Came here last Saturday after a long trip through CT back to RI. The prices are very reasonable and the menu is expansive, covering everything from cakes and chowder to burgers and pasta dinners. There is a sizable lot in the front of the shack, with covered picnic table seating on each side. *Noteworthy* There isn't a traditional restroom here, just a port-a-john- but it is clean! with wipes! and hand sanitizer! I ordered the clamcakes and red chowder, and my friends got the fish and chips and white chowder. My cakes were small and fresh, not super chock full of clams but definitely enough. My chowder was the star of the meal, whole clams were definitely floating in there. I contemplated taking a quart home with me, but I resisted. My friend raved about the white chowder in the same way, and my friend loved the fish and chips (especially since they were so inexpensive!). I also wanted to mention how sweet the staff working here was to us. As we were finishing our meals outside, a young boy approached us with a tray of red sox ice cream sports bars! Totally free! Someone once said this is the "best" chowder they ever had, even better than iggys. I was like okay I will try it and be the judge since I LOVE clam chowder and clam cakes. That person lied to me , and I will never trust that person ever again. Not sure how their taste buds work. The place is literally out in no where land. If I didn't live in the area or wasn't around the area I would never have even knew it was here. But they did have a cute set up, nice little tables and area to eat minus the bugs. The lady who helped me wasn't very friendly at all hence the tip jar had nothing at all in it. But I still tipped , because that's how I am. Now I ordered chowder ( white ) and clam cakes. I opened the container and was confused to why it had garlic looking things on top of my chowder but I tried it anyways. I absolutely didn't like it at all. We came here for lunch on a lovely afternoon. I had the regular size fish-and-chips. The fish was so fresh and tasted wonderful. I really enjoyed that. The fries were good as well and they served it with Cole slaw which was OK. My friend had clam cakes and chowder and the clam cakes were probably the best I've ever had. They were light in the center, crispy on the outside and you could tell that they were freshly made with just the right amount of clams in them. The chowder to my taste was a little funny. It wasnt bad but had a seasoning that I couldn't identify and that I didn't really care for. My partner loved it and very much enjoyed it. It was nice to sit outside on a nice day on the picnic tables and enjoy a nice lunch. I would like to see new table cloths on the tables because then they would look cleaner. read more

Took nearly 15 mins for 3 clam cakes and a bowl of white chowder & then the employee at the window forgot my soda and nearly forgot the ice cream. Got in the car and there was no utensils or napkins. Had to go back to the window/counter & he handed me a spoon and 3 napkins.. Staff is definitely NOT friendly- almost to the point of rude. Chowder was a bit watery but still decent and the clam cakes were amazing! I wish we had gotten more then 3 My son had vanilla ice cream and enjoyed it. The prices are a bit high- for a clam shack. This place is also in the middle of nowhere but close to my house so I'd definitely pop back in for the clam cakes! Great food! The chowder and clam cakes were absolutely delicious! The chowder had wonderful flavor with plenty of clams. The same goes for the clam cakes. We came back the next day to take some chowder & cakes home to NH with us and had 4 wieners all the way. Not as good but okay. We will be back again! Service was great also. I'm very skeptical that someone would claim that this is the best seafood "anywhere". I'm not suggesting that they are a shill for this establishment, or that their mental faculties are in question, I'm just saying such a bold claim should be taken with a heaping grain of salt. Anyway ... I stopped by Howard's Chowder Shack and ordered the red chowder - clam cake combo. Here are a few brief thoughts. The Chowder: I can't say that I was a fan of the (barely) lukewarm clam chowder I received. The broth flavor was something more akin to a canned Minestrone soup. I found it overly acidic, and too tomato-y tasting. Certainly more so than a typical red clam chowder. Also, I'd have probably appreciated actual chunks of clams in the chowder. A scant few, rice sized particles of shredded clam matter made it feel (again) like I received canned soup. The Clam Cakes: Hot, and crispy. Decent flavor. Again, not loaded with clams, but a passable amount were detected. Bottom line: If you happen to be in North Scituate, or don't feel like taking the trek to Narragansett, or Point Judith for a better experience, the clam cakes at Howard's will do in a pinch. read more

