I recommend sitting at the counter, because the entertainment is watching the short order cook who was amazing. She never stopped and wasn't too particular about measurements, but all the food came out quickly and looking great. I stopped in for breakfast, got the Hoosier and coffee. The coffee was actually pretty good, and within a couple minutes my food was sliding towards me on the counter. The plate I ordered was eggs with sausage sitting on a pile of hash browns smothered in gravy. This can go badly but that's where the cook comes in. The potatoes were hot and crispy, even under the load, and everything else was cooked perfectly. The only outcast would be the gravy which was good, but fairly neutral, having very little flavor. Probably better for the masses, so as not be offensive, still I prefer mine with more flavor. This is not 5 star dining, so just the 4, but excellent for a diner. Very clean, fast, and tasty. Like others said, cash only which might have been a bigger deal if I brought in the family for dinner. Am only giving one star because Yelp requires it. I was in last week and asked to make a substitution of my side option on a meal. The employee offered to ask and when she asked the supervisor on duty it was a flat no. There was no option of an up charge nor an explanation of any substitution policy. I then asked the employee if I could talk to the supervisor. She let her know and the supervisor proceeded to ignore me for at least five min from only a few feet away. We'd been out all night, had sobered up, and wanted some food. We have a long history with Courtesy Diner being our favorite place to go after a night out. It's been our standby for nearly a decade. One friend who went with me even got her engagement pictures taken there, because she and her now-husband used to love going there after a night out, too. We walk in last night and all of the tables are full. We're the only ones waiting. A table gets up, pays, leaves. Naturally, we go have a seat at the open table and wait for someone to clear it. That's when shit got real. As the three of us are sitting there, this female cook comes storming over and immediately starts yelling at us. "You don't listen do you?? I said NOT TO SIT THERE UNTIL SOMEONE CLEARED IT OFF." What in the actual FUCK. We try to tell her that, no, she didn't say that to us. We didn't even see her when we walked in, nor did any of us speak with her. We just did what we ALWAYS do -- find an open table, sit down, and wait. When we very politely (and frightfully) tell her she's mistaken, she starts to yell more and informs us that she will NOT be cooking for us and we can get the hell out. Yes, folks. The long-standing question of "what does one have to do to get kicked out of a shithole like Courtesy Diner?" has finally been answered. You have to do nothing. You have to walk in, sit down, and a methed-out cook on bath salts will come over out of fucking nowhere, physically slam her fist down on your table, cuss you out, and demand you get out. She walks away. We sit there baffled for a good five minutes, wondering if we're on an episode of Punk'd or if it was just a misunderstanding. We still want our god damned hash browns, so we sit for a few more minutes thinking it will blow over. Every waitress cold shouldered us. They wouldn't even LOOK at our table. Finally, I get one's attention and very politely ask what the hell just happened. The waitress informs us that the cook told the staff not to wait on us because we called her a bitch. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK PART 2. No one. NO ONE at our table even uttered the word "bitch". Had we actually believed what was happening, maybe we would have. But we were in such total shock by her initial outburst that we didn't say much of ANYTHING. So to recap: 3 fairly sober adults walk into a diner they've been going to for years, sit down, get terrorized by Captain Bath Salts, sit there for a few more minutes, then say "fuck it" and go to Steak n Shake. So, the menu isn't that exciting. Cheese sauce and its plebian cousin, American cheese, make prolific appearances. But, what they do well are slingers (a St. Louis original consisting of eggs, cheese, onions, optional chili and hash browns all atop a hamburger patty). Can't say that I've had this potential coronary in recent years, but their standard cheeseburger will also do you just fine. And, they have crinkle fries! There's just something about that added texture. By far, the best part about spending an hour at the Courtesy Diner is the scenery. Ah, what a vibrant picture of local shenanigans swearing, laughing and trying hard to keep from falling asleep in their selected pile o' grease. I dig this place, because it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not; Courtesy Diner serves cheap diner-quality breakfast, plain and simple. Just walk in, pick a booth, and order one of the first two things of the menu and a coffee. Get anything more complicated than that and you're wasting your time and money! I tried the steak and eggs once. The dish was decent, but didn't provide any satisfaction or utility above and beyond hash browns, scrambled eggs, and eggs or sausage. All tabs here are going to be $10.00 or less, which is pretty sweet in today's era of the overpriced and pretentious brunch. You'll get all types in here, including some that have clearly been out all night long. If you want the real adventure, hit the original location, which is on Kingshighway. I used to live a few blocks from here and I would frequent this place, well...quite frequently. Now I stop in to get a burger and fries to go, as they have some of the best greasy burgers in town. Yeah, I know, you can get a great one at The Kitchen Sink or O'Connel's or somewhere else, but not this quick and not this cheap while maintaining the goodness. The staff is always friendly and who knows why. Some of the patrons are not the easiest to put up with and rarely is it not busy. My hats off to them, for sure! The downfall, in my opinion, is not accepting credit or debit. They do offer an ATM, but the cost is $1.95. Why not increase the prices by 3-5%, no one would even notice. The convenience is worth it. Who carries cash any more? Especially on a Saturday or Sunday morning after being out all night and now you just need some food to soak it all up. My cash is used for tipping, parking, etc. I don't want to have to worry about it. Ok, this is a diner, so expect to get diner food. However, for me, it's one of the best in town. Parking can be limited during peak times, but all in all a great place. Oh, one last thing. They don't take "to go" orders over the phone. I guess they've been burned too often by people not showing up. I always get my food quick, but I would rather just stop, get it and go. No big deal though. read more

