I went to Costera Cocina Tulum for brunch with friends and really enjoyed it. It really is designed to look like a restaurant in Tulum. It's very cute! For starters we shared the guacamole. It was very fresh and a little bit spicy. For my entree I had the Mole Poblano Enchiladas. I love mole and poblanos so I was very excited for this dish and it didn't disappoint. The mole was very rich and the chicken was very seasoned. We also had the Piña Colada French Toast for the table. I am normally not a French toast fan because it's too sweet for me but this was really good. The pineapple and coconut flavors went really well together. To drink I had the Sandía Fuego which was essentially a spicy watermelon margarita. It was very fresh wine just a hint of spice. I really enjoyed everything that I had. read more

This is becoming one of my new favorite restaurants to visit when I'm in the West Loop! I came here over the weekend for brunch to celebrate my birthday with friends and it was fabulous! The moment you enter the restaurant you feel like you are on vacation. The staff is super friendly and the food and drinks are top tier. The chips and guacamole are a great choice if you are looking for something to share. We tried the steak tacos, pancakes, and steak and eggs. All super delicious choices. One of the cocktails called Day party at bagatelle is so good! It's a sweet drink but if you like frozen drinks it's a good option. It is made with guava, coconut and lemon. Walked into the restaurant a few minutes before our scheduled reservation at 9pm on a Saturday. We were greeted with friendly faces and sat quickly. We were provided water and given time to look at the menu. The ambiance of the place was just right. Music was playing, but you could still have a conversation. We started with drinks. A frozen Day Party (sweet) and a Shadows in the Jungle (old fashion). Both came with a cute little show. Then our dinner came out nice and hot. I was between the Straka and fish tacos, and with the help of our server Branden, I went with the fish. It was a good combo of the vinegar and with a splash of lime added on top great. The Carne Asada was cooked perfectly, and the sided were good as well. This could definitely be a great dinner to start off a night. They even had shot planes going around to tables. My friend wanted to come here to celebrate her birthday. Ambience is very nice. Very dark, gives you a lounge club type of vibe and festive music to chair dance to. Our waiter was nice very attentive despite the larger party and gave us what we requested when we needed it. We had the Queso Fondido it had chorizo in it which made delightful and it was very good. I ordered Short rib and to drink I had a regular classy margarita. The short rib was very good. It was tender but needed a little seasoning but had a lot of sauce on it. Visited on a Sunday early afternoon. We didn't realize they were serving brunch - and the brunch menu is very limited. It would be nice to see at 2:45pm the availability to order more actual meal items or have an expanded brunch menu (not everyone likes pancakes and French toast). I can see how to ambiance of this place at night would be great, like being in Tulum. We will come back and give it another try I had the chicken tacos - 4/5stars - there was a decent amount of meat, but way too many diced tomatoes. The tomatoes overpowered the chicken and sauces. My spouse didn't like any of the available brunch options, so only on item was ordered. Also, this may be because we sat in the bar and had to give a credit card to keep the tab open, but when I asked to close the check out, I didn't receive an itemized receipt. $49 for one order of chicken tacos, one beer and one cocktail seems high. Came here on a Saturday night and I gotta say the vibes were lit! The inside is definitely tulum energy and is very nice. There are plenty of tables and everyone looks to be enjoying themselves. Seeing the plane with sparklers full of shots being brought to tables was fun. The reason why I'm giving this restaurant a three star rating is because the food could be better. It is quite expensive for what you get and I was not blown away by the flavors. Waiter seemed knowledgeable about gluten free options and guided me towards the ceviche or tuna tartare on the menu. He let me know there may be cross contamination (which is fine as I am only intolerant, not sure what they would have offered for a customer with celiac!) When I received the ceviche I could tell after a few bites the fried halved tortillas served with it were wheat flour. The chips we received with the guacamole appetizer seemed to be white corn, so I ate my ceviche with those instead. My partner agreed they tasted like wheat tortillas as well. My partner asked the waiter if he was sure the tortillas were gluten free and he assured us they were"tasted different because they were deep fried." Having been gluten free for over 15 years, I know exactly what corn tortillas taste like in every form! Costera Cocina Tulum is a solid addition to the Fulton Market scene. It is a place that has good food coupled with a gorgeous