not by the portion than by the taste. Slightly disappointed. My boyfriend ordered the half sandwich and a cup of soup, and the sandwich was nothing. He literally ate it in two bites. I ordered the Mom's Chicken Noodle Soup in a bread bowl... half my soup was on the plate the bread bowl was on. I wasn't exactly too excited about it. All that was literally left in my bread bowl was the chicken noodle part. Overall, the soup was eh. I've had better chicken noodle soup. It tasted almost canned-like. On the plus side, the service was really quick and the truffle mocha coffee was warm and yummy in my tummy. I enjoyed that a whole lot more than my soup, as it did no justice whatsoever. I keep trying Corner Bakery and I never really enjoy it. It seems like the kind of place I would like but it always misses the mark. Putting that aside, this particular location turned me off to this restaurant all together. So I go in, order 2 of the same sandwich and he tells they are out of the particular bread that sandwich comes on. Now, I'm a reasonable person, I understand things run out and that's all fine and good (less wasting food, right?) BUT, he was just so unapologetic and unwilling to make a suggestion of something similar or making the sandwich on different bread, or something, anything! No customer service at all. I would have walked out if I wasn't with 4 other people. This particular day happened to be Mother's Day and unbeknownst to me they were having a "moms eat free" special. I go in, with my child, order $50 worth of food and not wanted to make a fuss (after I'm already bummed about my sandwich) I ask him if I can take advantage of the special, he says of course. I pay for the food then look at the receipt thinking 50 bucks is a lot for a few sandwiches if mine was free. I inquire and he says one of the kids meals was free, annoyed I leave it alone. Look at the receipt some more and see that a $4 cup of soup was actually the only thing comped. I did not go in expecting free food, don't mind paying for my own food either, but if they're going to advertise it then either do it right or don't do it at all. I realize these are both totally minor things, but in an area with so many great restaurant options you'd think they'd try a bit harder to earn people's business. read more

Wait is this new, I don't remember this...mental note "must check it out!" I went in on a weekend afternoon and on a Sunday morning. Sorry I forgot to yelp it the first time! During the afternoon hours it doesn't seem to be too busy, nice and quiet where you can enjoy your food and company of a friend or friends and catch up on life. Sunday morning was a different story! The tables were filled and people were up having breakfast with friends and family and it was just bustling with conversations. Enough of the people...let's talk food! The first time around I ordered the Santa Fe Ranch salad and it satisfied my salad craving. It had just the right amount of dressing and was tart and crunchy. I also had the chicken tortilla soup which wasn't the best tortilla soup I've had. It was more brothy rather than filled with chunks of veggies and chicken, but it was something hot and that day was gloomy and chilly so it hit the spot as far as temperature goes. The second time I visited the place it was breakfast so I ordered the Honey Banana Crunch Oatmeal. Talk about getting your days worth of fiber in...the serving size is quite big, so you better love oatmeal! The oatmeal is thick and hearty and will fill you up for a good 3 hours. The toppings are a good contrast to the oatmeal, adding crunch and sweetness making for a perfect way to start the day. The coffee on the other hand isn't something to rant and rave about but hey can't start the day without the morning coffee. If I did that who knows what might happen!?! We have gone to Corner Bakery for a quick dinner before an Aeros game. The food was pretty good. The staff was really nice. They even came out with a fruit salad for my kids when they realized that the kids would not eat the grilled cheese sandwich (kids generally don't like pannini) I thought that was a nice touch. So, after having a really good dinner experience, I thought...why not try out the breakfast. The menu had a few tasty sounding choices. When we came for breakfast, I got the house specialty scramble dish. Although the hash brown (country style) potatoes were pretty good, the egg dish was microwaved. When you microwave an egg it eggs this weird shiny glaze on it and bubbles around the edges. It doesn't really taste bad, but it is freaky-deaky. If they would cook the eggs on the stove I would give them 4 stars. The store is clean and well designed with a variety of seating choices. The menu is pretty decent for a chain restaurant. This is my second visit where I didn't even get to order. The restaurant was at a busy medium, several people walking around. Cooks cooking, food sitting and ready to be delivered. I enter and stand at the front and wait. No greeting, no instructions, no pleasantries. I kept waiting, had time to read the menu and knew what I wanted and continued to wait. I walked out when the phone rang and someone answered it instead of greeting the person (me) that had been standing and waiting for service. This is the second time this happened. My salad is great as usual however I had the miss fortune of having a young lady named Jennifer to prepare my dessert to go. I chose a slice of lemon pound cake. I should've chose one of the baby bundts or one of the cookies where she would not had the challenge of cutting a customers order. This place is okay. I agree with the poster who said it fulfills their coffee shop needs quite well. There's free wifi, free refills on soft drinks/tea/coffee, it's relatively quiet in there most of the time and there's ample seating and parking. This is a stark contrast to most of the coffee shops I've frequented in the Houston area, which, while fun, usually have very little parking, no free refills on basic coffee and soft drinks, very little seating, and are pretty loud. That said, I like their pretzel bread, and their French Toast wasn't too bad either. Overall, though, even though I worked nearby, I hardly ever went there for lunch. read more

This is another one of my go to places for lunch during work. Although I have only been here a couple times, I do enjoy the food. I like to go the soup and sandwich combo. It's quite filling and isn't extremely costly. I've had the baked potato soup and the italian wedding soup. Both were tasty. I've also had the poblano chicken sandwich which was really good and the turkey frisco which was also delicious! When I got the half turkey frisco and cup of italian wedding soup it had a total of 500 calories. Not bad for a cheesy hearty sandwich and hot soup. read more

I've been to Corner Bakery Cafe a few times recently, and I think it is a nice addition to the Upper Kirby area. The biggest draw of Corner Bakery for me is the free wifi. The people at Corner Bakery are definitely welcoming to people looking for a space to study. The only downside is that there are very few power outlets in the restaurant. Other than that, they have an awesome patio if you want to study/eat outside, and the inside of the cafe is usually relatively quite, perfect for studying. I've never had trouble finding a table to work at either! It's an awesome, secret study spot. I haven't tried many items off the menu, but so far I've enjoyed the coffee and the cookies. J and John for starters are the best. J is so hospitable for a cafe. Everyone that walks in the door is a treasured guest to him that he greets and warmly chats with. He's been especially helpful when I've ordered an off menu item the last few times I've come in. Some of the newer staff may not be familiar with it and tho it may not be his part of the job he packs it personally and makes sure my order is correct. I usually get the banana oatmeal (which I'm not usually a big fan of oatmeal, but here its great!), the hazelnut flavored coffee, and a pastry to go.The food, coffee, and customer service here is amazing!! read more

I live & work nearby so I go here often and I'm consistently given excellent servie by all employees. Once, my order was taking a little longer than expected so the cashier kindly offered me a free soda. Another time I inquired as to what a specific pastry item tasted like, and the lady behind the counter gave me a free full-sized sample (it was coming close to closing time and she said they'd have to discard them anyway at the end of the day). And a third time, I placed a small catering order and confirmed the delivery time. I arrived on time to pick it up, and it wasn't quite ready yet. What did they do? Made me almost double my original order for the minor inconvenience of having to wait 20 or so minutes. That's good customer service! read more

This has been my favorite restaurant since February when I first came in and Mr James was extremely helpful and honest with me. He's made it his business to remember me and my diet every visit.
