Ate Sunday morning breakfast before hitting the road for a six-hour drive. I ordered a three-egg omelet with crisp bacon, grits and biscuit and gravy while my wife got eggs over medium with chunk potatoes, link sausage and biscuit and gravy. Service was quick and friendly ... server took our order in short fashion and our food came out quickly, despite a mostly full restaurant. The food was great and there was plenty of it. I could have sworn there were at least five eggs in my omelet and my crisp bacon was perfect. My wife's eggs were cooked perfectly and she loved her food. FINALLY, we got a decent order of biscuit and gravy! Unlike the water-like gravy at a local chain, this gravy was perfect and the biscuit was a true cats head like Granny used to make and was textured like a real biscuit and not a cake. So when I arrived, I already had a low expectation. It was exceeded by a long chalk. Yeah, it's country home cooking but so what is wrong with that? I had the French Toast with added sliced bananas. The bread was nice and soft, well cooked and the bananas were a perfect accompaniment. My friends chose the Eggs Florentine and the cheese omelet. All were excellent. Earlier this week I had crab cakes atop a split homemade biscuit covered lightly with hollandaise, with tender sautéed asparagus on top! The flavors were amazing and the presentation beautiful! The chili was good and we ordered chicken tenders and onion rings to share. First one, there was a pink (raw) spot in one of the tenders. They offered a $1.99 credit bc it was only one tender . To offer insult to injury, the tenders and onion rings had NO taste. Not just that they needed sale but literally no seasoning or flavor. We were at our hotel down the street when we started looking for somewhere to go for dinner. After taking a look at reviews and the distance from the hotel, we decided to give this place a try since the weather wasn't so nice and didn't want to go too far. Our first visit was for dinner on August 1, 2018, but visited again on August 2, 2018. Cornerstone Restaurant is located along Tunnel Rd. It's at the corner of Tunnel Rd. and the exit ramp onto I-240 West. The place is visible from the road. You can park in the front lot or the back lot of the business, but there is ample parking available, but some spots at the bottom of the hills pool with water pretty quickly with rainfall. When we came in, the place wasn't too busy, but we were doing an early dinner, as it was before 4 pm when we came in. Seating was immediate and our server, Jen M., was at the table very quickly as well. After getting our drink orders, she asked if we had any questions about the menu and if ready to order. We weren't ready just yet since it was a nice size menu. When she came back, we weren't ready for the food order yet, but did order the Carolina Bacon Pimento Cheese appetizer. This item came out pretty quick and was actually quite good; so good in fact that we ordered one to go at the end of this visit due to knowing the bad weather coming the following day. After the appetizer came out, we were finally ready and I ordered the Stuffed Shrimp entree with homemade chips and macaroni and cheese. My mom had the Fettuccine entree with their Vegetable Soup. The Stuffed Shrimp were great. Living near the coast, I was able to tell that the crab meat wasn't filled with fillers in it. It was primarily crab meat, as one should expect. The homemade chips and macaroni and cheese were great as well. My mom said the Fettuccine was great as well, and she took the rest back to the hotel to have the following day. This was a great dinner experience, which ended up us coming back here a few more times before leaving the area. With the good experience the prior night, and the rainy morning, the decision was made that we wanted something more than the hotel buffet, so we came back for breakfast. Service was just as good as the prior night. For breakfast, I went with their Brioche French Toast Extraordinaire. The extraordinaire portion adds bacon and eggs to the french toast. My mom went with the Farm Scrambles. This breakfast was excellent. Everything came out hot and fresh. The food and service were great once again. Later that same day, it was time for dinner. The weather was still quite wet, and since this place is close to the hotel, the food has been great, and we wanted to try other items on the menu anyways, we came back a second time for dinner. Once again, we were immediately seated and our server was at the table within a few seconds of us being seated. We skipped an appetizer this time since we had the other appetizer from the night before as the lunch snack that afternoon. For this dinner visit, I went with the Chicken Santa Fe entree with homemade chips and macaroni and cheese as the sides. My mom got the Chopped Steak entree with mashed potatoes and tossed salad with homemade Greek sauce as her sides. Once again, the entrees came out nice and hot. They were very delicious and filling. The seasoning on the chicken and chipotle cream sauce were good as well. The avocado slices were good and a nice touch to the entree as well. Overall, this place was excellent. If I am in this area again in the future, this will definitely be one of the places I'd come back to. In fact, on the day we were leaving, if we had more time, we would've stopped here for breakfast that final morning as well. The lamb gyro platter had a fresh salad that was excellent! The rib-eye steak was amazing and no A-1 sauce because it was so tasty without and grilled asparagus was perfect. Service was good and no reservations either night but we were seated quite timely with minimal wait. Most delicious was the Key Lime Pie dessert!! We got sat right away, and the restaurant itself is very nice, it was recently remodeled and it has nice big tables, spaced out well, big windows with lots of light coming in. Our waitress was fantastic. (Kristin, maybe? I'm REALLY bad w/remembering names) she was very friendly and energetic and answered questions about the menu. We ordered a Carnivore Farm Scramble with Home Fries (me) and a Ham and Cheese (jack cheese and feta) Omelet with Cheese Grits. No bread because of Celiac Decease. The food was good. (Mine was better). Everything had kind of a burnt/oily taste, making us think that they need to have the cooks clean the stove top better in between orders. Everything also had a seasoning on it, which had an oniony taste to it. My Recap: Not bad prices, extremely friendly service from our waitress, very nice inside seating, very clean, food was mediocre at best, not really impressed. My only complaint is the incredibly dour and UNPLEASANT young woman at the hostess station. Her affect is so flat as to be rude. Never a smile. Absolutely no eye contact. Just a sullen young woman with an air of total indifference to anyone entering the restaurant. If it happened once or twice I would not waste my energy, but her inability to interact with paying customers is glaring and constant. I have never received a greeting of any kind when entering The Cornerstone by this girl. I resent being led to a table, have menus dropped without so much as a single word, smile or acknowledgement of our presence. She is rude and dismissive. I hope someone speaks to her . We LOVE this spot. We were in town visiting and exploring for the first time. This little gem was down the street from our hotel. We ended up going here twice for breakfast and just loved it. The decor is beautiful! Lots of natural wood, two fireplaces, clean, modern, with an open kitchen! The first time I had the fried chicken benedict & it was out of this world! I could only eat half, but it was beyond delicious. The seasoning on the chicken was perfect, it was super MOIST (p.s. - hate that word), and the chipolte cream drizzle enhanced the whole dish. The biscuit and poached egg was done to perfection. I'm glad this place is not local to me, otherwise I would gain 500 lbs! My husband had a western omelette with breakfast potatoes that he thoroughly enjoyed as well. They use a seasoning on the potatoes that we really like. Not spicy - just good seasoning. The second time, I got a make your own omelette. The eggs were fluffy, and the fillings were fresh & plentiful. I see that they offer fresh squeezed orange juice in house as well, but we didn't try it. Maybe next time! In addition, the service was friendly & they were so kind to our little toddler.