When Yelp gives the two-star suggestion of "Meh. I've experienced better" it pretty much nails it. I will start by saying I haven't had a slinger, which everyone raves about. I went for brunch, and the whole experience was just nothing special. The breakfast was normal and bland, just the standard toast and eggs offering you get everywhere else. A friend got chicken strips and fries; they looked like bagged crinkle fries and I'm pretty sure they have the same chicken strip supplier as Steak 'n Shake. I've had a more satisfying breakfast at IHOP. The place was packed at brunch time and we were able to secure a booth, but the server did not speak or do more than to write our order down, bring it to the table, and leave the check. I know it's busy but there are like 10 tables in the place, tops. It's really a shame because the place has that cute diner feel and great location to work with, but with all the wonderful breakfast options in the world I definitely won't be rushing back. read more

A meal at the Courtesy Diner is a St. Louis tradition in itself. with 2 main locations one on Kingshighway and this location on Hampton. I choose this one over the other location just for the cleanliness factor. I have eaten many times here over the years, and still haven't had a problem yet. the decor is perfect for a diner atmosphere, with its checkerboard tile, and red booths and chairs. there is even a jukebox in the corner for you to play some songs while you eat in true diner fashion.. The menu is small and it is basically your typical diner menu with burgers, sandwiches, breakfast items and their version of the slinger called the Devil's Delight. they are open 24 hours, and the late night bar crowd makes for some enjoyable entertainment over the weekends. heads up though, if your looking for some late night munching, be prepared to wait they do get packed on the weekends. basically, to wrap things up, if your in the mood for a quick tasty lunch/dinner/breakfast then they courtesy is a destination for you. if your looking for incredible wait service, or a 5 star experience don't come here... read more

I have mentioned in other posts how much I love breakfast and Courtesy Diner did not disappoint! The place is right off Hampton, close to highway 40 and right across the street from the salvation arm. I went with my family and we all ordered our own thing, my parents both got omelets, my brother got French Toast and I got the pancakes with hash browns and sausage links. It was absolutely delicious. I had more than enough food and everything was great. My brother even remarked that it was the best French Toast he's ever had. The set-up of the diner is perfect, it resembles everything you can think of with the classic breakfast diners from the bar seating and checkered floor to the booths and juke box. Greatest of all it was very well priced! I have been there twice now and will definitely be going again. read more

My friend got the French toast, which is EXACTLY what she was craving for and she gobbled it up in a flash, along with the bacon. Me? My own dish was the chili cheese with the onions and... OOHHH MAMA, with the fries that the steak sandwich came with? I finished that up in a jiffy. What we got was a bitch waitress (looks like Pensatucky from 'Orange is the New Black' with blonde hair and a nose ring), who wouldn't let us order cuz there was no seats and we couldn't get it to go. Courtesy Diner offers great greasy food that's perfect with a belly full of beer (or your preferred intoxicating beverage). I've been known to hit it up after the bars have closed to satisfy my late night grease craving. And inevitably, other people have the same idea. It's a typical diner - with breakfast and lunch options. I tend to stick with breakfast foods for my late night dining - but that's just me. Their hash browns are great. Well, I've been to this place 3 (4?) times so far. The first time, the bf was insanely drunk and wanted a peanut butter milkshake. They don't have peanut butter milkshakes. He asked for a chocolate one because the waitress said they only had some flavors and due to his drunken state, he forgot he didn't have to order. -_-; I got some fries and I think there was a slinger involved... but it was about 2 am. The fries were ok -- crinkly type, not thin type and I really liked the bite or two of slinger I had. The chocolate shake was only ok. My bf kept on taking a sip, making a face, setting it aside, forgetting about it, and taking another sip. I Another time, I went for dinner. I got a slinger and it was delicious. I really like how they make the eggs how you want. :) I also tried something with chicken fried steak and gravy. THAT was heaven. I love fatty salty delicious things and it really hit the spot. I come here at least once a year during LouFest. The food is great, the service is quick, and it never breaks the bank. If I lived in St. Louis I am sure this would be a place that would be on regular rotation. I prefer breakfast here, but the burgers are also delicious. Particularly after a long day walking around Forest Park! Every time I've been there is a wait, but the service is super quick. You can also do an order for take-out and it will be ready in a jiff. I had the "Western Burger" with hash browns. Both were good but not great. Hash browns were crispy but a little too greasy. The burger was tasty but was definitely fast food quality. The bacon on my burger was crispy and delicious. My friend had a breakfast plate which was fairly standard and filling. Service was friendly and very quick. As far as diner food goes this is up there. It's very reasonably priced, the food is tasty, and the staff is friendly. However there is one thing I come here for, and one thing only... Their slingers. For those of you who don't know what a slinger is I'll just say it is a heart attack waiting to happen. But it is a delicious heart attack waiting to happen and if you aren't too worried about the occasional calorie splurge I would highly recommend it. It consist of hash browns, topped with a hamburger patty, two eggs cooked how you like (suggest over easy for texture reasons), and topped with chili. Also, though this isn't officially on it, you should add cheese and onion on top. All this equates to having a belly full of goodness for about 9-10 dollars if you tip decently. Putting aside my love for the singer though this place isn't perfect. You need to have cash on hand as they don't take plastic here, and the ATM they provide charges an outrageous amount to get cash. The staff, while always friendly when I'm there, can sometimes be negligent in their service. And I have to say that the parking lot is a pain to get out of. Still all in all I have to say that this is my favorite diner in St. Louis. read more

I'm never very creative whenever I go to a diner. I always think that I need to order something off the breakfast menu. I guess maybe my thought process is that it should be something they are good at. Courtesy Diner's breakfast menu is pretty cheap. A egg and cheese sandwich ran me less than $2. I got two, with hash browns. My total bill with an orange juice was less than $10. That's how breakfast food ought to be!