vibe. They spared no expense in making you feel like you have been transported to Tulum, even if it's cold and wintery outside. I would probably say this restaurant is best for large groups, as the dishes are on the expensive side, so if you want to try multiple dishes, a big group can ease that financial impact. Regardless, it's still fun. For appetizers, we had guacamole, queso fundido, and tuna tartare. All were solid options, and more than plentiful for a party of 2. For dinner, I had the Carne Asada. The steak was tender and flavorful. The potatoes were a bit lackluster and didn't have much flavor. The enchilada/quesadilla is not anything to write home about, but isn't bad either. I had only one cocktail (Adios Amor)and felt I chose wisely with it because it was perfectly balanced between sweet and sour. I personally am not a fan of sweet cocktails, so this was perfect for me. I really wanted to love this restaurant because it is beautifully decorated, in the perfect area, and fun ambiance. However, the food was not great at all and in fact made everyone sick later that night. It also took over 30 min past our reservation to get seated. Good thing the cocktails were tasty while we waited! We immediately ordered some appetizers, including the guacamole, queso with chorizo, and salsa trio. These were tasty and easy to share with our big group, but the short rib quesadillas we ordered were tiny and difficult to split. For our entrees, the carne asada and ceasar salad were both big portions. However the salad was absolutely drenched in dressing. The sides in the carne asada dish were interesting in flavor (sweet and also overly salty at the same time). I wouldn't order either of these again if I do come back. Wonderful new opening in Fulton market! I stopped by the day after opening not expecting much since the first few weeks of opening a new place are always rocky but man was I wrong! The service here was great, the portions were more than enough and the ambiance was awesome. As other people have said the place is very loud but I think the club/restaurant vibe is what they are going for so they certainly are nailing it. The service is also very good and they even take allergies into consideration which I found very helpful. Got to check this place out opening week and was not disappointed. Right when you walk in you feel like you're transported to Tulum which is especially nice when it's frigid out and you need an escape. All the plants, the dim lighting and the music make for an especially cozy vibe. We had reservations and showed up a little early but were still able to get seated right away. We went for restaurant week brunch and it was great. Three courses for $25 and plus they had a InKind app special $50 off a purchase of $150+ so we ordered a few extra food and drink items so we could meet the minimum for the deal. Everything was delicious and it was so much food. Hats off to Gabe for such great service. Extra Items ordered: - Costera guacamole: This had pieces of queso and a giant prawn, and came with variety basket of chips. At $28 it was on the pricier side compared to the regular quac at $16. - Langosta tacos: Three tacos with lobster and elote corn. Also pricier at $29 but had a lot of filling. Restaurant week menu: - Short rib quesadilla: This didn't look like a traditional quesadilla, but more like an empanada. It was good but I coudn't taste much short rib, and perhaps had a bit too much lettuce. - Avacado toast: Good but on the smaller side. This was $15 on the menu but I wonder if I got a smaller portion because of the RW menu. - Mole poblano enchiladas: If you like mole this is for you. Nice amount of heat in the sauce. - Breakfast burrito: This was a giant burrito well stuffed with egg and chorizo, and was nicely accompanied by a salad. The chorizo was a bit dry but the sauces it came with made up for it. - Coconut rice pudding and tangerine flan for dessert: We got these to go since we were so full. Both were delicious, although the flan portion was tiny. Drinks: - Summer Love, micheladas and spicy watermelon margarita: The drinks were good, but nothing overly special. I liked their mix for the michelada, I tasted a bit of cucumber in there which was a nice twist. Point deduction for the less than friendly hostess stand. Our reservation was at 2pm and we got there at 120 pm and they couldn't seat us until closer to our reservation time, so no problem we'll go to the bar and get a drink. I went back to the hostess at 145 and she said she still couldn't seat us. She literally told me I couldn't get seated until my exact reservation time and not a minute sooner (I asked if I could come back in 5 or 10 min), even though I saw a few open two-tops sitting empty the whole time we were waiting. I went back at 158 and she still seemed annoyed by me wanting to be seated, so maybe I should have waited the extra two minutes. Why you wouldn't want to seat people with reservations and turn tables over more quickly is beyond me. read more