What a shame! This has been a favorite place of ours for years, and it's been even better since it became Howard's. But tonight it was awful. First, the credit card machine wouldn't take any of the new credit cards that have a chip in them - the counter clerk said it's been charging people twice (she didn't offer to enter the card number manually). It was a cool night so we took our food home where we realized they shorted us one drink. The fish and chips and the fish sandwich had almost no fish at all (we actually first thought maybe there was supposed to be another container for just the fish since we couldn't find it in the container - but then found the scant amount of fish that probably weighed less than an ounce). It was abundantly clear that the manhattan clam chowder hadn't been cooked; the tomatoes were acidic and there were probably two pieces of clams. The crab-cakes were average - nothing to go out of your way for. We called to complain and they did offer to give us the "right" amount of fish if we drove back (no explanation of why they didn't give us what we paid for in the first place other than the Owner left for vacation the day before.) And they wouldn't credit us for the missing drink or the dinners without fish. We all have bad nights now and then - but there were so many things wrong that I won't be going back and warn those who do to check your order carefully while you're there. read more

Read many reviews and decided to just try it. Firs, the weather was prefect so decided to eat outside at a picnic table. The young lady taking my order was helpful and even recommended a lesser price option as she was concerned i was " ordering a lot of food." She was correct! Had the white chowder with the clam cake combo. Chowder was excellent, clam cakes were cooked perfectly but very light on the clams. That was the only short coming I found. Fried clam belly sandwich was excellent, not greasy and quite large. I ate probably 8 clams before I could even pick it up. Place is a great value for the food served!! read more

The chowder was thick and also filled with clams. I talked with the owner and he has some great ideas for next year. He is into catering and I am glad the shack is back. Great food and prices.. We went on a Saturday night around 6 and there was no line. We ordered an array of food f+c,stuffie, white chowder and hot wieners- all was great- the sauce for the wieners could ha e been alittle better but nothing horrible. The chowder was delicious as well. F+C cooked perfectly with I think beer batter. We also got the frozen lemonade that we read was great in other reviews and it excellent alittle more tart then dells. We ordered all this and it came to under $25!! Any other dairy stand around would have been 30$ or more.. It's quiet location no long lines and nice seating that is covered if it does rain.. It's that same sad story...you find a restaurant that you love and look forward to going to week after week. Then, one particular evening, you have the worst meal and you realize something is different. Something has changed. That happened tonight when uninterested counter staff served us not only lousy food, but incredibly small portions of lousy food! Our friend's fish and chips and fish sandwiches had comically small amounts of fish. When I opened the fish and chips while sorting out what was what, I thought that they had put the french fries in a separate styrofoam container for some reason. The piece of fish was a three inch long piece of the tail end of the fillet. when I said "what is this? Where's the fish?", my husband said "It's under the fries." It wasn't! The Manhattan chowder had the distinct acid and watery flavor of tomatoes that were not fully cooked. The New England chowder was watery and almost entirely broth. My crab cake sandwich was a crab pancake sandwich, but it was by far the best of any meal we received. That is not a compliment. So what happened? My friend called them to complain. He was told that the manager was on vacation and that they had new chefs. If he wanted to come back they would give him "the right amount of fish." Did they knowingly give him the wrong amount?! I suspect that they were busy and were running out of fish so they gave ludicrously small portions to stretch it out. They were out of lobster when we got there, so perhaps this is what was happening with the fish. It was $43, for this fiasco. I am not one to turn away from a place due to one bad experience, but this was really inexcusable. No reasonable chef would even think of serving what we received. I know alot of people seem to be knocking this place but I have lived near it my whole life and have been a regular since I can remember and have always loved the food. Since it changed to howards (instead of chowder shack) we have been plenty of times the meals are always delicious and good serving sizes. I'm sure restaurants have bad days but I haven't had a bad experience yet! Plus there isn't too many places with good seafood that arent along the coast lines. read more

Uncommon for a roadside stand. Fish was fresh and served piping hot. The chowder was the best I've had in a long time. My wife had the lobster roll and it was amazing. We happened upon this place quite by accident on our way home. We will definitely come back on our next trip out this way. I would make the trip here just to eat. read more