Hello Yelpers. Its I know its been a while, but I needed a few days to write this because I didn't want to write a review out of emotion. I first am surprised from looking at this restaurant on yelp that it only has 4 stars. I actually expected more space for an extra star because in my opinion 5 wouldn't have been enough. I need to apologize off top because I didn't do my research on this place as long as I've known about it, nor did I bother to press and get the name of this Chef who has dawned us with their presence. When searching the restaurants website their is no mention of the Chef, but i believe she was the one who was approving every dish before it left the kitchen. No worries yelpers i'll dig in. This place is date night, friends dinner night, and maybe even a proposal night. That is just how flexible the ambiance is in this establishment. Now I cannot speak on anyone else's experience, but Valentine, who was the Maitre' d that attended our table is now in my new top five column for the topic in the city of Chicago. I am not a frequent dinner of fulton market because it just recently became what it is now. The restaurants that are there were not there when I first came around, and we all know as a foodie you can't hover around a particular area and wait for it to blossom, because you'll miss out on the ones becoming potential or have reached full grown status. This is Chicago! In the restaurant industry here you have to come with it or pack up and go home literally. Sorry again didn't mean to go off topic but I needed to give a little backstory. This place is one of the best so far to do it when it comes to multilayer flavors that all combine into one. The orders for my table were the seafood Tostada, the what I believe was a play on a chicken torta, but I could be wrong, but it was crazy delicious, the tostada was very good as well, and the pork shanks. These all were very, very delicious. I just couldn't get enough of the chimichurri potatoes! OMG!!! Listen to me! Order what you want im sure it all tastes good. Wait. They have tacos on the menu, and im sure the Chef has their own take on tacos, but im from Chicago. Im only eating tacos from International on 46th and Ashland, almost anywhere in Little Village, and a few places in Pilsen. Costera Cocina is good. This restaurant is definitely Appetite Approved. Simply put, for "management" to act as if they are a bouncer at a club with a strict dress code, and the attitude you might imagine that comes with that, is not managerial behavior, nor that of the restaurant industry. Mind you, there were at most 10 other customers in the restaurant, and our party of 6 was treated as such. Additionally our table had dirty silverware, and not recently used 'dirty', the food was dried on there leading me to believe cleanliness could be an issue here. This whole place is such a vibe! I felt like we got transported to Tulum, Mexico! It's super trendy with lots of greenery and hype music and lots of people inside. Even with all of the people, I felt like it was easy to talk to the people you're with. We came here during restaurant week and it was definitely busier than usual. You have the option to either go A La Carte or do the restaurant week menu (and if one person decides to do this menu, then you're whole party has to as well, which makes sense). So now on to the good part, the food! For the first course we ordered the guac and short rib quesadilla. The guac was absolutely delicious! The chips were also thin which is how I prefer them. The quesadillas we weren't impressed by. Honestly they even looked like empanadas. Second course we got 2 tacos each. TWO REGULAR sized tacos!!! The portion sizes were huge. Truth be told, we started getting full around this course. Third course we got the cavatelli with street corn which was absolutely amazing!! It tasted like elote with pasta in it! It was every carb lovers dream. We also got the short rib which was equally delicious (and pro tip, tastes delicious mixed in with the pasta). Fourth course which is the best course, desserts! We got the flan and coconut rice and you honestly can't go wrong with either option! Extremely disappointed treated like a criminal instead of a customer. I made a reservation at this restaurant for June 6th to celebrate my 40th birthday. Naturally, I was excited and decided to stop by early to check out the ambiance while I was in the area. To my shock, I was completely ignored when I walked in no greeting, no acknowledgement, nothing. It was as if I was invisible. I stepped back out and tried again, only to find the front door locked. An employee saw me and gestured for me to wait. Moments later, a tall, slim man came to the door, peeked his head out, and treated me with a look of complete disdain when I told him I had a reservation and just wanted to preview the space. I've never felt so disrespected or unwelcome in an establishment. The whole interaction made me feel like I was being profiled as if I was some sort of threat instead of a customer planning to spend money and celebrate a milestone moment. Needless to say, I canceled my reservation. I would not recommend this place to anyone, and I will be sharing this experience with my 10.5k TikTok followers.
